The Fermi Paradox - Where Are All The Aliens? (1/2)

- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- The universe is unbelievably big - trillions of stars and even more planets. Soo… there just has to be life out there, right? But where is it? Why don’t we see any aliens? Where are they? And more importantly, what does this tell us about our own fate in this gigantic and scary universe?

Fun fact: The Fermi Paradox has a new option thanks to the books 3 bodies problem, and Dark forest. The new option states that the wall is other civilisations that are so advanced it would be like an ant trying to comprehend an elephant. The terrifying thing is, this could actually be right. We, Humanity may be feverishly screaming out to a universe that wants to eat us.
pretty kurz made a video about that too.
The scary thought is that we may someday be answered....by Cthulhu.

This is appeared in xcom,if i remember correctly
@@gandalf5306 I was hoping this was the one reply
Its terrifying if we're actually alone in an infinite void.
Its terrifying if we are actually being watched or something
Indeed. Sometimes the answer is closer than we think. If we are alone, it means one of two things: other civilisations exist/existed but can't reach us for a reason, or we are about to die out, because limited intelligence can only bring you so far, especially now that we have 'porn, Instagram models (men and women) of lighter intelligence, who are now considered a'perfect mate' by all men which means that dumb people obssessed with 'perfect Looks' are mating with other dumb people who are obssessed with the gym, plastic surgery, taking selfies etc but cannot find time to use their brain in reality and this causes a reverse in Darwin's theory of evolution, where the most 'intelligent and fittest' survive. Reminds me of the film 'Idiocracy'.In 5000 years it will only be plastic people left who will have to 'flex their abs' at climate change, new viruses and unknown bacterial infections, and threats from 'space'. Humans WILL die out.
Nope as we are alone it’s impossible for us to come in contact with other life even if they were out there or the humans have only accomplished so much in 400k years image what we will accomplish in on other 400k years we have no idea what’s possible

I personally think this paradox fails to take into account how impossibly large the universe is. On Earth we have planes and jets capable of traveling hundreds of MPH , satellites mapping the entire Earth and billions of people , however if I were to hide a marble at a random location on Earth there's a good chance nobody would be able to find it.
Regardless how large the universe is, the chance for life to arise on other planet (abiogenesis) is very very very small. Even in a perfectly habitable planet like earth, every single organism shares only ONE common ancestor.
Even if life were to exist on other planets, there's no guarantee they'd evolved into an intelligent species what more a space travelling one
Even IF there is life elsewhere, it'd take forever to know it. Light itself from distant stars takes millions of years to reach us here. An alien civilization trying to travel here would take vastly greater time. Add in that space itself is expanding further extending the distance. Probability says it's likely that other life is out there, but we'll just never know it.
a better analogy would be if the marble was instead a tiny speaker, that gets louder over time.
they sized it down to the milky way because of just how complicated and uncertain it would be to take EVERYTHING into account

The thought of being the only 'intelligent' species in the Universe might scare you, but maybe think of it like this: If it turns out we are all alone as mankind, you are one of the lucky few who actually gets to experience life in the most advanced way yet.
How is that even possible though? There's 200 billion to possibly 2 trillion galaxies in the universe. You would think mere probability would dictate that there's at least a few forms of intelligent life outside of our own supercluster even.
Are the odds of intelligent life just that scarce that even out of 2 trillion galaxies there's only one planet with this type of life?
@@AltairEgo1 But what if the odds of any life existing was so small that only one planet got it. Humans assume that because they exist others must but it’s possible that we are the luckiest things ever. Unlikely but possible.
No, no, it isn't one in the UNIVERSE, but it might be one in the OBSERVABLE universe. The universe is probably infinite in size, and if so, the only question would be what is the DISTANCE to the nearest one. If it's 100 light years, they're probably going to make contact soon. If it's a trillion, it's nothing one needs to be concerned with, they might as well not exist.
Although depressingly horrifying yes it can be seen that way and similarly, but its just simply quite impossible

I love the Fermi Paradox. Gotta be one of my favorite paradoxes.
The fourth possibility, a common scientific trope was not mentioned. That there could be multiple advanced civilizations that all interact and specifically avoid being noticed by civilizations not advanced to a level that is approved for interaction. Protect the child type of scenario.
@letslaugh2gether4 like in The Humans by Matt Haig !
*W O K E*
That's actually incredibly unlikely. It may not be apparent from how little it's talked about in media, but we have a pretty good understanding of physics and are watching the sky 24/7 with the most advanced technology available. To put this into perspective, we're able to detect the trace elements of a planet's atmosphere and crust based on the shadow it casts when it passes a star. For any civilization to operate on an intergalactic scale without us noticing requires them not leaving any detectable thumbprint on any known physics.
This requires them not having ships that radiate any waste heat, not having any dyson spheres, not communicating with anything on the EM spectrum, and more recently, not having any effect on space-time(so no worm-holes, no FTL, and no artificial or anti-gravity). A civilization like that wouldn't be operating on physics, they'd be operating on magic from our perspective.
A youtuber called Isaac Arthur goes into far more detail on to why this is very unlikely in his Fermi Paradox series. I'd highly recommend checking him out, he has an actual background in physics and will go over each specific point and the math behind it.
@letslaugh2gether4 I already did.

