QUITTING GMAIL - alternatives for email, calendar, contacts

- As I keep exploring alternatives to Google services, I'm now looking into which email services can replace the allmighty Gmail. I won't be looking at other big companies services, such as Outlook.com, since they have the same weird practices as Google. Let's look at our options !

Why quitting gmail
Gmail is a great service. It's free, it has plenty of storage, uses labels, allows to archive messages, and generally looks pretty good. It's also using all your data and reading all your emails. That's the main problem, for me.
Proton Mail
It's a solution designed to be as private as possible, where everything is encrypted, and no information is shared.
Your email account can be created without giving any personal info, and it is of course open source as well.
Proton Mail has a free tier, limited to 500Mb of storage and 150 emails per day, which is more than enough for my needs. More demanding users can part with about 4 euros a month, upping the storage to 5gb and 1000 emails per day. This tier also allows you to use your own email domain, and create up to 5 email addresses.
Interface-wise, Proton Mail looks alright. It doesn't have the clean, nice look of Gmail or Outlook.com, and the colors are not really to my tastes, but if you feel like it, you can use custom CSS to style it the way you like.
Proton mail can import your contacts, but unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any sync options with third party clients. The whole thing being encrypted makes regular email clients unable to read or access anything. There is an application, called Proton Bridge, that allows you to sync your email on a client, but it only works on Thunderbird, and is still in beta.
Net - Courier
Net C, or Net courrier, is a european mail provider. They not only provide an email service, but also some storage space (500Mo by default), an adress book, calendar, and photo storage service.
Creating an account is free, and lets you pick the domain name between a bunch of different propositions.
The TLDR is that free accounts are subjected to ads through third party cookies, including targeted ads, and premium accounts are not. Net-C won't read your emails, though, to offer ads specifically taileord to what you wrote or received.
Looks-wise, Net-C isn't that great, with a huge header, and boxy design, but it's clear enough, and can be customized, with different colors and sizes.
If you don't like the webmail, though, you can sync email with any IMAP capable client, as well as the calendar with caldav and ICS, and the address book with carddav. Net-C also supports Exchange Active Sync if you're into that sort of thing.
Even the storage space can be accessed remotely through FTP or WebDav ! This is great, since it means that your Net-C email, contacts, and calendar can be synced with any client you'd like to use, thus escaping the ads present in the webmail.
Net-C offers a Premium package, for 12 euros a year. This includes 20 Go of email storage, 5 Go of cloud storage, the removal of ads, as well as the access to the POP3 protocol for mail syncing.
If you want more cloud storage, you can buy a "cloud pack", but prices are pretty high, with 500Go costing 40€ per month, so I'd recommend finding another solution.
Zoho Mail
Zoho is a big company, providing services ranging from email, to a full blown CRM, to online document editing, project management, and many, many more. Zoho Mail is a full featured solution, integrating a mailbox, contacts, a calendar, tasks, and notes. Zoho guarantees privacy, and does not use or collect your data outside of what it needs to actually provide you the email account.
Interface-wise, Zoho looks more modern than the other services I tried before.
The free personal account includes your "@zoho.com" email adress, as well as no ads, two factor authentication, imap and Pop sync for email, and caldav sync for calendar. Zoho is a highly configurable service, with a ton of preferences.
Free tier users get 5GB of mail storage, but you can upgrade, with prices ranging from 3$ a month for 30gb, to 6$ a month for 100Gb. Both these tiers include access to a ton more Zoho services, and the prices are pretty reasonable even for an individual user
Conclusion
There are other email providers out there, but these are the ones that stuck with me. For more privacy-focused users, Proton Mail seems like the obvious choice. It has its limits, such a syncing with other clients, but this is the price to pay for full email encryption.
I now hesitate between Zoho and Net-C. On the one hand, Zoho seems like a full featured replacement for a lot of other google services, such as Drive, Docs, Keep, and many more. On the other hand, Net-C seems like a great independant solution, and is more in keeping with the "one provider per service" approach I'm looking for.

Gmail is a n amazing email service if you don't mind the mailman opening your mail and selling what they find to interested parties.

