Emily Artful if I were able to text you I would just want to talk to you cos you have got one of the best personalities I’ve ever seen #anactualcoolmom
@@jesbrown3 I left a link down below so people can donate and I also donated to the United Way to help people like your Dad. Not about to make a joke at someone else's expense without trying to be helpful.
Emily Artful. I’m an artist, but my friends that I’m less close with were asking me at school today asking for art. I only did free art for my sisters and family. Also a free one for my best friend but they just were like, “this girl works like 3 hours on this art plus it’s using expensive supplies and have homework on top of a busy schedule, I’ll take one” and think they could get it for free. I was being very generous when I said they could get a drawing for $6. But no. They wanted it for free. Totally understand how you feel.
Same! Mine was like 1600$!! including the apple pencil! :( (Im a digital artist Lol) Its sad honestly. Obviously you'd need to pay for the time and effort!
It’s just the entitlement really gets to me with those people. We are putting in labor. Supplies and time aren’t free! Just because they don’t think our time and skill are worth it, we do! If you are an artist don’t sell yourself short dude! Triggers me so hard, rant over!
Sadly not and my parents even hired a tutor for idiosyncrasy, sports, instruments, and many more like I dont know what's all the tutors for but I actually appreciate it
@@ivymolit4217 I hadn't even thought about that. I'm only 16 so 150 or whatever for art seems a lot to me, like I wouldn't buy it. But it's definitely worth that much
Sofia Malik awww I've had something similar!! I had a pencil piece I drew of my moms friends cat... It took me definitely almost a month and she payed me $35, I it was her cat in the Grass... The grass still gives me flashbacks. Mind you she made some good money with the several Little jobs she did, she bought everyone she worked with gifts all the time.
And even so, I had a friend who was a hairdresser, I used to trade her DIY stuff. I'd come round and fix her curtain rail etc and I'd get a haircut. I actually thought that a 100 quid tattoo design was a bargain against a plain haircut!
Right? a trade doesn't cost her anything. both take time and skill. But art uses up supplies too. And a full color dragon? oh my so simple you can just whip it out in no time
@@myagsr5355 i think they were being sarcastic at least i hope so as id never let a stranger use my white nights watercolors that i got with MY OWN MONEY
Yup the world can be cruel this one time my mom lates down my baby sister on the couch and my sisters friend barged in the house and decided to jump on the couch moving it and making my baby sister cry. When we told her to leave she said “Ugh! You’re family is so mean! I only came to watch TV and have some chips!”
@@teacuptea9155 yeah these kind of people really don't realize anything of what they're doing and how it affects others and the Environment around them, they only care about themselves and how they feel
"art is a natural born talent" No. Just no. I draw and I've been through so much stress to improve my art and I'm still improving. I hate it when people say "you're so lucky to have this talent"
@@orcadork8091 no, I draw with pen and paper but with some of the digital ones, I use apps to make them. But thank you! I really wish the digital art I found has watermarks so I can credit the artist properly
God, I can’t believe artists react like this whenever someone ask them to draw them something for free. It’s honestly ridiculous. *yall are way too nice I’d be wayyyy more aggressive lol*
@@chocolatecake8274 ah yes, can she feed herself if she gives away art for free? Do us a favor and put yourself in an artist's perspective instead of dismissing art as a hobby and not a job.
That's the point right? Like that guy had not even a slight idea how much work drawing is and can be. That drawing is not magically dragging your hand with a pencil over the paper and immeadiately drawing everything perfectly from zero to hero in 10 seconds. It's sad and frustrating honestly. At least imo
Art 👏 is 👏 not 👏 a 👏 natural 👏 talent 👏 you 👏 have 👏 to👏 learn 👏 how 👏 to 👏 do 👏 it 👏 and 👏 do👏 it 👏 right EDIT: I'm getting a lot of replies from people saying that they ae naturally good at art and don't need to practise. I'm not doubting that you're good at art, but be careful with your words as it can come off as conceited. I'm sure you don't mean it that way, but it's not a good look. I'm not saying everyone needs a professional art teacher, I'm saying no artist is as good as they are without hard work. By saying that they were born with it can actually be dismissive of all the years of practise they've put into it.
It CAN be natural, but it's extremely rare having that kind of talent without any prior experience. In all seriousness, pretty much anyone can be an artist if they dedicate the time to practice multiple times a week, if not daily.
