There are always some crazy matches in Paris when a French is playing. Gasquet’s comeback in the third set was special, he played amazing, obviously the crowd support helped him a lot and Paul was struggling to find his rhythm. But Gasquet got super tight in the end and couldn’t make the last step. Tennis is brutal and beautiful.
The French crowds are the WORST in tennis. No one actually likes having to contend with them. One of the main reasons RG/FO is considered the runt of the Slams. Paul's win serves them right for such interference.
@@got2bjosh😂
@@got2bjoshyes, very true. It was the same with the recent Rugby World Cup in France. Anyone who played the French National team really got the brunt from the delirious crowd.
The problem is Paul who is a shit to allow an old ex player like Gasquet to arrive so close to defeat him. Unbelievable how bad is Paul
@@MrMercury82 I was very frustrated with Paul as well, but he gets a pass this time because he won despite that insane crowd.
Seeing Gasquet celebrating points was awesome, he is normally so reserved. Love watching him play 😊
It´s his home and maybe his family were there to watch
Of all the players being around the top the game in their late 30s, I really didn’t expect Gasquet to be among them. Hats off.
Why?
It was expected if you knew how Gasquet started his career. He was a junior superstar, everyone expected him to have a huge rivalry with Federer, etc. That kind of talent didn't translate into slams (as it doesn't for so many) and he didn't make much of a dent in the Big 3 at all, but he was always a fantastic player.
Novak is in his 30s, I don’t think Gasquet is better than him. Get your tennis facts right
@@michaelpham6379 Read better. How does my comment suggest that Gasquet is better than Djokovic or the best of those still around in their late 30s?
@@No_co_OK Just seemed like a party guy, someone who was good at tennis but maybe didn't love it that much. I'm just surprised that he continues to grind it out, year after year.
incredible these 37/ 38 yr olds can play at world class level. amazing gasquet. good job paul.
I don't usually cheer for American player, but Tommy I like him, he is the better version of all American boy!!
incredible display by Tommy! Will always be 1 of my favorites to watch
We can all see the importance of home advantage it lifts a player to push and play better than their capacity. This is why Novak is exceptional he always play against the best versions of every player and comes out on top
What a match! Gasquet is 37 and still able to compete against the best ones
Tommy Paul fait partie des meilleurs maintenant!?🤣🤣🤣
@@lassdesas2063ouai il fait partis des joueurs les plus solides du circuit, mais faut regarder le tennis pour le savoir 😅
@@lassdesas2063he is bozo
@@lassdesas2063 Tommy Paul donne des cauchemars à Alcaraz à chaque fois qu'ils se rencontrent, et en plus il est top 15, donc on peut dire qu'il fait partie des meilleurs.
you gotta admit this was the best weve seen him in this year at least.
let's give some credits to Paul for having nerves of steel ! Well done to Gasquet ! Damn 36 years olds still out there able to play at incredible level. Insane stuff !
I was watching it live. Gasquet put all his soul to revert that 2x5 down just to choke it when he was 6x3 up in the tiebreak. 😅
Sad, French players have no mental game
@@docteurgillesalewina5669💯💯💯
Sadly true
it was his psyche protecting his aging body from another few rounds on this physical level ;)
@docteurgillesalewina5669 Sure, yet Gasquet is at the top level of tennis for 2 decades...
It’s quite incredible that Murray, Wawrinka, Gasquet, all in their late 30s, played outstanding and close matches. Didn’t quite get the win but impressive!
Both gave it all! Great match!
What a match! Gasquet had an opportunity but choked in front of the French crowd :(
What a rollercoster. But what a double on match point. Choking both of them but someone must win..
Paul was shook by the biased crowd, but he hung in there & asked the question of Gasket who was unable to seal the deal himself. Whew!
that crowd was insane hahaha
Absolutely ridiculous. The French umpire did the bare minimum, but after a while once Gasket started to come undone again, even he had to step back in & ask for silence.
@@got2bjosh The French were just showin love. I loved the crowd being so into this match, absolutely electric.
@@samvu4133 Nah, they were desperate to keep a French player in the tournament & tried to force Gasket over the line with their cheers, but it just became too distracting for both players. Now, it's only Fils & not for long.
