Sean Baker's Palme d'Or winner ANORA is an audacious, thrilling, and comedic variation on a modern day Cinderella story. Mikey Madison (ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD) captivates as Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets and impulsively marries Vanya, the impetuous son of a Russian billionaire. However, when Vanya's parents catch wind of the union, they send their henchmen to annul the marriage, setting off a wild chase through the streets of New York.

#anora
Everyone’s face when Anora said it’s so nice to be a part of this family ☠️☠️
0:53 He’s the best reaction lol
Vanya actor is so good, he kicks it out of the park in portraying a spoiled childish brat
МАРК ЭЙДЕЛЬШТЕЙН УРАААА
He literally does a small child's body language and movements throughout the movie. And sliding across his floors when Anora first comes to his house. That's how I got around my house as a kid.
Even his mother is a childish brat
@@palomasaudios2676 well she's the main reason he turned out like this. Raising a child is very time and energy consuming - if you want to raise them good, of course. You have to deal with all the childish stuff, guide them, be supportive, when needed - strict. And it's not something you can just buy. She seems to care more about what the newspapers write about their family then about the lifestyle her son actually has. They hug - but there is no connection between them - she rather call hired strangers to tell her about how her son's doing instead of staying in touch with him, calling and talking to him.
This is actually a very sad but common situation, but you see it quite often among star's and rich ppl's children.
Vanya is soooo good. Why is he not nominated?
The fact that she didn’t slap the shit out of him is beyond me, but props to her for accepting reality and moving on.
I love the amount of empathy Yuriv Borisov was able to express through his character. The way he turned away at 0:50 when Anora said she's happy to be part of their family as if he was the one expected to be slapped in the face shows how much his character cares about and empathize with Anora and the brutal reception he knows she is going to get from Vanya's mother.
He says so much without words.
Vanya/Ivan is such a spoiled brat. When his mother hugs him from his seat, he looks like a tiny baby hugging his mom from the ground. He runs around Vegas and marries a woman on a whim because he thinks he’s all grown up. But when his family comes barging back, he reverts back into a child.
That’s the reality. Spoiled brats in Russia are especially bad, even worse than spoiled brats from U.S.
Vanya is still just 21. Yes an adult but still very much a kid who clearly is spoiled but out of his depth. I think only people in that are younger then late 20s fail to realize how young 21 is. Your literally not even a half a decade from being a teenager.
Anora was silly to believe this fantasy but again she was young as well.
Exactly
The way the mom winks at Igor, seems like his family was destroyed/is controlled by her too
We badly need a sequel so we can see Galina get her much-deserved comeuppance and her life and reputation completely destroyed.
Anyone who hasn't seen this movie, you're missing so much on the beauty of filmmaking. Mikey Madison is phenomenal here. Bravo!
I've seen this movie at least 6 or 7 times now and have found so much more to appreciate with every viewing. Such a fantastic movie
This scene is so depressing.
Gut punch to say the least
The last half-hour goes beyond depressing.
It is so emotionally draining. But, I think the turn helps the film to become mature, much like its protagonist and that’s why this film works.
It doesn’t make that much sense tho. Why is Anora shocked that Vanya’s parents are dismissive to her? She already knows they want the marriage annulled
@ She was in a fantasy, that she could still appeal their “marriage”. Galina (Vanya’s mother) was very frank that she does not approve of this and her cold attitude trumps everyone’s beliefs. Even, trying to get Vanya to talk, she was in a state of desperation to have their relationship “valid”. It was his words that “Anora” knew this marriage was over.
Unfortunately, as “Anora” doesn’t have much legal support (especially as she didn’t sign a prenup) nor another option, it doesn’t matter because if she walked away from Vanya’s parents, she would’ve lost everything. She was in a place of intimidation where either path would make her feel small.
@@shinycheeto5779 In the end, however her words won over Vanya’s wealth. She may not be relieved yet, but the world may never look at the spoiled son and the ruthless, disgusting mother the same way.
And maybe, that’s enough to change the world.
I find it awkward and unnatural, that`s probably the weakest point of the script.
