Most of my shoots are multi camera shoots with OA 3, OA 4, OA 5 pro and pocket 3. Because there is such a HUGE difference between rendering the normal color modes on the new camera I need to start shooting D-Log M on all of my cameras. Every other DJI product before this has been rendering the scene very naturally in the normal profile but that has changed with the new release.
With D-Log both look great. As the OA5 standard profile is so overdone I need to revert to shooting in D-Log with all my cameras to get similar results with all my camera angles. Not a big deal but before the OA5pro I didn't need to do this as other DJI products look very good with the normal profile.
am i the only one who still likes the old rich dramatic yet truer to life look vis a vis the clean bright cartoon plastic world or high res game graphics look of the OA5pro? 😮😢
You are not alone 😁 Many people like the colorized hdr look. I just prefer the closer to real life look myself. I think this is a bit of trickery and marketing on DJI's part to go so hard with the effect.
OA4 doesn't need to be perfect to be more true to life compared to the new camera. Many reviewers also don't consider that a lot of people use the new and old camera in the same shoots. With the normal color profile this is not going to look very nice as the processing changes with camera angles SO MUCH. I need to start shooting in D-Log with all my dji cameras because the new one looks so different in the standard color profile.
Video quality out of the 3 is in many ways better than either one of the newest cameras. I prefer the normal mode colors on the 3 to even the 4 and definitely to the 5 pro. I still use my OA 3 on a weekly basis ✌️ Great camera but the wireless mic support has steered me to use the newer ones as my main camera.
A motovlogger here in Scotland and still on my OA3 as it stands. I really expected the 5 to blow me away , for what it has overall I may eventually get it or a 4 as I love the Osmo range , having had original and the 3. Time will tell. Thanks for this comparison. RSMF

I don’t think you can simply process it to match, especially super night mode. In testing the cameras now, and it’s pretty clear that the action 5 does beat out the 4 handily in low light, like easily, but there are some quirks.
The Osmo 5 night shots remind me of the tunings dashcams have been doing in the last few years. Same idea, they have the same sensor as before, but the newer cameras are pulling various tricks to increase edge detection, do better with colour picking and more. I would not be surprised if they have a tiny AI algo doing "sensor optimization".
Dji has a better battery, better night filming, doesn't over heat /crash .Active tracking, under water pressure, plus depth reading 20m without a case . Gopro is a dying company look at the stock market.
Yeah, same. Wanted to switch from 4 to 5, but dont want to anymore. 5 is sharper, but the image looks way overprocessed. And in log almost no difference. Gonna wait for 6 or 7.
Some shots are better on Action 4 some on Action 5. It's at tie in terms of image quality and looks. But battery life is much better in A5 and ability to connect 2 mics might be a winning factor. But upgrading from 4 ... not sure, unless someone needs 2 mics. I got 5 personally, but haven't got any action cameras.
@@PatchedBandit Yes, but most of the longer record time comes from better efficiency of the new camera elements. Probably mostly 4nm chips. Together with a new battery this gives a significant difference. Although it's not that A4 records for 30 minutes :D. But I haven't seen good deals on A4 adventure combo yet, just 10% off tops :(.
10% bigger battery is not nothing though but yes the new camera can be more power efficient too. Maybe partly also due to the new screen technology. Haven't seen a comparison on battery life with both cameras using the same bigger battery. Maybe I will try that later.
I have a feeling DJI did this on purpose, pentele...Just so when ppl review it they can say "old bad, new better" in low light. I guess they will patch this update later to be "Normal" -A5 is just software trickery mostly.

True and even at night kinda need to pixel peep to see an improvement. Very minor change from what I assume is the ISO boost and improved noise removal.

