  • Joshua Schroeder, Official Institute (OI) chairman of the board, hosts the next monthly meeting, Thursday, April 11, 2024 talking specifically about NFHS basketball signals. This meeting will discuss good signals, bad signals and even some signals that are not officially signals but can be useful when managing a typical basketball game.
These monthly OI meetings are conducted to aid basketball officials, new and veteran alike, with instruction on how to see and rule on a variety of plays so everyone can improve their skill and ability of officiating, while doing it together in a fun environment. OI believes watching and discussing videos in a group setting like this increases retention and reinforces rule knowledge by collaborating with fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by watching plays repetitively, helps officials to remember what is talked about regarding philosophies and practical application of rules in real game situations. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.
This online meeting includes 21 video clips all of which encompass some sort of signal, sequence of signals or mechanics used.
    0:00 - Intro
1:02 - When under a minute, how long do we hold 1 finger up? What is the purpose of this signal?
4:52 - Should we signal the under a minute signal while running down the court in transition?
9:30 - Holding up 1 finger while counting backcourt and officiating play that results in a foul.
10:44 - First horn signal for a timeout. How long do we hold this finger up?
13:19 - 3 point shot attempt but shooters foot was on the line. Does this have a signal?
16:17 - The NFHS says the bird dog signal is optional so when do we use it?
19:05 - Foul called by Trail but the Lead showed a "blocked shot" signal.
22:58 - Held ball signal should always start with an open hand up to stop the clock first, then the held ball signal follows.
26:29 - The very common "bear hug" signal.
27:47 - A not closely guarded signal is not needed when the defender is clearly too far away?
29:47 - A block signal was used on a foul that looked like a push. Use the proper signal to convey the foul that happened.
31:17 - Official tries to retrieve a ball going out of bounds before signaling what happened.
33:12 - Official did not properly stop the clock, then realized and corrected her sequence right away.
35:36 - Count the basket signal. Do we use the same hand as the fist that is displayed or is it the other hand?
38:20 - It appears the officials waved off the basket and then immediately after counts the basket. How can this be?
42:18 - Signals were fine but the lack of hustle makes this official look like he does not care.
44:57 - Do not turn your back to the players when signaling an out of bounds.
47:55 - Official grabs his whistle out of his mouth before signaling. Do we need to worry about our whistle?
50:13 - When signaling a three point attempt, be sure to extend the hand that is toward the table.
51:55 - 2 hand hand check signal used on a 1 hand handcheck. Use proper signals to report and if needed, unofficial signals to clarify what happened.
56:41 - Tripping signal is not NFHS. Do not use college mechanics in high school games.
57:50 - Meeting schedule for the next meeting.
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.

If I do a bird dog of any kind it's a modified version with a point with the index. If you go with a straight up signal, delay the signal a moment or two to convey what you had, then there won't be any conflicting signals.

Correct nobody notices the finger after the first horn so after I come in and signal first horn for the end of the time out and if the players are not coming out of the huddle I tell the players sitting down to stand up and that seems to get everyone out of the huddle faster.
