Just got one!
ok
Is Casey your wingman (cameraman) on this run?
A spirited man does not need merchandising to let him or others know he is a spirited man.
make a shirt, the sweatshirt is amazing quality, but a t-shirt would be welcomed for this weather!
I don't think I would watch a video of a man running 9 mins if it weren't you. This is art
I watched Casey run a lot of miles. It wasnt all he did. But he made it fun.
my guy decide to speak facts
He talks 100% like a writer with his own particularly quirky style, filled with smooth redundant strings of sentences which I would not be able to pull off if I tried.
Ditto. But I loved every minute of it... somehow.
And somehow I didn't even realize I did that
I watched this on my Tv, but you can’t comment on TV. So I searched this video on my IPad just to tell you that it was tremendous. This is the first comment I’ve ever made on a UA-cam video.
Van’s storytelling is THAT good. Welcome to the Comments Section. :)
You've got some top notch subscriptions, tho
Bruh your account is 15 years old ?!!!
God bless you Rob Jones.
let's go rob
“If Casey couldn’t do it, then it couldn’t be done.” I love the faith he has in his brother. A true spirited man
😭😭
* couldn't have been
@@ForwardEarth did that make you feel better?
I just watched 9 mins of someone hating on running... and it made me want to run! That's how good this video is
Exactly 😲😲
exactly x 2. you explained this well my friend
“Running makes him slightly less crazy...” Yep.
I always compared my running as rebooting a computer..... a reboot for my mind. My mind just goes quiet during a run, all I’m thinking about is breathing and pace.... and every once in a while, after I’ve grinded out several miles, and idea will surface, forged from all those miles of my feet hitting the pavement.
I vibed with that statement too. It's what keeps me saying keeps me nice keeps me a decent dad. Without running I'm a raging a******
Only UA-camr that I can watch without getting bored or skipping the video
But would you call van a UA-camr?
Only spirited youtuber.
@@dermicha880 wow, well said!
I skipped it just now..
2:55 ...absolutely savage.
Love how on top of watching UA-cam filmmakers you are I see you on all my favs
Oh hey
my exact thought
not even suprised to see you here
@@judegnelson McConnell and Neistat are both great, recommend me some more if thats your taste lmao
I feel like Casey was behind the camera here and just thinking "I love running!" the whole time
Wasn’t that his pick up truck at the end. I bet it was Casey recording.
@@DaytonFrost I think is Vans truck form the video he made about putting a bike rack in the back
@@santiagog I missed that video, I see the bike tho. Good call.
@@DaytonFrost and the truck was casey's ... he gifted it to van, that's on the thanku video
I was thinking the same thing.
That moment you realize you just watched nearly 10 minutes of someone running (and you don’t regret one second of it)
I recommend watching some movies of Billy Yang or Ginger Runner especially When Dreams Go To Die - way over an hour about guy running in the forests - zero regrets
To me it was more-so listening to 10 minutes of wisdom
I just realized something... if you put all his videos together, write out the scripts, I mean, someday they will be a great novel.
Ive already done this to his fourth turning video high as fuck at 4am.

@@AthenaTheSlayer no im talking about James, not van.
Yes. this would be a great beneficiary of the videos.
Runners high is a real thing! I've experienced it plenty of times. It's the feeling of blood pumping through your veins, your chest filling up with fresh air as you breathe in and out in sync with your footsteps on the ground, your entire body running in sync. You feel free in those moments.
Not as good as a "shiny"✨ high 😁
Especially when you have the right songs playing
Running with no music or headphones is the only way to run. Can’t tell me otherwise lol. It’s just so much better to run and be able to here your breathing, footsteps, nature, etc...
@@road2iron611 good thing nobody's forcing you!
People who "can't run" without headphones are truly running from something. I personally alternate, but know I get the most out of runs when I allow my thoughts my full attention.
I would watch every movie and listen to every audiobook that was narrated by Van. Anyone else?
first youtube channel i've been excited about in ages
His mention of the father & son resonates with me. Having a child makes you become the best version of yourself. It makes you LIVE everything you SAY you believe.
Well put. Couldn't be more true
The only UA-camr where I do not "skip" over the ads. Instead I scroll through the comments until the Spirited Man comes back on.
This Spirited Man, requires our full attention.
Like they need the extra money. 🙄
"running makes him a little less crazy..."
I can relate.
no words - 9 minutes of perfection
Running was the only source of peace in my life. I was at peace for 7 years. When all the cartilage in my hips went away at the age of 47, I knew I would never find peace again. Sure, I got a new hip but the doctor told me that the only time I could ever run again was if I had to run from an explosion. I look at every runner with absolute envy. RUN while you can. Run.
I've had to change tactics on what brings me peace a few times. It's selfish of me to recommend it, but I highly recommend motorcycles.
So is running bad for you then?
