If your battery dies quickly or if the charge doesn't last very long in your iPhone, you can very easily replace it yourself. There are only 4 screws you need to remove. If you have any questions be sure to ask them in the comments.
    READ THIS:
I should have mentioned that it is more difficult to remove the battery than I show in the video. I had done it once before I started recording, so the glue holding the battery in has already been unstuck one time. That first time is a doozy. You gotta pull, and pry.... I used that long red plastic tool to get the battery unstuck as the pull tab would probably have broken.

This is the BEST video to use to replace your iPhone 5 battery. I watched another one that had you unscrewing three more screws on the inner part of the phone--TOTALLY unnecessary. Those little screws in the phone are so teeny, teeny tiny--the fewer screws you have to mess with, the better off you are! Thank you so much for taking time to post this video.

Worked perfectly, this is great. Thanks man. I bought a complete repair kit that came with the battery, screwdrivers, and prying tool for $20 on Amazon. Took me about 10 minutes - 5 spent annoyed with those microscopic screws - but my iPhone now works like new. Read the alarming comments about the battery smoking afterwards. I didn't have this problem but I will be very careful with how I dispose of it.

This helped me a lot to swap out the old battery on my i-Phone 5. I'm probably 2 or 3 times older than many of the posters here so the internal phillips head screws were challenging, and the advice about using a blow dryer (set on low) to slightly heat the back of the phone helped loosen up the battery glue very effectively. I greatly appreciate that you posted this really good tutorial here, Jerry, as well as all the people who commented and helped with the blow dryer trick. Phone is charging as I write.
    Peace,
    Rod

The only tricky part I came across was getting the screen off but with a little bit of moving the suction pull tool (which I got with the battery I purchased from Amazon) I was able to replace the battery just fine.
    Thanks again.

Thanks for this video. It looks much easier than it is. In fact, you should maybe add a comment that when you replace the battery for the first time, it is stuck (I read in the comment). BUT it is important to pry it from the left side and not where the electronics are.... I damaged my motherboard by prying from the right side and now the off- and home-button are not working anymore.... Just a little comment could have prevented that...

Thanks for the video. Just a note on my Iphone 5. The battery was nowhere near as lose as in the video. Mine had a VERY sticky glue in the back and had to use a flat screw driver as a lever. If this is your case, be patient and go very slowly. Also, very important, try not to lever against the side with all the electronics, but against the one facing the volume buttons. This way you won´t harm your device.

When I pried the battery out from the bottom corner it lit up and released smoke. Sounded like a lit up match. First time I see that kind of reaction. Battery is not damaged in any way, not pierced, bent, or anything. The iPhone was dropped in water and is dead.

Thanks Jerry, your video really helped me in quickly replacing my iPhone 5 battery. Specifically I like that the fact that your video cover only the bare minimum required steps. I saw couple of other videos too but they all were talking about completely detaching the screen, due to which the complete process was looking a little bit complicated.
But your video made it simple for me by only covering the battery replacement steps.

SUCCESS!!!! ordered the tools from your top link, but realized they didn't include a mini philips head. so had to find that in the neighborhood tool stores. keep in mind people, i love taking things apart and have been doing it since i was a kid, so if you are not detail oriented and used to working with tiny parts and precision tools, BEWARE! The top glass was very difficult to get loose, so you gotta keep prying the sides while pulling on the suction grasp tool till you get it to lift, then slowly pry around the phones bottom area to get it to lift slowly. The tiny screws were a bitch if they fly off. They are very easy to lose, so try to use magnetic tools and have a little bin to place your tiny screws in!!! the toolkit had a tweezer that was useful, but be careful cause if you have a bogus grip, the tiny screw will flip away into oblivion!!! The battery was stuck, but carefully and slowly pry with the plastic pry tools away from the electronics side. it will eventually loosen. Dig under it with the pry tools to lift it out. there is a small plastic tab you can lift for the battery, but that will not work 100%, so you need to pry slowly and carefully. BE PATIENT!!! putting the top back on was a bit tough too. make sure to get the top part completely seated first, then work your way down with light pressure until all sides of phone is securely seated. FYI......this will not take 2 min...take your time, be organized and be very patient! it took me about an half hour.......GOOD LUCK PEEPS! thank you JERRY!

