- Patagonia R2 TechFace Hoody Review
The R2 TechFace Hoody is one of Patagonia's technical fleeces, designed for staying active in colder weather. Whether hiking, running, or skiing, you will find the features of this hoody perfect for staying warm this winter season.
I'm 5'6, 120 lbs, 27" waist, 37" hips, and 33" chest. I'm wearing a size small, with plenty of room of layers underneath.

From my understanding of the R1 techface hoody (having read reviews and seen pics) the r2 techface hoody is a snugger fit. It feels a bit like a balaclava. But if you’re not using the hood you don’t feel it is there. You can simply have it up around tour chin and neck, like a buff. I understand that the variants without the techface are more breathable but also have less wind resistance and are without the DWR coating. If it was heavier ran I would probably before a lighter base/mid layer than this, with a waterproof jacket on top. But as a stand alone top layer in rain showers and some snow, or as a mid layer under a down jacket or tougher waterproof in very cold conditions, this would be ideal. Compared to many older polar tech fleeces I’ve owned this feels slimmer in the body, more athletic, and therefore still able to use as part of a layering system without finishing padded out.
Ya i can’t decide between the R1 and R2 for walking the dog and under my rain coat
Great review, thanks! Do you still have the jacket? If so, how is it holding up? Thanks!
How does the exterior material feel? Do you believe snow will cling to it if that may be an issue? It looks almost like a textured fleece on the outside but I could be incorrect.
Are you bothered by the lack of adjustability of the jacket? The R1 has all the cinches while the R2 is so minimalist.
No really. I wear this more as a sweater than a jacket.
So is it an obvious difference with r1 vs r2?
I have the R1 TechFace and it's not really a warm jacket so I wear it over an R1 jacket.. I'm guessing this is better but would also like to know how warm it is comparitively?
@@ianteague2672 the R1 & 2 tech faces are not at all the same, night and day...the R1 tech is cut like a shell, is not warm at all (even compared to the regular R1) and is basically a breathable soft shell, it doesn’t hold heat and it’s not cut for layering so it sucks as a mid layer but it excels as an active soft shell (though I much prefer the old airshed pullover) The R2 tech is a legit mid layer that has more stand alone range due the the tougher face weave, and it’s actually warm. For the same price as the regular R2 (hoodless) so it’s a no-brainer. The inner lofty side really reminds me of the fleece on the R3 reversible hoody from a few years back, which I just replaced with this. Fluffy but with a grid unlike the usual R2. The grid gives it range so you won’t overheat sitting in a chilly office with just a T, but it can be a deep winter staple mid layer as well
