Hey guys, I just want to clarify that when I say that I think my art is “mediocre” I’m not trying to say my art is BAD! I’m just talking about in the grand scheme of things, when compared to some really technically skilled artists my art is considered mediocre. Do I think I exhibit some forms of good technical skill? I know do! But I still see room for improvement, as I should! Does that mean I think my art is bad? No. But I didn’t do the best in communicating that thought.
Also, maybe because I follow a lot of artists who make work very similar to mine that I believe my work is not terribly unique.
I just don’t want anyone to think I’m suggesting that my work is somehow “better” than theirs. I make these videos simply because I want to express my world views and opinions, and I want others to do the same. Not because I think I’m “better” than anyone else.
Maybe instead of saying that I believe my work is “mediocre”, a better word I could have used would have been that I believe I’m at an “intermediate” skill level.

You know, I don't think it's a great idea to decide how good your art is by comparing yourself to other artists, even artists who explore similar themes, have similar techniques, etc. I know a lot of people who gave up that way. Your art is yours, you're on your own trajectory. I think the kind of criteria you should use to mesure how good you art is are things like : how good is my anatomy ? Did I improve ? Did I use a good color selection ? Does it look like I imagined it (I kinda suck with the internal eye)? If not, why ? I would suggest comparing to your past works too, it helps me a lot

Women tend to be too humble even in our modern times ... But mostly people love it when someone thinks big 😉! An artist actually has to 'just' express something. And for what you are able, many of our artist stars can't even do a little glimpse of your ability! You are so great and unique !!!!! And a very great important inspiration for me - thank you soo much that I can see you here 🙏 😘❤️

Professional LITERALLY means to be paid for your work. You are no longer an apprentice or journeyman and people are paying YOU for the work rather than your Master.
You never said you were a Master artist, it a professional, and while I think you COULD sell at a Master level (not THE Masters, different category there) if you tried, there is always room for improvement even at a professional or master level.
Speaking of THE Masters, DaVinci always changed things up, yriex new techniques and sometimes fucked it up horribly...because LEARNING is life long, even after you can draw a circle.

Im sure someone has said this already but the definition of professional is "engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime".
So people who say you aren't a professional just don't know what they're talking about. And tbh they're probably just mad that you have more followers or get more interaction than them.

To tell you the truth, I don't like seeing everyone's perfectly polished work on UA-cam. I like seeing the progress an artist makes. I like see his/her mistakes and how they fix or cope with them. It gives me hope that I can improve as well. If I watched a bunch of videos and every one was freakin' DaVinci, I'd be discouraged and probably give up.
And for what its worth, my definition of a professional is someone who does - or could if they wanted - support themselves doing whatever it is they are doing. For example, say someone works painting houses. They are good at it and make money. That makes them a professional house painter. That same person regularly sculpts and sells those sculptors for good money. Or they at least get regularly offered money or other valuable things for their work. Then he is also a professional sculptor.

Either way you cut it it’s toxic as hell.
At the end of the day labels don’t even matter, Art isn’t brain surgery it’s a form of self expression and as long you’re expressing yourself (in a manner that isn’t toxic obviously) then who the hell are you to say if I’m a professional or not. So I fail to understand the ambiguity in art. Also, professional does not automatically mean good. You can be a pro, but you can still be bad!

There was one UA-cam video i saw that was very inspiring to me in that video a woman was just expressing herself freely without worrying about the judgement of others. In that video she said to make a bad peice of art and that you are allowed to take up space. Even if the art is bad if you love the process of creating it shouldn't matter if its good or bad because you feel free making something meaningful without the validation of others. Art is all about expression. And it doesn't have to be 100% perfect in order to be appreciated.

One of the definitions of "professional" in the Cambridge Dictionary literally says: used to describe someone who does a job that people usually do as a hobby.
One of the examples given is a "professional dancer".
Therefore I completely agree when you describe yourself as a professional artist.
Of course everyone's definition is different and there are also other official definitions of this word but as long as people are understanding that that is the case, there shouldn't even be fights about this to begin with.

Even tho I do a series called Drawsome, I always say "this is just how I do it" since it's more of a challenge than a tutorial. I don't want to give off the vibe of " I know everything and do it my way or your wrong"... My father always says "a professional is anyone who gets paid for their work, even once"... Even if you don't think your work is of the highest quality, there's always going to be someone out there who just has to have it lol.. There was a two year old throwing paint at canvas and most would say it's just hot garbage but those paintings sold for over 10k each! Would you call a 2 year old a "professional" just because she was getting paid for throwing paint? Not really but here we are lol.. Great video, Emily!! So glad your back! 💖

I find circle drawing by eye not that bad, actually. I think the issue is that most people overthink it. In truth, it doesn't need to be perfect. You don't need a circle, you just need an illusion of a circle. No one (I hope) is going to come out with a ruler and check it.
But yeah, no way on Earth do I use circles as a measure of an artist. I tend to look at anatomy, composition, colour theory and rendering. Those may/may not be the most important things, those are just the things that stand out to me.