Great video, thank you! The supernight mode apparently brings back the noise reduction AND the sharpness setting, which I don't like, the exagerated edges dont look natural in my opinion. In the end I prefer the OA4 in most of the shots, even if we lose some highlights and shadows, overall it just looks more natural.
Well done comparison video my friend and really nice details in every shot. The micro jitter was horrible in some of the night shot, but we have to be honest, how much night time riding are we actually doing? After seeing this video and a bunch of other videos, my money is still on GoPro, but if DJI continues to push this much each year, I bet we see a really great camera in one or two generations. And that is good news for us as consumers. 👏🏻
In the winter time I do benefit from the low light performance but definitely most filming even I do on the daytime. Competition is always good 🙂 I felt compelled to do this video as I'm not buying the "dynamic range" talks without chewing first especially as the sensor is the same size on both 😁✌️ Thanks for taking the time to comment 🫡
Nice compare! And there is no way to tweak amount of the HDR effect in the normal color in the OA5? So bad and unnatural look, when HDR is boosted on "all money".
Yep I'm not in love with either at night to be frank. OA 4 shutter speed has always been a bit low at night mode and as you said it the OA 5 pro looks a bit weird too.
Thanks for this video, I'm a bit disappointed in the OA5 as well. The overly processed HDR fake look of the 5 is a big distraction for me. None of the other videos I've seen really mention this and just seem to talk about how good the OA5 is, which definitely makes them seem "sponsored." Hopefully DJI can fix the look of the 5 with a firmware update. Until then, thanks for saving me money! 👍🏻👍🏻
I hope they fix this later too. I've seen a LOT of sponsored videos and other thing is many reviewers just review the D-Log footage that is professionally graded for the reviews. I want to give the straight answer how the footage looks straight from camera as most of us motovloggers don't want to do anything fancy in the edit. Some people like the fake look but I'm not one of them.
Nice video. I can make my own bad HDR look in Davinci Resolve so I'll keep my DJI Action 4 haha. You can get an HDR look without making things look unnatural if you shoot in D-LOG M on both cameras.
All in all, the OA4 is the current winner among the DJI action cameras. What I don't like about either of them is the low bitrate, and when riding a motorbike it looks very bad at 25mph. If you compare a Hero12 or 13, the Heros look clearly better. The Osmos become very muddy because of the low bitrate.
Action 4 bitrate is a respectable 130 MBit/s but for some reason DJI dropped the new to about half that. One insane decision I hope they will fix on a later update too. Can't believe how hard this 5 pro ball has been dropped on launch. DJI has a lot of work to do.
Most of "normal" user will not buy each new generation of a cam. Normal user will only buy a new cam after a year, if user is not satisfied with actual cam. In this case user would buy a cam from a different brand.
Helmet audio is recorded with a lav mic connected to dji wireless mic 2. Mic is wirelessly connected to the action 5 pro. In my setup -12db gain works well but it depends on mic location and model.
Yeah, this has been my view of it too. Day time when you actually use these 4 looks better overall, 5 looks overprocessed and as a result, cheap. 4 definitely requires -0.5EV like most of the Gopros do not to burn the highlights. I love the way the LOG looks, hate their LUTs. Torille 👀

Usually returns are ok if the product can be packed nicely back in the box. Good thing is that DJI does fix a lot of issues with later firmware updates so a lot of these gripes I have might be fixed later. I'm not happy about my purchase either at the moment. They should also raise the bitrate to the same levels as action 4. Now the camera is handicapped with all this software nonsense.
@@PatchedBandit my first use out of the box was terrible as it would not upgrade to the latest firmware update so the footage was blurry and hunting for focus on the dark looked great on the screen but as soon as I downloaded footage was very disappointed. Firmware has been uploaded but it's still rubbish I don't want to mess about colour grading my original action is point and shoot. Think I will contact DJI customer service for a refund tomorrow . maybe it's because I prefer to shoot at 1080p and max out the battery life which is correct over 4 hours
10:03 the only thing that bothers me is the weird cone shape lens flare they produce from either the street lights or the sun on both the action 4 and 5.
Your eye notices completely different details than the eye of an ordinary viewer. But you are mostly or even totally correct. DJI made a big underestimation of the buyer there if they thought they can sell the camera because it makes so oversaturated picture! It has little bit better dynamics and it shows more details in the picture.
Yep. When they called this camera a "pro" product I assume pro results. I agree the colorized look is directed straight to the average consumer who will most likely prefer the artificial look of the normal profile. I just very much dislike that all the previous cameras are more natural and when I use all the cameras together I have to grade everything manually now 😅
I like that the 5 gets the shadowy parts better in the first few minutes. I can see more details there. I us my camera whre the fog light is on my bike and with that, the tyre is in the picture and it is rather dark there. With the 5 it would look bette then, but overall the picture of the 4 that I have looks better.
It's possible but the OA 4 footage starts to look quite muddy and detail is not at the same level if you try to do it in post processing. That's a very nice comparison! Did you also try what's the actual recording time impact between the old and new batteries? DJI says that it's more to hardware changes, than just the battery, but how much so?
I haven't tested the recording times. The old battery was 1770mAh and the new one is 1950mAh. I'm pretty sure most of it is due to the bigger battery. New 1950 batteries work with Osmo Action 4 too.