This scene is so sad, she’s so desperate for a family
did you not get the point of this movie or something?? she’s not desperate because she wants a family lmao. she wants upward class mobility! she wants to be raised out of the material conditions she was born into. she has a family already lol she lives with her sister.
@@brunobucciarati7278 estão romantizando esse filme, essa só quer o bilhete premiado.
@@brunobucciarati7278to be fair the movie doesn’t do a good job of showing what Anora wants. She obviously swept up in the lavish lifestyle but the film also wants u to think that Anora has genuine feelings for Vanya. She only has 2 brief scenes with her sister anyways. And it doesn’t look like the most loving sibling relationship.
@@shinycheeto5779It really didn’t. She didn’t even tell her sister she was leaving for week until the day of.
@ the movie does not want you to think she has genuine romantic feelings for vanya. i mean, yes, she is charmed by him, she thinks he’s cute and funny at first. but she is not in love with him and the film does not expect the audience to think she is. what she wants is upwards social mobility, just like any working class person anywhere. the film doesn’t need to go out of its way to tell us that because it’s a pretty universal desire and we are able to infer it by seeing her material conditions and her situation
Ugh, Vanya... I loved Igor behind her during the scene.
Ani choosing to use her birth name over her preferred name really said a lot about how she knew she was going to be perceived by Ivan's parents, which is pretty sad.
The lack of empathy that Vanya and his family show Ani echoes the common sentiment that the general public has towards sex workers, or just low-income women in general.
Women in sex work don’t deserve empathy or support because they’re “dirty” or “swindlers” who take advantage of poor men who just can’t control themselves, who can’t help but throw bills on these women. Which is a very ridiculous notion, and yet it prevails to this day.
Ani wasn’t even the one who proposed the idea of marriage, she wasn’t the one who pursued him, and she wasn’t the one who even chose him at the club she worked at, her boss did it for her because Vanya wanted a girl who spoke Russian. She indulged Vanya because he kept hiring her and asking for her, and she only did her job by taking the money and giving him what he wanted. Because she’s a sex worker.
I can’t blame her for allowing herself to give into the fairytale that Vanya offered her, because he was extremely adamant on keeping her close to him and telling her that he really likes her. He even told her that they would have a good time even if he wasn’t rich. Vanya having to convince Ani that they should get married showed how guarded she was. She laughed his proposal off multiple times!
So of course it was crushing to her that it was all just some game to Vanya. She finally allowed herself to believe in the Cinderella story she always dreamt of. And having to come to terms with her own naivety and face Vanya’s family’s cruelty as well was just another gut punch. She thought she finally found her happily ever after but it was just some rich boy’s last party in America.
Just finished watching the the full movie, the one part that sticks with me the most is immediately after the papers are signed and his family will obviously never see or have nothing more to do with Ani, Igor steps up and says that the rotten little sun owes Ani an apology for also putting her through all this bs. It’s a small gesture that if genuine goes a long way, but of course they are not going to give one and just laugh at that statement. Igor believes they at least owe her that.
And Galina and Vanya should both have apologised to Ani. Yet their cruel, heartless egos wouldn’t allow them to say sorry to her. Galina should be in jail.
Anora is one of those people who cannot read a room.
I felt like Vanya's mother was a little too much of a cartoon villain. She kind of changed the reality of the film. But I loved this film anyway.
Being Eastern European and having met quite a few Russians, she's pretty fucking realistic. Also, it really adds to the conflict/comedy. The way Anora says, "Mam... Um, mam!" had me in stitches.
@@blackforest825 it's not about her being russian, there's just people like that
You know, as Russian, I can say, that at first I had the same feelings about Galina, but after couple of weeks of analyzing I changed my mind. She really is very accurate in this role. She is a wife of a very powerful man, and if she managed to stay with him during all this time, she should have that "thing" in her - for him to see her as equal. So she has to be cruel. Which makes her... well smthing very close to cartoon villian) hope I said evetything right and my English is understandable))
@@themoonshade English is perfect. Thanks - very interesting point of view :-)
I wish Galina was a cartoon villain. Unfortunately, she is very realistic.
