#FACT Walter Afanasieff: The Man Behind the Piano and co-produced most of the songs in Music Box and All I Want for Christmas! MARIAH CAREY had all the ideas of her songs! She wrote them all!!!! She just needed someone who can play the piano or any musical instruments to translate them!
Exactly, this is what happens when you praise someone too much. You always end up praising them for work they didn't do. Mariah Carey wrote Vision of Love.
It's a request. Please change the title. Walter Afanasieff isn't even remotely "The man behind Mariah's Music Box and AIWFCIY" Music Box has songs whose lyrics were written by Mariah solo. Hero, Anytime You Need A Friend, Dreamlover all have Mariah as the solo lyricist. It was Mariah who came up with the melody and Walter was someone who helped her in composing difficult chord changes which could very well have been the work of a pianist too. Walter just co-composed the melody and was the co-producer. Mariah basically did 70-90% of the writing job on these songs solo, then how can Walter be "THE Man" behind the success? Walter has been an excellent producer and he has a magnificent career as a producer/co-producer. Not as a songwriter. Walter should be known for the actual work that he did.
I am so happy I am not alone in wanting the title changed, thank you. I really don't have a clue what possessed a follow musician to make such an untruthful title. Walter did an amazing job on I Knew I Loved You, but when it comes to Mariah Carey, it's never for, it's with or solo. The conversation that really needs to start happening is conversations about top lining (mental songwriting) because it's just as real as non-top lining is. And until we have those much-needed conversations, there will always be a question among the ignorant of whether or not Mariah actually writes her songs, and that's not fair at all.
As a Mariah's fan, I completely disagree. Walter is one of the people behind Music Box's success (Tommy, Mariah and Walter) : Hero, the producing of Without You, ANYNF, Dreamlover, it's all Walter choices and Mariah herself told that Music Box was not really her style, while still her most popular and famous album... Yes, Mariah wrote or co-wrote the lyrics. Yes she had melodic ideas, but we don't know if she had it first or if they had it together. She told that he was playing on the piano and she answered by singing and it was a ping-pong session until they found an interesting melodic idea. She never told he was playing what she was singing until very recently. By the way, melodic ideas is not enough to be credited as a composer. Walter is the one who developped theses ideas in the level of a true a song. Mariah doesn't play any instrument. She doesn't have any knowledge in music composing or theory. She is not abble to recognize a note played on a piano. After 30 years in the music industry as a producer, it's very weird... I think that if Mariah wants to be credited as a composer (and she's not but by her most toxic fans - she's only credited as a producer and lyricist by the music industry), she has to deserve it, by learning music and being independant in composing. You can feel when it''s Walter or Jermaine or Babyface or David Cole, not only in terms of producing but of composing... If it was all Mariah, you wouldn't feel such a difference.
It's Mariah's songs. Her lyrics. Her melodies. Her harmonies. Even her chords many times. Walter helped her with the chords, and the music at large. But in no way is he "the man behind Music Box or All I want for Christmas..." They had not existed without Mariah. Without Walter, they had just sounded a bit different, but they had existed. Big difference.
0:22 - 0:30 this reminds me of Mariah's early ballads produced by Mariah and Walter. How I wish they would work again in future since they make such fantastic music as a team.

Sad that Walter was just a product of Sony prison and stabbed Mariah in the back after she trusted him for so many years. No wonder she talks very little about him since 1998. Tommy even held a knife to Mariah’s cheek right in front of Walter and someone else and no one protected Mariah. He may be very talented but he is a small man.
We weren’t there, we don’t know the dynamics of the entire relationship. I don’t meddle into my friends relationships. I don’t think Mariah should hold Walter accountable for an incident like that. I would be just as scared as Mariah, if the knife incident happened. Mariah should learn to forgive and leave things in the past. I love her, but her biggest flaw is being so grudge-mental. Walter has asked to be forgiven, and he shows remorse. Mariah is the bad guy here.
You can want all you for life, but it won't happen. If he went to the press and trashed you, you wouldn't want to work with him again either. And, if you didn't know that he did that to Mariah, look it up.
I wonder. Does he write the lyrics or just the melody. I think Mariah wrote most of her lyrics. Cuz with and without him as a producer the lyrics have a similar vocabulary and pattern. Just wondering.
On this point, I would like to add that lyrics and music are not two distinct entities. The person who writes the lyrics is the one who actually comes up with the melody, over which he/she writes the lyrics. If he's a pianist/sheet music reader, he'll then make the final song on his own on the piano. If not, he'll get help from a pianist in composing the music of the bridges where a difficult chord change occurs. The latter is what Walter did to most Mariah songs like Hero, Anytime You Need A Friend, All I Want For Christmas. That is also the reason why Walter never wrote hit songs without Mariah, because he isn't an accomplished songwriter. Walter is definitely a marvellous producer. He's co produced oscar winning songs. Walter should be known more as a producer. Even he agrees on that.