Uhm. Some People have the talent for art. Of course you have to practise, and learn new techniques but, it's not a born talent lol. Some people just get art quicker than others.
I did a painting, posted it and my friend said “I could use this in my life”. I said it took me 8hrs to paint. She really thought I was going to give it to her. And still guilt trips me. 🤦🏻♀️ I get it.
Coleyq ugh I hate that, I’m like uhhhh haha my 12 hours, canvas, brushes, paints, and back ache are not free. Neither is the house i live in so thanks but no thanks 🤘🏼 I’ll just keep it lmao
And then these kind of people go on to act as if slaving away at an office is the more “valid” and “pay-deserved” than spending time on a creative work XD
i really don’t understand this theory in people’s head. ‘oh it took then 8 hours of breaking their back intently working on putting their mental image on paper until perfection? eh they won’t mind if i take it’. YES I WILL. art is hard, i didn’t wake up one day and boom was Leonardo Da Vinci.
I'm so sorry about that situation, I think I could give my art for free if it's to members of my dad's side of the family that I trust, my mom and my older sister. Certain coworkers of mine, and that's it.
Nameless I personally don’t give my friends and family free art (unless it’s a gift) or even discounts because it’ll get me a lot of fake friends, however I am more likely to accept art trades from my friends than my clients. I’m not judging your rule of thumb here, I’m just giving mine.
@Nameless You have a big heart:) that's only good. Me as an artist, often don't have time or money for that. It can also depend on, what you make, how much money you use to make it - or how much time. I live from art - but with that being said, i (almost of cause) don't make a lot at all. I can't "just" give a canvas, one and a half meter long, to some friends. But maybe one day, i have the money, and the time:)
@@takolukaa ok so when I was like 4 I’d play with this other girl in the neighborhood and she taught me to draw hands like a circle and add like 50 fingers which were like lines 💀💀
The hair stylist one really pissed me off. I'm a stylist and I love the barter system! If I could get an amazing half sleeve design for coloring hair I would have snatched that in a heart beat!!!
"What if I paid you?" Wow, that's a really good idea! I mean, it's a shock that nobody's ever thought of this before! This could revolutionize the world of artistic commissions! Someone give this guy a cookie.
Art supplies cost a lot, making the art takes a lot of time, there is so much thought process that goes on behind it, it takes days and days of agonizing work, drafted sketches, mistakes and erases. So no, it's not as easy as these delusional locals make it seem. It takes a lot more than paper and a pencil. I can't with some people. The nerve. The audacity. Okay, now I'm just going off.
I hate people that say people’s art prices are over priced. They rly don’t understand how hard and long it takes for a piece of art to rly come together. And I think your prices are actually super reasonable!
ArtsyHamster and the amount of time and money invested in learning how to harness her talent (all artists talents.) It’s insane the entitlement of some people.
I heard this joke a while ago: Artist:"That'll be $40" Client: "What? You did that in 30 minutes!" Artist: "That's because it took me 15 years for me to learn how to do that in 30 minutes"
I live in Slovakia, and you now I work hard but even with that, my mothly payment is 410 dollars. After paying every ckecks and groceries remains 100 dollars. So yes, for some of us this is overpriced.
artist is a job too, idk why people treat it like a hobby or something. edit: some of you are saying "it can be a hobby too" or something like that. i meant this comment in her case, not in general.
Im so suprised, everyone i know who cuts hair is always willing to do it for free, dont worry i always pay in some way its just so surprising how intitled some can be
OML you have no idea how relatable this is. i am an artist and EVERYONE in my family asks for these HUGE art pieces that will take MONTHS and then expect me to give it to them for free and want it like two days after they ask. I am sending this to my ENTIRE family
Seriously, that last exchange is so unbelievable. It probably takes even more time than a haircut to design a tattoo, but even without that, her logic of “i went to school for that and i go to work and have clients (and you could do that stuff without going to school)” is just crazy. Out of all things, cutting hair is something people do at home all the time without formal training.
