    I can't remember for sure when the rule change went into effect, but the guy on the field is a judge. Back then there were a few that would walk around the field with clipboards and tape recorders. Percussion judge, and I want to say a music and a marching judge, but someone correct me because I'm probably remembering incorrectly. Anyway, they added a rule later on that doesn't allow any judges on the field. There are still some on field level, but I don't think they're allowed to go past the sideline. Oh and the robotic guys being passed overhead was just more production line sort of stuff. The fully-built robot coming out at the end of the line. I really wish there was better video, because there were a lot of cool moments that were missed due to the less-than-ideal camera work.

    The DCI Championship moved in to Lucas Oil in 2009. Prior to that they were in different stadiums, usually big college bowls, mostly east coast. This video was the Cavalier's finals performance. Prior to 2009, the DCI Finals rotated among different cities like the World Cup or the Olympics. This looks to be at the University of Wisconsin.
    This was the very first DCI show I ever watched, and it remains my favorite to this day. The visual instructor for my high school marching band was a rookie in the baritone line for this. He always liked to brag about how he's front row on the 50 during the opening impact.

    The Cavaliers actually had a great video release where they discussed the design of this show. The cool stretching and manipulation of that block was the robots trying to "start" the machine. The repetitive trumpet lick and subsequent "whack" was sort of like a skipping CD. The emotive 3rd movement that ends with a heartbeat is the robots becoming sentient - having a heart, so to speak. This was PEAK Cavalier show design, before they kinda started to have an identity crisis. A nearly 20 year old show still stands up.

    The guy on the field is one of the judges with others out of view and in the press box. This show was in fact the finals back when it moved around to different venues in different years. It’s now permanently in Indy which that move happened a few years after 2006.

  • @dennissmathers898
    @dennissmathers898 10 днів тому +3

    That performance was at University of Wisconsins Camp Randall Stadium, where I believe the finals were held during that era. The event moved to Indianapolis a few years ago and will probably stay there, mainly because its indoors and would not be affected by weather. The clipboard guy was a DCI judge as they are judged (at that time anyway) on the field as well as the pressbox. Just to try to answer a few questions. As good as this show was, the Cavaliers 2002 show "FRAMEWORKS" is considered by many the best show visually in history. I agree on the visual. It still has no peer.

  • @nicholashoffman2706
    @nicholashoffman2706 10 днів тому +1

    Think of it like the Borg from Star Trek. The corps is being assimilated by the “machine,” sort of represented by the individual members being passed over the color guard in that crowd-surfing kind of move. At the very end of the show, the lone snare drummer plays the same lick from the very beginning of the show as one last spark of individuality before succumbing to the machine, and the entire corps “powers down” at the end.
    Also, for your own personal enjoyment and enrichment, I would recommend seeing a high cam view of this show so you can just see the drill from a more aerial perspective. While the music in this show is cool, the drill was the star of the show.

    The Cavalier's nickname is "The Green Machine." In 2006 they embraced the name totally and made a show of it. Brilliant designers! The Cavies had a dynasty in the 2000s. Champions in 2000 (1st place tie with the Cadets), 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2006. Except for 2004, which was music from James Bond, all of their music was original. They are also DCI's last remaining all male corp.
    "Who's this guy walking around in the middle of the field? Get out of the way mate!" LMAO! That the percussion judge. Prior to 2023, there were judges for each caption (percussion, brass, and color guard) allowed on the field. They wear tan slacks and green Polos. There have been more than a few field judges bowled over in DCI's 52 year history. In 2023 (or maybe 2022) DCI decided to finally bar judges from the field. They are still on the sidelines.
    Too bad the person who requested this one din't request the high cam video, so much of that impressive drill is lost in this mutti cam one. Here's a link to the high cam: ua-cam.com/video/FaC0jmmPAtw/v-deo.html

    Guy on the field is a judge. Thery used to have a few on the field (I hit one once) they aren't on the field anymore for their safety.

    so DCI finals used to travel changing venues each year, there have even been A Finals in California. The guy with the clip board is a field judge there are 2 one for horns the other strictly for percussion. the percussion judges are the most athletic as they follow the drum line, until lately. in 2022 a judge was hit by a bass drum in finals for open class and it broke his arm. since then, they have to stay on the front sideline for safety. old vids you'll see judges miss players by inches dodging at the last second. the straight line drill formation is a Company Front (you had it!). great video

