In an earlier special in one of his songs, Bo says (about the audience) "You can tell them anything if you just make it funny, make it rhyme". I feel like that's the sentiment coming across in him adding the laugh track here. He's said some very real stuff on stage in the past but as long as he says it in a song or a funny voice, the audience laughs and keeps rolling.
Yeah, this made me think of that as well. It ties in very well.
That makes sense. That was the feeling he was able to share in one of his last shows before taking a break. He stewed on that feeling for five years.
And got over it.
And then...
The funniest thing happened.
Yeah I was directly thinking of that - because in that very song (referring to the song "Kanye Rant"), literally after he has that emotional interlude about his anxiety and declining mental health, he says "I put on a silly show / I should just shut up and do my job / so here I go" and goes back into the "bit". And the audience, who had been dead silent during the tense emotional bit, starts whooping and cheering when he puts away his tragedy and emotions and starts doing "the bit" again. And I feel like "All Eyes On Me" is basically a direct follow up to "Kanye Rant".
And one commentator I saw said that perhaps people were whooping and cheering because when you're in an audience, you don't have a lot of options to express sympathy or sadness or really anything, except through applause. I was at a show once (not Bo, just a random comedy show) where they had to stop the show bc someone needed medical attention and had to be helped out by paramedics. And the audience clapped? Ostensibly for the paramedics, but it felt super out of tone.
So even if the audience can't do anything *but* clap, no matter the situation, I think the laugh track in All Eyes On Me is definitely meant to point out how no matter the feeling behind it, there are just some times where it's super jarring to be a performer and hear people laughing/clapping to things you've just said.
@@laurenh7558 >And I feel like "All Eyes On Me" is basically a direct follow up to "Kanye Rant".
That's actually exactly what it is. It is detailing, in an incredibly direct and forthright way, his experience having his first panic attacks on stage. Which was while he was performing Can't Handle This - that's why he just had those inchoate yelps at the end of the track, why there were very sudden cuts (it was filmed on three nights in NYC so footage got spliced together - supposedly some had to be re-recorded in an empty theatre), and why when he said 'goodnight, new york, I hope you're happy' he looked like a rabbit in the headlights, dropped the mic and ran off stage. In that special it looked like he came straight back out but apparently he had a breakdown backstage and had to compose himself
If you've ever had a panic attack you will suddenly see the lyrics in a new light. The ocean rising/whole world ending stanza is meant to indicate the extreme tunnel vision (literally and metaphorically) you get during one, it's impossible to think outside of a sudden ego death while it's happening and that's essentially what a panic attack is: very sudden and total ego death without the benefit of any insights that psychedelics which can cause that, might give you
5:00 I love the laugh tracks' placement, because it feels a lot like where a crowd really would laugh, highlighting how awful that is
sometimes people laugh out of not sure what’s going on, the irony that he finally wanted to perform and then the pandemic came…,how many people had plans and their life ruined, so much stress, people dying…i work for a hospital, we never got away from it…..so many medical staff burned out, it was effing exhausting….patients attacking staff, and then some of those patients dying, they said to the end they weren’t going to die, it’s made up, 🤦♀️.
so i think the laugh track is dark comedy, the flip side of crying….we’re tired of being sad and tired.we’re all worn out
"Is he okay?" is honestly the PERFECT question to ask. I truly believe that is exactly the point. To ask. To check. To see this in our lives and in the lives of those we care about.
When he says "GET THE F**K UP!" aggressively, it's to mimic the feeling of a panic attack so you can empathise
"Is he ok?" No. The whole point, the only point of the special and this song is to say "NO. IM NOT OK. AND I'VE BEEN TELLING YOU FOR YEARS ALL ANYONES EVER DONE IS LAUGH"
My personal opinion is that this performance is imitating what it was like to feel the pressure and anxiety of being on stage; lost in the euphoria of the moment and the crowd’s adulation, but deeply disorientated. It’s a panic attack.
I think the dual nature of the lyrics support this too: ‘get your f’in hands up, get up out of your seat; all eyes on me’, but then ‘hands down, pray for me’. He can’t stop wanting to be the centre of attention, but is also asking for help for it to stop.
The laughing is a protective mechanism for many people to pretect them from the anxiety they could feel or get overwhelmed by.
It's funny how so many people have reacted to this song they feel anxiety when experiencing this. Maybe it's because I live with depression, anxiety, and panic attacks myself, but I find the whole thing soothing and positive. It just resonates
Exactly how I feel, ptsd, anxiety and depression for years and it’s super calming to me. Hope you find peace ❤
Yes…. PTSD, Anxiety, and Depression here and this song is like a soothing lullaby for my anxiety…. It’s very interesting observing that dynamic… those who are comfortable with this song and those who are uncomfortable with this song. It tells a lot about a person for sure.
"Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable" Cesar A. Cruz
"what is that?"
That is genius level performance art.
People tend to forget this is scripted and crafted rawness, not a live, improved moment. Which makes it even more artistically masterful.
The insight and discipline to portray your own turmoil.
I have suffered panic attacks that lead to periods of isolation and agoraphobia since the mid 80s. That said, I am a very social & extroverted person. Worked in studio development scouting talent and developing shows as well as managing a comedy club for years. Grew up surrounded by artists, studied and wrote for a lot of comics.
I have been watching Bo since he was a kid making videos in his bedroom and telling people he was a genius. The layers of his work always astound me. I predict people will be doing thesis on him in the not to distant future. Writing books/documentaries on the body of his work.
He is flat out amazing. Enjoy the rabbit hole.
Please do the special, all of it, one song at a time. Love your genuine, honest reaction... you reacted the way any healthy, caring human being should. Earned my sub, and this thanks.
First, thanks so much for supporting the channel and my work with your ... I think that's a "super thanks"... I'm still learning the icons :p ...either way, thank you very much, it is greatly appreciated.
But also, Wow, that is a lovely compliment and I very much appreciate that as well
@That’s Not Acting Either Happy to support the channel and your continued work. I love to see positive people progress and succeed. Thank you again for being a channel I can share without trepidation or concern.
Can't help but second this. The track is good, but it's a piece of a whole that means more when placed within the special.
@@soccerwizard975 It's on the way. I'm about 6 tracks into the special. Stay tuned!
Enjoyed the reaction and subbed. 👍
I think when he screams “GET THE FUCK UP” he echoes how he spoke to himself when he was having a panic attack on stage - he forced himself to continue.
I just wanna point out that your commentary/reactions to this video are fantastic because… well… it’s exactly the intended effect.. it shows you’re listening, watching and taking it seriously.. great video. Thanks
“Is he okay?” No, no man he wasn’t. 😂
Also, he won a fucking GRAMMY over this!
I agree with the people that suggested watching the complete Netflix special. Bo Burnham made an absolute masterpiece and a different look at mental health. I can't think of anyone in this current day and age that could hold a candle to his creativity.
I would love to see your reaction to his Kanye rant - Can't handle this right now, if you haven't seen that yet. It's from his special Make Happy, from 2016, which was his last time performing live comedy for 5 years as he's talking about here. So it leads up to this song, and it's amazing and completely devestating if you really listen to his lyrics towards the end.
What I get from the laugh tracks is like when people laughed when he sang "Can't handle this", he's a comedian, he says things people laugh without thinking about the fact that he's talking about deep hard sad stuff
Would love to see more Bo Burnham! Anything you haven't seen yet!
When I first heard this song I sat and cried for nearly an hour. He deserves everything and I hope he's doing better...Great reaction video!
By all means, I'd love to see you react to the rest of Bo's 'Inside' performances.
You're right to feel uncomfortable. Bo is not doing well at this point in the special. I think you're onto something about the laugh track -- Bo discusses serious topics in all of his work, but the audience is expecting comedy. On top of that, when people are uncomfortable, they will often laugh. I think he added it because it's always been his experience -- if he were to perform this live, there would absolutely be people who would laugh at his heartbreaking monologue.
Looking forward to seeing more from you with Bo, subscribed! I would love to see you watch the whole special, but if you're going to pick individual songs, you will probably enjoy Welcome to the Internet, That Funny Feeling, and The Chicken from "Inside."
Ok I guess I don’t have to type it out this time. Well said, thanks!
Finally a reactor with empathy.
That is exactly why he put the laugh tracks there. He always found people at the live shows laugh at the wrong things. That last bit is a bit like a panic attack I have them but he explains and shows them well.
If I recall the story behind this particular song, the performance was to actually give the listener a taste of that on stage panic attack and to help people understand it.
yess please react to more of bo burnham!! i felt the same way about the laugh tracks, they sound very eerie and dark.
The whole point of the laugh tracks is that it's supposed to hit a nerve. Basic white Instagram girls would just laugh there, because they're not expecting an introspection in a stand-up show
Bo Burnham won a fu*kin Grammy for this...a performance of a semi serious just for fun song in his house complete with a laugh track😮..legendary.
