- There are Seven Deadly Sins in voice over. Things you should never do under any circumstances, and things that, if you do try to get away with them, I guarantee you it will bite you in the ass, either in the near or long term.
Some of these will seem obvious, some not as obvious, but I can tell you I’ve personally seen multiple examples of ALL of them in the real world, and one of them is not just common, but it runs rampant in our industry.
Today, I’m going to break down these Seven Deadly Sins, explain to you why they are gigantic no-nos written across the sky in red neon, and what the consequences are for committing them are.
In fact, let’s get the consequences out of the way. Are these sins deadly as in will they kill your career? Some actually can. But at the very least, they will kill the most important relationships you have in this business, damage your reputation in the industry, and in some cases, will get your ass hauled into court.
In case I haven’t made it clear, NEVER, as in ever-ever-never do these seven things...

You're so right Paul, especially the distribution of contacts part!
I'm a professional writer who is often asked for names of editors and other authority figures at various publications. I politely tell them to do their own research, rather than piggyback off my efforts.
Hope you're doing great!
I’m sure there are lazy people in all professions. Thanks, and backatcha, Spencer.
I'm constantly amazed at those who pay for anything, complain about it, and then move on to pay for it again. It's psychotic!
Can’t agree more.
Voluntary masochism!!
In my former life, I used to sell life and health insurance, and the idea that #1 would happen never even occurred to me until it happened to me in inverse. When I was starting out, rather than me asking for clients, At our weekly warm-up meeting, I was talking with other members of my team about large prospects I'd gotten meetings with and one of the more experienced agents actually called one of my prospects and said "hey, don't go with him, use me instead!" and since then I have NEVER opened my mouth about my book of business to any damn body, I don't care who they are.
Stealing is for the weak and lazy. But yeah, there are plenty of those people around.
Deadly Sins indeed, Paul! This is an amazing guideline for the new members of the VO community. Very direct and insightful video, Paul!
Thanks so much, Carlos.
Two things....
1) I'm starting a band. May I name it Gargantuan Douche Canoe with your blessing? I refuse to sign an NDA though. 😂
2) If you're dragged into court, I would argue that your ass is in no way happy in that moment.
GDC is the new NWA
If you’re clueless enough to violate an NDA, you’re clueless enough to be happy in court.
And by all means, yes, and let me know where you’re playing. 🤣
Posting auditions online is the wost. I see it all the time and MANY times it's ruined it for our entire roster because they want clout.
Just dumb and silly avoidable.
Most of these (if not all) seem to be motivated by getting money quickly. I'm glad that I decided to stay involved with this for the long haul. I'm also glad that I haven't done any of these ignorantly...at least, I HOPE that I haven't done them, LOL.
You got this, Terry. 👊❤️
Yet another value centric, explicit, candid piece Paul. Just a request if you could consider; the content is obviously great but the sharp sibilance makes it fatiguing to stay along. Kindly de-ess in post for us to remain tuned-in. Thanks Paul….
There’s already a de-esser in the chain.
I thought I was the only one who's gotten #1! It's not just bad form, but it goes without saying that someone's VO contacts would be very tailored to their personal work, so it may not even be useful to the person asking. 100% the person who did it in my case was someone who I liked and really wanted to work with (and I was casting a lot at that time as well as booking myself), but I absolutely took them off the list at that point. You've got to be professional.
Yeah. I think the phrase SMH was invested for these people.
I'm so happy you said Number 1. A few weeks ago my dad (not a voice actor) was suggesting I should do that and I was like "man are you crazy!?" 🤣🤣
Good for you, Brad. Show him this. 🤣👊
Paul! I look forward to these every week. Fantastic info!!
I’m glad it helps!
thinking about trying that wife line on a few " worthless guys with hot wives" I happen to know..... just sayin .... lol..... as usual , Great thoughts Paul....
🤣 Thanks, Chris.
I've seen quite a few VOs posting videos of their auditions over the years. I wince and wonder if they have permission. Some will state that they do, but the others...? Yikes.
What is the POINT of posting an audition? That’s like posting a highlight reel of swings and misses.
Lets remove VO for a seconds. These are basic l8fe principles of decency , courtesy, respect and the intrinsic usage of common DAMN sense !
Common sense still isnt common ..
As always thank you sir for your wisdom
Very kind of you, Ray. Thanks for watching.
