It's like a lot to think about. He got famous as a teenager. He was in the eye of the world and large audiences for like 14 years (he just turned 30) and it's understandable that it all built up over the years to a boiling point where it became hard for him to try to power through it.

It may be because I am European that I vibe so differently. The joker, comedian, the jester, ... was first and foremost a speaker of truth (often at expense of those in power) hidden in a veil of giggles. But they were also tragic figures of truth. Often painting tears on their chins to this day. The classical Greek "comedy" is overlapping wildly with what we would call "tragedy because of unintended consequences." Heck - Shakespear's Hamlet demonstrates that (yes it is clearly comic to hold a monologue with Yorick - but it is also insanity in motion).
I see this as he is inside and alone (alongside all of us) because of the pandemic - stopping mid-song to tell us that his isolation started 5 years earlier. He is home alone - pushing the button of canned laughter (inappropriately - but on purpose), the funny thing that happened in January 2020 is not really LOL-material.
In the end - he is breaking the 4th wall (as he did 5 years before with the audience in his last infamous live-act). He is taking us, the audience, on stage. Giving us the visuals of a panic attack. He is kicking us out. Until he finally just "drops us".
All this is classical concepts of the "comedian" in Europe (search for the Pagliacci-paradox story). A clown doing hard-core existentialism. In fact, if you watch James Arcasters 4-episode Netflix series you can watch a British genius of a stand-up comedian literally start the first episode sitting on his knees - before he in episode 2 literally deconstruct his stage by first moving his stage props around before turning them upside down before taking them apart. Some pretty heavy deconstruction going on, in other words. Complete chaotic of fun until one starts to understand - oh this is actually about the failure of a relationship.
It has more modern examples - the funniest and most horrific movie ever made maybe Dr Strangelove. Forcing us into the weirdest version of hysterical laughter while watching very real ideas being presented in light shining on the absurdity and insanity being no laughing matters.
I know - I just took all the fun out of comedy. But I will say that I love classical looney-toons. I just wanted to express that funny stuff exists outside of the loony-verse. Bo, to me, seems to happily be a crossover. Sort of being the Roadrunner with deep existential thoughts AND introspectively asking himself why he even bothers with Coyote in a loop of repetitive episodes.
The reason we so rarely are exposed to this old tradition is because it need genius-level brains to pull that off in these days of 15 second tictok "memes".
Clowns have been crying for thousands of years. And that is what defines being "edgy" for real. To be "controversial" is just a cheap trick for attention like shouting out the word "willie" just because internet will explode into controversy about the term "willie" being said publically.
Am I right? Oh I am right. I as Norwegian I walked off a long distance bus 9/11. Somebody said "do you know America is under attack?". I run straight up to my University office since I work with you both here and overseas. I sat camp in my office. I did not get home to my flat until 40 hours later.
You know what speech I remember? A comedian hosting a little show called "the late show" back in the day called David Letterman while still in that chaotic aftermath a few days later. Oh yeah - those silly comedians are not always there to make cheap jokes. Which is also why Eddie Murphy's "Raw" has changed meaning for me over the years. I started out thinking it was about him saying ALL the no-words very fast as a kid - with that understanding of what "edgy" means. With age it is not longer the use of F-bombs that makes it great via "he said the word".
Also demonstrating that it is my concept of "edgy" that is changing over time, not so much my childish humour.

I think we also have to realize that he started making this content before the pandemic. He literally talks about this in the preview of this song. But also like he is a comedian so he knows what he's doing. He's making it happy on purpose. He probably wants people to vibe to it while they're reflecting on it because they've come to expect this kinda heavy,-yet-delivered-in-a-light-package-song.
He wants people to vibe to it. He doesn't want to create a song with depressing lyrics and a depressing sound. I think he wants the song to sound good: catchy & sorta upbeat so it will make people think because they're enjoying it. If the song sounds too sad people may skip it or just be too in their feelings to realize that it may be about more than just one thing. This song can be about Bo's thoughts on himself, his view of the world both before/after the pandemic and the world at large. If the song wasn't upbeat it wouldn't have been made by Bo. But I do obviously agree it's an uncomfortable experience to vibe to this. I felt the same way about Make Happy.

This song has heavy religious worship service vibes. The "get your hands up, get out of your seats, eyes on Him" (referring to their god), the mood lighting, the synth keyboard, the mini talk while the music continued and the whole choreography of almost possession and surrender. To me it sounded like giving up fighting and surrendering to your depression like it is a god. Hearing that voice telling you the world is over, there's nothing you can do, get back inside, which I think could refer to get inside your comfort depression hole and dissociate from the world where all the pain is and make yourself numb.

I took the “we’re going to go where everybody knows, everybody knows” a bit differently. It could just be my way of looking at things and my nihilistic tendencies when I get depressed but I saw this song as a we’re all gonna die anyways so who cares. Like everyone claims to know where we go after death or has an opinion on it. And the world is so screwed at this point with climate change and everything so we are just waiting for it to end. Everyone knows that the world is over so why fight it when you can/have to (with the pandemic) stay with friends and family til it’s over. “So you say the oceans rising? Like I give a shit. You say the whole world ending? Honey it already did. You not gonna slow it. Heaven knows you tried. Got it? Good now get inside. we’re going to go where everybody knows.”

Anyways, I feel the lyrics are (also) referring to anxiety (going where everybody knows eachother (like a social gathering where you don't really know anyone is anxiety inducing) all eyes on me, are you feeling nervous, don't be scared don't be shy) escalating into panic attacks (it's almost over, it's just begun).

