I am from Claredon and at round 1pm the winds became heavier than earlier in the day and by 2pm to 5pm the winds and rain where overhelminly strong, I have not been that scared in a long time. At the moment there is no power,no water and no cell service, my neighbours have lost their roofs and power lines along with the posts have been broken in half or fallen down completely, those closer to the sea I cant even begin to image the damage they sustained, I feel sad for my people but grateful I still have life and home.

Around 95% of Kingston didn't get affected to my knowledge, where I'm from didn't get hit as much.
Beryl did put some places into Chaos with no electricity while other places are still ok with electricity right throughout the entire storm, My sister and grandmother from Westmoreland said it was nasty over there, They're still here and that matters the most, the houses can be repaired but a life can't be repaired. At the end of the day I'm glad Beryl was nothing like Gilbert.

Thanks so much for the coverage Irie. Foreign media (especially in the United States) doesn’t do a good job at providing comprehensive coverage of events going on in developing countries. This is where on the ground, independent journalism comes in.
I was actually in Jamaica from Jun 27-Jul 1 and got to see family before the storm hit. They’re in Christiana (Manchester) and thankfully they’re okay and their power has been restored. We can’t make light of the damage it’s had; but I am grateful that it’s not as bad as it could have been like we’ve seen with St Vincent or Grenada.
    Stay safe out there!

Thanks Irina. During loss of power and the absence of a generator, you could try using an inverter with your regular car battery as a source of electricity.
Inverters convert direct current (DC) from your car battery into alternating current (AC) that can power household appliances. To use an inverter, you can:
Connect the inverter to a 12V or 24V battery, preferably a deep-cycle battery, or several batteries wired in parallel.
Plug your AC devices into the inverter, just as you would into a regular electrical outlet.

You are totally right, thank you so much, this is very helpful! Why did I never think of that? We use a similar system on sailing boats... I should have thought of that!!...
I'm checking the Amazon now: the inverter Renogy 1000W Pure Sine Wave Inverter + deep-cycle battery Renogy 12V 100Ah AGM Battery, each within 350 USD or so price range. 🤔Is this the approximate price or am I getting some wrong info there? So, let's say my Macbook draws 60W while charging and my phone around 10W, then 70W in total... Assuming the efficiency of an inverter is 90%, we get around 1200Wh∗0.9=1080Wh, so the runtime would be 1080Wh/70W≈15.43 hours. Hmmm, pretty good!
Do you know a reliable shop to get deep-cycle batteries and inverters in Jamaica? Also... the charger for the battery, solar panels and solar charge controller..? 🥹🙏 I wonder if the yacht shop will have all!

As for the future - I am an IT Consultant with a lot of experience in solar, Lithium, etc, the only way you can be sure of being able to upload videos, soon after the storm, is Starlink and either solar/batteries but easier for you a generator - I prefer lithium LifePo4 batteries which are safe from fire issues, but a generator is cheaper in the short term, but will not help you if long term power failure as unlikely to be able to get fuel for a while.

Thanks Irena for information us about the after math, of what has been happening in Jamaica after the storm. There will be a lot to be done to ensure that damages will be a minimum in the future. People are going to say the government should do this or that but the government can only do so much, unless they want their taxes to go sky high.People will have to get together and form groups in their communities to do what they can to make things better. Richer countries should be contacted for assistance. Thanks again for putting yourself out there to bring us the latest information.

There are a lot of branches and trees from the root that have fallen in Montego Bay. Some light poles were affected hence there wasn't electricity for some time but everything began to return to normal from tge same day, everyone worked through making things get back to normal again.
Hopefully by next week everyone will have electricity again and water or anything that affected them. ❤

I just think are you amazing to do these videos. An exciting scholar and documentarist. Fun to watch from our prospective. A beautiful country I'm sure that time has not touched since colonial times. When I moved to New Orleans it was the same experience a while ago. You want to change it but then the longer you stay you want to preserve it with everything you have. Maybe visit the German settled villages for a documentary. They will disappear too. Then do a rum tour and I will drink with you. These videos are a breath of fresh air.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  8 днів тому +11

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that! What is the name of the resort? If they cancelled, they probably have some serious consequences. I know that hotels in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are operating, Half Moon, Round Hill, Couples - all are running as usual. Some hotels in Negril should be working as well, need to check with the Traveller's resort, see youtube @Throp - he is a co-owner of a resort in Negril and also has a youtube channel, he might be able to help! So, if you still wish to come in 2 weeks - you certainly can! I'm not sure what will happen with Reggae fest yet.. I'm looking into this as well.

8:34 That noise is not the sound of a generator. It's the sound of the eyewall of Beryl in the distance. I have heard it too here in Grenada when Beryl passed 30 to 40 miles north of my area.

I'm glad you mentioned the incorrect footage of other islands because it put me in a greater state of terror as I worried about whether or not my aging parents were ok., and I was not ok with that misrepresentation! They live in a fairly safe area for hurricanes, up.in Manchester Parish in Bellefield. Luckily I got a hold of them through a phone call and they're fine but since then they still have no power and I'm sure their phones are dead now.

Glad you called out the fake news. CNN interviewed an American couple who claimed their MoBay "resort" had no safety plans for their guests, and ran around mobay getting their own emergency snacks. If they must be staying at a "hole in the wall" hotel. The Bahia Principe in Runaway Bay told their guests not to leave the property, to stay in their rooms, and Room Service would bring anything they required. This couple apparently posted on FB about their "terrible experience".
Here in Runaway Bay we had a massive spothodea tree uprooted, a lot of branches torn from different types of trees.
On the road into Ochi, near the Dunn's River Falls entrance, beside the whicker furniture place, a big tree fell down and snapped a JPS pole, the power lines on the ground. 4 hours later JPS was there with a new pole.
