Lol, that moment where he moves to the music. That's me in every game when I'm waiting for something. Very cool and balanced level. Not too difficult, but still requires thought. The kind of approachable yet satisfying design you'd expect from a Wayforward dev.
Exactly! I love that his intention was simply to create a thoughtful level, instead of treating the relationship with players as a masochistic joke. Really respect this one. And I totally do that too. 😆
That's a pretty cool stage. I'm not crazy about 'puzzle levels' in Mario Maker, but I thought this one was well done with the possible exception of the Yoshi bits.
Me imagino uno en donde phil fish haga un nivel. Ya me lo imagino: con insultos en todos lados e intentando hacerlo bonito y que cueste $90 para jugarlo ;v
This explains a lot about the Shantae games... because this level doesn't look fun or interesting at all. So much waiting around for such little payoff, completely linear design swept behind the illusion of choice, and he picked the most annoying possible music for it too.

The music bit was funny as hell.
:)

Didn't expect to see you here
I thought Mario was just having a medical issue.
I appreciate that I'm not the only one in the world that moves and jumps to the music when waiting for stuff in the game.
Yup. You're all alone there
Most creative level I have seen so far. Wouldn't expect any less from Wayforward, kudos!
At 4:00 when he jumps to the music 😂
You can tell he works on Shantae! A lot of the levels in the games actually have you moving to the music.
Without a doubt that is the best level yet; there's not even a close second. I like the way this guy thinks.
That's when you see when a dev-designer is *actually* a gamer: the design just oozes with creativity and quirkiness.
Dwight Schrute Dwight Shrute, my muse, what are you doing here?
This level was the most ingenious of those that i've seen on this series.
I'll bet Mario would feel pretty dang awkward if he found a Mystery Mushroom and ended up as Shantae.
Perhaps this is Shantae after using a dance to become Mario
That was a really creative level gimmick. I'm surprised I've never seen anyone think of such a thing before!
leave it to wayforward to create such a thought-out and creative level!
That was an amazing level and a great video, too. I really love it when designers talk about their design philosophy in these videos.
I'd like to see James Montagna make a 3D Shantae game in Dreams on PS4! That would be the coolest thing ever!
the rhythmic wait-punching was cute
3:57 I love the person who's playing this so much
this is great! really cool to see a wayforward dev on this show, they've made some of my favorite platformers.
As a kid I would have asked my brother for help in this level.
This is my favorite one so far!
Wow clever level desing, simple idea but smart execution
Nice level, James! Now... maybe you can convince the people working on the next Shantae project NOT to have a trophy requiring a 100% speedrun... XD
That was great! Nicely done!
This one is really good
This was such clever level design. Nicely done!
Just an added note, you CAN beat the goomba room (4:00) with a koopa... Its not faster though. You could also do it with a buzzy

At least he doesn't have Yoshi jump to his death for the hundredth time.
3:57 same dude
Very, very imaginative!!!
Now I want to see Keiji Inafune make a Mario Maker level.
Love the rythm dance when waiting for shit to happen :D
That was quite the adventure
Goddamn, that bonus level music is driving me insane. It wasn't meant to be heard for more than 30 seconds. XD
Fantastic.
#ShantaeforSmashDLC
That's a really good level actually.
#ShantaeForSmash
*starts the slow clap*
Shantae and the Mario's Curse
BEST LEVEL EVER
ok it looks cool, but how long would it take you to figure out how how to beat it? i feel like it would be super frustrating.
that is actually a great level
Nice job. Now bring Shantae to GOG, please. And remake the original GBC game!
BlakeCasimir Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse are already on GOG. The first game, however, remains Nintendo exclusive.
Nice, but couldn't you use the spinning jump on the yellow block at the end?
He didnt know
+dragonvale19 Did he mention it somewhere?
+Don't push the B button no.... I just think its obvious. :3
Genius.
This reminds me of a ghost house in the pc rom hack brutal mario world
Me imagino uno en donde phil fish haga un nivel. Ya me lo imagino: con insultos en todos lados e intentando hacerlo bonito y que cueste $90 para jugarlo ;v
the puzzles solutions seems too arbitrary to figure out though
Khe pro
800th like

PsychoJosh
Just shut up. You don't need to have your incessant whining here. Go do that in your basement or something.
Also can these really be defined as puzzles? A lot of them are just "do the only thing you can do".