I’ve been using a friends GoPro hero 9blk because I was thinking about buying a go pro. However 20% of the time it bugs out and doesn’t save the video. Are these dji cameras more reliable than go pro?
Way more reliable. All my GoPros have done exactly what you said for years. I switched to DJI and have never had that issue again. I believe GoPro do look better but I’m willing to sacrifice that small amount of quality that most won’t notice for the reliability and endurance of the DJI OA’s
Haven't tried the newer insta cameras. Can you get the video file out straight by copy paste or do you need the insta app to export the files? I had some serious issues with my insta360 go 2 that I couldn't export some files and it was completely rendered useless for my use. I can't deal with unstable software as I film so much and some clips can't be repeated easily.
@@PatchedBandit I think so as well. Just finished your vid and yeah; I guess the nighttime shots will be a bit more detailed but it’s just an ugly image due to all of the software processing. Something I also dislike on phones. I use an ‘ancient’ GoPro 7 as a secondary camera and still have to use the flat profile in order to get the processed garbage out of the image. The small sensor is the problem. The pocket 3 really solved that issue though.
I haven't had an action camera since the GoPro 4 Session. Have been looking to jump back in and was decided on the Action 4 .....but then DJI released the 5 Pro and I jumped on that and made the purchase. Im very satisfied with the footage im getting out of this camera, that said I'm not a pixel peeper or have outlandish expectations for an action camera. Your side-by-side footge made the 5 Pro look better in most situations.
Most people have a taste for the colorized HDR look. I'm not one of them. I prefer the D-Log M on both and with the LOG mode there was basically no differences between the two. Both great cameras but I expect more than software tricks with the new release. Why I do the side to side videos is exactly this. Everyone can see for themselves what they prefer. Both are going to get used on this channel though. Even the action 3 is still in regular use.
@PatchedBandit a big mistake is the hype, in low light, I think that to get low light performance you need much more, they destroy basically the whole daily picture Insta 360 will go with two chips so as not to ruin the daily picture Because of the need for Somebody vlooging a night time, the action camera is destroyed, which should be improved in the direction of action😢 Greeting from 🇲🇰

Pocket 3 is waaay better in low light. Much bigger sensor and gimbal makes a world of difference.

True. In some situations 5 wins. But oa 4 produces a more cinematic look (in my opinion). But with d log m you can do that on both.

I haven't tested the recording times. The old battery was 1770mAh and the new one is 1950mAh. I'm pretty sure most of it is due to the bigger battery.
New 1950 batteries work with Osmo Action 4 too.
@@PatchedBandit That is exactly the question I was wondering. If one was to stick the new battery in to the old camera, how close would the recording time be to the new cameras recording time.
I’ve been using a friends GoPro hero 9blk because I was thinking about buying a go pro. However 20% of the time it bugs out and doesn’t save the video. Are these dji cameras more reliable than go pro?
Way more reliable. All my GoPros have done exactly what you said for years. I switched to DJI and have never had that issue again. I believe GoPro do look better but I’m willing to sacrifice that small amount of quality that most won’t notice for the reliability and endurance of the DJI OA’s
I use DJI because they are reliable.
HDR crap on the 5 the 4 is crap to as much noise in the low light best action camera is the acepro AV see whot the ace pro 2 brings....
Haven't tried the newer insta cameras. Can you get the video file out straight by copy paste or do you need the insta app to export the files?
I had some serious issues with my insta360 go 2 that I couldn't export some files and it was completely rendered useless for my use.
I can't deal with unstable software as I film so much and some clips can't be repeated easily.
@@PatchedBandit file transfers was easier on the acepro DJI talk time it all depends on what camera you prefer mate DJI sill ok camera...
I use a card reader with all my cameras. Old school but it works every time 🙂

@@PatchedBandit I think so as well. Just finished your vid and yeah; I guess the nighttime shots will be a bit more detailed but it’s just an ugly image due to all of the software processing. Something I also dislike on phones. I use an ‘ancient’ GoPro 7 as a secondary camera and still have to use the flat profile in order to get the processed garbage out of the image. The small sensor is the problem. The pocket 3 really solved that issue though.
Pocket is absolutely amazing. I use it a lot but it just doesn't work in my more roudy activities :)

Τhe new action pro 5 shows the footage with gitter,it needs a new firmwear to fix this.
This and low bitrate compare do action 4 and the ridiculous normal color profile. DJI needs to go to work.

I haven't had an action camera since the GoPro 4 Session. Have been looking to jump back in and was decided on the Action 4 .....but then DJI released the 5 Pro and I jumped on that and made the purchase.
Im very satisfied with the footage im getting out of this camera, that said I'm not a pixel peeper or have outlandish expectations for an action camera.
Your side-by-side footge made the 5 Pro look better in most situations.
Most people have a taste for the colorized HDR look. I'm not one of them. I prefer the D-Log M on both and with the LOG mode there was basically no differences between the two.
Both great cameras but I expect more than software tricks with the new release.
Why I do the side to side videos is exactly this. Everyone can see for themselves what they prefer. Both are going to get used on this channel though. Even the action 3 is still in regular use.

I think that to get low light performance you need much more, they destroy basically the whole daily picture
Insta 360 will go with two chips so as not to ruin the daily picture
Because of the need for Somebody vlooging a night time, the action camera is destroyed,
which should be improved in the direction of action😢
