I got the self titled album in the fall of 96, my freshman year of high school. Another guy in my class was also really into that album, and we became friends and started hanging out. Eventually we both had their entire discography, plus a half dozen bootlegs. We would drive around in his S-10 listening to sublime compilation tapes and smoking tons of weed lol. We are still friends to this day, I'm about to be 39 and he's 40. We still hang out, smoke weed, and listen to music. Thanks Sublime!

I got chills when they played the vocals. Bradley truly was amazing. Watching bud listen, you can just feel him missing his friend. Missing someone we lost never gets easier. Dont care what anyone says. We just find our ways to cope the best we can.
Finally someone mentions Brad's guitar playing, he was fantastic...and tasty in his solo's.
He was underrated for SURE! Kind of like Wes with LB.

Damn shame Bradley wasn't able to partake in all the glory he produced. One of the most iconic bands of all-time, along with Nirvana and Rage, changed the course of music.
I also feel this way about blind melon. Their singer was also charismatic yet tortured and wrote alot of some chilled tunes.
Well,kinda. I love sublime. And he was a GREAT front man. But, Chris Cornell was better, my only argument is between Cornell and Lane. I don't know. I really don't. Bradley is in his own group of stars. R.I.P.
@@mikeconti3537 Going to have to disagree with you on that. Chris Cornell, like most of the other artists that rode the Nirvana wave was overrated. He had the vocal style of cats having sex. Brad Nowel was a much better singer.

Yea wtf, the bass carries its own melody in this song. Baffling how such a major piece to the song could be disregarded. Sublime had one of the baddest rhythm sections ever.
The hardest bass line for me to learn. Was actually this one. Eric is a hell of a bassist man. And as a bassist. I truly think that he’s easily the most under looked and the most under appreciated. Dudes a beast

There hasn’t been another band like sublime. Sure there are good reggae rock bands since then, but they just don’t make them like sublime anymore. One of a kind

I’m 37 now and I can remember listening to this tape ( then eventually a CD 😂🤙🏻) every single day for YEARS. Legendary album, it changed my life and put me on the path to guitar. Which I still play. Thanks for the good times.

I'm 37 too. I remember just blasting the CD in the summer of 2003 on my way to work at a golf course in Michigan. There music was always a positive for me. Through so much with sublime as the soundtrack. I play guitar too and Sublime was a big reason why I started.

Sublime is one of my favorite bands of all time and the self-titled album is one of those 5 albums I would take to a desert island

The best thing about that era of music was how all the bands sounded different from one another. They all had unique styles that you could distinctly hear.
As someone who grew up in that era we had a ton of mediocre clones of whatever was popular at the time. That’s kind of the problem looking back, all the great bands stand out making it seem more diverse than it was. Still think that was one of the great eras of music if you can ignore it also saw the rise of boy bands.
Still plenty of unique artists out there. Go listen to Rival Sons, Sturgill Simpson, Jack White, or so many others. Every era has amazing music, it's about whether you have the time or desire to find it.

All the bands had to be good. Had to be unique. Nowadays anybody can record something and put it out. There's 5455392937570 bands/artists now. And honestly a lot of them sound the same. So it's just noise.
Not so sure I agree. Sublime (the album) was from 1996 and there were a gazillion and one artists that sounded the same.
I grew up in the '80s and was *very* into music as a little kid, and now I'm 45 and having tons & tons of musicians that sound alike is nothing new. It's always been that way.
There's also nothing wrong with it if people enjoy it.
Capturing lighting and Genius in a bottle like that only happens every once in 50-100 years in recorded music history.
Bradley Nowell had a proven IQ of 142 on paper even by age 11. He was placed in a program called M.G.M mentally gifted minors by his parents in Orange County CA. He was the true unspoken genius of the 1990s. Sublime is without a doubt my favorite band of all time.... They have brought this world so much happiness with their music and into my life. Hearing Brad, Eric, and Bud’s solo tracks was haunting, amazing, and bitter sweet all at the same time. Thank you Rolling Stone for covering this... watching this brought me great joy, chills down my spine, and watery eyes. The most influential band in my entire life, mixing Reggae, Punk Rock, Ska, Blues, Hip Hop, Folk, Dub, Freestyle, Electronic flawlessly crossing genre to genre showcases how truly special this band was. Santeria will be heard by people 100 years from now and onward...
Bradley is truly missed.... but the music will always speak for itself. Amazing 🙏

It would only figure that Bradly passed away in my home town, just right down the road from the street I grew up and lived on for 20+ years. Every time I pass the hotel he was at, I think of him.
…Too bad he cured AIDS after Freddie Mercury died….. We still got a lot of mosquitos flying around my house, so I doubt the space insect thing.
There are some lucky instances in time, when a perfect band is formed every now and then.
Sublime had it all. From Bud's soulfull precussion, to the absolute tight, groove machine that Eric was, and ending in Bradley's incredible voice and guitar feeling. What a match!

