Cool to see other planers. I run a Butler planer mill at work its about 1960s?. Double colum table is 2meters wide and 8m long. Amazing how accurate they are. When im doin another interesting job i will record a video and upload.
The first planners l saw were at my first job at Colonial Machine Co. They had three .They used mainly to cut mold bases .l never ran one there but did run the shape a little. I didn't run them out of business like W&S .l worked there two and a half years right out of high school . I would have been there a lot longer but I had a terrible fight with the boss. I learned so much and owe so them plenty.
Dear Rees, I would like to ask if you could elaborate a bit more on the marks relating to the straight toothed rack & bull gear, I have just got my Powell Planer working and in some instances I see some "surface pattern" rather than deviation. Do you have a picture what it would look like? Otherwise I like to thank you for sharing your work with the planer, a very valuable source of info. Regards Henrik
@@heinzhaupthaar5590 Thanks for your reply! The marks frequency does not correspond to rack pitch but appeared more like chatter. I have now solved most by utilizing other cutting geometries but still can improve i think. Cheers

You could measure the intervals between the marks and compare it to your rack. If it fits it's rather sure it's the gears.
