  • The 38th IESE Mobility Meeting focused on the sector's next significant target in the EU, the commercial end-of-life of internal combustion by 2035.
Dr. Rainer Feurer, SVP at BMW, noted that the automotive industry's transformation in the next decade will exceed the change factor of the past hundred years.
According to Karl Dums, Senior Project Lead for eFuels at Porsche AG, the only way to keep up with that is through electromobility because that is the only possible path the regulation allows.
Dr. Robert Meyer, SVP of Vehicle Line E-Tron Models at Audi AG, emphasized that this transition should be seen as an opportunity rather than a burden. And that LFP (lithium iron phosphate) will play a major role.
However, Diego Perdones, Global CCO & MD Spain of C2X at APMoller Maersk Group, expressed some skepticism about whether we are on the right path speed-wise and acknowledged that multiple challenges need to be overcome. He also suggested that using the term "defossilize" rather than "decarbonize" better reflects the process that needs to happen-
Prof. Marc Sachon, IESE Mobility's Chairman, also discussed the potential of e-fuels as a complementary solution. While e-fuels may be more expensive than fossil fuels, Sachon highlighted that they offer the advantage of helping to solve the emissions problem with the existing fleet of vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, and even shipping.
Natalia Turón, General Secretary & Global Head of Corporate Strategy and Sustainability at SEAT/CUPRA, explained that the Volkswagen Group is currently making its most significant investment at an industrial level ever seen in their country and calls for support in their efforts.
Vicente Segura, Automotive Responsible Partner at Deloitte Spain, added that Spain needs to catch up with Europe's adoption of electric vehicles and accelerate its adoption.
José Ignacio Moya, Managing Director, FACONAUTO, pointed out that the problem is that customers are not currently following the lead and that the administration is not providing sufficient support.
Jordi Llidó, Manufacturing Responsible Partner at Deloitte Spain, insisted on the need for capital to support the transformation and stressed the importance of implementing a value rather than a volume strategy.
During the workshops, one topic discussed was the business models surrounding the charging of electric vehicles. Bernd Edelmann, the CFO at Ionity, elaborated on different scenarios based on whether people will stay in their cars during the charging process or utilize services in the surrounding area.
