So I saw a video of a lady using this very serger to see 7 layers of denim… so naturally, I thought that my exact same serger would be about to sew four layers of fleece going over a zipper end…. Uhhhhm NO. Don’t do it. If you are here on this video you probably already have 😂 I watch a different video that shows a different way to align lower looper, and now my loopers and needle are smacking each other. So I’m going to try to align it by your method and see if it works. Thank you so much for posting such a helpful video to those of us brave enough to try and fix ourselves.
Update: it worked! After hours of wasting my time yesterday on other videos (other ones say to move lower looper 18.5 mm to the right of needles basically when at lowest position, when in fact it is 2mm to the left of needles on this machine).. I did your lower looper method and it worked out great. I also had to adjust how far past the needles my upper looper was, so I adjusted that by making sure the upper looper hole was just barely past both needles when at highest position. My machine loopers were also very stiff along with the Allen wrench screws because they have never been adjusted before, so this took a while to work yesterday to get them to loosen up and move around. Thank you so much again! I saved a lot of money that I don’t have 😅 I went from feeling like I really broke it to the point on me not being able to fix to now finishing up serging my sweater. To the people who are working on their machines: don’t give up! Just keep slowly adjusting it until it is just right!
Your video fixed my problem! I love you Abi so much right now! I fixed both positions of my upper and lower looper and bam it worked! Thank you so much. I don't usually comment on these videos but you deserve a thank you because you went out of your way to help us!

Just bought this model, wish I'd known before about them not being very sturdy machines,it's a shame because as a first overlocker for a newbie they are ideal as they thread up so easy and are easy to use. I will however keep mine and use your how to and quick fix guides to keep it running for as long as I can while I save for a new model in the future
Thank you lady, I could kiss you. Your explanation was so thorough. My wife's Brother serger had the same problem, she called the repair man and it would have been better to buy another one. I followed you and viola, her machine is working fine now, she couldn't believe it
Thank you! I replaced mine with a Juki, but I still want to fix it and it has this problem exactly. I wish Brother made better quality stuff because everyone and their brother (pun intended) has this overlocker -
You made this video 7 months ago 🙌🏾 right on time for today. You video helped me to not be anxious, showed me which screw to loosen in order to remove the needle plate and that’s all I needed. My chain fork just needed adjustment 🙌🏾 I love you today so very much hugs 🫂 thank you for posting this video 😭 my birthday is today and I am going to finish my birthday outfit thanks to your guidance. Awesome gift 💝 of wisdom 🤲🏾 thank you again
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I was about to cry thinking my serger was done for! It took me a few hours to get mine realigned but this video was such a huge help! thank you!!
Thank you. I have a Brother 1334D Overlocker, but these are essentially the same machine. It was so useful to see this disassembly, as I badly needed to access the front left side of the machine, so I could give it a good clean.
Thank you soooooooo much! I had noticed a slight clicking sound on my machine, It would stop making the noise after a few stitches, and it was sewing normal, but I knew that was not the typical sound and decided to research on youtube. Luckily you came up and I was able to follow your video and have a better understanding on what is happening with the needles. Turns out my needle plate might have shifted slightly and the metal inside was ever so slightly hitting the needle. I was able to secure the needle plate and the metal piece under it a bit better and the problem was solved. Im so happy I chose not to ignore it, because I'm sure that would have been a big issue in the long run. Thank you again for your amazing detail on your video. I have a Brother 1034DX some minor differences but overall its the same.
It is essentially the same. Well done for working through the problem and fixing it DIY. 👍🏽 let’s stop paying the 🏴☠️ who overcharge for little things we can resolve ourselves. Well done you!!!
Thank you SO much for this video! I was able to repair my serger with 2 days to go before a wedding, and 2 pettiskirts needing rolled hems! I was so afraid my beloved serger was toast
You are AMAZING for posting this. I took mine in to an authorized repairman because the loopers were hitting. Spent quite a bit of money for that, hardly used it, two months later it happened again and I can’t get the timing right for the life of me
@@AbisDen I FINALLY fixed it to the best of my ability after (literally) several days and hours thanks to your info! I wish I would have known how cheap this machine was made before getting it, but I did get it for pretty cheap from eBay so I HAD to fix it lol
This is the video I need. Omg. I hope I can fix it. Either that or £90 at the shop! I'll have a go anyway. If I can fix it once I'll be able to fix it next time too.
I am so glad I found this. I will try tomorrow see if I can get mine fixed. We don’t have anyone near here that works on these. Mine jammed and I have tried several times to repair. I do have a question on how high should the needles be because I feel they are too low as well as my loopers keep hitting the needles. The thread take up I moved so is there a proper setting for those?