My Mum does hair. She does family free and that’s such a good trade. My Mum would’ve offered more on top of just a hair cut. The last girl is unbelievable
If she’s a good student then you wouldn’t mind BUYING her some art. Parents think it’s reasonable enough to give a kids $100 for all As on a report card. Shit costs money
things that annoy me in art: 1.people staring over your shoulder 2.people saying they suck at art and they make you feel bad 3.people asking for drawings 4.people looking in your sketch book/folder WITHOUT permission 5. (credit to Just Ianah2) when they ask where the bodyparts are while your CLEARLY still drawing 6. people saying "your rude" for saying no to giving drawings I hope in not the only one with these problems

Eubones WHAT? That is just straight up dumb at that point. You can’t just ask for something and then make them pay for what they did! I feel bad for you

@@futuristiccat5636 I've had people who's asked me for my films in my old photography class before and it was frustrating. It was exhausting trying to help...I regret doing so but I didn't want to give up on photography tho so I did the work anyway...just...not for them...
I think there are a few common reasons why people beg for free art: -They don't see the value in it because it doesn't serve a functional purpose -They expect you to be able to make something in 5 minutes: they have no understanding about the creative process -They think of drawing as a hobby and something for "fun" rather than an occupation (and then get surprised when you're earning money/a living from it, and that other people are actually willing to pay for what your art is worth) -They think of drawing ability as a gift (and it's your duty to share it with others) rather than an actual skill we've had to work hard on and spend a lot of time on to develop -They think that by asking for free art they're showing appreciation to the artist, or because they're a "big fan" they deserve it in some way Somehow though I've only encountered a couple choosing beggars so far asking for free art. Rather than being asked for free art though I tend to get asked for free private tutelage from randos. I reckon demographics plays a huge role!
I get so annoyed when people say that I was born naturally with the ability to draw and I'm just like no it's called practice and whenever I try giving advice to my friends and I say practice and they get annoyed and I'm like what do you expect me to say
I was about to post something similar. People just think something that they think is a leisure activity should be done for free.. Coloring, drawing, painting is very often seen as a leisure activity.. Not something you do as a job or "not a REAL job." because if you are not dealing with the mundane 9-5 garbage, having to get up at a particular time and sleep at a particular time, forcing your self to do something you hate like they do, it's not a real job. Real job also sometimes requires you to suffer in some way on a physical level.. Croggo Doggo The talent is actually in patience i think rather than the art its self. Some people yes do learn the skill quite quickly to where it seems like just a natural thing though. When I talk to people about art and they go I wish I could do what you do I just laugh and am like I am not even that good you can probably get to my level pretty easily if you just took the time to do it. After a bit of time and after I am just like I have books n stuff and my old art college papers somewhere you can look through... the thing I end up hearing the most is.. eehh I don't have the patience for something like that. So at the end of the day its patience that people don't have.
@@eller9464 Yes it is. But choosing beggars often state that "it's not that complicated" if it was true they could draw it themselves, but they won't be able to do it. Hence no it IS complicated. But until they try, they won't know.

I’m in an art school majoring in visual arts. I’m still getting people asking me to draw them stuff for free. I’ve done commissions for a few of my close friends. But they pay me by helping me with school stuff (cause I have some classes I struggle with). But they ask it on Very rare occasion. The kids in my class ask ALL THE TIME (before quarantine). And it sucks, they say sh!t like “oh come on it can’t be THAT hard to draw, and I’m just like “if it not hard to draw, draw it yourself” and they look at me as if I asked them to eat a live frog. I swear I thought art school would have less of that type of people. Nope Stay safe and have a wonderful day/night Edit: Imma tell you guys something my mom told me. Charge family and friends more, cause they’re gonna be a pain in the butt and act like it’s fine cause you’re friends or family...

I hate when people say this. They believe that doing art is easy when it’s actually not.It took me 2 years to learn how to draw and I’m still learning to this very day
What's worse is PR people from companies and businesses ask me for free art work. They offer "exposure" and "reputation" for being associated with such a great company. After listening to everything they have to say, I tell them unfortunately my local grocery store does not accept "reputation" in exchange for groceries. If you know of a grocery store that will accept your reputation, please let me know. At this point, there's usually a long, long silence. I break the silence with "oh my, I need go grocery shopping to feed my family." That usually gets the message across. The really serious ones will call back with an offer.
That was me once. When I was in fifth grade, I just sat there at my desk, drawing cutsy pie cartoonish girls, minding my own business when my friends, showed up and asked me if I could draw those doodles for them. I was way too nice so I said yes.
