    The more I see about Paralives, the more I look forward to see where they go with the game! I think I would really enjoy gradual aging/growing, but not something I feel like I need. I liked shopping for clothes in Sims 2, but I also like how all of the clothes and accessories are available in Sims 4, so I could go either way with that too lol I'm excited to see where this game goes

    When talking about editing bodies, I think it's actually more customisable with sliders than push-and-pull method. After all, there's only so many areas on the body a player can click without them suddenly being 1cm away from accidentally editing something else. Even modded The Sims 4 sliders have to replace some of the existing ones (e.g. the height slider mod replacing feet size slider). With sliders like in Paralives it's just a matter of adding to the list already grouped for a certain body area, so you can fit more sliders and even more customisation.
    Besides, Paralives devs can't even use push-and-pull, even if it's better, because EA patented it back in 2013.

    • @SimmerErin

      That's an interesting way to look at it. It does have the advantage of allowing for more precision in certain regions.

    It's pretty astonishing how refreshing it is to have a team that actually knows how to respond and communicate with their growing fanbase about their game. Far too often you see other companies ( you know which ones) offer "roadmaps", keep secrets about gameplay features (like, the basics/main features etc.), make far too many promises or dress up their content to dredge up hype, only to use the tried and true 'release it no; fix it later' method.
    While I have very little doubt this'll be some sort of disappointment/unfinished product on launch, I really do hope Paralives does well. It had a rough beginning, but it's steadily getting there. And I just love how we get to see almost every step in development. Even seeing the _small_ things just shows much much care these dev's are putting into this game. Of course they can't put in every single feature people ask for (push back is good in the long run), but I'm glad they at least consider some of said suggestions. And with the game having mod support in the long run.. the possibilities are practically endless.

    • @SimmerErin
      @SimmerErin  2 роки тому +6

      it's the pros and cons of having your own studio. It's risky and a lot of work, but you're also in control of how you communicate, your schedule and so forth
      It's certainly not going to be a perfect game- I think some feel it will or must be

    • @alwaysannoyedforever518
      @alwaysannoyedforever518 2 роки тому

      They also have said that they plan for the game to be a pay once, free updates later kind of things. So they could introduce a lot of what we ask for later, after they make sure they have a good base going.

    i feel like most people sorely underestimate the sheer amount of time, let alone energy that goes into making a game.
    a life sim game is a huge undertaking, there's a reason there's no real competitors for the sims franchise. EA is a billion dollar company.
    it's just so odd to me that people would say they're making no progress. like you said, the confirmed features are ambitous as it is.
    and on top of that people are wanting these oddly specific features to make things more "realistic".
    meanwhile it's not realistic to expect very specific features to be included in a game like this, espically at launch.
    like you said, gameplay is definitely going to make or break a game.

      @SimmerErin  2 роки тому +6

      Oh I agree! I think while it's possible with today's technology is a huge feat and not even something I'd really feel I need. Growth spurts could be a nice in between

    • @onidaaitsubasa4177
      @onidaaitsubasa4177 2 роки тому +3

      Well, both methods have similar difficulties, a lot of the animations would have to be target guided, like if they type a computer, target style animation would insure they type on the keys and not under the desk, I have noticed that Sims seems to use both methods for different objects or other sims, for example if an adult has a shorter CC body and they play the piano, their hands are under the piano, but when they type on a computer their hands are on the keys, but their arms are at different angles to reach than standard height, and when they give hugs they hug well, as their hands are targeting certain areas on other sims, so both gradual growth for children or growth spurts would require some target style animations, cause with standard animations for every single growth spurt they would need a different animation which would be much more work and increase the size of the game, and be more complicated to put in the game.

      true! I think there are advantages- looks like a pretty nuanced slider system too