Even though I don't mind paying some bucks for such a service if it is fully trustworthy, there are people who'd not want to pay.
@@surajkpanigrahi Thing is, you wouldn't need to, per se. Firstly, categorizing internet connection as a right, and transitioning it to a public utility would go a long way. Secondly, there are ways of offering free services and making a profit that don't include violating the user's privacy. You can have ads, they're just less snoopy.
Also, it's worth noting, I'm coming at this from an American point of view. We don't really pay for our mail. A few cents for a stamp on outgoing, incoming is free. I don't know if that's the system elsewhere in the world. Even if that system was replicated with email, that's fairly affordable for most, and if categorized as a right and treated as a public utility, it could be paid for through an annual tax instead of on each actual email sent, which would solve the problem for those unable to afford it.
Company like Google doesn't intersting about the content in your email. So it's not like they wanted to read your private emails. They are only interested in personal information attached to your email. (not the attachments)

@@feetlunatic5134 As if Apple's ToS is any different. Their new privacy rules are clear that they want to own your data for advertisement purposes, nothing else. Just like google is trying to do with FLOCs

Google doesn't sell it, it uses it to serve you with better ads.
By selling it to other companies. Sure, they only sell access to that data, but that’s still a sale.
I get about one in 20 ads that's even remotely relevant. Mostly a bunch of game ads. The only game I'm playing is Life.
@@TheLinuxEXP I switched from Gmail to Protonmail some months ago, but not primarily because GMail uses my data (although it is also true) but rather because Gmail step-by-step became too and unnecessarily complex, unfathomable difficult, and the GUI changed too frequently.
It is extra stress, in spite of that I am not a "greenhorn" as far as the computertechnology are concerned, because I also use Linux (since the last 20 years approximately), and my distro is the LFS...
So I am not beginner at all, but my opinion is that in case of I need a bicycle, then I do not like if Google gives me a spaceship (actually, a Deathstar...) in place of my bicycle... That is, if I need only a simple email services, then I do not need such a too complex whatyamacallit than gmail, calendar and numerous other things too...
And I got a sad experience, too. I had an other gmail account, too, from the "ancient times". I wanted to login there, my last login was years long before. I knew my password of course. But gmail wrote me it checks my gadget (???!!!) and before I used of course a totally other computer (naturally, years later I have of course a new laptop!), it asked me to other verification by the phone. But I had no more that phone and old phone number. So I lost everything which was on that gmail account... Damned gmail!
My expectation, if I know my password then I can login, without any extra idiocies!
If I use weak password or I forget it, then it must be my private problem. My password is my responsibility, that's okay. If I know this, I have RIGHT to login! If I forget it, then not, and then I was the stupid one, that is also okay. But how it is possible that I KNEW my password, and I even so cannot login?!
I do not like this "fatherly manner" by the gmail, that it supposes it knows everything always better than me, and it will decide what will the best for me!

I just want to move away from big tech because I have too much of them in my life. So before I switch to something I gotta make sure they aren't ultimately owned by amazon or apple or google or...
have you also noticed that when you move away from big tech, everything feels somehow nicer? I've started moving away from things like google/chrome/microsoft and it feels calmer
@Alien West that in particular has lots of compatibility issues sadly since most software doesn’t bother supporting minor platforms.

And Linux alone is not the choice, there's FreeBSD, OpenBSD...etc.

I traded gmail for Zoho many many years ago. When I opened my business I was looking for accounting software, and found Zoho One, which gives me a ton of things that might not QUITE be perfect, but they're really good, and a LOT less expensive than getting "the best" of everything. I like the mail MUCH better than gmail, and the rest of the products are pretty good.
I quit gmail a couple of years ago, I use ProtonMail. My email needs are very simple, I just don't want them screened.

@@FriedEgg101 I kindof freaked out when I first discovered it years ago. I got an email from a travel agency confirming a flight that automatically appeared on my calendar. I then got targeted ads for things mentioned in the email. Call me old fashioned, but this is creepy and I don't like it.

I am currently juggling 3 email accounts: my personal GMail account, and my personal and work ProtonMail accounts. I will ditch GMail soon!

@@mylodge312 the only reason we are forced to use their services is because people (parents, friends,) refuse to switch over because “google is better, idc about information being sold lmao”. I’m kinda stuck and a lot of people i know too. Pretty sad in my case but I’m as private as I can get.

Nice video. On my side, I use infomaniak, which is a Swiss company.
They provide a decent webmail client, but I use it mainly through third parties clients. Recently they added a calendar feature that I need to look at.
What I like with them, apart from being located in a country that respects privacy, is that they aim to simplify the way to setup email clients.
I ran my own SMTP servers in my office or at home for over twenty years. I gave up when spam suppression became too much work in the mid-2000's. The other thing you need to know is whether your ISP allows it and lets the appropriate ports through (meaning you may need to be able to configure your router, and/or have a commercial rather than residential account, since residential accounts assume, or used to assume, that the traffic will be overwhelmingly incoming). Of course DHCP makes the job more complicated ... you may need a static IP number (I don't know how one can easily get around changing IP's these days). The nice aspect of having your own server is that your e-mail is not stored anywhere else.

and apparently a calendar in beta for paid tiers...