This movie is so heartbreaking. A lot of people think the film is shallow and Ani is just some skanky gold-digger, but that's not the case at all... Sure, she loved the riches & luxury that Vanya provided, who wouldn't? But deep down underneath Ani's tough Brooklyn "boss babe" exterior was a little girl who desperately wanted to be swept up off her feet & feel like a princess. In her naivety & poor judgment, she allowed herself to be played & eventually steamrolled by a "prince" who ended up being nothing more than a careless spoiled rotten man-child.
The signs that Vanya was immature were there all along, but Ani was determined to ignore them so she could live out her Cinderella fantasy. Only to watch it all crumble apart as the harsh realities of social hierarchy ultimately win in the end, and she's forced to just succumb to the family's demands and walk away like nothing happened.
For Vanya, this was nothing. It was all just a fun little game & Ani was a toy for him to play with. He's going to move on with his life and forget about it. But for Ani... this sort of thing could result in a level of distrust & trauma that I can't even fathom. I know it's just a movie, but my heart really hurt for her while watching this.
Well said 👏 Honestly, I'm pretty sure anyone who only sees Ani as a senseless gold digger just lacks empathy.
This is a story that is unfortunately all too common in SW. You have to sell people a fantasy, well, sometimes they play along for a while. It does honestly leave you with trust issues for the rest of your life. You have to actively remind yourself never to believe what is said to you or what you yourself must say convincingly. When the most intimate moments in life between people become either a transaction or a game, nothing is sacred anymore.
One of the many fascinating things about this movie is that out of all the characters throughout the film, it's Igor, the henchman for Vanya's family, who's the only one who treats Ani with genuine respect or decency. Even after all the fighting, insulting, and belittling towards him, he still goes out of his way to support, comfort, and stand up for her, all without asking or expecting anything in return. He treats her better in 2 days than Vanya ever did in 2 weeks.
To him, she's a human being who made a mistake and was thrown into an abusive, chaotic situation. To everyone else, she's just a whore to either look down on or disregard when she's no longer useful.
Yes, that’s true, I also think that this movie is perfectly shows how trauma is developing… normally any person after such ubuse will have at least a toxic shame throughout the life I guess…
This movie is so good!! Mikey is amazing and gorgeous in this movie!!
garnik so adorable 🥹 guy just needs a hug and a rest
I like to think they just left him sleeping in the annulment office.
Same, My friends were drooling for Igor and I was for Garnick and Toros
Worse, Sean Baker points out in the Variety scene breakdown that he's a recovering alcoholic... and this entire day made him fall off the wagon. If you watch the party scene you'll notice he has a water bottle; on the plane he gets pretty shit faced.
@@YouCantDeleteDenzelL typical baker tragic-comedy there. I hadn’t noticed before 😆 poor dude.
He also mentioned in that interview, about subverting stereotypes and making Garnik a ‘teddy bear’ 💀 💜
I’d love to see it again.
@@Rashomon20s he definitely seems like one for sure. Toros is my favourite character but Garnik is that "lovable dope" that you can't help but feel for.
Easily my favourite Garnik moment is when Toros is clutching at straws to try to think of the things Ani would be arrested for and he effortlessly yells out "ASSAULT" without any hesitation and such hilarious vitriol in his voice over getting kicked in the head by Ani. I always laugh uncontrollably every time at that scene because he delivery is so perfect 🤣
SPOILERS: The movie starts out as a love story between Ani and Vanya, but as the second half progresses, the true love story is between Ani and Igor. The marketing and poster were not wrong, it’s just that the love story is anything but conventional. Ani finally discovers true, tender, authentic love, yet doesn’t know how to process it. But like Moonie and her “Magic Kingdom” at the end of The Florida Project, who knows what the future could bring for Ani and possibly Igor too.
This scene is so emotional and sad, and then I saw the behind-the-scenes for this GHSJSJSK I love Galina when she’s out of character
Where did you see the behind the scenes?
