You missed the part in the video where the "criminal characters" are also the heroes... the kid, they rescued from that first nasty house they broke into. He was locked/tied up in a closet. So there's a little dichotomy in the perspective played with there.
As to his sound... the singles are generally the most pop/radio friendly stuff he has. He is all about blues and R&B. He also throws a bit of his Irish folk heritage in there.

Something interesting about this song is that it’s in 5/4, which is one reason I think the guitar riff works so well, it’s almost like it’s pacing, going forward, pausing and backtracking
