Your first carb rebuild Red Rider and with your fathers tools ,how satisfying is that !
Replacing those Philips type screws for the float bowl with Allen's makes removing them a no brainer. One of the problems is those screw aren't actually Philips, they are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws. They're a little bit different from each other. Guy's will try to remove them with a Philips screw driver instead of a JIS screw driver and strip them out. The angle on the blades of the screw drivers are different.
I purchased stainless steel Allen head screws for the bottom of the floatbowl. ALL those little phillips head screws strip at the head since the beginning of time. Thanks for Sharing.
Not phillips, they’re JIS.
Yes there's something people need to wake up to, thank God for dads
Great job on the carb enjoyed this thks for sharing.
Anxious to hear the Dyna run. Want a project bike, but can't right now. So I'm going to watch you work on the Dyna.
Thanks for the invite to your garage. : )
Well done red that was magic I have done that job heaps of times and you did that well 👍👍👍👍
Good job "Red", really enjoyed watching you do the first time out rebuild. Rebuilt many carbs myself, your doing well, keep up the good work, by the way, no worries, I Like you for sure.
Hi Red Rider! Thank you for sharing your videos! I find them very interesting and enjoyable!!
Thanks for watching!
Their is nothing to not like! You are a beautiful person and, you have beautiful bike's!
Red you are doing fine, for a first time rebuild it is how we all learned.
I have found that the CV Carburetor work pretty well and they are easy to tune. They are also easy to work on. Have fun and be safe.
Great job Angel.
Everyone loves u. Thanx
Thanks, Team Red
🤘
You didn't take too long rebuilding the carb, you covered every detail, nice work can't wait to hear it fire up.
Job well done for your 1st time rebuilding your carb.
Helps when you snuggly put in a mini vise.just a thought.great job!
Well done Red, you're a rare breed.
Old school maintenance.
I can never say it enough how awesome you are. Great video. 🫶
You're doing a great job red
Greetings From Siberia . Thank You for your response , I hope that you are happy ,healthy and doing well . I hope your build is going well , I have no doubt that you will make it all happen and that it will turn out the way that you want it . In regards to mounting the CV carb to the shovel , this should be a pretty straight forward install . You won't have any issues with the bigger ports in the S&S heads .The bolt spacing for the flange adapter is 2 3/4 inches center to center . This flange should be easy to find , most dirt bike or snowmobile shops should be able to supply this with no issues as these are commonly used .On second thought instead of possibly having to lengthen the free length of your shovel throttle cable , just use the throttle from the Dyna . You don't even have to get the 50 or 52 low speed jet if you just want to start it, but you will need them if you want to ride it . You will have to turn the mixture screw out about 2 1/2 turns out from seated. I haven't played with the one on my 73 XLCH in awhile because I got it dialed in real good and I ride different bikes throughout the riding season . Currently I'm riding my 77 XLCR Cafe Racer after a very long nap . You can play with the mixture screw as required to dial it in . I'm sure that you will like this, one of the nice things about a CV is that they only feed what the engine wants and they make for a real smooth running bike .Take care and keep up with the progress on the build and the videos . I'm going to try and send you some pictures of the fleet. If you have any questions, just leave a message and I will get back to you . From The North . Siberian Cycles . Gary
Hey Gary, thanks for your comment and for sharing you knowledge. I would %100 be into putting a CV carb on the shovel if it’s going to help it to preform better! I’m going to look into these flanges and see about setting this all up… I may have to look at buying a second CV carb so that I’m not out a carburetor for the Dyna! Probably will end up being a winter project.
I’m looking forward to seeing the pics of your fleet as well! My email is in the description to all my videos, in case you haven’t found it yet.
Have a good one!
Good job.🙂
Great channel
Another great video and the satisfaction of finishing a job is only beaten by the first time you ride a bike you have worked on yourself. Great job well done and thank you for just being you, keep doing what you are doing enjoy yourself and be safe much love from the Uk. Xxx 🙏✨😄✨
I really enjoyed redoing this carburetor
Carbs can be a mixed blessing. Had a peppy little Beemer beater built VW Rabbit with a carb. Gas in NYC often had crud in it in the age of gas lines. Got so good at rebuilding it anywhere that I once rebuilt it under midtown hotel marquee lights at ten pm on a Christmas Eve.
Still, I wish I still had that sleeper.
Legal cat delete, Canadian exhaust down pipe, rejetted with a Dasher oversized jet, anti sway bars front & rear.
Part of being a biker is learning to do their own routine wrenching.
