On Killing. Read that book back in 03. Very eye opening because it discusses that there is more than just a fight/flight response. There's posturing, freezing and submission. It also discusses how militaries have created different ways to make it easier for soldiers to kill by conditioning them through things like video games. Very good read.

Thank you professor. I've read Mr Miller's Meditations on Violence, and I've read excerpts of Lt Col Grossman's book, but your recommendation pushed me to get Mr Miller's second book and Lt Col Grossman's book too. Thank goodness for Kindle!

Great video sir. Personally I really like 'The gift of fear' and 'Protecting the gift' by Gavin de Becker as well as 'The kidpower book for caring adults' by Irene van der Zande.

I agree about de Becker's books. I have not read the book by van der Zande and will do it. Thank you!

@@welcomematstevescott Im very happy to have let you know about that book. It's also big enough to be physically used for self defense:)

Thanks Mr. Scott. I've never seen you but I've learnt a lot from you. I'm anxious to read the first one, On Killing. Inasmuch as you're most eminent sensei I know of, I impinge on your time to ask a question: setting aside escaping rear choke, is there any self-defense situation that flying mare or Ippon-seoi-nage could be useful? I can't conceive of any real violence scenario that this waza be the best bet. To buttress my argument, I quote from The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu page 101: "... the trick known to American wrestlers as the flying mare. This flying mare is worthless as a jiu-jitsu trick. The Japanese employ it only as a ruse." Yours truly, Mohamamd

I tend to agree that Ippon Seoi Nage (the flying mare) is not the most practical throwing technique to use in self-defense. My preference is O Soto Gari as it is not hard for students to learn and retain rudimentary skill in that could be sufficient for self-defense. However, most any throwing technique can be devastating to an assailant. I recently saw a video from Russia where a man used Kata Guruma to throw an attacker to the ground.

@@welcomematstevescott Ippon seionage is a good throw if your being attacked from the rear, a colleague of mine threw an offender through a glass coffee table in a lounge many years ago....end of fight plain and simple......i prefer o soto gari, o soto garuma, reverse hip, and reverse body drop throws for the simple reason my back is not turned to the offender so im in a far safer position tactically, its much harder for the offender to grab hold of me or use some form of weapon....ive used these throws in real life situations....very effective on the tarmac tatami.....thanks for posting this information steve, best regards, Stefano.

Let me say I’ve known Scott Sensei for some time. We are Sensei in Shingitai Jujutsu together. In that circle I’m kinda known as the self defense guy. Scott Sensei is dead on correct here. Ignore his advice at your peril. The only thing I would add is watch John Wayne’s final movie, the shootist. He should have gotten an Oscar for that but his politics prevented that. Listen to Steve and pay attention.
