I wish I lived in a world where I could wince at paying such an extremely high price of $800 for a 1959 Jazzmaster.
Yeah...now add a zero, that's what they cost now.
Ryan Price A 59 Jazzmaster is worth SO MUCH MORE than that. That price is a STEAL. For one made in mexico it cost that much. That thing is prolly worth AT LEAST 8000 right now. Actually, check this out reverb.com/item/1669-fender-jazzmaster-1959-two-tone-sunburst-price-reduced#policies-tab
+Steven Rivera i think what he's saying is that they weren't always worth much money, and it would be nice to go back to when they were cheap and un-desireable.
I used to see these in the early nineties going for $400.00-$500.00.Now they're diserable. back then they were considered shit and only grunge and indie guys wanted them because of dinosaur jr and sonic youth. I'd rather have a pre cbs tele with a rosewood board but thats just me. The whammy on these is pretty bad. God bless leo fender.
I was talking to a guy who used to see early 60s brown/blonde fender amps in music stores in the 80s for 150 to 200 bucks apiece-Everybody wanted Marshalls or blackface Fenders with reverb. Now a brown deluxe costs $3500.
That bit he plays at 3:40...man...
I have never met this dude, but he SEEMS like maybe, the coolest dude on the planet. He plays pretty well too ;)
He is, he absolutely is.
no , hes not that cool...thurston rocks way harder and is way cooler
diamondog99
Always gotta be one idiot that has to argue just to argue.... Congratulations on being that one idiot...
PhunkyPhishPhan your welcome..
but with coments like coolest dude on the planet !! get real
diamondog99
My point was that he was obviously just saying "this guy is really cool", not "this guy is literally the coolest person on the planet, out of every single person, he is absolutely 100% the coolest". Just tired of constantly seeing people arguing and correcting each other over nothing, tbh, yours wasn't really that bad I suppose. It was just obviously not meant to be taken literally.
I used to not get jazzmasters, but I played a 63 today and hands down best sounding guitar Ive every played, I'm a fan
Holy crap, what a rig! And Nels is my new hero. This guy knows what he's doing!
Cool cool cool.
I didn't try a Jazzmanster until I saw Nels play it. Now one of my favourites!!
drooling over all that gear... he really knows how to use it tastefully. Also, it's great just listening to him play with no effects as well.
Can we get a Nels Cline signature Jazzmaster already?
+Rosenaught8694 Why? It's literally a stock '59 Jazzmaster except for the Mastery bridge. Put that bridge on an American Vintage reissue and you'll have your Nels Cline signature without the $500 mark-up.
+Rosenaught8694 actually mastery bridges aren't mass-producible, so even if artists put those in their guitars, their sig models wont have it. sadly
Saw the Nels Cline 4 live a couple of weeks ago.....simply gurrrreat!!!!!
I also love the jazzmaster sound and the music of nels cline,a really amazing guitar player, one of the best contemporary ones for me.Everything from his chords voicings, his great solos and his sonic disasters landscapes, great!
a couple years before i saw nels do this, back in 2004 or so, I used the Electro Harmonix digital delay and kaoss pad combo exactly like this and I must say, it is one of the most musical guitar effect combinations i've ever used. been looking for an affordable EHX delay ever since!
Try the manecolabs sixteen second digital delay! They have a compact and a bigger version
We covered the story about the guitar in our 15th issue, with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy on the cover. Mike Watt bought this guitar at Guitar Maniacs in Tacoma, WA. He then sold it to Nels Cline.
Nels never ceases to amaze me. I am so happy to see him doing so well and working so much these days. No other guitarist has meant as much to me as he has, starting with my introduction to him via Mike Watt and Geraldine Fibbers- which eventually turned me away from the bass to take the guitar seriously, full-force.
Thanks for every bit of it, Mr. Cline.
Nels Cline is my hero.
It just came to my attention (thanks to Neko Case) that Pops Staples of the Staples Singers played a Jazzmaster. Here's Neko's quote: "Oh, yeah! [Pops Staples is] the reason I own a Jazzmaster too. It's exactly like you were saying. The guitar should not go into the singing or above the singing, and the Jazzmaster has the best low end of any guitar and that beautiful caramel sound." Tom Verlaine, & Sonic Youth, were the ones who made me love the sound of Jazzmasters.
does anyone know if what he plays at 3:40 is a song or just improv?
he is such an amazing guy.i hope to meet him one day.
i wish Nels was my dad
really inspirational
Never gets old
great sound.. love it!
It took Television and Sonic Youth to get him to go out and buy one? Not The Astronauts of The Ventures or Robert Smith of The Cure? I love Jazzmasters. I miss mine because it's getting worked on.
Cool landscape
Beautiful sounds....i hear that Cline has had the headstock rebuilt after mega damage from punk shows...it sounds great for an instrument that looks like it has been through a war.
that was awesome
Damn, that tone...
my 1960 Jazzmaster cost me $400.00 with a hard case. I couldent afford a strat at this time because my weekly salary was only $100.00 take home.I look at all the electronic junk the builders of the stuff makes a fortune on, and think if Lester Paul had that can you imagine the sound he could get. It took me quite a while to figure out he recorded at a lower speed than the record players did to get that speed he had. the Paulverizer was a big joke to all of us. most of us pro guitar players were happy with a dual reverb at the time. there wasn't any thing else that sounded so good.
Hard to believe he's almost 60.
He is now. :D
what's the black box to the left of the kaos pad?
EHX 16 Second Digital Delay. Discontinued and the Reissue doesn't do the same things, but Manecolabs makes a clone!
Tweedy at :58...sly dog.
GUITAR HERO
I'm confused.. he says it's a 1959 Jazzmaster. 1:50.
Fender would never go for the Mystery bridge, and besides that it's pretty much stock I think.
oh sweet giblets
Michael C. Hall steps in to take a photo 1:10
Elvis Costello and J. Mascis too.
$800 for a '59 JM......shit.......
Earl Scheib will paint any guitar for $29.95!!
BLOC
im so sick of strats and Pauls. I always try to copy heroes when i play there. I just got a lightweight Stang Squire and im in love with guitar again
Be quiet Nels so I can hear you play!
Nice pfp
that pedalboard is stupid good lord...I have 6 pedals on a board and one line selector...god guitarists have gotten lazy....tremolo pedal? no I'll use my volume knob and for vibe I add vibrato to full chords...swell with my volume knob....so much you can do with technique and creativity. .. vox wah, tc electronics dark matter, ehx lpb1 boost, mooer optical compressor, ehx memory toy, boss dd-7 and ehx switchblade+ line selector...I cannot imagine even having one more pedal...
who gives a shit
he does some of the best jazz I've ever heard with no pedals...also some of the coolest shit w effects and wilco, if u don't like it don't use a ton of pedals, he likes it so he does, whatever
:'( :'( :'( why don't people play music under my narrow definition of it :'( :'( :'(
Great guitars, hateful bridge design.