Thanks for making the video. I found it particularly helpful to view what was underneath the battery. Warming the glue up really helps in the process of removing the battery but no one seems to mention to warm it from the back of the phone (or at least I didn't read anything as specific), at first I was trying to warm the battery up so the glue would then warm up, that didn't seem to be having much of an effect, but once I warmed the back of the phone the glue started to get loose very fast and I could remove the battery in a minute or two. Now I have a new battery working and there seems to be no damage done.

Jeffrey Newton You could use a blow dryer. Since I didn't have a blow dryer I borrowed a heat gun. If you've ever used your phone in a resource intensive manner you may have noticed the back starts to warm up, just warm it up to a similar temperature as this. Just try not to get carried away, make it warm not hot.

Your instructions and the video were great and worked perfectly for me. I was able to replace the battery in under 10 minutes without difficulty, and without any other instructions except your video. Removing the battery was not too difficult either: just had to patiently and slowly pry it up bit-by-bit with the tools, did not have to force it at all. Thanks so much for the great instructions.

    • @lmehta
      @lmehta 8 років тому

And don't keep prying the battery up in one spot try to lift, patiently keep moving the prying tool up and down the length of the battery using small amount of force at each spot. It will give only a little at each spot, but then the glue will start to peel off through out the length of the battery, and the whole will pry off easily at that point.

  • @lkm621

Just replaced my iPhone 5 battery using your video and the toolkit and pry tool you linked to. The link for the battery showed it out of stock so I ordered one from Amazon. The hardest part was getting the glass cover off. The suction cup in the toolkit didn't have enough pull. You do mention that the larger the better as far as suction cups go so we picked up a larger one at the hardware store. Couldn't get the pry tool in easily so we used the razor blade just enough to loosen it a little, then used the green pry tool after that point. The screws came out easily. (They are SO small, be careful!). We used the green pry tool again to pry the battery loose as it was stuck on with some adhesive. No big deal but worth knowing about. The connector on our replacement battery from Scanditech looked a little different from the original connector but it fit fine. Putting the teeny screws back in takes a steady hand and a good eye. We used a magnifying glass. Popping the cover back down is easy. Checked the battery immediately with the Battery Life app from the App store and it showed "very good" under the wear indicator. My five year old original battery had been showing "very poor". It just didn't have the capacity anymore. So all went well, only took about ten minutes start to finish. We're both in our sixties. You can do this! Thank you so much for the video. The one thing I would want others to realize is that the cover does not come off in real life as it does in this video. At least ours didn't. Use the razor blade first! Oh, and you need three hands. One to hold the cover at a ninety degree angle. This is not a one man job!

Thanks for the video! I just ordered a battery through your link, and I ordered their toolkit as well. Keeping all the fingers crossed I can do this! I live in AZ so the back of the phone heating up won't be a problem, I'll just go stand outside for a minute.
I've had my iPhone 5 since November 2012. The battery basically turned to shit about May 2014. But I never had it off the charger for long so I didn't notice it so much until I flew to San Francisco in July and the phone actually died while I was sitting at the airport. It only took 4 hours!! And I wasn't even using it constantly. I had to plug it into my laptop on the plane to recharge.
Then it died twice more walking around San Francisco. I'm glad I brought the car charger with me!!
Yesterday I went to the Verizon store and asked if they had replacement batteries...the girl actually said to me, "I don't think iPhones have batteries." Uhhh.... what?!?! Then she said, "I mean, it's on the inside." Again, WTF?!?!? I turned around and walked out. Could not believe what she said to me. An actual employee. Oy!
Anyway, I have to travel again in a couple weeks and I can't go through all that phone BS again.
Not that you care about any of this, but eh, I'm just babbling 'cause I'm glad this video is here! So again, THANKS!! :D

Hi! Thanks for useful instructions! Would like to add though that you should stay away from the middle section when prying the phone open since it is easy to damage the home button or the two delicate contacts on the opposite half. Use the outer section towards the corners. Also keep track of all screws. Very few are identical!