I can't thank you enough for these videos!! I've been able to hit all the measurements but no matter what I do there is not a 1mm gap between the upper looper and the needle. If I move the UL any further away from the needle it scrapes against the LL. The UL and needle are not scraping against each other but there is a very very small distance between the two.
Its tricky to get the balance, does it work. It’s also a matter of the metal bending inside, which I discuss in another video (maybe … it was a while ago now). The brother machines are terrible. The more I learn about machines and get to play with more brands and more models, the less I like brother. Xx I’m so happy tha5 I can help though x
So I have a question maybe you can help me with. I have this machine and have measured everything like you did in this video. But when my upper looper is that far away from my needles it crashes with the lower looper and to avoid crashing with the lower looper it will just barely hit my needles. Idk what else I can adjust or do I just need to get a new machine
Hi, Thank you for this video! I have my machine taken apart, but I can’t seem to find the right Allen wrench to loosen the upper looper. Can you please tell me what size you used? Thanks so much ☺️
Do your needles go in front of or behind your lower looper as they are moving up and down? When my needles are moving up, after going down, they are hitting the LL as they move up. They don't have any contact when they are going down though. Any suggestions??
Just to say your brilliant. It’s very rare to see women doing this sort of a job. I’ve been servicing my machines for years. I’ve taken them apart done the timing(watched your video) I’m about to take my overlocker apart and service, good oiling and see if I can calibrate the tension I’ve watch your other video on this but will watch again and again so I get it right. Well done Abi I’ve missed watching you.🪡🧵
I have a brother locked 1034 d the left thread is not catching on my surger. Do you have a video on how to fix that??? If so could you please send it to me. Thank you so much for all your videos. 💚😄
I need help ASAP, my singer pro finish serger is doing this exact thing and I wanted to know if the measurements would be the same for me since it's a different brand? I am currently making over 100 blankets for Western NC victims from Hurricane Helene. My machine went crazy, it broke two needles and I even found my needle plate was damaged in the process and now my upper and lower loopers are hitting each other. I had watched one video by someone else who showed it was an adjustment needed on the upper looper lower bar and well lets just say that did not go well and took me sometime to get it back on. I can't afford to take this into the shop because I have spent all the funding I had available for the fleece and thread. I still have 120 yards to go & I am desperate for help fixing this problem.
You probably just saved me hundreds of dollars getting mine fixed at the shop of buying a new one! Thank you so much for this! My husband got mine fixed right up thanks to you!
After seeing several of the videos covering the timing of this machine I set up mine accordingly and still had troubles under power with fabric having my left needle thread not being caught by the lower looper. Something I have not seen anyone cover is the fact that with the clamp bolt loose the lower can move fore and aft on its shaft. Mine was too far in and not letting it catch the needle threads correctly. Once I moved it out so that it just missed the needles as it passed them(like the hook on a regular sewing machine) my issue was solved. So for $4.00 I ended up with what seems to be an almost no use 1034D that couldn't be moved in either direction that now runs fine. There wasn't even any lint inside when I took the covers off. Check the lower looper to needles clearance at the same time you you set the distance to stitch finger.
I cover this in the timing video for the singer sewing machine. Generally speaking, all Overlockers are almost all the same and you’ll find solutions by watching the problem for any make of machine. But excellent, well done sir!
I have a question on a part that came off in my serger (when I was cleaning) I have a picture if I can get an email address to send to you a photo so you may be able to help me. thank you
I am having a problem with the lower looper slide. The thread slides all the way into the arm part instead of staying in that little box area. I think this is making the thread snap. Is this supposed to happen? If not how can I fix this? I have pics if you need to see what I'm talking about. Thank you for any help.
I had theBrother serger for my birthday over a year ago. Never got around to using it until very recently. All went well until I changed the thread. Now the machine won’t produce a link, just a long line of loose thread. I’ve re-threaded it time and time again following the book and your video so I know that is done correctly. I tried changing the needles to no avail, the tried different thread, but still having the same problems. Sadly the year’s guarantee is up, with me only using it twice for practice more than anything. I am very disappointed! Any ideas what I’m doing wrong?
Hi! Such a great video, thanks so much. However, I followed all the steps but for some reason the left straight stitch isn't catching on the bottom. I can see the upper looper going around both needles, but then only one of the rows of straight stitches is catching. Any ideas what this could be?
I love your videos Abi. I'm sorry to say that I just bought a Brother overlocker and am now waiting for all the problems to start 😢 Could you recommend a better machine that won't break the bank??
