- Russia is far more willing to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield than Nato, a study by the International Institute for Strategic Studies has suggested.
Tactical nuclear weapons are small, but powerful munitions that can be used to destroy large concentrations of troops, armour or even target enemy headquarters.
Nato sees these weapons as a last resort, but it seems Russia does not share that view, according to William Alberque, the director of strategy, technology and arms control at the IISS.

It's impossible for Russia to have maintained any of theirs. Russia has 17x as many tactical nukes but they have less than NATO if you only count the working ones. We also have more ICBM's but their dormant tactical nukes are cute 😂

When one country faces more enemies it needs to reinforce its defenses massively to counter potential threat.
But how many of them actually work?
This is actually a very good question. It is well known that a huge amount of supercomputing power is dedicated to answering this question and the answers are obviously classified. All tested nukes were brand new when detonated, nobody has tested a nuke that has been in storage since the Cold War.

Russia has developed new nuclear weapons that would have been banned by prior treaties.
We, the Western nations in general, are not "beating the drums of war" - we are listening to those who are.
It would be irresponsible not to prepare a defense against these public threats... and because we are democracies we DISCUSS these things publicly.

Its so pointless having such absurd numbers of nukes, considering its unlikely anyone is going to ever get to use them before their replaced even more so. All you really need are enough to be able to credibly be a threat to the biggest economic centre's of the enemy country plus some redundancy, thousands of nukes is just a supreme waste of money.
Given the choice of pointless ego military spending, at least the US's stupid amount of aircraft carriers allows them to lose a load without it being at least as crippling as it would be to a country with a normal amount. Spending loads on mothballing a few thousand nukes for no reason is just pointless, its not like all of them or even just most of them are ready to fire they'll just be sitting in stockpiles needing to be maintained and thats just where'd they'd be if there ever was a nuclear war in which those stockpiles would be one of the first targets.
I'd say we have a pretty good setup, but we could certainly do with a bit more rather than be as reliant on the US as we are now. But then really we could say that about pretty much everything.