I knit and crochet. A friend of mine asked to make her FOUR blankets by the end of the week.... and she expected it to be free... I saw that as an insult
Yeeahhh they are stupid right!!! I hate them!just wtf u just ask?!And because i dont want to hurt them,i have to draw their stupid faces! They even complain!and when they complain i said"Its not my fault that u are ugly." Damn i am satisfied😎
This reminded me once that I was having a conversation with my dad about this (hes an engineer and makes software and all that jazz) and he told me that he has the same problem with people, thinking that their job is easy or they dont see the job the time spent on this, so they think they shouldn't pay him.
Artist: *pays for supplies* *takes days to make art perfect* People: “WhY sHoUlD I PaY??” This is the reason why I’m going to pursue theater arts instead of actual art.
My teacher asked me if i could draw something for the class and i told her that i was busy with other drawings and ideal and then she said this "you could just finish the art in an hour. Its really simple." *TRIGGERED*
My teacher asked me that too and I was like no, because if I liked the drawing I would probably keep it at home and never give it away. So I just said: "no, I can't".
I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm sad by the circumstances and situation I found you through, but I feel super connected to you. I feel like we see the world very similarly. @@sebart9321 Yeah... I don't know what "easier" shall be. Oil, Gouache, Acryl, Pastell, Charcoal, Digital... Watercolor is better for quick sketches, oil on the opposite. (First dries nearly intsantly, second 10 Months was literally printed on the package of some of my oils lolz) And acryl and Gouache in-between. I think watercolors are actually most beginner friendly. But all kinda equally hard for advanced. Is all about the knowledge less about the tools. Also I really hate when people call digital easier... I think it is actually relatively hard to learn. The programs and to use a graphic tablet. My first digital drawings where faaaar worst compared to my first acryl, oil , watercolor and so on paintings.
Art Ardere, it is! I’m a digital artist myself and it is terribly hard! But, to most, a physical canvas to be hung on the wall is more valuable than a digital copy of that same drawing. Thank you for your concern, however! :) I hope you have a really really nice day!!

It's so true ! I Don't understand why, when you create artistic things, all people around are like : "hey it's so beautiful, can you make me one please ? (for free of course)". They seem to think that artist make art like we are breathing, they can't understand that it can take hours and hours of work to make some pieces… And they Don't accept went we say that we are not working for free ! I've never hear that : "hey, you're building houses !? That's so great, can you make me one for free !?" ps: sorry for my bad English
As an editor, I get this all the time. "Hey, can you edit my book? I just finished it a few minutes ago. It's 50 billion words and the first thing I've ever written ever but it's going to sell more than Stephen King's books!" "Sure, here's my prices and payment plans." "Prices?! Can't you do it for free?" "No, sorry, it's my full-time job and I have bills." This is a bit exaggerated, but I get asked this or at least to lower my prices 'just this once' all the time, usually by people not from the USA. I get the exchange rate is high in your country but that doesn't change the fact my rent is still the same price. Obviously I'm happy to accept installments, but some people just don't quit.
Wow, I didn't realize this happened for editors lol... I guess half the population has that unfinished novel in their bottom drawer... I'm doing the first edit for my son-in-law, simply to help... I can't imagine doing that for free on a for real 'I went to school for this' edit... I just have decent grammar and spelling skills :D (not evidenced by my internet posting lol)
If someone asked me to make free art here’s what I would say “ok so you would like me to use my $40 watercolor or $200 copics or some other art supplies at least $40. $20 dollar watercolor paper or normal paper. $20 good paint brushes. 5 or more hours out of my day(worth at least $30) Skip all my other customers. And you want me to do that all for free, yeah I would TOTALLY love to waste all that on non paying customer.”
No persons art should be free, unless they personally give it to you. They created it, and it’s their hard work. People need to stop asking for free art.
Not only do people get mad about not getting art for free, they also get mad when they bring you an idea (usually a tattoo) that has NOTHING to do with your style, they just hit you up because you're the only artist they know and they don't have the decency to pay a professional tattoo artist to design it. Then they get upset when you refuse! Bothers me so much. (Love this drawing by the way and thank you for making a video on this topic ❤)
THIS! Whenever people ask me to draw their tattoo I tell them they should find a tattoo artist who can both design it and tattoo it, because if they can't design it in their own way, a tattoo of someone else's work is just going to look terrible...
