This is very educational
Thank you!
It's so interested and I appreciated. Thankyou.
How was the layer of green poly attached? Did you glue it? Just curious. Thank you great video
i went to a roofing store in Toronto to ask for green roof materials and the guy said thats rich mans roofing, no one can afford that stuff. hahahaha. that made me laugh cause he is right!
How much did you spend to do this roof?? I really need to know
Mari Hii cxx
Bummer he never responded to this. I'd also really love to know
50 year ,pay for it
@@ipeeinmysinkimafraidtocome7127 That's not an answer.
Honestly confused if the multiple layers of plastic and asphalt are really more environmentally friendly than just a single layer of asphalt shingles? How can they say asphalt is horrible for the environment and then go on to put a roll of it on this “eco-friendly” roof + tons of other manufactured products?
Had the exact same thought while watching this - I’d love to see a carbon footprint analysis done on this ...I hope the green roof wins that battle, but it’s hard to see if there’s that big of an environmental benefit vs asphalt (which can be recycled)
Because it's covered in green ssshhhh🤫
😅😂
In my opinion it's the overkill
Because they'll never pull the crap off to throw in a dump let alone every 5-10 years.
The problem, according to him, is the disposal of each batch of shingles and not the shingles per si….
nice video! i have a flat roof and i would like to make a part of it green .
do you have links for where to buy your materials from the list?
Thank you Norway for inventing the green roofs 1200 yrs ago.
Great video! I'm in the middle of building a home which I have a flat roof over the first floor, the top floor is the second floor and it's pitched. I'm looking at the flat roof and was thinking about a green roof. Are there any specific questions I should ask my structural engineer and builder to see how this can accomplished?
Ocean cleanup should partner with this company to use recovered plastic for at least some if these layers. How is this impacted by snowload?
So where does the excess overfill water run off
I can't help but notice the asphalt tiles you replaced are being replaced with so much plastic? I'm just wondering if there is really any environmental benefit? Green roofs are great in theory for their passive thermal and acoustic properties but with all that plastic I'm starting to wonder what the trade offs are?
Well, I would THINK (meaning I don't KNOW) that the plastic would be there for 50 years. Asphalt shingles need to be replaced every 20 years. It does seem to be the more sustainable solution at first blush; but this is my entree into the topic.
Another advantage would be a roof that converts CO2 to O2.
You spoke about the weight load of the trusses, but waht is the total weight per foot of all of those layers? taking into account the cups and the soil will hold water and some places get a lot of snow.
Usually 25-60 pounds/square foot for extensive and semi intensive types.
Will it catch fire in the dry season?
Well done!
How do you deal with the accumulation of dirt over time? As plants decay, more dirt is created from the excess carbon which would increase the weight of the roof over time.
I read the article on disadvantages to green roofs. I just want to leave two points. As far as homes in the States, make sure you have engineered for the additional weight and that the contractor knows how to correctly build a flat roof. P.S. They aren't actually flat. The last point is more and more insurance companies are doing drone surveys and cancelling your homeowners policy if they don't like what they see. So we as a community of green citizens need to make sure we are supporting legislation that keeps this from happening.
Like auto insurance, if you own free and clear and aren’t in an HOA area… you just take your own risk… I would experiment on a small shade structure, shed or a dog house, etc… before building a green roof on a larger house with any significant value… but I live in California so who knows what might happen when I get around to doing this on my little desert dwelling with five acres between me and one other house.
I liked the film. You are good explaining the steps etc. Too much material for me. I would like us to try more medieval methods. Some of us want to live cheap because we have no money ha ha.
This is cool, but I feel like you roof it twice and then cover with soil with grass on top
Wonder what all that mass does for temperature of the structure.
it might need enhanced framework as the soil is heavy? cost? only suitable for 2:12 roof? thanks
Great video is Tpo an option before the cup system?
Great Video! Thanks for sharing. Was just wondering where does the excess water go? And what drainage system did you use/could be used (single point drains, pipes etc.)? Thank you.
Hi Mohamed - the excess water goes to an eaves trough that fills a rainwater storage tank.
Just curious, won't all the plastic and other waterproofing materials underneath cause more environmental damage?
I'm also curious about this, especially since one of the layers is itself made of a roll of asphalt
Looking to build an earth berm home in western Pa. Any recommendations for architects? Thanks
An Update please.
update?
how would the water supply work in areas with infrequent rains?
How about if the roof is concrete?
What kind of primer do you use on the osb board?
So the total dead load of this roof is 100 pounds per SF?
Want this roof so bad.
How did you build the ridge along the edge of the roof?
can you put the site for the soil you used?
How do you think this type of roofing in the Southern Arizona desert would fair? I love it!
I think maybe a sedum roof would be better than a grass roof in Arizona, since sedum is a succulent. You can buy kits for sedum roofs online.
