I would just like to point out that children, especially children Alyssa's age, grow. If she couldn't fit into it, that would just mean she had grown, but I get the very strong feeling that this mother would be telling her that she had gotten fat.
I don't think she means it that way. She means that she's grown. She probably bought her a long dress to pre-empt the fact that she will have to wear one for some of the age categories from now on and that will save money as they cost a few thousand dollars each.
I do pageants with my nephew who I raise as my son. I teach him that no matter what you win, all that matters is you having fun and learning. This woman is awful and her poor daughter deserves a hug.
Thank you for being a good human and so kind to your nephew. That is how pageantry should be, a fun, happy time for everyone involved, no matter whether you win ultimate or divisional titles or nothing at all.

I had a friend who did pageants when we were kids and she turned into a mean girl in high school, and now she treats her 2 daughters like dolls. Not the best model for life
