The gun battery shown here (under the cottage) is actually a museum today. It is a nice place to visit, and the view from where the cannons are located is quite something.

I did my service in -85 within the artillery. During this time this was normality so it wasnt something we really thought about. All your friends did their time on different regiments. We are a long way from that massive total defense machinery today. Its being rebuilt though and the technical development kept on going, which is a real advantage now.

We actually had the biggest coastal artillery in the world. Just massive, just crazy to think about today when RBS15 is doing the same job for far less

RBS 15 does not do the same job as the entirety of KA, not even close.
RBS 15 was just one tool in a whole shipping container sized KA tool box back then, and there were more RBS 15 launchers too than there is now.

@@SonsOfLorgar I think most people would agree to that coastal artillery have been replaced by surface to surface missiles. In fact to my knowledge no western country uses coastal artillery any more since guided surface to surface are so much more accurate and versatile. Also, RBS15 is not just a surface to surface missile. It can also be fired from the air.

Even the Finns have dismantled their ancient coastal artillery.

Do you know if there is a similar show but British? Would be really interesting to see some Cold War stuff from your home country!

This scenario is kind of based on they would attack sweden and sweden alone. Something that is theoreitcally possibly, but very unlikley.
I would also kind of think that ussr at that point would have problem cordinating there radar to a degree that would alow them to take out the swedish airforce.
The airforce supose to be a ghost. Even if they would know about all the bases, they would not be able to take them all out. It would be incredebly costly considering how well they where defended.
Its worth saying that the akan mobile costal artilery is one of the most brutal bit of artilery equipment ever deplyed.
It had a fiering rate of 80 shells per minute.... 80... artilery.

Why unlikely? If Russia decided during the cold war that a full war with NATO was inevitable within the next few decades, they would have been in a much better position if they had gobbled up Sweden first. Then they could have taken Norway in few days once the big war started, and made it impossible for NATO to resupply over the Atlantic.
Sweden could have been attacked using very low intensity warfare, so that the politicians in the west felt that they didn't want to escalate to WW3. Just compare with Ukraine today. Then Russia could have just pressed on, taking piece by piece of Sweden.

@@yt45204 The issue with Attacking Sweden alone is that Norway, Denmark and Finland exist. And also USA.
Norway, Denmark and Finland would not let Russia attack Sweden: now they would suddenly be 4 times as many subs attacking Russian ships. And there Baltic navy never was that large so they could handle that. Norway and Denmark's air-force would also engage. For Finlands.. well they might stand back.
There is also one more reason. This was not known until 2011. Sweden and USA had a secret pact that if USSR would ever attack, USA would directly and with non question asked supply Sweden with any and all equipment that would be needed.
Why would USA do that.. well apart from technology training that was really important for USA and there air force. If USA didn´t comply, Leningrad and/or Moscow would be nuked.

@@matsv201 well Ukraine basically have the same agreement (due to them trashing all the nukes after the fall of the USSR) and just look at how the entire conservative side of the US political map are talking about stopping support to Ukraine.

    You're underestimating the USSR.
Remember that they where faf more capable then the current Russian military...
And SAMs etc where less effective back then.
They probably could have taken out the majority of the Swedish air force and navy pretty quickly.
