  • After over two years of promising and waiting, I give you the tutorial for one of the most iconic voices of the brony fandom: WoodenToaster. It's fairly light on explanation, so please check out the VoxFX tutorial archive if you are lost. Anyway, enjoy! /)
    WoodenToaster is one of the great pioneers of brony music, and a huge inspiration of mine. I'm so glad to finally be able to bring this tutorial to you. I also want to apologize for the extremely long wait; I wanted to make sure I covered the foundations before getting to this one, and that ended up taking longer than I expected. So, sorry for that.
    If you have any questions, please ask away in the comments. If you would like to request a tutorial on a specific vocal effect or voice-like sound, please send me a UA-cam message. =)

    My only comment here would be not to do a quick fifth for the harmony, I always create each vocal track with a harmony that works for the song. Good stuff man

      Right, that's what I figured. As each song is an entire mix, it's hard for me to hear exactly what notes you used at each point in the song. Though to be fair, the goal my videos is to give a close approximation of the effect, knowing that I'll probably never get it exactly right (as I wasn't there when the effect was made). I hope I was able to do it justice.

    This tutorial was great. I’ve improved my vocals so much. I was wondering if you could figure out another vocal effect? In Pendulums’s album In Silico, there is an introductory song called Star Wipe which has some interesting vocals effects, but I can’t seem to replicate them. Keep up the good work!

    Also I believe at "a royal farewell" the words "a royal" are one octave deeper than the rest of the song. not too sure, but they sound at least darker, than in your version, this might be Glaze's voice but I'm not sure.

    Finally it's out!
    QUESTION
    can an usb mic work in an audio interface or mixer? I've been seeing some stuff about USB mics being horrible and should upgrade to an XLR.
    In my experience, a de-esser messes with the reverb, how come?
    And lastly, why didn't you use the accapella of the original song?

    • @ShallieDragon
      @ShallieDragon  7 років тому

      +CriticKid 1) I haven't really tried to use a USB with an audio interface, partially because it's not necessary (USB mics have them built-in). As for quality, all of my videos made before February 2016 used a USB mic. You be the judge.
      2) Are you putting the de-esser before or after the reverb? I usually put it before, and it sounds fine to me.
      3) because I couldn't find it online.

    • @VoodooGMusic
      @VoodooGMusic 7 років тому +1

      You cannot use a USB microphone with an Audio interface, at least not in a DAW, once your DAW sound driver is set to your interface, the USB mic connected to your PC will not appear as a recording option, it is also not possible to connect the USB microphone directly to the audio interface, since it outputs a digital signal and an audio interface has analogue inputs, and no there are no adapters.
      Also XLR microphones are not better than USB mics, but USB mics cannot be used with an audio inteface, limiting the processing power for your DAW and the control over your sound system, without an audio interface you're also unable to connect Studio Monitors or midi devices, which have no USB port.

    So what I am wondering is: Does it matter if the vocals arent excactly in the scale? Because if you move it up a fith there will be probably notes who are not in the scale of the track.

    • @ShallieDragon
      @ShallieDragon  6 років тому

      What matters is the relationship between the three harmonies. As long as they form a chord of root, fifth, and octave, it will work fine. It's basically the equivalent of a guitar Octavio pedal.

      That sounds like you may be using the demo for NewTone.

  • @Alitas-jl3sn
    @Alitas-jl3sn 7 років тому

    This can also be done by making resynthesis in harmor

    • @ShallieDragon
      @ShallieDragon  7 років тому

      +EV3_57680 it can, sort of. Harmor can't flatten the pitch in the same way NewTone can.

    • @Alitas-jl3sn
      @Alitas-jl3sn 7 років тому

      First the autotune is done in "NewTone" and then the effects are done in Harmor

      +EV3_57680 I haven't tried that before. I bet it could have some cool results.

    • @ShallieDragon
      @ShallieDragon  7 років тому

      It's not exactly the same, though. Harmor's Harmonizer simply highlights the harmonics according to the matrix on the right. It doesn't actually duplicate the signal. Whereas the NewTone copies method actually layers different harmonic series on top of each other, resulting in a different pattern of phase cancelation (which also alters the sibilant consonants in a way that the Harmonizer does not).