Yeah but email server is service that I really don't want to maintain by myself. There's a lot of configuration and advanced technologies that make mail server very hard to make it secure and configured in the right way.
@@BuriTechVids Nope, for mail hosting just use mailu, and Nextcloud comes with an email client. If you dont want to set up Nextcloud, just set up Neutron which just uses the ProtonMail UI with whatever server you have.
Once I used to think about switching to one of these. But later, it came to my mind that most of my friends , companies etc use gmail. So Google can technically read my emails from their inbox anyway. I think this makes switching providers pointless. Anyway, it's good to see this nice video
Atleast i can keep my calendar data safe on tutamail. And its not just about compromising, we should support others and keep the competition going in terms of prices and privacy which is good for a consumer.
If you don't switch then your friends and colleagues aren't gonna switch because, after all, Google can track their emails from your inbox anyway.

That really should be a reason to ditch google than stay. The more people who do, the better off we all will be. Plus, its unprofessional for a company to use gmail suite anyway.

I've been using protonmail for a month or so now and I am really impressed with it. I ever just signed up for the 4.00 a month version because I really believe in companies that are trying to do good thing. I also have a zoho account that has been my go-to account for a few years now. Very good and complete provider. I highly recommend both.

I've been using Zoho for over a year now. I really like and have no complaints. I have the free tier with my custom domain name.
Zohomail is great for individual users as well. Best are it’s keyboard shortcuts.
Zoho also provides alternatives to google drive and google docs sheets etc. I’ve completely moved from google to Zohomail.

I've moved out of Gmail as well, recently. I now have a custom domain and host my email on Zoho. I thought of self hosting it, but hosting on Zoho costs less than a dollar a month in India which is cheaper than renting a VPS. I also get a calendar, a mobile app etc. So it was a no-brainer for me. I don't care about their interface or ui since I use Thunderbird as my email client.

@ Lyle....I hated gmail because my internet speed is very slow. The gmail deal was extremely frustrating for me because of THAT! PEACE!
I looked at Proton mail security, and due to encryption no one could receive mail from me unless they also had similar set up. Glad to hear about Zoho.
I wanted to swap WA with Signal, but no one in my family wanted to change.
There are some very difficult issues to resolve, and maybe picking up the phone might be an accessible alternative.
Yeah I use Zoho too, speacially because they allow you to add custom domain to your mail for free.
Well, I just went ahead, learned a bit around dovecot and postfix, and since i run my own hosting service, i've just setup my own mailing service as well. x)

Proton and Zoho are my favorite.
I've been recommending Zoho to most of my clients, since it can upgrade to business and it is a pretty decent service.
The thing that sucked me into gmail in the first place was their awesome spam filtering. They have always been way better than even the commercial spam filtering solutions. They get pretty close to 100% of spam with (most importantly) no false positives.

Microsoft has pretty good filtering as well I find. They're probably good because they both have huge user populations to draw from as well as lots of money/resources.
Have been using Zoho for several years as my primary and secondary personal emails, with personal domain and their 3/m subscription using their EU based servers. Very happy.
I can handle the sales side , but message control and political power is unacceptable ! I have one legal vote and that is all , I do not have the billions to influence the direction of our country . They voided my small vote with overwhelming power . Sad to see what they have become . Pray for peace and the future of our country . I. T . please respect the people .

Probably the biggest problem with switching email providers is having to update all the hundreds of accounts to use the new ones and making sure you actually have all your mail from the previous account once it's killed.
14-ish years of Gmail makes me afraid of having to move :D
Yeah it's a bit tedious. I forwzrd d everything to the new mail, and updated each account individually as I received mail for it.

I'm leaning towards this solution. I moved to Gmail because of spam control. How are you dealing with all the spam?

How to deal with spam. Whitelists and blacklists. Prioritized mail inbox, regular mail and spam. That will sort itself out after a while.
I use ZOHO for my Nonprofit. I really like it and have started to move all my daily Google work to ZOHO. Now I pay for the service, but it is good stuff.
I heard Zoho is not as privacy centric.

Zoho mail is a great alternative to gmail. I used to a long time and is very useful.

I use email so rarely, and all mail I get are basically spam anyways, I keep my gmail. Otherwise, I've experimented with setting up my own VPS from DigitalOcean and installing a Dovecot + Postfix combo on it. If you are into tech, I totally recommend this route.

