Chess clip appears in "Blade Runner" (June 25, 1982) about a dystopian Los Angeles in November 2019 in which genetically engineered replicants are hunted down and "retired" by police special operatives known as "Blade Runners."
The game showed in the movie is actually a real game,one of the most famous in history.This game was played by Anderssen vs Kieseritzky,London 1851.The game is called "The inmortal game".

"Immortal game" is a title given to quite a number of memorable games in the history of chess. There isn't just only one immortal game.
@@MisterHowzat It was the first immortal game. Anderssen sacrificed 2 rooks, queen, and bishop and still checkmated his opponent with the remaining bishop and knight pair. Quite brilliant, though immortal games typically require an inaccuracy from the opposing player.
Roy baited Sabastien in his bad chess moves in a effort to flush out the where abouts of Tyrell. Then gave the moves to Sabastien to check mate Tyrell. A really underated brilliant scene.
Roy is programmed to be a super genius canonically.

I agree, but see my comment above. A chess expert like Tyrell would never capture a piece if doing so led to an immediate mate on the following move. Someone at Tyrell's level can very quickly see any checkmate countermoves to his next move.
If Sebastians line is "Check. And mate in 3 I think" then it would work. Roy's sacrifice is a trap that doesn't lead to an immediate checkmate, but it does lead to an unavoidable checkmate. It leads to a check from which none of the responses are good, and from which mate is inevitable. That is a complex enough trap to trick Tyrell, if you bother him late in the evening, and if he thinks he is playing Sebastian and not Roy.. With this one small fix, I think its brilliant like you say. A very clever scene, in which the trap in the chess game is mirrored by the trap being laid for Tyrell.
It's also possible that they are deliberately following a historic game, and thus what I am calling a flaw is in fact a deliberate homage.
I don’t know that much about chess but I would imagine if you built the brain eventually it would outsmart you given time!

not true. many GM games history where 2 move mate was missed. and they are higher than genius, they spend their whole lives studying chess, which Tyrel obviously couldn't have done. plus it was the middle of the night. try a 2move mate puzzle rush, with 15 seconds per puzzle.
This movie is art. Real art. Completely amazing.
This scene shows you just how smart Roy can be,after only a few short stints at chess he’s able to corner and beat Tyrell (who’s a master chess player) with a single move.

If you start with a manufactured brain that is almost a genius and then give him three years practical application what else would you expect!

The chess game is the same one as in 2001 SO , between Hal9000 and Dave
So when he says "You'd better come up Sebastian" seems he's granting him access. (others have wondered how no security measures protected Tyrell from the rogue replicants) Perhaps Tyrell gave him a free pass or allowed him.

@@MWorsa it depends on what kind of man Tyrell is. Maybe he doesn't want to feel insecure, and thus, doesn't rely on them. The monitors could be in another room, or who knows?
If that is the case, then the next question would be, why did the elevator only read Sebastian as passenger? Perhaps, it only senses life forms, and not synthetic replicants? Perhaps, it's based on trust for the top designers? Sebastian being one of them, of course.
to be honest i never felt like Tyrell feared the replicants right up until roy killed him. Only in the last moments he has some kind of fear, until that only proud

In the start of the movie they say that one of the nexus 6 died trying to take the elevator to access his floor, so in this scene as he thinks Sebastian has a "genius" though he gives him full access to visit not nowing it is Roy coming aswell.
The game also reflects the scenario of the movie I think. Queen(Pris) to Bishop(Sebastian) six check. Knight(Deckard) takes Queen(Pris). Bishop(Sebastian) to King(Tyrell) seven check mate. Roy himself was the king on the other end. This movie is a genius masterpiece.
Tyrells chess set appears to be a Vasari made Battle of Waterloo chess set or similar gilded gold and silver lost wax casted set from Italy. However, I’ve not seen the bases of those pieces in any Vasari made set. I would love to know where all these tyrell props went.. like this chess set and the gold eagle and gold eagles from his conference room where Rachael is interrogated by Deckard the first time they meet.
I had one made with plastic pieces once...left it behind.