  • @ElPasoTubeAmps
    @ElPasoTubeAmps 9 років тому +114

You do not want to deform or puncture the battery. I have a suggestion - only do this with the old battery FULLY DISCHARGED. Here is why i say this. In my case there was no plastic tab to remove the battery as in some phones I have seen on UA-cam as it was stuck down, so I was gently trying to pry it out and the battery got mashed in some sensitive spot and the cursed thing almost set my work bench on fire. No joking. An enormous amount of smoke and fire poured out of my old battery in 5-6 seconds. It was unbelievable. I did manage to throw it out the door to the outside and burned the hell out of my finger. WARNING - if your battery does not come out easily you best stop and not try to pry it out. And don't mash these batteries. They are seriously dangerous if charged. Now I need a new $700 phone as the battery completely burned it up.

The same thing happened to me last week. I think Apple is super gluing them in the case!
As soon as my battery started to spark up, I threw it outside. After the fire (which burned off the glue), I tried the new battery, but it was pointless. The phone is completely dead!
That's the last Apple product for me!

    • @ElPasoTubeAmps
      @ElPasoTubeAmps 9 років тому

David Behsman Yes, mine sparked just a little bit but I was not smart enough to stop and kept trying. When the damn thing did go off it was big-time. I wish I had my camera recording what happened. In many environments it could have and would have started a house fire. It would have been hell if someone had this happen to them on their bed or a rug or furniture. It is absolutely unacceptable that they glue the battery in so hard. The YT videos don't show this anywhere. God help a poor person if this thing shorted while holding it to their ear. Sorry it happened to you also. There really should be a serious warning stamped on the batteries that are glued in to the phone. Personally, I never liked Apple computers but I have to admit, I do like their phones.

ElPaso TubeAmps thank you. mine has a tab and tried a few times. i was scratching my head as to why removing the battery was so difficult and then decided to read the comments from this tutorial to get clues as to how i can remove it. your comment had me putting the screws back in and closing the phone up without changing the battery. i will not do this now. a word of warning to, to anyone reading this. i purchased a so called 'brand new, genuine iPhone 5 battery replacement (with tools)' from ebay. the tools are a shonk and broke after a few attempts, the battery is aftermarket. the listing i purchased from is 151297056076, the seller is dodygroup. i am returning the item for a refund.

ElPaso TubeAmps They are Lithium-Ion Polymer batteries, there are very dangerous because the chemicals, can burn without air... (oxygen), in other words they are almost impossible to extinguishing in the traditional manner by removing air. I use massive versions of these for my hobby, muti-rotor drones. You must treat these batteries with great respect, never puncture or dispose of them in the regular trash. To dispose of them place them (discharged) in salt water for a couple of days, then dispose.

+khanvictize I tried using the plastic pry bar, and it was useless against the glued in battery. I then used a pair of needle nose pliers, and that's what caused the iPhone battery to ignite.

Just wanted to say thanks for your great video which gave me the courage to try it myself even though I'm 60 yo and eyesight not the best. I did it all with just the tools supplied with the battery for less than $10. No need to do without the phone for more than 20 minutes.
My Iphone 5 for some reason had three locating screws for the battery not two, and was "Glued" into the body which gave me a few anxious moments but your video was clear and positive. Thanks again.