Wait where did you see the bts for this? I'm dying to know
i wish 75% of this film wasnt about “finding vanya” cause this part was actually interesting
It was intended to be that way cause they see Ani as an object and not the main character. Somewhat parallel to how most people see workers in sex industry as objects
@ thats what my friend said i still disagree, i wanted to a story about ANORA , i wouldve preferred the “wheres vanya” bit to be cut in half and add more to anoras storyline after vanya leaves america
Yeah that was my biggest issue with the film. That section of the film was funny but dragged on too long. I also would’ve liked a few less party scenes at the beginning.
I liked it but movie couldve been way better
Dont say anything, don't give away anything, just walk away silent the entire way to a lawyer.
For what purpose? Vanya had zero money, he was dependent on his parents for $$.
She wasn't married to his parents. Sue for half of NOTHING ?
😂
Night butterfly. That was the part of scare me for anora
This is an idiom in Russian used for sex workers. It’s nothing special
Not gonna lie I actually kinda feel for the parents. Remember: Ani (and the audience) may not realize what Vanya is like, but they do. What they see is a guy who's basically still a child and a girl who either bought into his latest game or is taking advantage of him by playing along and milking him for all he's worth. And we can't really blame them for assuming the latter and acting accordingly.
shes literally threatening to kill a poor (financially) young womans family friends all possessions because she married her son. this is not acting accordingly
@@elasiaval904 after she threatened to take half of what the family owns
there’s no way you’re going to assume the parents have less power here. She also can’t take half of what they own because she would need a litigator and she won’t afford one as strong as theirs. I mean she could try but all for what, the potential to lose the little she has and become homeless?
They’re not victims being ployed against a gold digger. They’re greedy nobles that have no respect for her. So in this scene she is reclaiming it and its a big deal because she’s doing it with class and grace unlike the the parents you would have expected it from.
She was not milking him. She wanted a family..... she had no other motives.
@@pradagorl ofc she has no chance against them in court, but if she does it will be a big hassle so the mom wants to scare Ani to shut the very possibility down
This is so exciting, I want to see more.
Legally speaking, did Anora actually have a chance at getting some money out of the divorce? I always thought it was still very much worth pursuing and that Anora gave up on it too quickly.
@leonkuwata4510 I totally agree. Ani should have proceeded with the divorce proceedings anyway, not agreed to the annulment. Then she should have gotten a lifetime protective order against Galina so the egotistical, power-hungry egomaniac can’t do a damn thing to her.
I think she could’ve but the risk was too great
This film perfectly encapsulates what it's like to date men in the 21st century
Vanya is the worst character, he is prétentious, immature, selffish
Igor is lovely, kind, think to the other and not to hisself and just want to help Anora because he love her
Galina’s worse, trust me. I’d put Vanya at second worst behind her.
She was clearly motivated by money and not family from the start. She was never in love with him. I interpreted her breaking down at the end as being because she had a glimpse into this lifestyle that was not meant for her or people like her.
This movie is so f effective. Sean Baker really put some good jush in it.
Great ensemble! Fabulous movie!!!
“Ma’am 🤨”
I hate Vanya but props to the actor. He did a Good job 👏👍
Sex workers are not skanks, sluts or whores. They are legit human beings and they deserve as much respect and kindness as the rest of us. People really need to treat sex workers with more respect.
Lawyers of UA-cam. Does Anora have a case and is there any way she could've sued them and won?
Nope, not really. Not married long enough & under disability. But even if she did sue, think about it: Vanya was dependent on his parents' money. He had no money of his own. He had no job, nothing titled in his name. Half of nothing is Zero. She can't sue his parents, she wasn't married to them.
Man what did anora expect, she knew what he was to her just as he knew what she was to him. A even swap ain’t a swindle
She would get a good deal on that divorce
Vanya had no money of his own. She was married to a penniless man dependent on his billionairr parents for his allowance. Last time we checked, half of ZERO is ZERO 😂😂😂
Please lord let Anora and Igor live happily ever after. The director won't allow it but I really hope so.
How it should play out Oscar night:
Lead Actress: Mikey
Lead Actor: Chalamet
Supporting Actor: Clukin
Supporting Actress: Grande
(Objectively, have seen all nominees except Fernanda Torres)
I get the feeling they're going to give best actress to Demi Moore.
