The need for a “reservation” to hike in a public-supported state park is so stupendously insane. MHO. I’ve never encountered that in any of the 33 states I’ve visited.

As a native Texan I can tell you that our state parks can get insanely busy and crowded at times. As such, park service tries to make it a more pleasurable experience for visitors by using a reservation system. Personally, I applaud them for this. And very much appreciate it!

Texas State Parks has a good phone app. It is very helpful. The reason they require a reservation is there are too many people. We sat in line once and barely eked in then wished we hadn't, wall to wall people, it was like a shopping mall. Spring Break, Easter, June, some popular parks reserve months in advance. Texas is also losing a State Park up by Dallas. The owners of the property are not re-leasing it to the state. The need for more Texas State Parks is great, many lakes are private, many wilderness areas are now developed. Safe travels.

Colorado Bend is a gorgeous park. The long gravel road entering is a pain, especially when you have bikes in the open bed of your truck...that was fun.
Trivia: When Elvis Presley was stationed in the Army, he would hang out in nearby Lampassas. Storms Drive in was a regular hang out. It's still there and if you crave a burger and shake, that's the place to go!

In California during Covid they shut down all the parks - city, county, state, beaches. At one point Yosemite was open and they got flooded with people. They didn’t have many people working, so no one was collecting the trash. People would just dump their trash beside the overflowing dumpsters! Then they started a reservation for just entering the park 😕.

I think I was camping there the same day y'all went for a visit...because I was there during time change. When you mentioned the showers, I about died laughing...they do have a 'shower' but it is a faucet of freezing cold water right off the parking lot in the grass, no walls/doors nothing. I drove around same as y'all trying to find this mythical shower.
Next time, definitely take the trail to spicewood springs, it's short, less rocky and fun! Also, you can swim in this springs.
Also, the TX state park day pass is no joke, since covid the parks fill up super fast and they turn down people at lots of the parks, especially on weekends due to park full.

Texas state parks can potentially get overwhelmingly busy! That would make for a miserable experience for everyone! I applaud the reservation system.

You could always take a shower at a truck stop (if your desperate). Also you can get a gym membership and shower. Great video!

Our family has camped in our state parks many times. We always made reservations for the camping. But not once in my life have we been told we couldn't get in for just the day. I'm ashamed of my state. Going to be sending Governor Greg Abbott a letter on this. It makes me mad. I hope you had a great time but I'm now disgusted with my state.

Yeah, whenever covid happened the state parks in texas got so busy and crowded that they started doing reservation only for EVERYTHING, even hiking. Which is ridiculous, makes me sad that texas is getting so crowded now😢

YA... NOT A FAN OF TEXAS AT ALL... TOLL ROADS EVERYWHERE, DID YOU KNOW THE TAXES ON A HOME IN TEXAS IS 2.3%? THATS MAKES 300K HOME VALUE $5000 A YEAR, UTTERLY REDICULOUS, THATS LIKE CALIFORNIA OR WORSE. MY TAXES IN IDAHO ON MY 1/2 ACRE ARE $98 BUKS. NOW THEY WANT RESERVATIONS FOR A STATE PARK?? BOOKED FOR ALMOST THE REST OF THE YEAR? THEY CAN KEEP THAT STATE. I COULD SEE THE LOOK ON YUR FACES... I WAS SHOCKED. I LIVED IN CALI FOR 50+ YEARS AND NEVER WENT TO YOSEMITE... FOR THE EXACT SAME REASON... MONEY MONEY... TOO MANY TOURISTS. I KNOW IM RANTING, BUT THE POINT IM MAKING IS ITS JUST BECOME A SHAME THE WAY THINGS ARE NOW. I AVOID ALL THAT, GO WHERE ITS NOT REGULATED AND CONTROLLED LIKE THAT. I WENT TO YELLOWSTONE IN MAY OF 2022, AND IT WAS SO NICE AND LIGHT TRAFFIC, NO RESERVATIONS, EASY FREE DISPURSED CAMPING A FEW MILES AWAY... THAT KINDA STUFF IS WHAT IVE RESORTED TO. I FELT BAD FOR YA ALL..... AND I KNOW IT TURNED OUT O.K..... IM JUS SAYIN.

Guadalupe state park didn’t require a reservation when I went in February. Was it on a weekend? I think if you go on a weekday it’s ok.
