Leclerc and Ferrari the toast of Melbourne by Peter Windsor

  • From the pole to a perfect start, to his emphatic last (fastest) race lap, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc dominated the Australian GP in Melbourne, round three of the FIA F1 World Championship. Max Verstappen was running second when his Red Bull ground to a halt after 20 laps, leaving P2 to Max's team-mate, Sergio Perez. Mercedes finished third and fourth with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton - but the race was short-lived for Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who inelegantly spun out after a slow start on the hard Pirelli. Peter Windsor analyses the day's events.
(Note: we inadvertently say in this video that Max retired on lap 20 rather than lap 39. Apologies for this.)

Hello. As an Australian please may I ask you a question, apologies for my ignorance. Great to see F1 racing back in your country but I'd forgotten what a dreary, safety car infested circuit Melbourne is. I assume that it keeps getting the race purely because of the $ whereas places like Bathurst (one of my top 5 favourite tracks in the world) is just too far away from the big cities. What do you think?

@@1barnet1 Yes, he has a big lead now but it only takes a few DNFs like Max has had to wipe out that lead and we still have over 200 points to play for this season so a lot can still happen. If Charles continues to drive like this and the car at the very least remains this good, possibly better throughout the season with no reliability issues then yes, I don't see RB or MB being a threat to the driver's championship. Securing the Constructor's though is another matter. Carlos is not Charles and isn't as composed in his driving and even though we know the car is as good as under Charles' hands, Carlos will have to refocus and regroup to show any doubters that he belongs in Ferrari and driving such a capable car. This is an opportunity he can't afford to squander for him and for the team.

Small correction regarding the race start. Carlos had to get his steering wheel replaced before race start. The new steering wheel was misaligned and had some wrongly configured buttons which made the engine stall on race start. Not wheelspin.
If you add up both incidents from q3 plus the broken steering wheel and its also incorrect replacement together with an alternative strategy as no other choice to be able to gain some sort of advantage to such situation then you resort to the last variable which is the driver giving it all to compensate and thus causing a driver error.

That was the most honest analysis of what happened at racestart, everyone keeps saying Checo had a bad start and that was the reason Hamilton got him , and that wasnt the case, he actually had a better start than Max, even Martin Brundle I think was the one that noticed on sky f1 live, nothing was mentioned afterwards but that hurt both max and checo's race strategywise, that compromised the startegy. Checo I think was as surpised as us that Max started so slow, I dont think he was trying to pass him at all.

    • @leadlefthand

Ferrari has a car that's gentle on the tires. Leclerc pulled away because Max had to nurse his tires with excessive graining. The drawback for Ferrari is they need a longer time to warm the tires up properly, making them vulnerable to safety car restarts (hence why Max nearly overtook Charles in the second restart). In qualifying, Ferrari needs 2 warm up laps before they can set their quick lap on the 3rd attempt. And in Australia, that long working window showed how Red Flags could heavily compromise the session as what happened to Sainz. With just one full lap available with the clock winding down, Sainz' tires were not up to speed and he just couldn't get a decent lap time, unlike Red Bull that can just clock in their quick lap after the outlap.

    • @tanyaghosh1311
      @tanyaghosh1311 2 роки тому

@@ziodres2212 I really doubt it. The number of overtakes he would have to do would have degraded the tires a LOT. The likelihood of his tyres needing changing at the exact time of both the safety cars is super unlikely. Plus, even if he did pit under both safety cars only, he would have to battle all the slower cars who would hold him up because of his anti-stall at the start. Then he would break into the top 10 and need to beat Alonso, Ocon, Daniel, Lando and Lewis and George. The Ferrari is mad fast but what happened with Stroll and all the faster cars behind him would have happened to Sainz. Between Gasly, Ocon and the McLarens, he would not have been able to pass.

Russell is overall better than Bottas, Bottas had marginally better qualifying pace but Russell has better race pace but so far, it's apparent George is not on Hamilton's level (at least not yet). Russell has been given a tow twice by Hamilton; once in Q3 in Bahrain and the other in Melbourne, he locked up in Bahrain behind Hamilton finishing behind Bottas in Bahrain and he still finished p6 on pole behind Hamilton with a tow and a lighter car (according to Lewis) in Melbourne.
I do think if Lewis hadn't been done in by George's lucky safety car pitstop, he'd have challenged Perez for p2 given the phenomenal amount of pressure he applies, forces opponents into errors. Max should be challenging along with Hamilton for a 3 way title fight but the Honda sponsored Redbull Powertrains are a harder fix than chassis/aero upgrades given the engine freeze and the fact that reliability issues usually plague a team throughout an entire season which for Redbull will only be made worse by the ICE/PU freeze. Ironically, Christian Horner was the primary if not only team principal who notoriously pushed for an engine freeze... oh well. In any case, I'm looking forward to the eventual and spectacular Charles and Lewis wheel to wheel battles which be a masterclass in proper racing and imo a lot less toxic from the drivers and team principals.