Usually fun and always builds character.
It’s essential to know how to fix your own vehicles in my opinion.
Way 2 go...Red!!!!
When I bought my Road King it had sat for 5 years. First thing needed was flushing the old gas and rebuilding the carb.
GO RED GO!!!
much luv doll. eye startd my sturgis 2022 prep ping yesterday! im starting to get a lil excited!!
🤘😘🤘
💯👍 🙋♂️ carburetor looks great to me now that you rebuild it sounds like the owner before you did not know how to fix it at all had a bowl leaking was cranking down the screws the video is great
Thanku for this video I have a 96 Softail with the same carb and I need to do the same
I am now in the same boat, yesterday my 1983 FXDG (a special edition twin belt wide glide, aka the Willie G special or disc glide) arrived. Bike was parked and hasn't run for 8 years. I'll start with a wash and treat some small rust spots on the frame with rust fixation stuff. Then I'll go and get 2 new tires on it. I think I'll try to start it without doing a carb rebuild, just to see what happens.
Cool video I’m not the only slow mechanic lol 😂 👍
Greetings From Siberia . Another really well done video on a first time attempt at cleaning a carb .You did a good job , covered everything and were patient while completing this task .Patience is paramount when working on anything of a mechanical nature .It is really nice to see a young woman into motorcycles as much as you are and learning how to work on and maintain your bike .I can hardly wait to start teaching my granddaughter how to work on things , she is a real firecracker and curious about everything . I thank you for your response to my comments on your kickstart video .I do not have a website and am now retired , I'm busier now than ever and it's enough just trying to keep my fleet of dinosaurs in tip top shape . I forgot to mention in the kickstart video that a keihin cv carb like you just rebuilt would also be a good choice for your shovelhead .I run one of these on my 73 XLCH and it works really well .One of these mounted on your shovel will make kickstarting and all around riding and performance much better . My buddy Dan did this years ago when he got tired of dealing with a similar carb that you have on your shovel .It's been on his wall for years now . Nobody would ever be able to convince him to put that other carb back on .I think it would be a good idea for you to mount the cv to your shovel and try it out . You will need a inexpensive rubber mounting flange for a 38 mm Mikuni carb to mount it to the shovel manifold .You should be able to get this from a dirt bike or snowmobile shop or online easily .To do this you will also need a 50 or 52 slow speed jet for the cv carb .Install the 50 first , bolt the flange to the intake, install carb into flange and tighten the hose clamp .Your throttle cable may need more free length but this is easy to do. You can easily fab a support bracket and use the air cleaner from the dyna .I'm positive you will like the results from this and starting will be so much better for you . You have pretty much everything you need to do this so I think that it is worthwhile for you to do .That may be a aftermarket needle in the carb or someone may have put the washer underneath it to richen up the mixture You don't need a performance kit, I personally don't think anyone needs anything more than Harley needle 27094-88 if I remember the part number correctly .Buy the flange and jets and bolt it on. Shovel transformed . Keep the video's coming , I enjoy everyone of your adventures . On another note your ignition system may be causing you harder starting as well as some of these are not really designed for kickstarting . Old points ignitions work really well for a kickstart only bike. Only my 82 shovelhead FXR has a electronic ignition in it but I think I'm going to convert it to points .The rest of the fleet all had points ignitions stock . I like to experiment with things, the bikes in my fleet that were converted over to electronic ignition have seen been put back to points .Unless somebody told you you wouldn't know the difference . I think the old fossil has ranted on long enough for one night .Take Care . From The North ,Siberian Cycles . Gary
Hey Gary, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Will this flange you are talking about for mounting the cv to my shovel work for the S&S heads on my motor? The intake ports are bigger than stock on my heads, or the cv would have been on there already haha. Also, I did a first start on the Dyna after rebuilding the carb and it started up instantly and idles perfect… we will see how it sounds at operating temp after I get some other things sorted out.
And, on the Shovelhead ignition note: I got the thing started very first kick the last couple times I took it out! So that makes me hopeful haha. I had this thing as a one kick wonder for the first 5 years I rode it, I’ll get it figured out again I’m sure! I have a lot of comments to catch up on so if you have commented on some of my older videos and I haven’t responded it’s because I haven’t made it there yet.
Thanks again for sharing your experience and Stay warm over there eh!