YES! My cousin recently asked me to design a giant hideous back tattoo monstrosity for him that is not anything close to my style or what I'm interested in drawing. Like dude no I'm not doing that so you can weasel out of paying the tattoo artist who would do a better job than me anyway since what you're asking for is not my style at all. It's like people think if you draw you have a magic ability to pull anything out of your butt in 4 seconds because they watched a video where a guy banged out a drawing in a minute without understanding that guy probably practiced drawing that specific thing hundreds if not thousands of times to be able to do that. I also love when people send you another artists work and ask if you can copy it for them because they're to cheap to buy a print and want you to do it for free, or way cheaper ,um no I'm absolutely not doing that if you can't afford that artists price you can't have that artists work! Welcome to real life where you can't have everything you want regardless of whether or not you can afford it.
Yes!! My goodness ive been asked by a friend on multiple occasions if i could design her a watercolour tattoo. I didnt even own watercolours at the time and had next to zero experience with it. It honestly is like you said, your the only artist they know and assume you can crap out anything they want for free.
Mm-hmm. Last month a facebook friend from high school who I haven't seen in over 20 years asked me to draw or paint a pet portrait for a Valentine's gift for his wife. I am a cut paper artist. I refused multiple times & referred him to a friend who makes her living on pet portrait commissions. He told me he was "disappointed." Lol.
Ariana Luz Looks like she wanted to take advantage or really was very dumb... I don’t know which is worse :p. A dermatologist once wanted to make a trade with me, art for treatments , but I haven’t had the time, but it was a good trade.
Hi! The thing is, art is not a necessity, as food or mobilization (or others), so it's why people can't connect the right screws with it. "I can live without it, so, why should i pay?" They madly want it, but as they sense they don't should pay for it is what put them so angry. More when they have 0 connection with art (music, books, dance or related) because they have 0 clue of how it's done, the work, the effort, the struggle behind, they just see others making it, because they were born natural artists and dancers, like we got a gene they just don't have, so, it's like we owe them our art. I'm an artist (illustrations and a writer) so i got this picky attacks in both flanks. "You write so much, what a talented person you are", man, i quit parties and vacations and go out days at school just to improve my writing, but, nah, i'm just natural born. =v=
maybe, but you can live "jokes aside" with out coffee but have you seen the price of some of the coffee machines or some coffee? Who NEEDS coffee so bad to pay $50usd a cup for coffee that was partially digested by an elephant? but It sells.
@midorigale I understand what you're saying, but I don't think that's why. You can live without a television, but no one would go into a place & try to talk someone in to granting them a free, tricked out, large screen television. Sadly, I don't think there really IS a reason, with the majority of people. Other than, "I like it! I want it! I'm entitled to it!" mentality of SO many people. :( They feel that they're; well that they're THEM, so the rules of conduct & appropriate human interactions shouldn't apply to them. They're equivalent to the people on freeways & streets who try to cut corners with traffic regulations, cause "those rules are for everyone ELSE, not for ME!" The Church Lady would say, "Well. Isn't that special."
Literally everything is art. Someone designs everything we interact with it. But when a person sees that you draw they think it’s too easy to pay for. So they think they deserve it for free.
@@TheCrescentLune ha, i lost my post. Anyways, TV is a tangible thing that almost everyone had in their home (if not, a PC, a tablet a touch cellphone), a picture is a tangible form of art, but, most of us what have? prints, posters and copies (and our childhood drawings hanging on the walls) The relationship was different. Is more going to an Opera than a cinema thing, both are entertainment, last the same (almost) but the coast reflects the production. Mass production is cheap because it recover over time. A commission is not mass production, is one time thing that us as authors can't have more income that one only payment. The reason is ignorance, avarice, selfishness. Most of the angry people is ignorant, and discover their idea was wrong is painful and no one likes to feel pain, right? Also, cultural sphere is a big influence and how the culture of a country sees work retribution (in mine, sucks for anyone, even engineers, teachers, doctors, pfffff so is common our relatives step over us)
It is easier to see drawing as worthless compared to tattooing. Just because the later seems more complex with that machines whatever. But it's "just" drawing on skin. Nobody would walk in a tattoo studio and ask for a free tattoo. But paid drawings? "OMG what an asshole." Still think she is quite bad (not terrible) but the video was well made and I liked the topic.