@@crankysister thanks!
Would red (Boston) ivy be wise to plant instead of grass?
So you have to mow your roof ? doesn't seem green at all . More materials then a regular roof
Or you could put a garden on it. Maybe some edible perennials. Yes, there's more materials initially, but the thermal mass that the earth provides and the greening of a space that wouldn't be green otherwise is the best choice.
It insulates, reducing energy costs & gives you usable space. Been roofing for 20 years & think it's a great alternative to conventional roofing.
Thanks Steve. In this case there is really no insulation value that it adds, there is a ventilated air space of about 6-8 inches underneath. There may be a minor amount of energy savings compared to other roofing materials, but not enough to write home about. Cheers.
We just sort of let it do its thing, admittedly it can get a little ragged looking but if you live in a home with limited outdoor space this would be a great addition to outdoor space and offer room for gardening. Something like this is a great addition to a downtown core, but in the woods it was more about the visual appeal since its lower than the road level and the first thing you see as you pull up. The house is on Air BNB, so all we really do is spend an hour or ever year pulling out tree saplings before they get too big.
Mike the fact that it doesn't heat up to a billion degrees in the sun should be considered.
I went on your website and i am curious about the small rocks around the green part of the roof if it has a function or just aesthetic.
In the beginning of the video he explained it's for expansion for when the soil freezes. @1:00
He said it serves as an expansion joint for freezing.
@@CriticalThinker27 Great- how did you determine how wide to make this expansion area?
How much did it cost?
Had to sell his soul
where can I find the Delta Floor?
Dirt? Dirt?!?! It's an insult to Soil!
lol
What's the overall weight in kg per sqm?
350 kg/sqm
@@morganhorori3105 351 kg/sqm
Hello, excellent video !! Just a question. do you not say in the video that you protect the water proof elastomer (resisto) with the black asphalt sheet all over the roof? I then see that you put the root barrier (green sheet 15mm) directly over the resisto and not the asphalt sheet. Cam you please explain??? thanks again!!
Nicolas Abouchaar It looks like the asphalt only goes around the edges where the rocks will go. Presumably you needed there because the rocks may allow you feel light pass-through if they shift a bunch.
I built an addition to my home with a low pitch and put a rubber roof on it with the idea later on of using it to expand my second story balcony around to. Now I'm really curious if I could make the space into a green roof instead as we decided to expand our back porch instead of expanding the balcony so I'm just stuck with an eyesore of a low pitch rubber roof. I live in Ohio. Is something like this a feasible option for where I live?
Heather Carter yes this is possible in Ohio! research or go visit Westcreek Watershed Stewardship Center in Parma. Their roof is pitched and they take on many other ways to deal with water. They’d be happy to help you out. Hope this helps!
Green house over this???
Planning to build a green roof on a non insulated low pitch roof (a machinery shed) using 2 layers of 45 mil epdm pond membrane ( got them for cheap) glued/fused to the structure, then find some alternative cup system for water retention if cheaper, with sod/moss as cover
Have you made any progress on this?
@@mpd9535 I'd like to know too.
Termina contaminando mucho mas !
Building science guy says a white roof is greener than a green roof because it reflects heat
How much?
That's a tough one to nail down Benj because we did it ourselves. To hire a company to do it for you would be pretty costly, but if you're handy at all there is really nothing too complicated about. As you can see in the steps of this video, you lay down three membranes then dirt. The dirt is the part I would do it differently - We got a conveyor belt and had wheel barrows on the roof, so it was ridiculously labour intensive. There are dirt pump trucks usually available, but not so much where we built unfortunately. In all I would say it cost in the range of a metal roof, so given that it will outlast many re-shingling jobs, I'm comfortable saying that in the long run it's 'cheaper' than the 'cheapest' option, certainly if you do it yourself. We planted a mix of wild flowers, clover and grass, that's a far cry cheaper than purchasing rolls of Sedum, but its not a look for everyone and it takes a bit more maintenance in pulling out tree saplings. This really isn't for everyone, but we had fun doing it and we wanted to showcase an alternative. Cheers, Mike
I feel all that extra stuff is unnecessary... I think I’ll just be good with boards, Polly and a foot of dirt.
No shingles but 20 lairs of manmade coverings to make it water proof and hold water. Lol
Graze the roof
The Vikings use lead roof under the grass.
Wow.. Just think how these NC weeds would love it up there! Yep🙄
گلدون بزارین بابا... خخخخ
Lol ash-phalt
Well this is not very Eco. Just a lot of plastic.
This is ridiculous. And probably a symptom of having access to too much money. It's interesting to watch the overly indulgent convince themselves that they being eco-friendly
very very very good it should be into construction law ,Isolation law ,construction code must be change ,if you want to combat climate change ,insulation on roof ,feeding population law ,