I was thinking that as well. Our observational astronomy ability is really still in its infancy. We have come a long way, but there's so much more out there. We're still trying to accurately detect all the asteroids in our planetary neighborhood and that is proving incredibly difficult.
good point man
Plus the fact that not all alien life may even be sapient or intelligent, yet alone be in a super advanced space age.
I think there definitely are spaceships.. Its imo a pretty easy bet.. The universe is so big only a fool would believe theres no other more advanced civilization out there.. Just look how far we as people got in a relatively short time-span.. The recently declassified information on UFOs didnt help this logic much either.. From what they ve been seeing, to me at least it seems like some kinds of automatic drones.. If they truly exist, what many people even airforce pilots claim they do as they see it often and have no idea what it is, my guess would be its simply something like scout drones, and those surely had to be deployed by a space ship, which might actually still be somewhere in our system..
All of this sounds like some crazy sci-fi, but the actual fact is that many of those things that seem like a sci-fi to us are actually scientifically possible, we are just not there at those levels yet, and might never be..
If those things hypothetically truly are of "alien" nature, my best bet on those things would be they are like some kind of up-close data gathering drones, and if those "aliens" are somewhere out there hiding in our system I would even bet they can initiate some semi-manual control of those drones to go and have fun with our airforce.. Some of those stories pilots have would explain that.. But there is also this question.. Why would they do these things.. Well if you try to think as this highly advanced being, I think you would want mostly these imo top 2 most important things: Information and a knowledge if those beings are of any threat to you.. I think they realized that we are no threat to them a long time ago, so why are they still here you might wonder, and imo the answer would be to a) make sure we dont become a threat even if they had to be here for a billion years and b) gather all the possible information you can about this planet.. Imo the most actually important thing this planet has is the life on it.. Everything and anything that is of a biological nature can have a high value as this is an actual real natural evolution of beings.. I imagine something like that might be hard to replicate even for these advanced "aliens".. It is possible they are making these discoveries in the name of science and I am pretty sure there is no end-point when to comes to science and biology.. I think you could experiment with these things forever and that might be my guess why you might not want to ever leave a planet on which you found any form of life, and might want to observe it indefinitely because you never know when you gather that small piece of data that is missing for the next big revolutionary breakthru in science or biology

zorohibiki what is this novel called, it sounds interesting and I would like to read it
@@jacobmartinez38 its a short story called radio silence is not really long here is all of it:
36,400,000.
That is the expected number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy, according to Drake’s famous equation. For the last 78 years, we had been broadcasting everything about us - our radio, our television, our history, our greatest discoveries - to the rest of the galaxy. We had been shouting our existence at the top of our lungs to the rest of the universe, wondering if we were alone. Thirty-six million civilizations, yet in almost a century of listening, we hadn’t heard a thing. We were alone.
That was, until about five minutes ago.
The transmission came on every transcendental multiple of hydrogen’s frequency that we were listening to. Transcendental harmonics - things like hydrogen’s frequency times pi - don’t appear in nature, so I knew it had to be artificial. The signal pulsed on and off very quickly with incredibly uniform amplitudes; my initial reaction was that this was some sort of binary transmission. I measured 1679 pulses in the one minute that the transmission was active. After that, the silence resumed.
The numbers didn’t make any sense at first. They just seemed to be a random jumble of noise. But the pulses were so perfectly uniform, and on a frequency that was always so silent; they had to come from an artificial source. I looked over the transmission again, and my heart skipped a beat. 1679 - that was the exact length of the Arecibo message sent out 40 years ago. I excitedly started arranging the bits in the original 73 x 23 rectangle. I didn’t get more than halfway through before my hopes were confirmed. This was the exact same message. The numbers in binary, from 1 to 10. The atomic numbers of the elements that make up life. The formulas for our DNA nucleotides. Someone had been listening to us, and wanted us to know they were there.
Then it came to me - this original message was transmitted only 40 years ago. This means that life must be at most 20 lightyears away. A civilization within talking distance? This would revolutionize every field I have ever worked in - astrophysics, astrobiology, astro-
The signal is beeping again.
This time, it is slow. Deliberate, even. It lasts just under five minutes, with a new bit coming in once per second. Though the computers are of course recording it, I start writing them down. 0. 1. 0. 1. 0. 1. 0. 0... I knew immediately this wasn’t the same message as before. My mind races through the possibilities of what this could be. The transmission ends, having transmitted 248 bits. Surely this is too small for a meaningful message. What great message to another civilization can you possibly send with only 248 bits of information? On a computer, the only files that small would be limited to…
Text.
Was it possible? Were they really sending a message to us in our own language? Come to think of it, it’s not that out of the question - we had been transmitting pretty much every language on earth for the last 70 years… I begin to decipher with the first encoding scheme I could think of - ASCII. 0. 1. 0. 1. 0. 1. 0. 0. That’s B... 0. 1. 1 0. 0. 1. 0. 1. E…
As I finish piecing together the message, my stomach sinks like an anchor. The words before me answer everything.
“BE QUIET OR THEY WILL HEAR YOU"

@@disphockunguy9731 Not really... technically we could have already discovered planets with life on them and just not fully know it. Because part of that lack of empirical data is technological. 4: most other advanced species killed themselves before they could develop enough high tech rockets to take them from place to place
5: we are in an alien zoo or we are prisoners of aliens
