Man, oh man. I miss those days. I remember EXACTLY where I was watching that inning. (eleventh) I was at South Center mall, and they had a TV on in one of the stores display window, and a small crowd included myself watched how it all unfolded. With the hit by Griffey, and then Edgar gaming winning hit that followed was absolutely AMAZING. We all were just screaming and having a good time. That was a great moment in my life, and I was probably around 18 at the time. Moments like that is what made baseball fun for me. So hopefully, the Mariners can put together a team that works well together and also win together so in the future, another young kid could have great memories the way I do and did.

I’m not even a Mariners fan, but this is one of my favorite baseball memories from the 90’s. Seeing Griffey round second base, without a doubt in his mind that he was stopping at 3rd sends chills. What a series this was. Too bad the Mariners lost to Cleveland. Would have loved to see Griffey play in a World Series with Seattle.

Next thing you know you’re a lifelong fan of someone you thought you didn’t care for

I'll also say this, that Seattle crowd was so AWESOME! I can only imagine how loud it was, in that place. No matter what the team is, I always appreciate passionate fans. Mariner fans were as passionate as it got, back then.
They still are, even though this was the apex of Seattle Baseball, they’ve moved beyond the need to win and just love the team and the game. It’s kind of beautiful actually.
I was at that game….the roof was about to come off. One of the great memories of my life. We also found Steinbrenners limo after the game that night…that was fun too lol

Had to re watch to bring back one of the best memories with my pops. Hope I can take my kids to a game and have some of the same memories one day.
To think I nearly got to see my favorite team (Braves) play against my favorite player. I never realized how close the Mariners were to beating Cleveland. GRIFFEY = GOAT
I'm not even a Mariners fan but I have that call down by heart. (I live in Portland and we have Mariners games on the radio here.) When I went back and listened to Niehaus' radio call I was about as happy for him as I would have expected any Mariner fan to be. I replayed that call over and over just to hear Niehaus' joy.
Its hard to put into words how much this one game meant and still means to Mariner fans, but it is sure incredible to watch. Mariner fan or not, this is a must see. People in Seattle still to this day, refer to that final play as "The Double." Goosebumps for sure. So good to see Edgar get in the hall.
I was a heartbroken Yankee fan but lots of credit goes to that Mariners ball club. That lineup was relentless. We were three outs away……Griffey was a force of nature.
Though that was actually the only time he lived up to his moniker as the "Yankees Killer" in the postseason, in 2000 and 2001 he failed to live up to it.
Personally, I prefer this version of the broadcast beginning @3:39:30 coming from the legendary HOF Dave Niehaus... "Right now, the Mariners looking for the tie. They would take a fly ball; they would love a base hit into the gap and they could win it with Junior's speed. The stretch and the 0-1 pitch on the way to Edgar Martínez; swung on and lined down the left field line for a base hit! Here comes Joey! Here is Junior to third base, they're going to wave him in! The throw to the plate will be...LATE! The Mariners are going to play for the American League Championship! I don't believe it! It just continues! MY OH MY! Edgar Martínez with a double ripped down the left field line and they are going crazy at the Kingdome!" R.I.P. Dave Niehaus 1935 - 2010
I just finished watching the MLB production on his career. It's well covered during one of the segments. Steinbrenner stoked the fire apparently by running him out of the dugout as a kid. This game gave Griffey some measure of comeuppance.
lifer Mariners fan. Witnessed Ken Griffey Jr. crash into Kingdome's right center field to take away a charged Ruben Sierra shot. the man made the catch, dislocated his shoulder. Regular season, everyday game for baseball fans like you and me. Then, in 1995. 1st to home. Andy Benes pitched his heart out. Stellar guy, I wrote to him as a kid, and he signed his Rookie card, Tops card, from Evansville
That Doug Strange at bat was so crucial. Yeah Edgar and Griffey basically single handedly took out the Yankees but the level of discipline to lay off a 3-2 split is so high. Without that great at bat baseball might not exist in Seattle. The at bat is still epic, every time I watch it my heart pounds.
Cone was over 140 pitches and completely gassed, but since Showalter had no confidence in anyone in the pen he was left out there to cough up the lead.
@@luisbracero7198they wasted a lot of talent in the late 90s and early 2000s. That being said, it might be their time now, even with the Astros being the team to beat in the MLB as a whole.