I don't know about chills, but I did feel emotional. I'll explain.
I've been playing that solo for many years now. People always transcribe it without the double note, but I hear it there, and so I've always played it as a double note. Nevertheless, it has always confused me because no matter how quickly I try to alternate pick it, it never sounds quite right. I'd wondered if there was some other technique going on there that I hadn't thought of, lol.
Of course, Brad's dead, and it's such an obscure question to ask anyway,-it never even _occurred_ to me I'd ever get an answer to that question. So when he started telling that little story...man, my jaw dropped a little. What are the chances?!? after all these years. It feels like a cross between nostalgia and resolution.
Same here. I knew exactly what notes he was talking about before they even played the tape. Albums that were recorded analog are always full of happy little accidents like that one.
I'd love to see a track breakdown of the master tapes from this album! This video was superb but desperately wanted it to be longer!

Died to soon . Rip Brad … I remember when he died in 96’ , Sublime was still unknown to the world , but in SoCal especially in LA county were I’m from , you heard of them through word of mouth . So when he died the band was just taking off main steam . Forever young .
I knew who they were in bumfuck Pennsylvania in 92. I have been playing them.since 40 ounces to freedom. I was so sad when Brad died.
This album is an essential part of my life. Love it from first listen and it has never gone stale. Love this album, love this band. RIP Bradley, your music will live on.

In college I played this song along with what I got at hundreds of late night drunken smokefest Jam sessions. No matter what the time or place or people, Sublime songs always made people happy and good energy

I really love the tone that Brad developed in the later years of sublime. With the Dan McDonald guitar and having bud on the drums.
As well respected as Brad is these days, I still think he’s a bit underrated. The guy stands out in an era of music where brilliant songwriters were hiding behind every corner. Easily right up there with Cobain and Jerry Cantrell. I think because his songs were relatively simple and had a party vibe to them they get overlooked. But everything the dude touched turned to gold. And man, could that guy sing and play guitar or what?

@@michaeljwolley What do you mean? The majority of Sublime’s catalog consists of original tunes. Sure, they played a slew of covers and Brad would mix and match bits of music/lyrics that came from other sources, but they definitely, 100% played more original tunes than covers. And several of their covers are pretty reimagined, like Doin’ Time, for instance.
He's very underrated, his talent of mixing genres was like nobody at that time. Bradley was an amazing gifted musician all around, his passing was truly unfortunate. Just as they were getting shit together on stage. RIP Bradley

As well as these guys could play, the FEEL is what did it for 'em. As Bob Marley said, "he who feels it, knows it"......these f'in dudes certainly knew it. Such a brilliant entire record.
Sublime will always be one of my all time favorite bands. I wish I could’ve seen them live before Brad passed, he was one in a million. Such a soulful singer/guitar player, who matched perfectly with Bud and Eric (and Miguel and Marshall too). I really hope they will finally release the documentary they made a couple years ago.

And all these years later, I still have to play this album in my car, with the windows down on the first warm day of Spring. I’m older now, my hair is thinner, I have some gray on my beard, but Brads voice is still right there, in that moment at that eternal age. It’ll never get old.

"New Song" is probably my favorite Sublime track. There's so many amazing tunes in their catalog. There's very little filler on their records, even Robbin' the Hood is great background music.
Brad I believe did have perfect pitch. I’ve never heard him sing a bum note and I’ve heard every single song he ever sang! Such an injustice to lose him at that point. We love ya guys and thanks for the memories! ❤️

Love to hear the stories behind the songs. I think it wudv been hella epic & fun AF being part of ANY recordings from Sublime. I'm a music junkie & have been a loyal fan of Sublime since day 1. It speaks volumes that they continued for the love of music & celebrating Brad's life. Gotta say Bud that the "steal your face" just reiterates that certain band's that run the gauntlet of my entire life have an energy all their own & I cud hardly walk away from them as I cud any loved ones in my life. This is seriously so incredible. Bradley, Bud and Eric made magic recording this album. I know you probably can't go back, but I'd watch an hour long special on the album as a whole. It's a modern classic. I first heard "What I Got" when I was 10 I'm 35 now. As in love with Sublime as ever. Bud Gaugh is such an underrated drummer too!
Such raw, soul-driven music that just doesn't exist today. Let's get back to this kind of music can we??