I mean, some people have friends/family that would do free tattoos so maybe the person just thought that since the tattoo was free the art for it should be too? Very unlikely chance but I like to keep hope.
I get it she said that so people would stop being rude and asking her for free art but I honestly felt really sad I felt like she was being pretty rude to the parents and me during all this video
Julie Cortez Dear if you do ur own artworks u'll find that she has pretty good temper... For me I’d totally blacklist them with fury and screenshot the conversations to warn people don’t piss me off like that. I feel sorry if that offend u.
Hey I'm sorry you have a point art is hard its a talent I should get where she is coming from it's just kinda hard for me to get it I'm not really talented at anything to make people want me to give it for free I'm sorry I should have written me comment more clearly
Julie Cortez Hey easy dear, I don’t mean to blame u, u r cute😘. Just it’s human nature that people don’t like others to ask without pay. For those who helped me and who r really in need I do like to help them for free, that’s a healthy relationship.
This is what gets me (I know you're a teacher but still), is that musicians put in all this time and effort into creating a song and literally their product is worth LESS THAN A DOLLAR like just let that sink in
They never expect to pay someone who is not famous! They want free art but pay for a CD as both of them are all take time and efforts? It’s just so weird to me!
Everyone thinks making art is fun so you should do it free! And it is fun, but its also time consuming and makes your back, neck, hands, muscles, eyes and everything hurt.
I made a launch poster for my friend and his band for free... took me ages. They never gave me any insight into what they wanted and I had to go and find the support bands to add to the image. Took me two days as I’m visually impaired so takes me ages to draw. Sent them the image. Just got a thumbs up. Then an hour later one of the members tells me they wanted a gambling theme?!! And could I change it.... I said I’m not completely changing it, it’ll take me too long. So I added dice like they were coming out of the rocket and lucky 777 on the rocket itself. ... they didn’t even use the damn poster. I'm not saying everyone needs a professional art teacher, I'm saying no artist is as good as they are without hard work. By saying that they were born with it can actually be dismissive of all the years of practise they've put into it.
LolliPoppy Cookie RIGHT? I think she thought she was complimenting me, too. To get her way.
It CAN be natural, but it's extremely rare having that kind of talent without any prior experience. In all seriousness, pretty much anyone can be an artist if they dedicate the time to practice multiple times a week, if not daily.

Practice practice practice, lots of unpaid time put in anyway :/
Uhm. Some People have the talent for art. Of course you have to practise, and learn new techniques but, it's not a born talent lol. Some people just get art quicker than others.

I'm so sorry about that situation, I think I could give my art for free if it's to members of my dad's side of the family that I trust, my mom and my older sister. Certain coworkers of mine, and that's it.

This is do rude I don't know how people ask that
I smiled at the rude replies. They deserved those.
I think there are a few common reasons why people beg for free art:
-They don't see the value in it because it doesn't serve a functional purpose
-They expect you to be able to make something in 5 minutes: they have no understanding about the creative process
-They think of drawing as a hobby and something for "fun" rather than an occupation (and then get surprised when you're earning money/a living from it, and that other people are actually willing to pay for what your art is worth)
-They think of drawing ability as a gift (and it's your duty to share it with others) rather than an actual skill we've had to work hard on and spend a lot of time on to develop
-They think that by asking for free art they're showing appreciation to the artist, or because they're a "big fan" they deserve it in some way
Somehow though I've only encountered a couple choosing beggars so far asking for free art. Rather than being asked for free art though I tend to get asked for free private tutelage from randos. I reckon demographics plays a huge role!
Lol I get the tutor requests too and if only they knew that I actually have no idea what I'm doing
Nope

Luna Moone The only people I give my art to for free are my best friends, and my family. Just for fun.
I give my art to my cousin for her art classes. (she sucks at drawing)
They feel that they're;
well that they're THEM, so the rules of conduct & appropriate human interactions shouldn't apply to them.
They're equivalent to the people on freeways & streets who try to cut corners with traffic regulations, cause "those rules are for everyone ELSE, not for ME!"
The Church Lady would say, "Well.