@@ianalex9062They never got good starting pitching in the 90's or they would've had a better chance with all that offense. In 1995 after Johnson there was nobody
Just an absolute beast of a pitch to a guy already running scared who’s 2 for 16 against the guy, and that was the early Johnson. Not the 94-96 Johnson. But man, this game Johnson just ruled! Was it all for nothing? Yes and no. I mean they didn’t get past the Indians, but they did beat Griffey’s rivals from back when he was a kid. And this was the series that decided if Mariners get a new stadium. Their roof on this one fell down a month prior. And Without a new stadium they leave Seattle for ever. The vote for taxes to pay for it was so close but lost, and it was winning these play offs that had the mayor call for a special meeting to pay for it anyways. So without these play offs we don’t get ichiro, we don’t get Griffey back in his last season, Ichiro’s dream. And we don’t get one of the worst baseball squads to continue for the next 25 years. Idk they had so many crazy things happen in their franchise history, but no World Series. And yet for the fans, they don’t care, they love this team and will always remember the mid 90’s and early 2000’s Mariners, but everyone will always remember the 1995 Seattle a Mariners, the most winning team in history at this point.
@@thedude19766 Yeah he was, CBS coverage was supposed to start on April 14th 1990, but he was fired less than two weeks before the season started due to CBS not renewing his contract. We can go into what happened in that whole situation but that would take all night. Brent was eventually hired by ABC Sports on May 3rd 1990 to do mainly college football and basketball to avoid schedule conflicts with Al Michaels who was reportedly trying to get out of his contract with ABC to join CBS as the lead baseball announcer (after he was supposedly suspended for hiring his daughter as a messenger during the 1989 World Series) but those rumors were shot down and CBS settled with Jack Buck.

Edgar Martinez is one of the best players of my lifetime and to see him not get the HOF votes he deserves is atrocious. He's a DH? So what! If a position exists, why can't that position be in the HOF?
I agree, he was a terrific hitter in this series and very consistent throughout his career. If they let great hitters that were terrible fielders, why not let Edgar in?
Edgar Martinez only played 12 full seasons, but those 12 seasons were spectacular. Edgar put up .324/37/145 in his age 37 season! In 1993, Edgar had the same amount of runs scored (121) as Albert Belle who hit 50 home runs, Edgar only hit 29. Edgar Martinez and Frank Thomas were the best all-around hitters of the 1990s.
NC37 wasnt even about about bein terrible,,he was average,,,ubt his Hamstring and the turf that did him in....and a bad field that popped it that wasnt i think even the kingdome.
ill never forget that game(Griffey was my fav player)and my cousin tried to change the channel on me right before that final play lol.i remember having to snatch the remote forecfully out of her hand lol
Even if Seattle lost to Cleveland, Edgar will always be my pick for the 1995 Playoff MVP. My baseball hero, and the ultimate Mariner. We miss you Edgar.
Guy was never linked to any steroids scandals, lists, etc. He was a complete hitter who is one of the top 5 hitters I saw play in the 1990s. The key factor some voters use is "Can you tell the story of baseball without ___________ ???" and I can't. You can't tell the complete history of baseball without Edgar Martinez, without how he defined complete hitting in the 1990s, and without this game right here which is one of the best games in one of the best postseason series ever played. The winning hit, knocking the Yankees out. Guy is a legend not just to M's fans but to baseball fans, like me, the White Sox fan. Pedro Martinez was asked who his toughest batter to face was on MLB Network and he said Edgar Martinez.
Remember listening to this on the radio in the car when I was 13 on the way back from a Detroit Lion game, I was going nuts my dad had to settle me day. I loved Griffey, Jr, he was and still is one of my favorite players, one of the smoothest swings ever.
Twice in his career Randy Johnson entered as relief pitcher against the Yankees. Twice the Yankees were eliminated from post-season in those games (against the Diamondbacks in 2001 being the other one).
Yeah, in fact I remember Peter Gammons on ESPN tonight after Game 4, talking about the way Griffey and Edgar were hitting, he said, "I wonder if it's ever occurred to them they might make an out". Buhner and Tino hit well too. That 5th game left me close to tears. The next year and many afterwards helped heal the pain very much.

I'll also say this, that Seattle crowd was so AWESOME! I can only imagine how loud it was, in that place. No matter what the team is, I always appreciate passionate fans. Mariner fans were as passionate as it got, back then.
What a spectacular event! Chilling!!!!!
They still are, even though this was the apex of Seattle Baseball, they’ve moved beyond the need to win and just love the team and the game. It’s kind of beautiful actually.