...and Monfils and Umbert. Gasquet was just a warm up for the crowd !
the umpire was British, not French... super strong accent when speaking French@@got2bjosh
What a thrilling match! Every bit as entertaining as Medvedev vs Sinner in Vienna yesterday. I had bet Paul to win as part of my 9-leg accumulator bet. When he went 5-2 ahead in the final set, I cashed out my bet as the bookie offered me nearly full price winnings on my bet at that point in the match. Thank god I did cash out then, because it would have been torture watching Gasquet claw his way back from the dead and almost win against all the odds and me nearly losing my money. Btw, Gasquet must be absolutely gutted; even if Paul had lost that match, I doubt he'd have felt as crestfallen as Gasquet must have felt when he lost. Absolutely tragic for Gasquet, especially as it was in front of his home crowd.
Matches like that aren't good for my blood pressure! Way to go Tommy and the beard is looking good >:-)
Tommy Paul DESPERATELY needs to switch back to the Wilson Blade! The vcore doesn't work for his stroke style at all, he can't hit through the ball at all.
down the line backhand from Gasquet is PURE ART
Electric crowd 🤯🔥 INCREDIBLE ATMOSPHERE. PARIS MASTERS I LOVE YOU ❤😢
That crowd was SHAMELESS. That kind of biased energy was TOO distracting & precisely why both players had trouble closing out the match. Glad Paul won, if only because I don't agree with cheering for player's faults/errors.
That crowd was typically Paris, typically French, rude and without any tennis culture! They booed even, when the umpire asked to respect both players.
Not just the ending - the match was crazy: 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) after having 5*-2 and then trailing 3-6 in the breaker.
Love watching Gasquet ❤
Blew a gasket, serving a double fault on matchpoint
Sounds more like Zverev
man when richard was 6-5 up I literally said to myself that he was gunna double fault lmaoo, dude is one of the biggest chokers in the history of tennis. sad but true
Another one of those legendary players from Federer's "prime".
The crowd became TOO involved & distracting for both players. It just added to the pressure both were feeling. Paul's win serves them right for not allowing the players to focus better.
And here you are commenting on someone who will Never know of your existence while he lives out your dream…. Weirdo
@@sleepyjoe8394don’t tell me you disagree with 2004-2007 being Federers prime?
@@Gilgarth if by “Federer’s prime” you mean “the weakest era in tennis history” then yes.
Well done Tommy 👏❤️
In spite of that SHAMELESS French crowd!
A lot of 'choking' happening today for the old-timers--first Murray and now him!
So sad for that df on mp😢
It wasn't on match point. The TB scoreline was 6 all.
@@got2bjosh no it wasnt. it clearly says 6-5
Omg Josh was proven wrong 😱
@@koolpikle999 I watched the match not just some highlights. The poster said it was match point... but not for Paul! The match was ALWAYS on his racket. Not gonna lie, I am SO glad he won. That shameless crowd had it coming.
@@josep9599 Lol! I don't mind being wrong about lots of things, but it wasn't match point for Paul & that's what REALLY mattered! Serves them right!
Tommy Paul should play on senior tour
This crowd was awful
Thank you! In the end, their behavior bit them in the butt, so it all worked out.
French people love tennis and show their support to their fellow countrymen ! Stadium is full for a 1st round match . What's wrong with that ? You prefer empty seats at Indian Wells or Shanghai and no atmosphere ? Not sure Paul doesn't like fighting against this hostile crowd. Well done to him anyway even if I'm gutted for Gasquet who played so well at the end (except for the double on MP !)
Not as awful as uso
Gasquet really just loves to choke a big match point doesn't he?
Goddamnit Gasquet.
Gasquet blew a gasket
I see that from Paris there is a tradition showing ONLY last set.
I know the ATP really wants people to get excited about tennis but encouraging this kind of crowd behaviour is just wrong. When it becomes about trying to give your player an unfair advantage by disrupting play endlessly for the opponent it's over the line. The 'loud shushing' stuff, shouting during points, rapturous applause after a missed serve and interrupting serve tosses... There needs to be no tolerance for it. The behaviour that Fritz got at the FO for daring to beat a Frenchman was disgusting, they booed through his entire interview. Insane that this is allowed.