Anxiety attacks as part of an anxiety disorder don't go away. It doesn't have anything to do with confidence, skill, or anything like that. I hav generalised anxiety disorder, which means that my anxiety isn't bound to any specific triggers like, say, social anxiety. Instead I have this constant nagging anxious feeling, sort of like if you've left the stove on at home, but can't quite remember it, but you know something's not right. Then if I get too stressed, or too depressed, or just overwhelmed, I get anxiety attacks, which basically make me feel physically ill. They make my head spin, make my heart beat faster and harder, and a whole bunch of feelings I don't even know how to describe to someone who hasn't experienced it. Living in a motel room all by myself, during the governer mandated lockdown (which occured on my b-day btw) in the middle of a pandemic, yeah, it hit me pretty hard.
We're gonna go where everybody knows everybody meant to me that we're trapped not only inside our homes (or motel rooms), but also in our own minds and experience all of our own various psychological manifestations.
I've read a ton of comments on different reactors sites that covered this song, and a lot of people also interpreted it this way.
While I'm not certain of the meaning meant by Bo, he certainly is a genius and I found Inside to be horrible, beautiful, and it honestly broke me.

This song pairs very well with "Goodbye" following it. The Songs are honestly best as a duo. Also, the lines "Heads down, pray for me" paired with the Hands up line creates kind of a double meaning. First is the God-complex, where he feels like the viewers/fans were, or should be, admiring/worshipping him in the "Heads down, hands up" position. Second is taking it as praying for him to get better/stay well through the process of the special and the Pandemic.

"Get your fucking hands up." "Get out of your seat." "All eyes on me." These are phrases used by arresting officers. Just like all of his "final" songs, it's sang in an upbeat way, but it's about being arrested by anxiety and depression, where the pandemic has basically captured him after being "finally released from prison." When he picks up his phone and starts swinging it around, after really emphasizing the arresting "get the fuck up!" he's simulating a panic attack.

The take I had about this song was that when he was saying “get your hands up” he was referencing to his previous acts where he would say he loves the audience and how much they love him. It makes him feel valuable and wanted. Then when he starts talking about the “look in my eyes. Don’t be scared” part, it was his anxiety coming back up. Those are common phrases people tell themselves to calm themselves down. “I’m fine” “it’s okay” “ nothing’s wrong” “ it’s almost over”. He doesn’t want to stop because he wants that adoration and love from the people so he continues on with the song/show going back to the “hands up”. Then he slips in the “pray for me” part. If you pay attention to the special, and the length of his hair, you can see that his fun and upbeat songs are all filmed earlier. His deeper and darker songs come later. You can see as you watch the special that his mental health is slowly deteriorating to the point where he cries. Not only that, but he ends up not filling his show with comedy. The breaks between songs are clips of small daily things he filmed later on after he starts mentally giving up so he can fill the minimum time required for his show. When he starts singing about the “the world ending and it already did” his world already ended. He disappeared and lives in a guesthouse on his parents property. He quit his job, his mental health is declining, and he can’t continue to do the one thing he knows and loves. I also feel that when he starts talking about “we are going to go where everybody knows” he is referring to his final preference where he said that he wants to say what he wants. The thing that stops him from doing that is his fear of the people not liking what he has to say so he sticks to comedy we are used to or that we are familiar with. This way we will keep watching him. I thought this song was him taking us on his mental journey through doing a performance. “Your not going to slow it heaven knows you tried. Got it good now get inside” i felt wasn’t in reference to the world ending but his saying that he can’t slow down the panic attack. He’s tried everything he can think of so what do you do? You run away. Go inside. Hide. The idea that no matter what he does his anxiety will take over so it’s just better to stay inside away from people despite his deep craving for the spotlight.

regarding darkness, I think he says:
    "We're going to go
    where everybody knows
    everybody knows"
So, "we are going where everybody knows everybody goes"
    that's my interpretation.
Never bothered to check, I like it

I love your interpretation of the "everybody knows everybody" line. I kinda saw it as a way of saying "being alone" because everybody knows everybody if you're the only person there.

In my opinion I feel like adding the laugh tracks is a way of him showing that he wants to hear that sound again as well as perhaps he was in isolation when first practice this song an he imagined saying it at show. Bo also maybe meant to convey that the crowd although they have good intent, don't really understand what he actually behind the Jokes but he is used to it.

I have watched many multiple reaction videos on this, and while I think Bo Burnham is an amazing artist and creator with a brilliant mind to be able to encapsulate so well and convey the message, at the end of the day, he is an artist, an entertainer, a creator, actor, visionary, he loves creating tantalizing Dram using theatrics. and I find it interesting how people read in to some of his work although I fully believe myself that it's pretty incredible how he can convey a story and be very honest, musical and comedic all at same time.
Even Bo said once in an interview that most people are reading things wrong and its not always this deep seeded depression although he very candidly talked about many of the panic attcks he has had on stage and how truly terrifying that experience is. but at the end of they day, he is still an entertainer who just happens to be a master at his craft, he so good in fact, that people actually believe he is suffering from mental illness. when he's really not,
It's true he took off from his comedy bit for 5 years, but it's not like he was sitting around all depressed, he was working on other projects such as the Movie that he directed and produced called "Eighth Grade" and also spent 3 years creating what we now know to be his next Netflix Special "Inside"

You guys are dense …… this song is about his struggle with this mental his health … he lives to be on stage , he can make a group of people happy , but he cannot make himself happy .which is most important . He’s unfulfilled personally . He doesn’t want to get outta bed b/c he has too be real … he’s not happy with himself … he living up to something he produce .. once you deal with mental health issues this tune will bring you to a tear .

Id re-aim your cams center to where the redline on the youtube video is and bring it closer for a tighter hold on you 2, lighting is not bad but not good, if and when get a backlight for you two seperates from the background, and closer xam will allow you to pull the focus to you.
Edit: also make center of cam level with your faces or a bit lower looks better, shots that show down make the subject look small