Oh no! You always have a cool off period in which to return the machine. I really rate the Aldi Necchi above this or even the singer from Lidl better that the brother. So you don’t really need to break the bank for a machine. I’m so sorry about that. The brother are not regarded well by any mechanic I know x
ABI can you please help me with my Babylock Evolution . It made the usual clunk which is never welcome and after replacing one of the needles and rethreading I am not able to thread the lower looper. It only blows through partly into the pipes. Obviously the machine is not stitching.
@@AbisDen yes Abi, had it repaired and serviced at the shop I bought it from at the cost of £400. I was told that even before the repair it would have fetched £1500 . .... Enjoy your new Zuki air threader .
Hi, I watched the video and I was hoping someone could help. I have a Brother 1034D like shown in the video. I changed the needles and rethreaded the machine. It has completely locked up where the hand wheel won't even move. I tried removing the foot plate with no success, as it seems to be stuck. There is no visual jam. Does anyone have any advice?
Sometimes the thread gets stuck in tension discs, brother machines are made with too wide spacing for the small discs, so thread gets trapped in the wrong spaces x good luck!
need HELP. Just got this machine from Amazon. But its not sewing. I plugged it in it comes on but when I press only hearing the sound of the motor. Nothing moves
Hi Abi, can you kindly advise me on how to unlock the handwheel of Singer S14-78? I bought the serger right before the Covid, but only opened the box two days ago.
Cheap machines. brother make plastic machines, you don’t tend to find this happens with other brands. Brother sell the worst of all machines, people say it’s singer, but I’d have a singer over a brother every time
@@AbisDen i see....i thought brother has good quality as their well known brand on other product like printer....thank you for respond me....really helpful video....😊😊👍👍👍
My brother has a similar issue. I called the repair man and it’s better to just buy a new one with the cost of repair!! I’m going to attempt this over the weekend. Wish me luck pls
Abi or anyone, on this machine (1034D) I own... I decided to give it a treat of new needles. Undid the grub screw too much and when I checked allen key on the desk no grub screw on the end. Sewing room torn apart but no luck. In Brisbane, Australia there isn't anything such as service anymore, so I'm having a nightmare just trying to find what size it is. I know from buying it's not 5mm or 6mm. DO YOU KNOW WHAT SIZE IT MIGHT BE? I think only 3mm is left maybe. AHHHgggghhh...
Hi Abi! I've been trying to fix my timing for the past several weeks. I started with the lower looper measurements and they are set as you say is correct. The upper looper is also correctly placed when needles are at their highest point. However, when I adjust the upper looper so that there is 1mm of space between it and the needles, the upper looper gets stuck on the lower looper. If I adjust the upper looper so that it passes by the lower looper without hitting, then it makes contact with the needles. It's as if there is not enough space for the upper looper to move in between the needles and the lower looper without hitting one or the other. Is there something besides the timing that could be wrong?
Doesn’t sound great does it. Hmmm. Has the angle of the upper looper been adjusted? Have a look at my other machine videos and maybe something will help. The problem with advice is, I can go as far as show how to correct for my machine. Unless I have yours sitting in front of me, it’s so hard to know exactly. Maybe it’s worth asking a fresh pair of eyes to look at it ?
Exactly the same thing here. I'm going to assume it's correct for now because others have the same experience and nothing is scraping against anything else....
Hi. Anyone please assist me with my problem. I owned a 2104d. After service, i felt the machine work differently. It sew like usual, the thread were working. The problem, when i sew, i heard some tightening sound and the lower looper thread was pulled(too tight). First i tried to adjust the tension, but it doesnt work. I tried to remove the left needle, and the machine work back to normal. This is my first time encountered the problem. Is it because of timing? Or other problem? It impossible to go back to the service person since it quite far away from where i stay. Thank you for the help.
The problem with these Brother machines is they are unfit for purpose. I would take it back to brother and ask for my money back. Consumer laws are in place to protect buyers from purchases unfit for purpose, and you are well within your rights to have a refund. Brother make terrible machines and dealers falsify customers rights to prevent returns.
Please help me this piece of RUBBISH is driving me crazy . Used it for an hour and half way through a project Threads are wrapping around the finger. I have followed your timing videos but to no avail!!
I do think people should steer clear of brother machines. The needle plate fork often bends on their machines, take a look at the video to help with that. Good luck 🌷
Would you please show a video about the feed dogs not feeding fabric through the overlocker. They just go up and down. It’s a Brother 734ds. I did send it back to the seller, awaiting a refund, but I thought it may others to fix theirs. Thank you. Regards

Oh no! You always have a cool off period in which to return the machine. I really rate the Aldi Necchi above this or even the singer from Lidl better that the brother. So you don’t really need to break the bank for a machine. I’m so sorry about that. The brother are not regarded well by any mechanic I know x
Help! What would cause the hand wheel to lock up on this serger? It will not budge!