I believe Eldon is the true villain in this.
When we all thought Roy was the bad guy when really Aldon was the one who made the people into slaves including him and Roy was the best one and he disobeyed Aldon's work so that's why he sends a Blade Runner after Roy which is Harrison Ford who is also possibly a slave without even knowing it.
Humanity is being controlled Nexus 6. I think I got this all wrong. Please help me out here. I love the scfi feel to this dark movie.

As someone who CASUALLY plays chess....I find it difficult to believe there would be ONE move a player could make (in an ongoing multiple day game) that could put a king in check....that they BOTH somehow didn't see coming. Genius? Lmao. Okay.
yes its shit that with millions of dollars to spend on this movie, they couldn't be bothered to phone just any club level player on how one genius player outwitting another would go : all he had to say after his move was 'forced checkmate in 10 moves' or something similiar and that would have satisfied the chess community and have shown a bit more love and dedication for their movie.
@@plasmaastronautUnfortunately movies cannot be written entirely with us in mind. In fact we could never provide the capital required to finance these films. On the other hand, we become bored quite easily when a film is too "inside baseball". When it becomes "work".
Well remember that Tyrell's been facing off against Sebastian up til this point, and still thinks he is when Sebastian repeats Batty's orders. And though Sebastian is smart, he's not quite as smart as Tyrell or Batty. So Tyrell's playing with a degree of complacency, assumption, and lack of care in dealing with Sebastian's latest moves.
It's quite common for stuff like this to happen in highly praised movies. At least this time they played an actual historical chess game rather than have the pieces sit randomly on the board.
It's sad to think these actors will retake these shots numerous times to get it "perfect" and the whole crew will painstakingly make the props, make sure the ambiant light is right etc, then some small brain screenwriter will not even bother to buy a chess gamebook or go to a chess club to have a proper game going on.
Was Tyrell not expecting that move or something? Why didn't he notice the mate in 2?
Sebastian isn't as good at Chess as he is, many losses have led Tyrell to underestimate him.

It would have required a queen sacrifice, something that most players don't do, and Sebastian was probably no different. And since Tyrell had played and beat him most times in the past, he didn't expect such a bold and winning move from him. So no, Tyrell was not expecting that move.

The actual game this is modelled after, there is a whole series of moves prior to the queen sacrifice that would've made no sense if (Anderssen) didn't see the finishing touch, queen sac + mate with a bishop. Sebastian couldn't have possibly played those moves without seeing them.
Also, there is no level of 'underestimation' that would make a supposed chess 'genius' NOT SEE the mate which immediately follows a move he plays (he takes the queen and wonders aloud what Sebastian plan's is, seemingly unaware that there's a mate in 1 following. This is literally newbie level of chess knowledge; any chess BEGINNER would've seen every such mate). So, we can safely conclude that either Scott had absolutely no idea about chess, or he counted on his audience being completely clueless about it. No third option.
@@robb2991 You can tell that to chess master Kieseritzky. In 1851, London, he lost to chess master Anderssen with exactly the same couple of moves showed here.
Thanks for the upload! I love the film but this scene has always bugged me: Dr. Tyrell seems like a lousy player, not noticing a mate in two moves! ;)
He probably is a lousy player against club level chess. I play at club level, but then again, if this was a real character, he would hands down beat my knowledge of bio-genetics ;) Often times, people have specialisations in intellect. This may help their talent in other areas, but not as significantly as may be expected. In some cases, it can hinder it, because they become too focused on their specialisation. This is common with high IQ autism, which has extremely varied levels of severity.
It required a queen sacrifice, something that most players don't do, and Sebastian was no different (as evidenced by his saying no to that move when Batty made that move in Sebastian's apartment). Besides, they'd played many times before so Tyrell probably knew what kind of moves Sebastian was likely to make, and a queen sacrifice was not one of them.