Thats Seattle Key Arena was the loudest stadium when the Sonics were there and Seahawks had the lousest fans as well
I was at that game….the roof was about to come off. One of the great memories of my life.
We also found Steinbrenners limo after the game that night…that was fun too lol
As of late it is the same. Large loud crowds.
My dad brought me to this game with my sisters, I was 8. 33 now. We were in the nosebleeds. But that was alright. My dad passed nine years ago on this day june 14th. . Had to re watch to bring back one of the best memories with my pops. Hope I can take my kids to a game and have some of the same memories one day.
I remember at the age of 10 watching this as it happened... Greatest game I've ever seen in my life.
I remember this like it was yesterday 25 years later it still makes me smile
Mattingly's last game he ever played. A young ARod and Jeter watching from the bench. This game brings back so many memories for me.
Who's here watching in Covid 19 pandemic when no sports are playing.
Right here lol
Nobody
Me!
Me in Tacoma, my dude
Me!
We were three outs away……Griffey was a force of nature.
man, the baseball ROYALTY on the field in this game, up and down both lineups and pitching staffs.
Edgar murdered The Yankees in this series. Good God, I still have nightmares about him, more so than Jr.
Though that was actually the only time he lived up to his moniker as the "Yankees Killer" in the postseason, in 2000 and 2001 he failed to live up to it.
He actually hit ok in the 2000 series 1 homer with a .737 ops. He was however, horrendous in 2001.
Jon Bois and SB Nation brought me here.
Me too. It's nice to see two Hall of Famers acting like it right? Griffey and Edgar did not choke.
why did they bring you here
@@WhudYouSayJoe Jon Bois did a really interesting documentary series on the Mariners on the SB Nation channel.
What a great game. I remember this game from when I was a teenager...Mo Rivera vs Big Unit was really something special to see.
MY OH MY! Edgar Martínez with a double ripped down the left field line and they are going crazy at the Kingdome!"
R.I.P. Dave Niehaus
1935 - 2010
I miss Dave
..so many memories...
As a sports fan, it doesn't get much better than this!🎉❤
Ken Griffey Jr. claimed he HATED the Yankees, because of experiences he had in the locker room as a kid when his father played there!
It's a crime he never won a ring
YANKEES SUCK!
Yes. Thank you Billy Martin.
@@LeoWhalen1933 What does that makes the Mariners?
I just finished watching the MLB production on his career. It's well covered during one of the segments. Steinbrenner stoked the fire apparently by running him out of the dugout as a kid. This game gave Griffey some measure of comeuppance.
lifer Mariners fan. Witnessed Ken Griffey Jr. crash into Kingdome's right center field to take away a charged Ruben Sierra shot. the man made the catch, dislocated his shoulder. Regular season, everyday game for baseball fans like you and me. Then, in 1995. 1st to home. Andy Benes pitched his heart out. Stellar guy, I wrote to him as a kid, and he signed his Rookie card, Tops card, from Evansville
oh man, these were the days before the Seahawks went to their first super bowl. Mariners and Sonics were the toast of the town. Good times.
I was a senior in college. I remember this game like it was yesterday. What a game.
Cone made that one easy when he threw in the dirt feet in front of strange
Cone was over 140 pitches and completely gassed, but since Showalter had no confidence in anyone in the pen he was left out there to cough up the lead.
This game is THE memory for Mariners fans. Great to re-watch, but also bittersweet since it's THE memory for us 😂
Man... Griffey, ARod, Mo, Jeter (though he didn't play), Mattingly, Boggs, Johnson, Tino, Edgar... how many amazing players in one setting??
No kidding. Great series with all time great players on the field.
Incredible that Seattle never won a WS. Just bad luck
@@luisbracero7198they wasted a lot of talent in the late 90s and early 2000s. That being said, it might be their time now, even with the Astros being the team to beat in the MLB as a whole.
Ruben Sierra..
@@ianalex9062They never got good starting pitching in the 90's or they would've had a better chance with all that offense. In 1995 after Johnson there was nobody
This was such a great game. I remember watching it live in highschool, but it still gave me goosebumps to watch. Wonderful.
Johnson's first pitch to Boggs is one of my favorite in baseball
Why?
@@sleeknub he threw at Boggs because he knew he was going to square up so as to take control of the box
@@sleeknub Because he said "You bunt on me and I will kill you"
He sat a hall of fame player like he was a toddler
@@Verlisify but Boggs tried to bunt again on the next pitch.