What does that cost?
Nah.. if your ip gets blacklisted then all your domains mail will go into spam and the setting up of DKIM and SPF also most of the time dont work. Although yiu can use protonmail they have implemented some good spam filter algo and also blocks any outgoing smtp requests within certain time interval so that your ip doesn't get blacklisted.
i think zoho provides overall balanced approach to personal/business mails in terms of privacy and features.
@@parihar-shashwat depends how you use it. I never got blacklisted. Most cost efficient solution. I do accept that it is not a solution for the masses

@@BluesGuitarCentral depends upon your level of tech savviness. Having your own DNS resolvers is also useful for privacy.
I do have 2 Gmail accounts for alternatives and as a fallback email client, but mainly I use Eudora and route all incoming mail thru my domain server. This has worked pretty well for the last couple of decades, and avoids having my email ogled by Google.
When you run the search engine, you can control the definition of words. "Don't do evil" describes what they do when "evil" is redefined as "privacy".
They actually removed the whole “don’t be evil” slogan. They don’t even hide the fact that they are anymore.
I would vote for Synology NAS, where you can run your own "cloud". It's pricey, but I think it's worth it, because everything is easy to configure via web interface. I'm running notes, drive, syncing photos from phone and other devices, audio library with streaming and mobile apps, documents similar to google docs. It has a mail server, but I need to rent static ip and domain in order to setup it correctly - that's what I'm planning to do!

Personally, I use Posteo which is a small mail provider located in Berlin and who is focused on privacy entirely.
They charge 1€ per month and have a very good service team that helps out whenever necessary.
Also they have 2FA which is awesome.

Tutanota is also a good option. Its based on Germany and Provides a very good service.
It provides 1 GB storage space for free users. You can add this one to your list

Ive used protonmail for a couple years now, I get on really well with it and the Linux bridge despite being beta works just as well as the Windows one

@@nemesisblack00 So tell me, have you ever hit "reply all" by mistake? Have any of your friends? It's a mistake that's real easy to do, even if you're a "security expert". And then the FULL THREAD goes to ALL those recipients, secrets and nude pics and all!
Now, some of those recipients might use and old mail protocol. Those are ..... UN-ENCRYPTED!!!! .... so it would be equal to posting the whole thread publicly on Facebook, for all your friends (and enemies) to see.
This is the single BIGGEST flaw with Protonmail, and it lies with the UI, and it lies with how E-mail is constructed. You just can't protect against stupid, and it's particularly easy to do stupid things while using Protonmail, so only use it for things that requires very low levels of security.
If you're in need of real security, use something else entirely. Signal is a step up, for instance, though it's not perfect either.

gmail's big advantage is that it's free. The downside is loss of privacy. If you're going to pay to get your privacy back, just get your own domain from a server farm. You can set up your own private email account with your own name (no convoluted names necessary to avoid using somebody else's name). Plus you can get enough storage and BW to start your own website. All for less than $5/month usually.

I bought huge space with a domain online and set up a mail client for a few dozen email addresses (plus forwarding). The host provided all the security. US$130 per year. Price probably reduced.
I use net-c, tutanota and vivaldi email, and all three are great. For me gmail interface is not nice or funcational at all. I am more for old style simple interface. And would reccomend any of these three to anyone who wants new and more private email.

@@Dakkaroni I am, but I plan to transition to Fastmail. I've been getting spam emails almost daily lately and Tutanota hasn't done well with detecting the spam to move them to my Spam folder. Many of those spam emails still go to my Inbox. Tutanota did advise they plan to roll out an update to improve their spam detection at some point. Outside of this issue, I have had no problems with Tutanota.

I heard that in order for any email provider to have a spam filter they have to be able to read your emails. I am not sure if that has anything to do with them having trouble filtering spam or how much of that is true.
Do you not use services like Simple login or Anonaddy to avoid the spam? Im surprised you have so much spam unless you don't use the mentioned services.

I've been reporting the spam to Tutanota and created email rules to help keep my Inbox free of spam, but it's just becoming too much to manage. I may just be a unique case. Thanks for the recommendation!
@@RadiantVaughn No problem. I plan on using one of them for all my bs emails likes newsletters, social media and other junk mail. If any of the emails I use gets compromised. I'll disable the forwarding, generate a new one on the fly while keeping my main email addresses with Tutanota exclusively with Bank accounts, family friends, crypto exchanges etc.
Your case does sound unique. Im glad you are going to look into SimpleLogin or Anonaddy. It will really really help you with spam.