Nice job ,did the same thing on my cv ! And changed the float bowl screw’s too 😆
Thanks for sharing your carb rebuild video! I hope you’ll release the full version someday. Great job on the rebuild! I’ve rebuilt more than a few carbs myself, those vacuum diaphragms are frail as they age. When I rebuilt the carbs on my girlfriends Honda Shadow Aero 1100 C3 (she just hit 50,000 miles on it) one of the vacuum diaphragms tore, it was cheaper to buy a good used one than to just buy a brand new vacuum diaphragm! So that’s what I did, plus the bonus of having extra carbs parts made it a no brainer for us. Thanks again, hope all is well with you and yours!
You can run that solvent through a paint strainer or coffee filter to make sure you're not putting any dirt particles into the carb since you're reusing it
good idea
Good job alot of riders wouldn't have attempted that right there Way to go good job GBU later
Hell yea Red , git er dun ✊
Nice job!
you did a great job great video as always young lady 👍
Just picked up a 94 wide glide yesterday. Great vids.
Congrats!! 👏
Nice job on the rebuild RED/Janis, always satisfying to be able to work on your own bike. I was hoping we were going to be able to hear it run. I guess maybe on the next one eh? You better cover up out there in that sun Ginger, but i'm sure you are very aware of that.. Be safe out there..
It's a good skill to be able to rebuild carburetors. Not too many people have that skillset today. Given a choice, I would rather install an aftermarket fuel injection kit, because fuel metering to the engine is so precise. S&S, Holley and others are all available for HD retrofits. This advice is from an "analog guy" in a "digital world". Electronic fuel injection is the best thing since sliced bread, Red.
👍
I love the video 's great content . Keep up the great work
Great job! New screws is the most satisfying feeling for a finishing touch on a quality carb build. Definatly adding the Phillips bit and hammer trick to my toolbox. no more pounding on my screwdriver. I have built alot of carbs and know how much of a pain leaving that accelerator pump part off is😂
It felt so good to get it all cleaned up inside.
Handy household hint, when I put the screws back in the cap that holds the diaphram cover or the float bowl I use a real light coating of Silver anti-seize on the threads, next time you take it apatt it comes apart nice, no galling of the threads. Also Stu is right about the JIS screwdrivers, they make stripped out screws a thing of the past. Vessel make a couple of real nice JIS sets you can get on Amazon.
Cool, thanks for tip!
Job well done angel!!!! Well done!!!
I had fun with it!
LOVE THE VIDEO. GOOD JOB YOUNG LADY.
Well done, Red Rider. I did my first carb a couple years ago. I love taking stuff apart...it really helps you learn how things work. The carbs on my bikes are much simpler than that Harley carb. I have an old Triumph 650 with a single Amal carb. I can take that carb off, clean the jets and put it back on the bike in 5 minutes (and I'm not that good at it.). I also have a 1975 Honda CB750, which has a rack of 4 carbs. Those take a few minutes to get off the motorcycle, but they're fairly simple carbs.
I had fun doing this. Definitely won’t be the last carb I rebuild!
Red, you can get some paper paint strainers at a parts store that sells paint supplies to strain your solvent to get the crunchy parts filtered out. As far as those tough screws, I find that the bits that come with the manual impact screwdrivers that you hit with a hammer do the best job on tough carb screws without trying to strip them out... unless you lose your favorite #2 phillips like somebody who shall remain nameless... (me)... I second the idea about using Allen head screws to hold on the float bowl... Gotta love a girl who seasons her chips with carb juice! :)
Lol gotta have my snacks when I’m working on the shop!
What a great video. It is a pleasure watching your presentatonal and video making skills evolve at a pace. Your friendly, relaxed, conversational attitude allied to your mechanical know how is just such a brilliant mix. I'm really looking forwards to seeing your new bike come to life - as well as your burgeoning online career. A star in the making!
I tend to skin my knuckles a lot more when I work on my stuff. My dna is all over my wide glide! LOL. Great video.
🎉 good job 😊
If you want to strain the solvent out , use a paint strainer the are disposalable work good
wait... what? um, did it start... ?
enjoyed watching! good job
(don't you hate when they used their John Deer screw tightener??)
marcus
I recommend Ultrasonic Cleaner for Carb cleaning Use Bits and a 1/4" hex bit driver Screwdriver must fit correctly, or brass parts get it . Bits can be filed , and or color coded .
I really enjoyed doing this rebuild. Maybe at some point I will pick up one of those sonic cleaners I hear about
A tip to loosen those tight screws is tap the screwdriver lightly as you put pressure down as you're turning (put the carb in a vise so you can use both hands)
Good afternoon Lil lady ☕☕💨✌
Great video!