Was at this game. Best sporting event I've ever been to.
It’s a yearly tradition to wake up with this playing
Classic game, classic time in Seattle. The city is definitely not the same anymore.
Great great call from Musberger! I had no idea he did this game
Search Dave Niehaus calling this game. so much better.
This guy almost makes my wish Joe Buck did it back then. Almost.
He almost became the voice of CBS's MLB coverage in the early 90's right before he was fired and replaced with Jack Buck.
WHOA! Crazy to see SNES drunk here. Love your vids!
Brent called the last three games for ABC, with Gary Thorne calling the first two for NBC.
I went to four games in this season. The noise was monstrous 😄 warm up to all Seattle sports.
Brent Musbergers call was almost lyrical with its simplicity and fluidity.
Musburger was in the zone for this one.
DYK that he was supposed to be the lead announcer for baseball on CBS?
@@wyattmailloux9419 mossberger and Jack buck we're both good broadcasters
Except true Mariner fans were watching with the TV audio off and listening to Dave Niehaus call on the radio.
Brent's call is so pure and filled with real excitement. He's one of the greatest!!!!
His voice was trembling. LINE DRIVE, WE ARE TIED. GRIFFEY IS COMING AROUND. IN THE CORNER MURPHY. HE'S GONNA TRY AND SCORE. HERE'S THE DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP.MARINERS WIN IT. MARINERS WIN IT.As they say, the rest, as they say, is history.
Murphy?
And without that, the Seahawks move to Los Angeles and the Mariners to who knows where.
It's time to recognize the DH
isn't going anywhere.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised
if the National League adopts it.
Edgar should be in the HOF
vaibanez17 18 years he played and only 2200 hits, thats why hes not in the hall.... mvp awards = zero...pennants= zero...
20 years ago! Are you kidding me?? Where does life go anyway?
+bnegs521 Exactly... 20 years just disappeared lol...
Same. I feel so old. I'm always surprised when I see the current players who were born in the late 90's.
Way too fast!
ill never forget that game(Griffey was my fav player)and my cousin tried to change the channel on me right before that final play lol.i remember having to snatch the remote forecfully out of her hand lol
25 now lol
thank you for keeping the commercial interruptions to a minimum guys
Pedro Martinez was asked who his toughest batter to face was on MLB Network and he said Edgar Martinez.
vaibanez17 and Mariano Rivera said same About Edgar..
Why can't sport broadcast have these kind of intros again?
I know. I love the intros. It's like you're watching a real show.
I miss the intros also
Because people would actually enjoy them. Can't have that anymore...
They don't have the commentators anymore of this caliber.
@@MeneTekelUpharsin tbs has some great intros
I remember watching this game with my mom and she went nuts when Edgar hit that ball and drove in Griffey Jr
I was watching Bigfoot videos, passed out and woke up halfway through this
As a 9 year old kid in Seattle this was the pinnacle of my existence
I still remember watching this game 23 years ago.
passed out and woke up to this playing 🤣😭
Remember listening to this on the radio in the car when I was 13 on the way back from a Detroit Lion game, I was going nuts my dad had to settle me day. I loved Griffey, Jr, he was and still is one of my favorite players, one of the smoothest swings ever.
Why is UA-cam always bringing new here when i fall asleep
I was in the house. Left field, row 10 or so. UNFREAKIN believable three games.
Dave Neihaus' call in the bottom of the 11th is one of the best calls ever.
Only 3 people hit the like button that's disrespect
This is the coolest thing I have ever watched
Welcome to the MLB Hall of Fame Mr. Martinez
Just think id they had griffey martinez a rod ichiro and johnson all play at the same time same year
Grateful to be able to watch this on UA-cam. I would have probably enjoyed watching the commercials too.
Amazing game this was (and I'm a Yankees fan).
mb923 she
I also remember this at the PHWFF… man, I laughed my ass off at that screening. So happy I found this!
Twice in his career Randy Johnson entered as relief pitcher against the Yankees. Twice the Yankees were eliminated from post-season in those games (against the Diamondbacks in 2001 being the other one).
What. A. Game. Lol, gotta love that home crowd throughout that game. Sucks they didn't get to win it all that year
2:34:02 In watching this pitch, I can't remember being more tense watching any moment from any sporting event in my life.
By the 8th inning:
David Cone gave up his first walk (a thing seldom seen these days)
David Cone had +140 pitches (a thing never seen these days)
Not really a Mariners fan, but love watching this. Gotta love Jr.