I agree. Was there last night and it was terrible. I felt so bad for Tommy, he was noticeably affected by it but didn't say anything. Even kept serving through the screams.
....I was undecided: For Gasquet, AGAINST the french crowd....
Imagine the money you'd have made if you had predicted this scoreline. 😅
Attaboy tommy!!
It was just a first round match but sad for Richie 😢
Classic Richard
Wow. Crazy fight. Tommy needs to play like he did at the end in the beginning. Too many lapses in energy. Great comeback win though.
Okay, so tommy lost the first two opening service games in the first set and probably said "okay, I've got to let this set go" and ended up getting bageled. He improves his game to take the 2nd set and carries the momentum all the way to a 5-2 lead in the decider, then suddenly, he starts getting tight with the Parisian crowd sensing it and giving their man all the push he needed. Somehow, someway, Gasquet had to throw away 3MPs. What a roller coaster game it was.
Gasquet in Francia ha 18 anni
Best Crowd ever
Bas mi je zao, toliko se borio!🥺
As usual the French spectators pulled all of their tricks out of their cheating toolbox, yelling and caterwauling every time Gasquet made a point or Tommy Paul made a mistake like a bunch of school-kids on a Friday night in 1999. All credit to Tommy Paul for handling himself well, notwithstanding a couple of hiccups, to get the job done. Gasquet also played well but I feel his performance was downplayed by the fact the crowd was clearly biased against Paul.
idk for some reason it hurts more when gasket losses.
@2:49 I was indifferent with either winning, but to shout like that just before the serve on MP is unacceptable and wrong on so many levels!
This is the same at Roland Garros. This is France
Aaaaaaaaand Tommy Paul wins the choke-off congrats Tommy!
Always a strange scoreline when someone loses a match after a 6-0 set.
Oh so sorry Gasquet
Not sure what was worse. Paul choking the final set from serving at 5:2 or gasquet blowing the tiebreak
Paul getting distracted by letting the crowd into his head was worse because it was SO unnecessary. You need to be able to recognize what they were doing & block it out mentally. He let that mess go on for FAR too long & had to dig his way out of a 3-6 deficit in the TB. If Paul had lost that match, because of crowd interference, I would'v been SO pissed. It would've underscored why Shelton is the future of US men's tennis. Glad Fritz & Pul pulled through even though neither will win Paris.
@got2bjosh honestly very surprised by shelton today. Especially when he took the set in the way that he did I was expecting fokina to repeat his game with zverev from a few weeks back when he won the first set tiebreak and then got rinsed. But otherwise if shelton continues the way that he does he defo is the future of us tennis. Paul is a solid player on his day but not a top dog, don't rate fritz whatsoever and korda for me is pure hype. People sleeping on the fact he's 3 or 4 years older than shelton
@@isrln Shelton's serve wasn't there today & his Tennis IQ was way off. Even he remarked that he was making all the wrong choices. It's in my summary. Shelton knew he was given garbage draws at both Vienna & Paris. If he'd won against Farina, Shelton would've had to face You-Know-Who next & he's not ready yet. The European tournament directors didn't want to see Shelton make a deep run at their tournaments & he knew it. Losing early just sets him up to get ready for Next Gen Jeddah.
@got2bjosh yh today's game doesn't give his recent form justice. Think we can all agree that you know who is essentially in the final already, as for the other finalist, not sure. Depends on the fitness of alcaraz, even he said he's not back at 100%
@@got2bjosh lol as if he has any tennis IQ. His main thing is a serve. Wearing his opponents out with it
Fédération française de la loooooooooooooose 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
gasquet should have retired right there. this is gonna be the best mood hes going to be able to put any crowd in. he looked completely spent and he probably was.
Double faulting on match point is so careless. You expect better from a professional
Lost 2000 euros on gasquet I’m under the blankets I can’t get up :s this is the first time I went back to rewatch how how ?? For the love of god how gasquet I can’t make next months rent Pftt how
Shame wish Gasquet would've won it. Have no clue how Paul is 12.
Gasquet has one of the worst forehand in the tour and he's done nothing to improve it 😢
Gasquet choked hard
mon Ritchie 😪😪
Sad at that comeback and to throw it away.