CV Performance is the best with these Constant Velocity carbs Red, check ‘em out! Ride On. Oh, those aren’t Phillips head screws they’re JIS.
COOL
See there wasn't bad at all for a first timer . that was a good job ya did there hot rod . I've got a small vice on my work bench I use to hold the carbs . and use a magnet tray for screws and small parts .3 turns on the air jet might be a little much .I would have turned it in all the way counting the turns and set it back that way for a base tune . don't forget to check the butterfly shaft with the bell crank sloppy butterfly shaft give ya vacuum problem s .
Thanks!
Good job
Thanks 👍
It's always so satisfying after its cleaned up 👌 awesome video, even though I am late to the party 😂
Haha thanks. Better late than never!
You got me - Ill check this out tonight once the US House Jan 6 hearings have finished. Ill be looking at all of your detail. Last Summer I rebuilt my carbs after 30+ years of shellac while in storage - Be an Angel and please use a mask and glasses -
So I watched - and was trying to figure how your dad could build tripod mounts for your camera such that a closer view of things could be provided when at the work table.
I could probably buy something like that too
I am a big chicken when it comes to stuck screws. I know of mishaps where the screwdriver slips off the head of the screw while a good amount of pressure is being exerted, and unfortunately a hand is holding below. The ouch is a big one if it slips.
Gotta be careful!
Hi red I tried to send you a picture of my bike a while back but I'm old and not up on the computer stuff I also have 7 brothers and sisters and the oldest hang in there girl you will get it done got faith in ya old dude
I’ve got to catch up on my emails right now, I’ve got tons to read still!
how far will you go into this bike before you start moving forward? And curious what is your dads thoughts
🤟🏻
Those CV carbs can be a pain if they have sat for a long time. The hole for the accelerator pump get clogged and sucks to get clear
We took the accelerator jet out and cleaned it that way. Worked out really well! I put vid up of it..
Any recent sitings of Ogopogo Red? 😊
🤫
Not only do you ride Harleys, but you go to gun shows too!!! Every man's dream! LOL!!!
I love the gun show lol
Good job .
When you bought carb cleaner , did you get some shoes too ? ❣️
I put my shoes on today because I kept thinking of your comments pointing out my shoeless feet 😆
Thank you for putting on shoes .
I generally don't wear eye pro .
So you can limp and I'll squint .
I'll put on some glasses 🙄

BTW...I am a red head also.....all hail cinnamon bikers...ha ha
lol, repair kit for my carburetor in my country cost the same as a new one!
Jeez! No point in buying the kit then eh!
Use some Kroil, best machinist penetrating oil.
HEY wait a minute,You didn't show us you blowing out the IDLE PASSAGES WITH CARB CLEANER,that has to be done to be sure their flowing nice and clear and clean...
It was all done
Red, if you are interested in riding motorcycle, which I think you are, I would like you to take a look at the you tube channel of Itchy Boots. She has crossed into the U.S. from Mexico and heading your direction on her way to Alaska. I think to connect and chat might be pretty cool.
I’ve emailed her but no word back. It would be awesome to meet her even for a minute!

Looks more complex for some reason than a s&s shorty

Did you put some shoes on ?
😶🫡
Great job ... but you didn't start it up... Next Vid ?
Posted the start vid a couple days ago :)
Hey my friend, did you forget to pay your UA-cam rent? I had to go a long way through the suggestions to find you, next time I will just go to the subscription.
You have been talking about Itchy Boots, so I looked her up, she does grow on you doesn't she. I've been watching out of sequence sections of Alaska, still mostly in central America. I turn it off to do something and when I turn it back on she is a couple of weeks forward or back, no problem, all good and entertaining. I hope you get to meet her.
🤔 not too sure what’s goikg on in the UA-cam realm!
@@RedRiderCanadaBC Mystery helps to keep our brains working. The episodes are in order if I watch for a few hours, but when I turn it off and then back on several hours later it picks a different episode at random. I could stay in sequence using the subscription but it is not that important. With her wreck in the Nevada desert and a few days delay to recover she may have time to read some of the thousands of comments she gets everyday and maybe your email.
She responded to my email yesterday actually! She just doesn’t have time to do a meet a greet, which is understandable.
@@RedRiderCanadaBC She seems to push pretty hard, still sorry you didn't get your wish.
Night.
Is your cousin Vinnie?
Nope lol
I’m interested?
Saving is not about me! I love wasting gas and carb cleaner at every opportunity, whether it's necessary or not. :)))
Cause you like to revel in the smell of the chemicals!? 🤣😂😯
