I never try to find out more about the song because I always thought Mariah Carrey did a cover on this song, when the truth is she is the one creating the song. Im dumb X,D
Mariah's biracial background plays into her musical style, the reason she's able to be uninhibited musically is because she doesn't mind mixing things up. Not to mention she has one of the most palpable voices in modern history. No one can ever say she does not sound beautiful. She's not acquired taste, she IS taste.
Another instrument that "All I Want For Christmas Is You" makes use of, is the electric bass guitar. This same instrument is also audible in Sepultura's 1989 hit "Inner Self". It's amazing how many genres Mariah Carey manages to blend with just one Christmas song.
Wow. Dang that’s amazing and honestly impressive how well you dug into this song like gosh I only liked it because of the beat and your over here talking about the nutcracker and famous singers, rock and roll, multi lined choruses, and the 60s and verse chorus form. Man. When they love you, they love you. Its about time Mariah’s songwriting genius is recognized. Instead of harping on how she sounds now vs the 90s. Appreciate this gem of a woman while she’s alive. Her musical influence in and out of Christmas is unparalleled. Never forget that all of her number one hits (19 as of December 2019) are SELF PENNED. Not everyone has that. Its not easy to get. 🐏🦋🎄
Artist may come and go, but mariah will remain as the pops megastar , she's an icon, a legendary artist, simply the Queen and no one can take that away from her..
In my opinion, part of the reason to the success of this song is that it was an honest yearning for both the unnamed person and for a good and happy Christmas upon which it is built. Of course it helps that Mariah and Walter had incredible working chemistry as is evident in Mariah's catalog. Additionally, Mariah has said time and again that she loves Christmas and early in life had a yearning for festive holidays due to a difficult childhood experience.
I must have first heard this in the 90s when it was released, but it was not till sometime this century that I discovered, to my surprise, how young it was. It sort of inveigled its way into my life and let me just assume that it was a much older song that Carey had successfully covered. Once I accepted the truth, I was so much more impressed with this song-writing effort. Part of its appeal for me is those soulful backing vocals. They are so memorable that, if you don't want to sing lead, you can just sing backing, and it makes shopping that bit more fun. :)
Financially speaking, she doesn't have to write another song because she makes soooo much off of this one. Thank you for sharing all the musical details/design behind this song.
*As you can see in the latest MV of this song even tho it's already modern, the music didn't feel old even tho it's already 25 years old. That's how the genius of that song has 😍*
Wow I've learnt a lot about music from this video and how genius it is to write a classic. I always questioned why this song caught on more than other current Christmas songs.
Honey it's Mariah! Her capabilities are limitless. She creates amazing songs and can sing literally everything. As the say, only sky is the limit for her.
not to be annoying but i think its also because of how christmas is way more of a commercial holiday than it used to be when they made all those christmas classics. a lot less people celebrate it too so the demographic isn't the same for a christmas song to chart well enough. this makes it even more amazing that mariah could do this
This is another reason why MUSIC SCHOOL is still important! All these new "music wizards" with laptops in their parents basement think they are "naturally talented" and haven't the smallest of clues as to how harmony, rhythm, and composition all work...much less ANY knowledge of music history. Music Education is not only still vital, it is the key to writing a timeless classic. Mariah and her team clearly had Music Education and as such climbed an impossible mountain and are now $72M richer because of it and 100 years from now we'll still be talking about this composition.
The thing is, AIWFCIY and Last Christmas are both classics. Its just that last christmas sounds very 80's because of the synth (?) while this song can be released today and still pass as new. Its sound is timeless. No reference to modern culture at the time, no heavy usage of prominent instruments back then, just pure sounds that can be attributed to christmas.
The "only" modern holiday classic? Tell that to all the retail employees who have to listen to "Last Christmas" and "Feliz Navidad" a million times a day!
I've always wondered this but the 90s were a more creative time. Still it's amazing that only one song reached this sort of level in 25 years. I remember the year this song came out. It was all over the radio in December 1994.
The whole album, "merry Christmas II you" is great. Maria's opera singer mother even sings a song. Critics were really nasty, but it's my favorite Christmas album. (And I don't own any other album of hers.)
I love MCII too, it's criminally underrated, but honestly critics were never kind to Mariah. Caution is the first time she received positive reviews, but that's expected when you surpass your time - it takes time for small minds to catch up.
André Griezmann make it make sense, How is Whams “Last Christmas” not a classic yet? It doesn’t need to be bigger than Carey’s song just to be considered a classic, by that logic there’s only 2 Christmas classics, because Mariah has the second best selling Christmas song ever. Whams song sold nearly 10m copies, it is covered on most Christmas albums, it’s played a lot on radio every December, Its an 80s song with hundreds of millions of UA-cam views, and It went top 10 in basically every country in 2019 except the US (Peak #11 in 2019). It went top 5 in nearly every country, charts ever year, it went #1 in many countries as well. Do you not know what a classic is? It doesn’t need to be more successful than Mariahs song to be considered a classic.
Mariah's producer Walter A. used Phil Spector as the blueprint. Every year Darlene Love sings her hits at Christmas time and when I heard Mariah's song I instantly thought about Darlene Love. Great video!
Also it makes no reference to modern culture at the time - that’s one thing that really dates songs

Well, not all her songs have transcended time. Think about it. How many of her songs have you heard on the radio in the last 2 years? I don’t know about you, but I have never heard many of her biggest hits like Dreamlover and One Sweet Day anywhere but on UA-cam in the last 6 years. Meanwhile, I have heard almost all of Nirvana’s hits on the radio at least twice in the last year and none of their songs were as successful as Mariah’s were.
Nah. More like just this one song. I can't remember hearing any of her other songs in the radio or anywhere else in the last few years.

Because Mariah is a MUSIC GENIUS gifted with extraordinary vocals. She had it all.

If we counted "Last Christmas" we'd have to count "Where Are You Christmas". Cute songs, but neither compares statistically to Careys in widespread use and of course downloads (neither of the other songs has hit 1 mill in downloads & Careys was at 3.5 mill last year).

That's because she wrote it in a 1960's songwriting style, it's why it sounds like an old classic.

Mariah's biracial background plays into her musical style, the reason she's able to be uninhibited musically is because she doesn't mind mixing things up. Not to mention she has one of the most palpable voices in modern history. No one can ever say she does not sound beautiful. She's not acquired taste, she IS taste.
I bet no one can beat her she is the unmatched legendary song writer and empress of all diva ....
Another instrument that "All I Want For Christmas Is You" makes use of, is the electric bass guitar. This same instrument is also audible in Sepultura's 1989 hit "Inner Self". It's amazing how many genres Mariah Carey manages to blend with just one Christmas song.
She is genius.. And very toughtful.. And her voice sound like an angel..

Amen and should have gotten Grammy nominated for Caution. The industry is a pure joke.🤭
She was in the 90's and 00's, that's fine
But she just go on by her spirit.

This makes even more iconic that se wrotte this. She IS a Genius.
Honey it's Mariah! Her capabilities are limitless. She creates amazing songs and can sing literally everything. As the say, only sky is the limit for her.
You've missed the most important factor.
Simply, there is so much joy in the song.
not to be annoying but i think its also because of how christmas is way more of a commercial holiday than it used to be when they made all those christmas classics. a lot less people celebrate it too so the demographic isn't the same for a christmas song to chart well enough. this makes it even more amazing that mariah could do this
This is another reason why MUSIC SCHOOL is still important!
Amen!