That "comeback" was built of the sands of a biased crowd. It was never real, true, & sustainable. In the end, the crowd was such a distraction, it put too much pressure on both players & Gasket became unstuck first.
noway he lose like that🤣🤣
🤬
Gasquet was a loser n now u guys know y, he mentally weak n Than there's djokovic who stops federer who is serving 4 the match in wimbledon
Says some nobody on internet with no self awareness
@Nat-oj2uc I have facts n u have opinion, saw a similar gasquet match n many more where he choked. U urself have 2b a choker 2 not even understand my objectiveness dumass
Purposeful Parisian partisanship provided the bad karma necessary to negate Gasket’s pesumptive seal of victory on the 3rd set. That's what you get for undue influence! Tommy Paul wins for USA 0-6 6-2 7-6 (8-6) in just over 2hrs despite eating a french bagel, losing a 5-2 lead in the 3rd set, & enduring a nerve-wracking tiebreak. In the 3rd set, the French crowd got real extra & the match became super shady. Brad Stein was a mess! “He’s starting to feel it. Make him feel old…There’s a microphone right here!” This is why no one actually likes playing the French Open. The French are the most difficult crowd in tennis. They will REALLY test your nerve, patience, & mental fortitude. Paul was very diplomatic in his interview, but only because he managed to win by the thinnest strands of his new haircut. My, what a match!
The French crowd is difficult until third round, when they usually lose their last man standing :)
Maybe Arthur Fils has a potential to go further, but probably not this year. I don’t think he can beat Fritz who will want to prove himself after bad losses to low ranked players, plus it’s his last chance to fight for Turin.
@@patrikmarflak6559 Fritz is sick & a bit injured from coughing too much. He's fortunate not to have blown his 6-1 4-2 lead & won in his match in the end. All he had to do is take a cough suppressant & maybe an expectorant if it's a chest cold. We'll see what happens next round. Glad he was able to pull through despite the physical injury.
@@got2bjosh Well, it's a walkover for his opponent today. What a shame. Didn't know he was ill. Seems like only Hurkacz can challenge Rune for the last spot in ATP finals.
@@patrikmarflak6559 After losing Tokyo 1st round to Zheng & the Basel final to FAA, Hubi did NOT want to risk 3 sets with Korda. He looked SO exasperated & tired after losing the 2nd set tiebreak (6-8). He collapsed onto the barrier & the towel box in front of his team, before heading off to the bathroom. Returned & fought to win the 1st & 3rd sets comfortably, 6-3 6-3, in 128mins.
@@got2bjosh I thought Korda would beat him, so this is still a better result than expected. But I don’t think he will go far.
LOL French fans...Fritz and now Paul. They're lucky they aren't all speaking German thanks to US.
Another choke from a Frenchman...double fault on own match point jeez! Monfils had done just that in the 2016 Rio Olympics
After losing 6:0 set, unbelievable
The match was ALWAYS on Paul's racket. He just needed to get out of his head & hit the darn ball. Whenever Paul managed to block out the crowd & play with confidence & freedom, he won, including the match itself.
I don't think I've ever seen Gasque so fired up... just to choke it.
Lol common man he is a 🍟
@UNIQUEOI and you are?...a nobody.
He should have seen him against Nadal at Monte-Carlo 2005 or Murray at Wimbledon 2008
Tommy needed that win, he has some points to protect in this tournament.
He needed that win to take the crowd out of the equation. Serves them right!
All of this to lose next match, easily 😂
@@MrMercury82 At that point, it wasn’t even about winning the tournament. It was about the principle of tennis decorum. The crowd tried to influence the outcome for themselves instead of letting the players concentrate & compete with more aural clarity. Paul did his job in combating that bias.
ALL THAT WORK FROM 5-2 DOWN JUST TO CHOKE IT AWAY
At least Paul won. That's what matters. The crowd had him shook, but he pulled it together.
@@got2bjosh You're wrong.
Had Gasquet learned to come forward earlier in his career, he would have won a lot more perhaps a grand slam instead of staying back trying to outhit big hitters. Too late now.
Gasquet at this age playing competitive tennis vs Paul is a big achievement.
Что за бредовая концовка 😢
