Cursing in Yiddish at the black help - a comedy skit

  • This Hasidic fundraising skit almost shows a self-awareness of the racism that runs deep in this world. The Hasidic man is sort of nice when he talks to his black aide, but then constantly turns around and utters invectives in Yiddish. And then there’s a plot twist I won’t spoil. But there is a candid self-awareness in this comedy.

Here is what I understand as a German speaker, starting 5:30. (Some of it may be false friends, but it shouldn't be too far off.)
      - Moishe[?]! What do you _want_ from me? _What_ do you want from me? [...?] This happens every day! [...?]
      - [in English] You speak Yiddish?
      - The whole time I speak Yiddish.
      - [in English] The whole time?
      - Yes.
      - [in English] Since when?
      - 26 years.
      - The whole time you understood Yiddish?
      - Yes.
      - You knew[?] everything?
      - You understand when I scream at you in the bus?
      - Yes.
      - And on the train?
      - Yes.
      - [in Hungarian] Fortunately he doesn't understand Hungarian.
      - [in Hungarian] Of course I understand Hungarian.
      - [in Hungarian] You speak Hungarian?
      - [in Hungarian] Yes.
Born in Germany in 1969 and raised in a Protestant family, I grew up with the German translations of Ephraim Kishon (a Zionist humorist in Israel) and with collections of translated Yiddish jokes. Yiddish humor is very popular in Germany. Like British humor, it is similar enough to German humor to be always fully understood here, but different enough to be always fresh. I think it's objectively one of the best humorous traditions because it so often has self-deprecating elements instead of poking fun at others. (Self-deprecating humor is a guaranteed way to gain my respect.)
(In case anyone needs an explanation of why this sketch is so funny: After building up to the first punchline, it adds two more unexpected punchlines. Also there are some weird undertones concerning the relation between these two men that made me wonder which way this was headed. The first punchline was of course that Volvi understood everything, with the extra punch that he had silently been absorbing the regular insults for 26 years. The second punchline was that Mordechai decided to just go on as before, simply switching to a different language for his insults. And the third punchline was that Volvi understood that as well. Despite all these punchlines, the sketch doesn't have what I would consider a proper resolution, and I would consider that an unexpected meta-joke. This sketch is really subverting expectations in all sorts of ways.)
A more intricate and even funnier take on the same underlying idea is the YidlifeCrisis episode "Yingl Belz" (available on UA-cam with English subtitles, and now even in a version with Chinese subtitles).

    1) Its primarily the older generation, who lived through antisemitism, that would still speak this way of minority non-Jews, and this video was a way to poke fun at them too, and
    2) The heartbreaking thing about this video is that Willie was a well-loved fixture in Williamsburg, everyone knew him. He drove the hatzalah ambulance on shabbos. He was one of the first casualties of covid in early 2020. 😞

correction: xenophobia (or chauvinism), NOT racism. It runs deep in America too: we believed for many years in American exceptionalism, some of us till do.

American exceptionalism is not xenophobia. There are groups of people on the whole that excel over others in various aspects of humanity, be it in physical strength and prowess or intellectually. To deny this because you are a woke fool does not change the facts. Americans are exceptional, that is why you are not on the first plane to Africa.

Wrong! If you had any intellectual curiosity you would have bothered to find out about other cultures rather than just assuming yours is somehow superior.
Superior? Why? Because your imperialism has overpowered them militarily, stolen their natural resources, and after laying waste to their countries lured their best educated people away with promises of the American dream. You’re not exceptional. The Romans beat you to it by 2000 years.