Protonmail isnt fully open source ( the apps for example) however they are saying that they are working on that.
Also the android app uses some google things for notifications
Calendar is being worked on as well (so they say)

I'm a bit late and I blame UA-cam for it, but I wanted to say that "using google for notifications" is actually an inevitable fact of android's design. Please, don't bring false negatives onto world's one of most favorite providers.
Great video but you never mentioned the quality of spam filtering on the services you considered. This was the main reason I created a gmail address. Now I want to move for all the reasons you rightly outlined. Thanks 👍
Signed up for a net c account and sent an email to an email on my domain and it was filtered as spam? Not good.
Gmail is filtering the email of my bank. Good riddance.
Good video - Just to note: Zoho Mail has a Desktop Lite client for Windows, Mac, and Linux (AppImage). Zoho invests quite a bit in Linux, offering clients for SalesIQ, Mail, Docs (online storage sync) WorkDrive (another online storage sync for Team Drives - docs will roll up into this), and Assist (a remote desktop access for support). With Zoho, small businesses can make a much easier switch to Linux

Why not to pay for ddns and run your own email server.
If you want to keep really privet communication, begin to create random numbers tables and use a one pass tables to encrypt your communication.
I would strongly recommend you to use Tutanota, that is actually what I use. It is Open Source, has a great UI with mobile apps also available (desktop in beta), runs on 100% green energy and everything is encrypted and private. They have pretty cheap prices too in my opinion. It is based in Germany and is probably one of the best if not the best email solution out there 👍

I run my own mail server on a Digital Ocean VPS with Postfix and Courier IMAP. Took a while to get the spam control worked out but that's good now. For a Linux client I recently switched from Thunderbird to Evolution which is more actively maintained these days.
This gives me the control that I want.
I agree on self-hosting, but it will not be for all.

I use Protonmail. They have beta calendar now and it works well. The bridge works very well with my Apple Mail application on my Mac.

Protonmail has its limits, but its nice and secure and i have been using it with satisfaction.
But they really need a calendar portion of there app, since i still rely on Microsoft for my calendar.

I'm a Proton Mail user. I'm on a similar journey ... get rid of Google/Microsoft/... Only for e-mail... Proton mail does the trick right now and I'm good. But if I ever switch to a paid solution... I might go for a full cloud private email+ server.
Use a pocket diary and secure a pencil to it with a rubber band. Carry it in your pocket and no big tech company can trawl your diary to see what you are organising. Go low tech.
They put it a vote to users a few weeks ago that had Calendar as one of the options for "Things I'd like to see most in future updates". So they're clearly aware of it. I hope they get one out sooner rather than later.

I've been using Mailo for a couple of years now without any problems whatsoever. It does everything I need from an email company.

-Nextcloud, using a free provider (there are many). As you may know, this supports calendar, contacts, mail, documents, file syncing and more. There are many affordable storage plans too depending on the provider.

I am using protonmail too. While you need I paid account to use IMAP&STMP, you are not sticked to Thunderbird. I use Protonbridge with Evolution and Mutt.
I switched to Protonmail a few months back. Very happy with it, especially as I can set the background to be a naked lady.

Personally, I like the Proton Mail/Thunderbird combination on my Linux box. Proton Mail's app on my phone works great but its nothing flashy and they are integrating a secure calendar into the mix now. I think I'll stick with them since they are on the move.
The perk about Protonmail is that it's based in Switzerland, little better privacy laws then my country.

Disroot is a good all in one: email, calendar, storage, cloud, and social media (via Diaspora). For just email, protonmail and tutanota are good.

Nearly everyone in my family uses Protonmail.
There is a Calendar with the premium, btw. Not sure if they are not going to open it for everyone soon.

In the ecosystem, utopia sending messages in P2R mode, files are encrypted and fragmented, this is a very reliable scheme. I have been using it for a year and appreciated the reliability of the project.

I use mailbox.org which, similar to Zoho, provides a full suite including Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Files. I personally only use Mail and use my own Nextcloud instance for everything else

I think the web-mail looks clean, but if you don't you could use IMAP/POP3 for your mail clients.
Every time i change computers gmail locks my account and wont let me back in. I have had enough and i now i use proton mail.
same here and I don't think it is really for our safety. i think it is about tracking our movements. If it was about our privacy/safety, they could ask for both a password or pass phrase and a security question - instead of phone and email verification. it is the phone verification that pisses me off the most - esp. when some buildings/co. discourage having your phone out.

I ended up with 3y azure lease for VM for 6$month, directadmin 20$ per year and free outgoing 3rd party smtp server cause all cloud operators are filtering outgoing smtp 25. Dunno why i didn’t do it before. Outlook client not that good as google was. But honestly, - lets wait and maybe another open source client will come. I hate the bat btw )). Forgot to mention. Domain name plus 10buck for year and my 20years long it experience:-)))