Van's brother, Casey, still runs all the time even though he was told he could never run again by a doctor. I know of another person who whose knees are messed up and was told repeatadly by a doctor not to run. He continues to run - he is literally addicted to running.
@@Skatted for me, now, yes. For the majority of humanity, no. Wear good shoes, stretch, be aware of your surroundings and GO.
@@Skatted it depends on what surface, how long, and how much padding. Running marathons on concrete isn't great. sure your aerobic capacity will be great but the damage on your joints just isn't worth it. running a few miles after stretching, with padding, on grass has very little downside but I think biking is a better option even though I'm a runner lol you can go farther faster with less impact and you can drink while doing it also it has SIGNIFICANTLY less damage on your joints
"He's tried to quit running, ever since."
This line earned my sub.
This is the kind of channel that I still hope is out there on youtube. Thank you.
everything he makes is so amazing. you can tell he hasnt been messed with by technology and social media etc. and its so refreshing
There is nothing like this on UA-cam or anywhere else, truly amazing content, I think Van just inspired me to start running at the age 47 !
I started at 51, go for it!
DO IT!
I got serious about it at 53, 59 now. You can do it!
Early morning here in India. And what a start to this day. Spirited Man.
Hello Fellow Country person! Agreed. A very thoughtful video....
Hello! Greetings from the Southwest USA. I read your comment and it made me really happy, I don’t know why. Peace!
@@zamzam-br3fi i am glad it made you happy.
This spirited man just completed a marathon about 8 hours priorto writing this, he doesn't know why he needed to do another marathon, just had to. One of this spirited man's most enlightening moments came to him during his first marathon, Karl Jung might have called it "integrating the shadow". At another marathon this spirited man dealt with his grief surrounding his younger cousin's passing; the spirited man wanted to honor his cousin by putting her name on his bib, everyone thought his name was "Lauren" and cheered him on by yelling "Go Lauren!" hearing her name yelled at him changed him somehow. 2 more marathons planned. Probably will keep doing them until he destroys his knees or suffers an irreparable injury. Does running suck? Yeah. Has running healed this spirited man's anxitey riddled broken brain? Yeah.
Inspiring story as this spirited man trains for his first marathon.
@@TheFIREFLAME53 Best of luck! Hopefully I can do another one this summer.
This is very beautiful thank you
Your videos are addictive, watching your videos makes me feel fulfilling, feels like I am reading a book
Such an unique channel. Feels so paceful.
As a runner, it's not for everybody. You have to be able to not think about running but let your mind wander. When you get to that point, it becomes enjoyable.IMO, you should be able to run at least 5 miles. The first miles until you warm up suck. It's after that which is so much better.
You missed the point friend. He wasn't asking for motivation or telling people to get motivated. He was making a statement about building habits that are vital to your existence. That are inescapable. That you may dislike or wish could go away is immaterial. Habits always win. So go build habits that build you up.
@@FrankDBoyce I know that Van's video has a deeper meaning, but I was just simplifying by addressing the title itself. I thought i'd share my thoughts about running because it doesn't have to be a chore and a healthy habit. It could actually be something you enjoy - and for many, like his brother Casey, it is a form of therapy and time to think about other things. When you can get that runner's high, it's truly incredible.
@@JewiMacca You are correct. I know it because growing up I had a dad addicted to running. He ran competitive marathons and drug us kids all across 3 states most weekends making it happen. This was during the *RUN CRAZED 1970s* when marathons & 5 & 10K races were *COMMON EVENTS.* He could be a limping physical wreck, but he'd still go to the doctor's office to have fluid drained out of his knees so he could go run a marathon.
@@JewiMacca oh I'm with you friend. I love running and it was a huge escape for me during deployments in the military. And also, I wasn't trying to Dad-splain to you either, my apologies if it came off as such. I just wanted to clarify what I thought the purpose/point was. Cheers!
I've never ran over one mile
I immensely enjoy these videos.
Thank you for telling me its okay to hate exercise.
5 years ago I lost 125lbs. Then, I met my now wife and I got fat again. I think about those workouts all the time, how hard they were, how I dreaded them before-hand. My brain conveniently leaves out the part about how good I felt about finishing them afterward, and how after a year I had transformed myself. My brain wants to convince me to not do them because I hate it. I need to remember that it's OK to hate it. It's just NOT ok to not do it.
The key is - Don't try to find an excuse, make it part of your routine. I feel abit lost if I don't do my (nearly) daily workout.
i got fat and lazy after high school. swam my whole life, varsity, team captain the works. After highshcool i didn't have a team or family/coaches to motivate me and i quit on myself. Started to try and get into running for the 30000th time this past week, this video makes me want to stick at it and get my shit together. thanks.
You should look into Rich Roll .. inspirational shit.
I am a fat lazy man in London, been running 2-3 (sometimes less) a week since November Ive now signed up for a 10K (6 miles) and got my 5k time to a personal best. You can do it! Just keep going. You've got this!