  • @SkiesTurnedGrey
    @SkiesTurnedGrey 2 роки тому +11

    I don't understand the argument where people are saying they're concerned about the limitations of the sliders in the paramaker. Even in Sims 4, character creation is done entirely through "sliders". They're just invisible, hidden. But when you click and drag on a body part to change it in Sims 4, you're still dragging it between two extremes for a specified feature (you know, when the grid for the feature flashes red by dragging it to its max in one direction or the other). You can click on the nose and drag it right or left to widen or narrow it, and up and down to make it higher or lower. Turn the face to profile, click the nose again, and you can drag it left and right to change how "long" the nose is, i.e. how much it protrudes from the face. That right there just described 3 different sliders. Every aspect of a feature on a Sim model is determined between 2 extremes, a min and a max, on a hidden slider. The paramaker can accomplish with sliders EVERYTHING the Sims 4 CAS tool can accomplish, provided the developers include a corresponding slider to each aspect/feature that is tweakable in Sims 4 CAS.

    • @fransmith3255
      @fransmith3255 2 роки тому +3

      Exactly. The main difference is that one is invisible on the body and the other is not. They are both sliders. Paralives might even have more sliders, and the positive thing is that you can actually see what you're sliding. The invisibility thing certainly looks good and seems more slick from an aesthetic viewpoint, but sometimes it's hard to fine the right slider. That won't be a problem in Paralives.

    • @SimmerErin
      @SimmerErin  2 роки тому +2

      fair points. also, I failed to mention, but EA apparently has a patent for their system so they simply can't do it that way anyway

    Oh I’d love having some more “mini” life stages in the aging process. I always hated how in the sims kids basically go from being 2 at the toddler stage, jumping all the way up to 10 at the child stage, and then when they become teens they pop straight up to 16 years old. I’d especially love a “tween” life stage! There’s such a huge difference between being 13ish and 16ish and I never feel like that early teenagerhood is represented in sims games

    I think the biggest challenge with the game is creating live mode interactions and making progress on Interaction multitasking. So, it's good that Alex addressed both in the August recap.
    Also, growth spurt. I would be nice to see the young ones not aged directly from 8 to 16. So, this will be interesting to see how the Parafolk will gradually age.

    The more I see and hear, the more I like. It's clear to me that they are progressing but they've also got a ways to go. Which is fine IMO.
    My only concern over any feature is that it works well. If that means scaling it back for the start then so be it. Do what is manageable, don't do it because it sounds cool or complex but doesn't work well. They seem to be going the better route here, so that's good.
    As for pre-built houses they should kinda do what that 'other' game does. Nearer launch they let builders have the game early and they build the houses (easing pressure off the devs). The devs then pick the best ones to launch with.

    The feature that sounds most interesting to me is buying clothes in game (I mean, with in-game money, because if they were micro-transactions then it would be terrible). I think that going to a store and buy CC clothes sounds great, but I think it might not be feasible, so to me, it would be enough if they decide to only include a portion of the clothing in the PAM and the other pieces can be bought on a in-game store. Because, I know I'm comparing things, but in TS4 I think it makes no sense to have stores with mannequins which you can buy clothes from, if you already have everything in CAS.

      They’ll keep it free if we refuse to pay for it. I kind of let the behavior slide for Sims since at this point modders are basically unofficial developers for the game (half the fixes I’ve got for bugs and half the features I use daily come from mods, not from EA!) so IMO they’ve earned some cash if people are willing to donate to them, and most of them just do early access patreon releases with a free version coming later so it’s usually not *permanently* paywalled.
      But it would just feel gross to profit off of a little indie game like this

    @chihuahuasrule1175 2 роки тому

    I really hope they set life stage sizes for the height sliders. I would love it if their paras could have gradual height sliders, but the technical implementation of it would be impractical or a nightmare for them. For each height variation, different animation settings would have to occur and doing one of them is a pain, then they'd have to create new animations for each height settings for future dlc. Creating clothing for each variation can be tricky too, even though I know some games allow for clothing stretching on the body.
    Paralives showed a video of them animating a para sitting in a chair a while back to show the difficulty of it. Animation a peck on the cheek for variable height settings is another example. It is the reason why the sims' genders have the same height in the sims game. I think they should set no more than 5-6 lifestage height settings if they want to be generous and focus more on other aspects of their game development like actual gameplay.