Yeah i think last year's problems for Leclerc and him losing to Carols at the end of the year on points (without dnf he would have been at least 20 points ahead), people jumped into conclusions really fast.. Leclerc just has that extra in him, like all grate drivers have.. And people forget its not the same fighting in the midfield and actually fighting for wins and leading races each and every week. Leclerc showed that in 2019 and heck even in 2021 in Silverstone, but Merc was just to fast and he had some problems with the engine that he had to manage.. Carlos has NEVER done that...and he has way more experience than Leclerc.. Every single time Carlos has finished ahead of Leclerc, it was ether just in front of Leclerc or Leclerc dnf or some other technical problem.

Great review again Peter and great for Charles with another win. I hope the competition will rise (back) as we otherwise will have a Mercedes-esque year again. I wonder what Scrabs says about the way Ferrari manages the porpoising after just a slight tap on the brake (like into corner 11) where it's completely gone and the car sits as a rock into the corner. I can't imagine any (passive) aero-layout or damper setting that can fix that. Is there something like active suspension going on? Brake-pressure feeding the suspension at the back? Just curious...

Wonderful analysis Mr. Peter Windsor! ...and I have to agree... charles is "seasoned" by those bad car days... we have to remember, he was dominating GP2 like no other young driver and his strengths have been further developed by the "bad days" he had in a struggling ferrari... and now he controls a race beautifully from start to finish (except for Saudi GP this year due to setup). also, oh well, there goes horner who even stated - after being asked by johnny herbert about the forthcoming race that they still have that bit of an advantage compared to the ferrari - "...but it looks like they'll have a bit of a headache with all that bouncing going on...and of course what we don't really know is how much it's gonna affect their tire degradation and other characteristics...so, um.."i think it's gonna be tough for them tomorrow... they've got a really really quick car BUT I STILL THINK WE CAN RACE THEM and we'll see how powerful these DRS zones are..."... - oh well, how fortunes have changes...THIS IS A BAD PREDICTION by horner... who has the problem really? it's not ferrari ain't it? just like you said Mr. windsor, Horner got it wrong for predicting the ferraris are not that fast in their long runs... hilarious really eh? coz it sounded different after the race when horner stated "it's really understandable...it's frustration (talking about Max's engine fail)...uhm... that was really a disappointing result to finish the race... I mean we umm... we don't know what the issue is yet... Max didn't really have the pace... and you know Charles are in the league of their own... - OH HOW THE STATEMENT TOOK A U-TURN... from arrogance...to humility... compared to Mattia and Charles who are really humble and composed since the beginning of the year... and saying this with Ferrari having not updated much the Ferrari from the winter testing right? :-)

But the proof is there that the cars are racing incredibly close. At one point mid-late race there was 4 seconds separating about 8 cars as stroll was parking his car in the way of Gasly. That’s a great outcome.

With regards to passing ability, I don’t really think today was the issue the car I just think it was the dynamics of the DRS train, the Aston was quick in the straights which kept Gasly behind even with drs, but that kept Bottas out of reach as well and then once both were clear of the Aston Bottas got around Gasly fairly effortlessly. I would be interested in FIA trying a race or two with no drs at all to see how things play out

I don't think the idea of the regulations was to radically change the ability for the cars to follow or radically change the pecking order. I think it was always about taking a step in the right direction that they can refine, and having the drivers making more of a difference to the lap time. I think it was more the media that tried to hype it up as being a magic solution.

I think the new regulations has helped the racing a lot. We did get overtaking in Albert Park, let's not forget how many dull races we've had with almost no overtaking. But most importantly the new regulations are letting the drivers get a lot closer on track with each other. We are seeing a lot less needing to back off and cool down the tyres.

The last 2 aus gp had 5 and TWO yes TWO overtakes, this weekend SMASHED that on the opening lap. If that race was commentated by fox sports we forsure would’ve been hearing about a new overtake record. It wasn’t insane, but the on track action at Albert park this weekend MASSIVELY improved. It still felt like the aus gp but not boring.