@@regress-c3t Me too. And it's so undeserving because she's not even in half the movie, and when she is, she's under thick layers of make-up. I also don't think she was particularly overdo since her filmography was pretty lackluster. Acting wise, Mikey deserved it more.
@@blackforest825Demi Moore deserves the Oscar but I would be happy if Mikey won. Horror performances never get recognition.
@@dirtydinner6463 Horror performance never get recognition but that is no reason for Moore to win. She is only better than the dude they got nominated in the Lead Actress category.
@ I agree with this! It's very much Mikey > Erivo > Moore > Gascon (Torrest I haven't seen). The amount of work Erivo had to put in over the course of how many years........ She deserves more attention than Demi, and certainly Gascon who gave a flat-out terrible performance.
This mother is worst than every horror characters
The mom was a little too over the top, evil villain for me in that plane scene. Didn’t seem very realistic compared to the rest of the movie
The movie is satirical at times, and it's built like a perverse fairytale, so I suspect the villainy of the mother reflects that.
Nah she's just Russian.
Well ppl like this do exist.
disagree she fits the tone of the movie perfectly. watch the entire film and it works.
@ If Sean Baker liked it then it’s probably the right choice. Just the way she was smiling while telling Anora she will lose everything was just so crazy to me lol
Anora was super naive thinking this so called Marriage was even gonna work out . 😂
He was spoiled
Immature
Lazy
He didn't even have any money of his own , it was all his parents' money, so if they were to cut him off 🤷 BOOM, nothing.
She would have to provide, and that would be the end of the marriage
Galina is the sole reason why I’m not keen on seeing this movie. I really do want to see it, but Galina is so heartless to the point that it puts me off from seeing it. Ani should have told Galina to get fucked and proceeded with the divorce proceedings anyway, not agreed to the annulment. Galina’s all talk, but what exactly can she do to Ani? NOTHING! She’s probably going to go to jail for years if she harasses Ani and proceeded with her threat to destroy her life. Galina is the sole reason why I won’t see this movie, which really is a shame because I really wanted to see this movie for Mikey Madison’s performance.

He's so hot
ngl i didn't like the movie, it was a child act
CAN YOU PUT A NOTE IN YOUR TITLE THAT THIS IS A SPOILER.
I never watched this movie. I watched half your clip up to the guy saying he has to get a divorce and realised you've spoiled a plot line.. so didn't watch any further..
I looked up the trailer and realised yea YOUVE RUINED THE WHOLE TRAILER AND MOVIE .
Are you crying now? Boohooo😢
are you insane it is literally a scene from the movie what did you expect?
No you spoiled yourself. Has nothing to do with the uploader. No one to blame but yourself for watching “half of a clip of a movie I’ve never seen”
It clearly said it was a movie clip, what a whiny embarrassing comment
This movie totally fell flat and was so disappointing. I’m shocked that it has the amount of praise that it does.
Can someone explain to me why the mother winked at Igor from the plane steps when she was threatening Ani???
I think she was lying, that's why she winked at him. She just wanted to scare anora
I think she wanted to show him how evil she is
I'm Russian and I can explain. She winked at Igor because Igor is a handsome man. Russian women love young men.
Joking or not
You don’t fuck with a mom that’s protecting her son ( in her mind )
Also.. he’s from a very rich powerful family
maybe that's the reason why he was the gofer for this family. he just wants to keep his grandmother's legacy alive
Дак это ж мамаша Бернарделли. Вылитая.
the whole i will destroy you is flat as hell.. sorry.
Mom is a terrible actress and the dialogue is too cheesy.
You've never met this kind of ppl. They talk exactly like that. Sometimes you even ask yourself if it's for real and they are not kidding. Sadly, they're not.
Have you met rich russian immigrants? they are all like that. I'm a poor russian immigrant, I saw this

It’s going to win big at the Oscars.
Актриса ,играющая мамашу, переигрывает. Единственный персонаж, на мой взгляд, плохо сыгранный.