Laughter can be a sort of natural nervous reaction to feeling something's... off from the usual way you perceive things. It's one of the links the link between comedy and horror. It's fundamentally a coping mechanism.
If you really haven't seen him since 2010, you should check out Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant) from his Make Happy special. That will help provide the proper context for All Eyes on Me and the entire Inside special. My two cents...
The context will be important. :) Please do the rest of this special. They are not all winners as individual pieces (to me) but as an entire work, wow. IMO - I would try to do the full special in its original order. It is a complete narrative.
this whole comedy act was an emotional rollercoaster for me
Hey thank you for such a genuine, raw reaction to this. It hit us all in a similar way, and in the context of the special it hits even harder, but I thought your honest response to this was really lovely dude
I hope you do the rest of this! Please please please do more!
That was a great reaction. I think you experienced the effect Bo was going for, and I love how you commented on your reaction to the song. I think others have mentioned it, but he has said himself in the past that he is ok. He hasn't really done any media after Inside came out, but people worried about him after Make happy. The panic attacks he talks about he really experienced, but as he mentions, he has worked on it. At the end of the day, Bo is a brilliant performer, and very good at conveying emotions. Since he hasn't talked about it, a lot is in the eye of the beholder, but my take is that he talks about things he means and has experienced, but 'leans into the emo thing', as he has put it in the past.
I would love to see more Bo reactions, and I recommend watching the whole special. It would be great if you would do it on camera.
Edit: oh, you asked in one of the comments if you should do reactions to pieces you already know. All I can say is, I would watch them.
Yes!!! Please do more Bo! Join us down in the Bo Burnham rabbit hole. We have pie, laughter, and emotional distress.
Inside is a one of a kind special. If you can, I HIGHLY recommend watching the whole thing in one go. It’s so worth it. If you haven’t seen his work since 2010 then there’s a solid chance that you haven’t gotten to witness “what.” or “Make Happy”…both of which are incredible in their own ways.

Im going around checking out reactions for this song again, I have to say you have a beautiful understanding and genuine reaction of this song and its depth. I wish for all your success you beautiful human
Hey, just found your channel. I'm hooked. Thanks for being one of the few reactors out there who actually understand what they're watching. In other words..you "get it".
Please watch more. You’re on the right mental wavelength to really appreciate his work.
Start with Can’t Handle This.
Would love to see more Bo Burnham
Bo recently (within the past few months) posted “the Inside outtakes” on UA-cam (and Netflix) that has some more content that over all didn’t really fit in with the rest of Inside. The songs are pretty good, if you haven’t heard any of them I’d recommend checking them out too
I actually didn't know about the outtakes but I did do a reaction to the Chicken (thinking it was in the show). It's available to members here and on patreon and will come out publicly on UA-cam as soon as I can make that happen.
please do react to the rest of "inside"!!! it's an absolute masterpiece. on top of that, to give more context to this song in particular i would second one other comment and say taking a look at his "kanye rant - can't handle this" performance is highly highly recommended! he's an incredible performer and quite the emotional alchemist on stage, considering most people (if not everyone) couldn't tell back then that he was often panicking internally. luckily these days he really is doing better!
additional sidenote for future reference: "art is dead" is another oldie of his that i recommend, that comments on his relationship with being a performer, and the entertainment industry as a whole. he prefaces it in the special with the words, "this song isn't funny at all but it helps me sleep at night." i look forward to see you delve into his work!
I love this comment. I hope you don't mind getting singled out but I've noticed something just under the surface of a number of comments on this video and the only way I can describe it is as a sweetness. There's a gentleness that I feel behind so many of these comments on this Bo reaction. I've been doing this for a little while now and I've come to learn that different fan basses are almost like micro-cultures and they all have their own customs and traditions and attitudes or dispositions. If you and some others who have commented here are any indication, I think I will work to make Bo a regular feature on my channel. Just to have more opportunities to have your kindness, passion and sincerity in my comments.
As for the Kanye rant...I'm pretty sure I've seen it. It's been a long time so it might be worth a revisit but I haven't gauged yet how viewers feel about reactions that aren't a "first time". What do you think? Would you still like to see me go through it?
Again, thanks for watching for the comment :) I really do appreciate you.
Emotional alchemist. Wow, that is well put.
His special is definitely worth experiencing IN SEQUENCE.
He is very good at setting and timing, as you might be able to tell.
Don't deny yourself the experience just to react for us. Watch his special bare. It's more than worth it.
I definitely recommend watching the Kanye Rant even though you’ve already seen it. This song gives so much weight to that specific performance as it was the last time he was performing his comedy on stage. Re watching it with the context of this song I still think would be interesting.