    • @SimmerErin

      One thing that is interesting is that they are using procedural animations; because of this, they won't have quite the same issues as if they were using an animation system like sims 4. That said, it certainly will still be challenging

      same

    • @fransmith3255
      @fransmith3255 2 роки тому +2

      Me too. And gameplay depth is not found in the 'you-can-do-anything-with-any-character' thing, no matter how wide that is. That's not gameplay. Gameplay is found in the consequences for gameplay decisions (staying up and therefore being tired the next day - and coffee doesn't fully fix that), the unexpected stuff the game throws at you (the slim chance of shock twins when parents were not wanting children at all, a shy Para that has difficulty making friends, personality clashes, trait clashes (neat vs untidy Paras), varied attractions (friends and lovers), siblings fighting, a Para that has less than perfect potential in some area so you have to point that Para in a different direction where they do have potential, not being able to get a certain job because either their education isn't high enough (so they need to go back to school) or it's already taken by another Para, things fail sometimes, etc, etc etc. THAT creates gameplay. THAT also creates variability and replayability, where every family and Para you play is different. In a life sim it's found in the limitations placed with personality and traits, and how those interact with other personalities and traits, it's found in trade-offs between gameplay choices, money limitations, and some realistic limitations within the world. Gameplay is having some stuff happen that you can't necessarily plan for, but need to adapt to. I don't mean to a degree that totally dictates play, but there has to be SOME of these things. The Sims 1 and 2 had it. The Sims 3 had it, but to a lesser degree. The Sims 4 has no gameplay whatsoever, because there are none of these things. Thus The Sims 4 is utterly boring after five minutes.
      Should the game offer settings/cheats to change stuff/get out of stuff for players who only want a digital dolls house to record their pre-planned imaginings? Sure. But we can't call it a game if it has no game features. The Sims 4 isn't a game. It's closer to an animation studio than a game. It's a dolls house because the actual 'game' happens in your head, not on the screen (the screen is just the resulting recording), and arguably most of us can do THAT without the screen at all. The Sims 4's slogan should be 'Playing with Mannequins', not 'Playing with Life', lol!!

    I'm not sure I'd like having outfits locked out of PaM since it would limit my creativity in character creation -- however, it would be interesting if buying outfits was a away to get extra outfit slots that could be switched to in game. (Maybe I should mention that idea to the Paralives team directly).
    It seems that to me that if a situation that pushed relationships into a long-distance status that you wouldn't need any special mechanics and that the need to write or call more to maintain the relationship would be a natural consequence not having the in person interactions.

      I'm very mixed on it. Idk how weird this is or complex but you could have an entirely open vs challenge mode (idk) or I guess you could do it like sims 4- locked items but w/ a cheat to unlock them
      yeah I'm not sure I see a need to distinguish long distance? I'm mostly just interested in how relationships work generally

    I personally, think they're doing a great job thus far. Was really hoping it would come out this year. Doesn't seem like it will. Even early access would be cool and we could be Guinea Pigs for bugs and glitches but on the other hand, would like the game to be complete and fleshed out prior to release. Sims 4 has jaded me with their constant problems.

    So, yeah, I think making that a feature, now of all times, is a waste. Maybe, maaaaybe when the game is out ,and they have several worlds it would be a cool lil update. But it's definitely not needed on release

    Paralives could be the best game ever but I feel simmed out. I need a game that keeps me playing sims from birth to death. If a sim is not going to marry and reproduce, I reset them to NPCs. As soon as a sim reaches young adult, I reset the parents as they've overstayed their welcome. I feel I shouldn't be doing this.

    I really fucking love the idea of gradual aging. I hate having a sim go from 8 to 18 and develop the worst fashion taste of all time in the process. It’s so hard to be immersed in a story or family when you skip 70% of a sims life.