God bless you for this video. My 3 year old dropped/threw my phone (5c) in the potty. My husband just bought it 3 months ago. I dried it out completely but it was acting a little odd. I just changed the battery while the 3 year old napped and its been working for several days now. I am not usually that handy but I followed your instructions exactly and IT WORKED. Yep yep yep. Worked like a charm! Thank you. The only things to watch for are:
    1) Battery that is super glued in (use a small flat head screwdriver to gently pry it away little by little working only on the outer edge, towards the volume control side of the phone, not the inside of the phone. You'll hear the battery start to slowly peel away; take your time)
    2) The kit I bought on ebay has cheap plastic pry tools which may snap. If you have a similar thin curved metal tool, use that instead. Maybe the razor blade just to start prying the case away and then move to the tool of choice
    3) Putting the battery connector plate back in is a bit of a pain with the magnetic phillips since it will magnetize to both the screws and the plate. Try to line the plate up over the holes exactly, get the screws, head first (that's what she said), to seat into the screwdriver and then screw in.

Just used this video to replace the battery on my phone! Thanks so much for the clear instructions. It was decently easy. The only tough parts were getting the screen off (just be patient and go slowly) and getting the battery out. The kit I ordered recommended using the blunt end of a pair of tweezers (forceps) as leverage on the "outside" long edge of the battery (the side of the battery that is next to the edge of the casing, not next to the other components) to pry the battery out. This worked great! Thanks for your help!

Just successfully changed my battery :). Thank you. Your video is so easy. I watched a few others and they said you had to remove the screen completely. Also, note to everyone, those screws are tiny! I kept dropping mine but luckily found them each time. Oh, and that screen is not easy to pull up. My little tool kit came with a really cheap suction cup that didn't do what it was designed to do. Luckily I had another one that worked. Still hard though.

Ok so this was a pretty big nightmare to be honest. I've taken apart iPhone 4's before and it was as easy as unscrewing the pentalobes on the bottom and sliding the back panel off to get to the battery, so I was kind of disappointed to learn that I had to go in from the front on the iPhone 5. For starters, I guess Apple did something special on my phone because the suction cup barely even budged the screen (yes I removed the screws from the bottom). It took an industrial suction cup from Home Depot and a fresh razor to wedge in there to pop the screen off. Once I got the screen off, it became a bit easier however. The only difficult part was getting the battery out. The adhesive used is insane, and I didnt have a heat gun or a hair dryer (Hey I'm a guy living alone, I have no need for one lol). I ended up turning my stove top on medium and holding the phone over it for a few seconds at a time so as not to damage it. That eventually helped and I got the battery replaced. It was worth it in the end though, as my phone would die in ~1 hour or less. Now after a full charge and 4 hours later, im sitting pretty at 95% battery. Feels like a new phone again.

Thanks for a great tutorial. You really made it a relatively simple exercise although it did take me a tad longer (er...about half an hour) than you took. 🤓 My battery was also stuck and I had to prise it out gently with the flat head screwdriver but it amazingly didn't catch fire! After reading others' comments I guess I got lucky as apparently if I had made a hole in the casing I could have inadvertently vaporised my phone.
So far I am delighted, just charged my phone and it is all looking good, staying charged and no longer discharging from 50% to zero in a microsecond. 😃 Many thanks Jerry!

i purchased a supposed genuine battery (which it really wasn't). when the battery and tool kit arrived, after much effort, i raised the glass. could not get the battery out. reading notes, i was discouraged by a few youtuber comments re battery sparking, catching fire, destroying phone etc.. so i closed the phone up and sent the battery back for a refund. i returned to this video and comments. ordered a new very genuine battery from ebay listing 301274660075, seller jzha2618. i have now successfully changed the battery with NO problems. here's how:
    1. used the suction cup together with prying tool as JerryRigEverything advised.
    2. unscrewed everything required as JerryRigEverything advised (important to only raise the glass 45 degrees so that the wires at the top of the phone don't break)
    3. used a hairdryer for about 40 seconds on medium heat, blowing from the rear of the phone (NOT ON the battery), to loosen the glue.
    4. used the flat head screwdriver supplied in the kit to pry the battery out gently ONLY FROM THE LEFT HAND SIDE, and then used the tab to raise and remove the battery.
    5. plugged the new battery in as advised by JerryRigEverything.
    6. rescrewed all necessary screws and brackets.
    7. placed phone on charge.
took me 10 minutes and the only reason why is because i did everything JerryRigEverything explained and followed some simple notes from other users experiences. for someone like me who knows absolutely nothing about this stuff, JerryRigEverything turned me into a iphone battery changing guru.. thanks buddy :)