I like the laugh tracks because the best medicine for pain is to turn it into a laugh.
Man I loved this reaction and how you broke this song down
"Woah! Is he okay?"
No. Decidedly 'No'.
This one correlates directly to his Kanye rant, which was the last thing he performed before he quit for five years, as referenced in this one
Bo Burham. Everything. The specials in chronological order?
If you've never watched his "make happy" special you should do the Kanye rant next, it pairs well with this song.
This song has so much to it but my main interpretation is that this is depressions beckoning call with Bo playing the part of depression
I'd highly recommend you react to the whole special in order so you understand the entire context. 😉
Definitely check out more of the special, it's so damn good. Even the outtakes are good
bo burnham
Subbed for this awesome bo reaction thanks
You missed why he added it the laugh track its a whole long story he is telling they are perfectly placed the meaning is incredible
Hands up celebrating he's success.
Hands down pray for me (quiting comedy)
Hands up he's reentering (coming inside/ joining society)
Hands down now pray for me (he's locked inside again.)
Inside I think is referring to he's head and society as well as physically inside.
The laugh track inclusion is genius, genuine genius.
He is alone, editing and performing as you indicated. The laugh track is a macabre addition.... like someone telling a joke to a mirror. That laugh track inclusion alone has layers of context to the humour AND the message of the song. Your discomfort is one of those layers..
Brilliant reaction - subbed :)
Yes! Do more reactions from Inside!!!!
Great reaction! You NEED to watch the special "Inside" that this is from. Watch it all in one go and react to it all and chop it up if you want, but trust me... watch the whole thing.
You are correct. Bo is a genius with the demons that accompany geniuses. Please delve into more Bo! Kanye Rant and everything.
It's interesting that the song makes you feel tense. It never did for me, the opposite actually, I found it calming to listen to. I went back and watched it again really looking at the visuals and now I get what you mean. The song sounds beautiful, but his body language and the filming language add a really different tone to it.
Most reactors don't notice how uncomfortable this song is meant to be, they just think it's a funny song to jam out to. I'm glad you notice it and feel it. They think Bo is only comedy and don't think deeply about anything.
I'm not going to lie, this hurts my soul watching this. It's like watching a manic episode and watching someone spiraling down before they take their life. "You say the ocean is rising, like I give a shit. you say the whole world is ending, honey... it already did. you aren't going to slow it, heavens know you tried." Those lines just broke me. I really encapsulates how I've felt about everything in this country for the last 10 or so years.... maybe longer.
that desperate laugh at the end hurts my soul.
For the laugh tracks, I feel like its one of those things that inherently aren't funny, but finding the humor in those situations is what helps people cope with the hard times. The panic attacks on stage are obviously not a great place to have them, we all know that. Its the fact that he said it and the timing that makes it humorous. Then "The funniest thing happened" again covid isn't why it was funny, more like the irony that he was like "I'm better now, I want to go out" and the world said "No!"
Bo also addresses the issue of "how do you know if what you're doing is even funny since you have no audience to supply the audible feedback of laughter" within the special, and maybe its a matter of he misjudged how many people would think it funny.
Once you see the whole special and see the context of the song it will make more sense. Watch his Kanye Rant to understand his mental state.
3:59 I believe he put a laugh track to show how his audience would usually laugh when he said things 5 years ago that were actually a cry for help.
Edit: never mind you pretty much summed it up perfectly!
i love this reaction so much
i cannot wait to see more bo burnham reactions! def subscribing!
"is he okay?"
Nope he is 100% not
I’d love to see what you think of the rest of the special
We're going to go were everybody knows everybody KNOWS.
Oh and on the laugh track moments you didn't like, he did that on purpose because it was a laugh at his own pain moment.
It's more rare to not understand the context of this piece without prior knowledge. You understand. The direct precursor, the exact next piece you should experience is "Can't Handle This". Ignore any others before that. Can't Handle This is the last performance before the Inside special, and you will have the entire picture. Good on you.
As an acting/performance people I feel you'll have a better time with things like "White womans instagram" "30" and "welcome to the internet" while this entire special is amazing those pop in my head as having more performance to them then others. 100% would love to see more.
It's intended to be disturbing. Yes, Bo is a genius.
5:33 Because its the absolute opposite of 'the funniest thing' ... its called a joke. You're allowed to laugh
What's the background melody of you video?
I want you to watch the entire thing. I would watch a three hour youtube video of someone watching this 1hr special if it meant I got to feel even a small bit of how I felt watching it for the first time.
