Fast action December fly fishing at Utah's Deer Creek Reservoir

- I went up to Deer Creek reservoir after receiving a tip from one of my viewers that the bite was on. I went up there twice and experienced faster action than I typically do at ice off. I was using two different setups. On one rod I had a floating line with an indicator and the other a sink tip. It was constant action on both rods and just flat out fun. Unfortunately, I broke yet another rod 😒. That makes five broken rods for me this year which is a record. Anyway, for any of you that are local I would highly suggest you go wet a line at Deer Creek before it freezes over cause the fish are in the mood to eat!
Beautiful place, nice footage and great video, a few beauties landed, thanks and thumbs up,, Tony.
It was very cold, but it paid off. I got into a few nice ones.
😂that broken rod is too funny! I broke my helios3 rod there on Sunday doing the EXACT same thing !!!!!!!! I was fishing the point behind you at the end of the video.
Fishing was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Keep up the great vids!!
A broken Helios is a little more depressing than a broken Cabelas Vector hahaha. Maybe it was due to the temperature---who knows.
@@TroutHowler I’m 99% sure my nail knot got caught in my guide right before i yanked on it to land….probably my fault 🤦♂️
Fish were hitting nearly every cast!
@@iknowaguy3558 Yeah, it was fast action fun over the weekend. Broken rods are always a bummer
Noon. Another rod. So sorry... those were some well fed bows! Almost every one... hail to the micro blood leech!... fun video despite freezing temps...
It was fun minus the broken rod haha
That bent Trout was crazy looking. Another awesome adventure, thanks for letting us follow along.
I probably shouldn't have released it but if it does have whirling disease, it can't be the only one
Deer creek during the shoulder seasons is awesome. The rainbows put up such a good fight
There were several other people fishing fairly close to me. The word has gotten out. The bows weren't terribly long, but they were all healthy.
Everywhere you go you’re always catching fatties RIGHT ON!! your videos never disappoint!
I got into a few decent fish 👍
Thanks for the heads up! Gonna have to sneak up there while it’s open. I’m shocked another rod ate it, sorry man! We were just deciding what should be our first ice fishing trip this season.
That's strange. Your comment was the first one I responded to, but it didn't post I guess. You and Tessa should definitely hit it as soon as possible. I may try to hit it one last time as well
Great video - definitely a windy area. Broke two rods myself this year - one really old Sage rod, and 15 year old St Croix. I hope to avoid 5 in a year.... yikes
Two in one year was my previous record. Hopefully my new record will never come close to being beaten 😑
I know that feeling and sound of a rod breaking, broke my Hardy last week.😢
There was another guy fishing fairly close to me that broke his Orvis Helios that same day. It was a bad day for rods at Deer Creek.
@@TroutHowler I was on the MP, guides were iced up. Waiting to see what Hardy says about repairs??
@@larryelkington4639 I imagine Hardy has a good warranty. It's $50 to get a Scott rod repaired unless it's changed since last time I sent a rod for repairs.
@TroutHowler I paid $20 to ship it to Florida, they got it last Wednesday. They looked it over and sent it back with a new tip section on Friday. I had I back on Wednesday. One week turnaround. No charge, still under warranty they said. WOW, great service!!!
I think it is $75 when it’s out of warranty?
Going to start a gofundme for your broken rods haha
Soooo many broken rods haha
Dude.
5 FREAKING RODS?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Man that's nuts. You're not throwing Walmart specials either. $$$
Well I'm glad you at least kicked the crap out of the rainbows. I've been toying with a quick 15 minute drive to DC for the past couple of weeks. Looks like it wouldn't be a waste.
You should definitely hit before it freezes over. There were some guys just down from throwing lures and they were doing well too. Five broken rods haha 😣Not then greatest luck this year when it comes to rods.
Nice Job! looks like it was cold.
It was indeed cold. I did however get into a lot of fish so it was worth it.
That looks like it was a lot of fun. Too bad about your rod. I guess the silver lining here is that it is "Off season" get it sent in now so that you get it back before the ice is going the other way.
That's a valid point. That makes five broken rods for me this year. It's comically sad.
@@TroutHowler Yep. Sometimes all you can do is laugh.
Always great adventure videos! Just curious . . . did you have any difficulties with guides icing up? Thank you for sharing another successful trip!
Yeah, the guides were icing up pretty bad. Especially toward the end when the temp was dropping.
How does your approach change when fishing ice off and the water is really cold? Thanks.
Pretty much the same. You find fish in shallow water both in the spring and fall. The same patterns are effective with the exception of Chironomids which really shine in the spring. They work in the fall too, but after ice off is when they are golden
How did the term Howler become associated with fishing? I looked for a definition, but nothing turned up. When I howler, I think wolf. Is there a meaning I'm missing?
Mark Trout Howler is my brother. He has two passions that he is very good at. Fishing and coyote hunting. The howler part of his name comes from him being such a good caller for coyote. He videos both passions but only posts the fishing videos.
My brother explained it all haha
Hope you didn't break your Centric. I have the same rod. Great video! Way to brave the cold this time of year.
Fortunately, it was not my Centric. It was my 10 6wt Cabelas Vector that i bought as a back up. It was a bummer all the same.
Great pile of chunkers you rod killer. I really liked your orange powerbait fly.
It was super fun minus the broken rod. I only got one eat on the orange blob but it works great as an attractor
Beautiful videos bro. Beautiful lake Those trout are really charged they were sure nice.. 🎣👍
Thanks Mike. There are some healthy bows in there. I was having a lot of fun.
Dang! Awesome stuff! 👌 You might not break rods if you catch smaller fish.
Haha, it was probably due to the cold. It's been a bad luck year for me as far as rods go
Are there any browns in there??
Yeah, there are browns in there. The rainbow population is far greater though
Either you were catching the same stupid fish over and over, or they all had a dark mark on their heads.
I actually only caught one fish. I just edited it so it appeared like I caught many 😁
Which rods broke on you this year?
I broke a G Loomis GL3, Scott E2 904/4, Echo lago 10ft 5wt (twice) and a 10ft 6 wt Cabelas Vector
I need a counter on this video. How many times did you say Boobie?
They best named fly pattern of all time
lol These quotes of yours could be taken out of context. " This guy looked at my boobie ... and took it right on the surface" or "Lets see if this guy actually sticks on the boobie".
"Now all the action is on the boobie"
Hahaha, I didn't even notice. Its probably the best named fly pattern ever