It worked! Thanks! I learned a couple of things from doing it that might help someone else.
I don't have the finger strength you probably do and I found myself grasping the phone on top of the screen just to keep a grip on it. I ended up putting a fat writing pen thru the suction cup ring so the pen tip was on the table (which I had actually put a lint free linen cloth on so I wouldn't lose the screws), ran it thru my fore and middle finger so the top of my hand was doing the lifting and forcing my fingertips to only the sides of the phone.
Also, I had to look very carefully at your video to see exactly where I wanted to pry thru, there is a little liner around the screen and I didn't know which side of it I was aiming at - the outside. It should be the metal case bottom only that you are prying off.) Run your little pry tool all along the end to get things going, but I found the screen next to the headphone jack is where the screen assembly is the thinnest.
The battery has a bit of sticky glue and will need a steady, strong pull on that clear tab to lift it - and that's the only good way to lift it. Leave the clear tab and the sticky in there to hold the new battery.
Last, I read somewhere to let the new battery charge for 12 hours before using it, but I found you don't want to do your first charge via your computer - the phone keeps trying to connect. Charge it via your wall charger.
I got it put together and charged overnight alright, but the new battery is losing power too fast. I have another new one from Apple, I may have to do it all again tonight.

WORKED PERFECTLY for a non tech person. I used a dull razor which did not mar the surface at all. To re-install the screen slide the top in first because I had to take it apart and do this so the screen reseated properly. Thank you for your video!!!

Thanks jerry. Your video instructions were excellent. My battery wasn't very keen on coming out and was stuck with some substance. But otherwise all went well.

Thank you for the tutorial. I just changed mine, I had a bit of trouble, though, as the battery was stuck to the phone and would not come away, but finally managed.

Best video out there !!! the guy is obviously a pro which is why it looks soo easeful !! its my first time changing a battery on a phone and minus having to forcefully pry my batt out ( most likely to it being super old n some water damage) it went great !!! Thanx for the video JerryRIG

The Man has made this video very clear and precise. Couldn't be faulted in my opinion. So why 261 people have bothered to dislike the post is beyond me. Surely 14,000 people can't be wrong. Thank you "JerryRigEverything" you have definitely helped me. Cheers.

Thanks much, your video did the trick. I wish I had steady hands as yours. I needed a 3rd hand to hold the glass screen at 90° while I worked on the guts. Others have suggested blow dryer on bottom of case to soften battery adhesive.....I did not, just pry slowly and wait for adhesive to yield. Thanks again for sharing.

Success! Thanks for your help. Took me much longer than 2 minutes, but got it done! Getting the thing open and the battery pried loose were the hardest parts - oh and the teeny tiny screws that I could barely even see.... But alls well that ends well. Phone is working fine!

Thank you so much!! Spent $6 on Ebay for a battery (that included a pry tool and screwdrivers) and watched your video. Now I have revived an old Iphone 5 we had laying around dead that we thought was useless. WIsh I would have known I could do this before we replaced it a couple years back but now at least we have a backup :)

Nice video, thanks. I'd only add that the suction cup often doesn't work (didn't for me) AND my battery was glued in, so I had to consult a couple of other videos (glue problem + an alternative to suction cup) to get the job done.