Liked it cuz you get it. You get it
[5:36] Because it's painful. ^-^
And laughter is used to ease the pain.
React to "Sad" from Bo Burnham if you didn't yet or just watch again to remember it.
Up.: Of course, not everyone's reason, but for a lot of us.
Those laugh tracks remind me of a few reactors (not you) on youtube who react to his videos and laugh at the serious parts
Yes, regretfully, I have seen this too on one occasion.
one form of comedy is absurdity - like something so outrageous happens, which shouldn't follow from the premise and the absurdity of it all not making sense has us react with laughter - as a form of social acceptance - like as to ask "that's so fucking stupid/outrageous/extreme that can't be real can it?"
So while expressing the misfortune and despair of getting shut down by the virus JUST as he gets prepared to *return* - he's asking us "that's just so fucking abdsurd, isn't it?" and our answer is to laugh. which some of us feel bad for because it's in the same breath as a call for sympathy or help.
People laugh at the mention of the pandemic (or put a laugh track to it) for the same reason anyone laughs at a comedic mentioning of a tragedy. It helps us cope with it. We all went through it, we all know it sucks, but the timing of it was such that it seems like something is intentionally messing with us sometimes. So, in a way, it becomes funny. You either laugh or you let it drag you down.
JEFF was HERE 👇🏆
Laughing at a joke about the pandemic is not laughing about the pandemic. The joke was the understatement, the matter of fact deliver, and the subversion of expectation in using a common phrase that would fit perfectly, to end that story, if the context were not quite the opposite. It's harmful, down to the soul, to live with a filter on your laughter.
I am so glad you noticed the laugh track.
It's intentional, one thing that he has hinted at a lot over the years is how much he hates that the audience laughs and cheers at what he's saying even when he's being serious.
I would say "Sad" was his first real attempt at bringing up this problem, but I think he really drives the point home in "Can't Handle This". After he finishes his rant, he moves into a serious section of the performance. He talks about how he wants to keep performing, but the audience has become a blessing and a curse because he's starting to feel like the audience is laughing at him more than laughing with him.
He talks about trying to give the audience something he can't give himself (which explains the title of the special, "Make Happy".
And as soon as he's done with saying all of this, the audience starts cheering and laughing.. It's so disgusting and sad to watch..
This comment got way longer than intended..
Anyway, the laugh tracks are added at specific points in the "Inside" special as another hint toward that feeling.
The saddest part of it is even after five years that's still eating at him..
Enjoyed the video! You should check out Welcome to the internet!
I totally understood his timing of the laugh tracks. Dealt with similir shit for years myself and I wouldn't say people find it funny but one thing I have learned is that most people say they care but when it boils down to it they really don't. We have been in a mental health pandemic now since the turn of the millennium yet people are too busy worrying about a cold. Its horse shit.
It's unfortunate that this was recommended for you to watch first. It really is the culmination of literally everything that can't before this moment.
IMO the song is upsetting for a lot of f
i would love to see you react to kanye rant if you haven't seen it, i loved your reaction
You should watch it In order if ur not gonna watch the special but i recommend the special and then chop what you want for your YT
Please please please watch the rest. And it's fairly important to watch the in between scenes. If you do more of these, you got a sub for me!
They're on the way!
I have a totally different interpretation to this song to basically everyone else I've seen. I don't think it has basically anything to do with the pandemic. I think he's talking to and about himself throughout the entire song.
React to inside and the outtakes!
You should definitely react to the rest
Because they're laughing at his pain and suffering, not really listening to what he's actually saying. Just because he phrased it as a "funny story". I watched a few reaction videos and mostly everything laughed with the laughter, not quite connecting what he's really trying to show and say.
I'm honestly not sure why everyone recommends "All Eyes On Me" first because I think without the context of the rest of the special (and honestly, context from some of his previous specials), it doesn't hit nearly as hard. I honestly don't like this song as a standalone song; I think it really only makes sense after having gone through the emotional rollercoaster of the rest of the special.
That being said, thanks for your reaction! Really glad you've started on this Bo journey
your take on the laugh track is interesting to me. i know where you're coming from, certainly, but i've always appreciated the irony in it. he's obviously adding it for a reason, and perhaps it's to share how it can feel as a performer to face inappropriate laughter. maybe it has to do with seeking attention, and the double edged sword of using humor even while trying to make a point. or commentary on how people can sometimes laugh as a form of dismissal. maybe it has something to do with cognitive dissonance? hmn..
