Alan - this review was magic! Thank you. I just got both the R1 TF and the Nano Air on Patagonia WornWear “excellent condition.” I plan to use the Nano Air as my under shell warmer yet breathable ski mid layer. And of course use the R1 Tech Face for everything imaginable cool/cold weather active related. Thanks again!
I am a person who takes awhile before I warm up I normally avoid the cold freezing temps. If it's 25-30 degree temp I feel like I am freezing. I prefer spring and summer overall but I have to accept the cold when I am trekking over a pass above sea level. The R2 would be my choice if it is warmer than the R1 thank you for the review.
Hey Alan, another great video. It’s only a matter of time before the popularity of this channel soars, this is seriously top notch stuff, keep at it! We head up to whites every winter to bag a couple of the easier summits, would you completely omit a rain shell with this even if precipitation is likely? When conditions are mild i usually just wear LS base + 100 wt fleece with rain jacket as shell if needed and I’m not sure where this jacket would fit in.Thanks !
If there is even a sight possibility of precip. at above freezing temps I would always take a light rain jacket like the Enlightened Equipment Visp. There is a video review of it on this channel. Theres also an excellent rain jacket guide on my site www.adventurealan.com/best-lightweight-rain-jacket/. Best -alan
Hi I’m just starting to hike but a weekend warrior right now with our 2 GSD’s. We live in South Jersey and the weather is starting to break into the 50’s. As it gets colder temps will go down into the upper 20’s - mid 30’s. And it does get windy here. I already have a 150 merino base layer and been eyeing the R1. It’s hard to believe that a base layer and an R1 will keep me warm? I’ll be doing slow medium hiking with our dogs and stopping for breaks. Now I know you said it does but I’m nervous that I won’t be warm enough. Can you provide some more insight from an amateur? Thanks!
Just wondering if you have heard or tried the All Paca fleece hoodie from Appalachian Gear Company? I have been eyeing one, however I also like what you have to say about the R1. I can only buy one so I wanted to know what you think about the All Paca hoodie if you have even heard of it?
Good Q Joe. First, I assume you mean the R1 TechFace (and not the plain R1). Second, the All Paca fleece hoodie is sold out in Men's. Third, we have not tested the garment, but even so it does look to be a competitor to the plain R1 (but not the R1 TechFace which is going to be a lot more wind and precip resistant vs either the plain R1 or the All Paca). Might end up being based on your preference for natural fibers, vs. synthetic. Best, -alan
Correct on all your points. At some point in my life I will have both. To me the R1 techface sounds more functional in the backcountry so that one is the one I will purchase first. Thanks for the reply.
Hi, great review. I'm interested in both of these these jackets, but am not sure which to get. Which one would you recommend for higher exertion skate skiing? I typically like to wear only a thinner baselayer under the jacket, and ski in temps ~20F and above in Washington state. Thx
Peyton, good timing. Alison and I just got back from skiing at +13 F in the R1's. Bot of us with a base-layer and light fleece vest on top. Hope that helps, -alan
@@adventure_alan_co Thanks! Looks like the r1 is the way to go, and then layer up if need be. In your opinion do you think the r2 might be too warm for more aerobic activities in these temps? Fleece lining on r2 definitely looks comfy, but less breathable.
@@adventure_alan_co I wear shorts year round here in Chicago winter 😅. But would classifying it as a softshell with fleece lining be a little more accurate?
Would the R2 Techface be too warm for XC skiing in temps of around 20-25F? Trying to decide between the R1 and R2. I used to own an R1 Techface, and din’t find it as warm as a regular R1 (I never got a chance to use it while skiing though). I worry the R2 Techface would be too warm. I usually XC ski on relatively flat trails.
In other words, if I were to get one of the two, is the R1 the better option? It seems like the R1 would be more versatile, as I could just wear a thicker merino base layer under it on colder days.
Yes, the R1 would definitely be the better option for active XC skiing. And of course you can always put a thin fleece vest under it to boost warmth if it's really cold. Warmest, -alan
Nano air is less breathable and has more insulation. It's too warm unless you're hiking in less than 20-30 degrees or so and the techface is more abrasion resistant and durable long-term.
Sorry for the late reply. Would agree with most except for breathability. I would say the Nano air has similar brethablity. But agree that the R1 TF is better for high exterction, is more water resistant, and more durable. Warmest, -alan
I haven't seen the jacket so can't say anything definitive. But 650 fill power down and what is likely not the lightest fabrics will make this jacket possibly double the weight of lighter alternatives. For lighter jackets, see our GUIDE TO LIGHTWEIGHT DOWN JACKETS AND PANTS FOR BACKPACKING www.adventurealan.com/lightweight-down-jackets/ Warmest, -alan
Sorry to hear that. Patagonia has a multi-decade reputation for durable gear and and impeccable warranty policy. Send it back by all means. They will repair or replace it and they will also want the product feedback. Best, -alan
This is exactly what I wanted to see- R1 vs R2.. you should have that in the title!! Thank you!
This should be titled R1 Vs R2. Great video. Thank you. Especially talking about the temperatures.

very nice and useful review! thanks Alan!!

In the white mountains all the time. Hope to cross paths .
Likewise Joshua. Best, -a
Ya I need something to go under my GTX rain coat, I’m thinking the R1 will be warm enough under it
Nice!
Cool video and great tips. I love my R-1
Thanks for the kind words Jason! Wishing you a great year of hiking. Warmest, -alan

This sounds like it can couple as a winter coat 🤔
Not really. It is more of a shell than an insulating jacket. So more for active use than being still and keeping you warm. Best, -alan

Alan, does this serve the same purpose as the nano air hoody?

Do you have knowledge of the downs jacket sold in Costco Eddie Bauer Men’s Cirrus Down Jacket. Looks lightweight but not sure of the quality for $50?

What size r1 is that?
RS R, it's a Men's medium. Hope this helps. Best, -alan
My r1 tech face fell apart when the lamination separated after four months.

@@adventure_alan_co yeah I returned it for a non-tech face. I love it. No problems.