While it looks "easy", you cannot discredit them as a professional over your personal opinion their work doesn't constitutes as art simply over the assumption (I stress the word assumption) that it looks " simple" to create. The point is: they make living professionally through their commissions.

This video. I worked as an art assistant to a professional artist and the whole argument about what is professional goes across the gamut. It isn't one field even in the comics community, people who are and aren't creatives deem their opinions to matter. While both arguments are legitimate in thought from an academic side. People can't learn without doing. They can't grow with out drive. Everything in this video is pretty accurate. But you are not mediocre. It takes a lot of skill to render skin in that manner, to make such a pop of color transition. Mediocre downplays your skill. One thing that I have tried to remember was someone is always watching you and when you are harsh or mean to the thing people love about what you do, you are insulting them. I don't think you are doing that here at all. Btw. Just something to think about when people get so harsh on their own work. Keep doing what you do

In honesty, at my art uni we've been going over the business side of art. And it's honestly put a huge perspective into the professional business side of the art industry. Some artists deserve huge followings, because their work is amazing or has really good themes or meanings behind them. But they don't, because they don't know how to *sell*... unfortunate fact is, if you know how to sell and handle your art brand as a business correctly. It really shows... regardless, this is ONE example on the spectrum and I'm not at all saying this is what makes a professional haha. Just making a sad point I noticed while watching this and while in my workshop class

I completely agree. I know many artists on ig that although they're not bad, there's sooo many smaller artists with better skills that deserve those numbers more than them but the only reason that doesn't happen is because they don't know how to market themselves and it hurts to see😳

    • @quietlydrifting
      @quietlydrifting 4 роки тому +1

Exactly! I personally just went through a whole business workshop with my uni focused on the business of illustration and just. It's hard when you have to accept that some artists you genuinely love, you can't emulate them no matter how much you really admire them, because, from a business standpoint, they really aren't doing well in that regard.
You can still admire and pull certain things from them, in terms of perhaps they inspire you to draw, but otherwise, you have to find artists who have a good business brand and following built around that, if you want to give yourself a better chance to stand out. It sucks, but really, it all comes down to how well you can sell your product at the end of the day...

    • @quietlydrifting
      @quietlydrifting 4 роки тому +2

@Indigo Rodent Not to mention the intense discouragement for artists to value themselves. Being in this workshop really proved to me just how much my artwork is worth, for the time, effort, and skill level artists provide. The internet has a huge discouragement towards artists charging higher than $300 for a finished illustration piece. So many artists are being brainwashed to think charging anything above $10 is a lot of money. Industry-standard off of freelancing is WAY MORE THAN THAT as I've come to discover. And in order for myself personally, to make any actual living (this is just an example) to make what I'd need to to make ends meet, my commissions would basically be around $40 an hour, which obviously makes a "hefty" cost to flat-sale prices. It's sad so many people don't realize their worth because they're too scared to try anything or push things due to the internet's "free-content" culture.

I constantly feel bad about my work... Impostor Syndrome! I run my own business and I am a grown up (apparently ...) but I still feel foolish and childish pitching ideas or going to meetings! Thanks for this Emily 🎨💜

Im a pretty new artist and hearing people say what they said to you worries me. Because I'm not that skilled and I started an art Instagram last night. I haven't received any hate yet but that's cause it's new and most likely cause I'm just a teenager. I'm not making money. And I can tell that when it's someone's job in art it can get scary

Don't do it for the money. Do it because you love it. Making money at art takes time, and not everyone does. I don't mean to discourage you, and when you're just learning the basics is not the time to feel like you can't sell your work. You have to practice. It's a good idea to learn about selling art and managing money in the meantime. Don't feel intimidated by that; you don't have to learn everything at once.

@@EclecticGreyWitch oh I'm not planning on doing it for money I do it for fun. I completely see where you're coming from. My point is when people make money that's when people seem to get a but salty

I have to tell you..... my mother was a rad artist.... and always strived to teach me... yearned for me to be passionate about it. I never was at a young age.... but...... im 38 now... and about a year ago i had this overwhelming desire...this burning in me to make art.... i did only one painting when i was in my early 20's... which was banging...of coarse got destroyed in a hurricane flood.... but...i seen ur videos... and you were my inspiration to start again. and life has blossomed..internal happiness from depression and alcoholism...so thank you. you're stellar from your art to the gift of speaking with verbology i dig. so thank you for you!

I have been practicing for 15 years no joke and I still have no idea how to draw. I also take drawing classes...I like to blame my shitty drawing skills on my ADHD impatience and OCD where i obsess over something so hard that I don't notice the drawings gone wrong

There is no such thing as "bad" art. If structure and Technique and classes were all that made art "good" then explain why Basquiat who was self taught, and lived to say 'fuck your rules i do me" is consider a Icon? Art is art. And I love yours too.

I think that art of all skill levels should be posted, because it’s a learning opportunity for the artist who made the work and other artists who may have the same problems. Constructive criticism is super important imo and I love getting constructive criticism, as long as it’s actually constructive and not straight up hate.