I don’t know what to say. The brother machines are just the worst
Great tutorial. Thanks so much. Are these measurements common to all or most sergers, or specific to this model?
ABI can you please help me with my Babylock Evolution . It made the usual clunk which is never welcome and after replacing one of the needles and rethreading I am not able to thread the lower looper. It only blows through partly into the pipes. Obviously the machine is not stitching.
Hey Mary, is this problem resolved now?
@@AbisDen yes Abi, had it repaired and serviced at the shop I bought it from at the cost of £400. I was told that even before the repair it would have fetched £1500 . .... Enjoy your new Zuki air threader .
Why does my wheel overlocker stuck and wont spinning..😢
Hi abi, thanks for sharing. Hope you are well. Maz x
How do I get the cover back on without breaking it?
😓carefully x it should go on without force. I’ve shown it over a few videos. Good luck x
How to fix missing stitch for the needles (not from loops)Iam still have issues
Sometimes the thread gets stuck in tension discs, brother machines are made with too wide spacing for the small discs, so thread gets trapped in the wrong spaces x good luck!
need HELP. Just got this machine from Amazon. But its not sewing. I plugged it in it comes on but when I press only hearing the sound of the motor. Nothing moves
I have the same exact issue. Were you able to get it resolved or did you return it?
@@tashaunasasheika I got it fixed. Carried it by a service company apparently it was the timing and the belt was lose. It's working now
Hi Abi, can you kindly advise me on how to unlock the handwheel of Singer S14-78? I bought the serger right before the Covid, but only opened the box two days ago.
Follow the same process for this machine. Open it up and oil it. Good luck!
@@AbisDen Thank you very much for your prompt response !
Good morning, Abi!
The problem is solved, and it's working fine now.
Thank you ever so much, and I wish you all the best.
Yay
Hi...im just wondering what cause the timing seting of the upper or lower looper get wrong?
Cheap machines. brother make plastic machines, you don’t tend to find this happens with other brands. Brother sell the worst of all machines, people say it’s singer, but I’d have a singer over a brother every time
@@AbisDen i see....i thought brother has good quality as their well known brand on other product like printer....thank you for respond me....really helpful video....😊😊👍👍👍
My brother has a similar issue. I called the repair man and it’s better to just buy a new one with the cost of repair!! I’m going to attempt this over the weekend. Wish me luck pls
Still have problems to get fixed
Abi or anyone, on this machine (1034D) I own... I decided to give it a treat of new needles. Undid the grub screw too much and when I checked allen key on the desk no grub screw on the end. Sewing room torn apart but no luck. In Brisbane, Australia there isn't anything such as service anymore, so I'm having a nightmare just trying to find what size it is. I know from buying it's not 5mm or 6mm. DO YOU KNOW WHAT SIZE IT MIGHT BE? I think only 3mm is left maybe. AHHHgggghhh...
You should be able to contact your local Brother dealer, online, they will supply the part to you x
And I was chuffed with my Brother serger, lol.

I'm having the exact same problem! Did you ever manage to fix it?
Exactly the same thing here. I'm going to assume it's correct for now because others have the same experience and nothing is scraping against anything else....
My needle plate is held in place by a piece of metal that goes over the lower looper
Which machine do you have?
@@AbisDenThe 1034D, I found out to take it off and I saw it later in the video. It was the piece you called a Stitch Finger @ 5:21
Why the left thread is Not able to fixed. Came out Straight
Glad you’ve managed to fix it now 💪🏽🙌🏽
Could you please recommend another machine to buy?
Just not a brother. Janome and Jaguar have good mid priced machines and reasonable reliable
Good luck 🌷
@@AbisDen Thank you for your prompt response . Are there affordable surgers you recommend? I live in the US.
I am sorry that I didn't reply, I have only just found your reply. I don't know which to recommend, I imagine you've bought one by now x
Please see comment on reply.

Would you please show a video about the feed dogs not feeding fabric through the overlocker. They just go up and down. It’s a Brother 734ds.
I did send it back to the seller, awaiting a refund, but I thought it may others to fix theirs.
Thank you.
Regards
Thanks Ann. Good
Idea.
Not easy
Unfortunately, it isn’t the easiest task to undertake. I put these videos out to help you try. Take one step at a time. I have been doing this for many years and on hundreds of machines, so I get carried away. Keep at it, it will save you so much money 🫶🏽
Thank you so much!
Thank you @ZillyPaul