    Charlie, you just made what has been a horrible day end on the beat of ways🙏 I don’t know if I have told you but I am a Cavalier (once a Cavalier always a Cavalier). You just reacted to The Cavaliers when they were the corp to beat. This was the DCI Finals and the Cavaliers were the World Champions. As a matter of fact, The Cavaliers were World Champions in 1992., 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006 and should have won in 2003 and 2007. you asked some great questions during this reaction so I will try to answer them. First of all you’re correct the finals were not always in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium. DCI finals used to be in a different city every year until 2009 for a partnership with the city of Indianapolis due to its centralized location, in brand new stadium with a retractable roof as there have been finals that were marched in the rain (not fun) and Indianapolis is home to the offices of DCI. The show that you just reacted to was in Madison Wisconsin. I saw it in comments already but judges used to walk around on the field during the performance in order to get an up close view things like technique, footwork, equipment work from the colorguard and the percussion judge you would always find running around following the percussion where they went. There are definitely sure that lead up to finals all summer long. Some of these are in small high school stadiums there are bigger regional competitions typically held the other large stadiums like lucas oil. these shows are very organic in the way that they change sometimes drastically from the beginning of the summer to finals as the design team sees things that work better. The show you just reacted to was designed by one of the biggest legends in DCI history named Michael Gaines. there were a few excellent drill writers before him but he definitely evolutionized the Activity by creating non stop drill that most say was choldiscopic and every movement led to another beautiful form. Not only did he write the drill but he was huge and coming up with the entire visual concept including the color guard. his ability to hear piece of music and tell that story through his visual concepts is what put him in the DC Hall of Fame. you will see as you see react to more of the shows from the 1990s 2000s and early 2010s that drill much larger role in the show and there was always a lot more movement. I love great drill which is why I marched in The Cavaliers however I do understand how the activity has had to evolve into the types of shows you see now with a lot more props and more staging rather than drill. I love all the shows that you’re doing I still can’t wait to see my two PayPal request 2014 Blue Devils scoring in 99.65 which is the highest score ever and star of Indiana 1991 Roman images… Star of Indiana was a brilliant corp well ahead of its time which you will see. Keep them coming my friend😁👍

    There used to be two judges on the field. You know of the one for percussion. The other one we call the M&M judge, which stood for Marching and maneuvering. The M&M judge was also on the floor in Winter Guard (which you haven’t explored yet.) Those judges were split in two downstairs captions, one strictly for Equipment and one strictly for Movement. We sit low on the 50 of the gym floor instead of on the performance floor. If the judge was in front of you, he won’t know your show and have been whacked upside the head.
    I can’t wait for you to explore WGI (Winter Guard International,) which is like a sister to DCI. It is where the color guards from DCI and High Schools compete from January to April, when they have their World Championships. Your going to be AMAZED!

    "Who is that guy and why is he in the way?" That's an on-field judge. DCI judges are often both on the field and in a pressbox above, but the rules on this has changed over the years. You'll see some years where the judges are obvious, a few where there are none on the field at all. Fun fact: everyone from high school marching band students to DCI corps members know it's the judges job to get out of *your* way, not the other way around. So, if he's in your spot he gets plowed. Hence, all their hopping and popping around. They're trying to stay alive. :D

    It’s not a robot costume. If you look at older dci video’s every corps had an identity, as in colour of uniform and head gear. It’s wasn’t until recently(maybe the last 7years or so) that corps slowly ditched the identity or as we knew it (uniform) there would be tweaks in the uniform ever now and then but you knew who was entering the field as soon as you saw the corps. But these days the use the (uniform) to enhance the overall production. I’m an old y when it comes to dc, started when I was 8 and left when I was 25, in between that I auditioned for the blue devils in 2002 got in but stupidly didnt go because a girl. I live in the uk and the uk used to have a good dc scene but it’s really struggling now. It’s nice to see first reactions to a show I watched live 18 years ago.

    Anytime someone says a corps has a clean drill I compare them to 2002 - 2006 Cavaliers. Every. Time. Honorable mention to Mad World too. Nobody owns the field like The Cavliers have.

    As good a drum line that was, the corps that finished in 2nd was even better. The guy in the green shirt “in the way” was a judge. The drill writer at the time was doing some innovative stuff

    Incredible drill, as were all the Cavaliers' productions during their peak. Forgettable music, though. My favorite of theirs will be the 007 show. For me, there needs to be at least one score I can latch on to and relate to, something I'll be humming afterwards.

    It's about AI becoming more human. Machines taking over. Machines making Machines. Factories, the motion of machines, the sounds of machines working. Man created machines and now machines are being created to be Man.