while i’m early, i’d like to say thank you van for this amazing, inspiring, and passionate series. stay spirited.
This resonates with me in so many ways yet I vocalize it in somewhat different ways.
But here I am, 15 days in to running daily, diving deeper into my running journey.
I believe I’m spirited. But right now it’s just a spark.
❤️🏃♂️💪🏻
Hypnotic. Been loving these mini-films, so refreshingly different when compared to most of UA-cam. Keep 'em coming Van!
Yes, there is a “Runner’s High”. I rarely find it any more, but it gets me out the door every day.
Never stop making videos, I love the style and attitude of every video. It is almost a meditation Thank you
I come back to this video every few months. There is just so much here... easily the most impactful UA-cam video I've ever watched. Thanks for the constant inspiration! I'm proud to be supporting your art.
I used to go on 3 mile walks everyday, i have a physical disability that keeps me from running, so I walk instead. And God do I wish I could run
When I see someone with disabilities I truly feel for them and feel really appreciative of my own good health which can change any time. Just feel grateful to be able to run. And hats off to you, good sir, for keeping yourself in the motion despite the obstacles you have!
Same here. I love to run, but can't, due to chronic inflammation in my connective tissue. So ironic for us.
Keep walking
@@adamvoid555 I did a speech in my college course about my disability and my closing line was "so when you walk, make every step count. And when you run, run as fast as you can for the people like me who can't" so I'll leave you with that my friend
Van, if you switched out the un-like-able sweat pants for some that you like, you might like running. - Eric.
your hate speech towards running has inspired me to start running more than any running evangelizer out there. I could really use that kind of discipline plus the health benefits.
A truly spirited man. These videos are constantly incredible. I keep re watching them and re commenting.
Your videos are like meditation to me; I come out of them feeling better, relaxed, grateful. Thank you Van.
Probably the best 9mins of UA-cam viewing pleasure I’ve experienced. I hate it when my body says I can’t run today, and I hate it when I don’t have an excuse to not go running.
Btw, Casey often says, “I love running”. I guess we all lie to ourselves.
"See ya around, Maroon Golf!"
I see what you did there.... Black Saab
Oh!... If it isn't the jackass
Classique
Pretty sure these are the only UA-cam videos I watch twice in a row; back to back. Thanks for sharing, Van!
What a joy and pleasure this channel is.
I hated running as a kid. Then one day my cousins invited me to run. The side of my stomach started hurting. I pushed through, and my oh my was I satisfied with the experience.
It’s a pain we all just grow to love 🤷🏽♂️
“one day on one of his runs, he said this in his phone” ***ad plays**. idk if this was planned, but it’s brilliant
Best one yet Sir. These videos are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
This video is SO good that I just watched it a second time, and I'm sure I'll return to it again and again. It's like a meditation of sorts.
I hated running when I was just starting to do it regularly. After a while I got used to running and I began to love it. I look forward to my runs and I feel like running more and more. I guess the runner's high is real
Redemption of the Spirited Man - He runs another marathon, and has a better finishing time.
Simply spectacular. I was enthralled. Thanks for making this.
Van, this is just wonderful. Thank you.
You capture and convey the duality of this subject beautifully.
I'm a walker, I walk everyday, but I have much admiration for the runner.
I think walking is severely underrated. Walking every day is one of the simplest and best things one can do for physical and mental health. It certainly hits the "makes you slightly less crazy" point. Cheers!
@@scottprewitt4712 Well said, thank you Scott.

Your storytelling is a gift in my life - thank you.
Thanks for posting this, Van. I really needed to hear someone else doing something they hate 5 days every week. It makes me feel less alone.
Hypnotizing, meditating.
This spirited man’s brothers runs everyday.
Those steps right at the end! That must be killer. I loved the way you filmed the entire thing while narrating over the top of it.
I'm so glad you decided to create these amazing videos that inspire me. Thank you.
Running offers me a sense of clarity, a moment to organize my thoughts, a feeling of absolute satisfa.......oh who am I kidding. I absolutely hate it
I love how there are “props” and “costumes” from recent vids present in this one. Like, why did he have on this construction worker vest in the previous couple. Well, stick around, because Van will reveal it in the next couple. Casey was right: Favorite UA-camr.
Really excellent work!! Loving this channel
Amazing! Your videos are so relaxing and so high quality! Keep going!!!!!!

You got to get some proper running clothes dude. I am sure a lot of brands would sponsor you. You got to run in something you love to wear. Running in baggy clothes is like jogging in the sand. Also you need something that the sweat wont sit in. Trust me! You might not love running but you can make the best of it.
I am with you in that I HATE running. Now that I have stopped running however I feel guilty every day. Running is better than feeling guilty in my opinion.
Love the uphill leading camera and downhill following camera shot switch!
This was beautiful. Thank you! Reminds me of why I love running.
