Hi Anita, what a wonderful tribute to your Dad. I really enjoyed your tour of his birthplace. The architecture was stunning and I loved all the beautiful ornate doorways. It was interesting to see the magnificent old post office turned into a lovely hotel and cafe and the old prison converted into a cultural center and library. The church spire photo showing it being broken off in the storm was amazing. Thank goodness they were able to re-build it. It was very brave of you and your grandson to climb the high tower. Fabulous views from the top. I enjoyed learning about the history of the city and its famous residents. It was interesting to learn that Frisian has its own language, like Wales. Yes, Frisian is a recognised language and widely used in the province. It is such a special place. My dad had three 'stay overs' in the prison during the war. The Germans kept catching him and he kept escaping. The church is what I dub, Our Family Church. Loved climbing the tower with Max in 2018. My dad climbed it too. Mata Hari, a legend amongst brave ( disputable 🤣)women was born in Leeuwarden - dancer and spy, to mention another famous person. I'll be back to Leeuwarden later in the year. Hi Anita really nice tour to see the city of your father's birth. That railway station was so gorgeous and the preserved kiosk was lovely. The former prison was a beautiful building and so was the post office. Basically it was all stunning with its wonderful architecture around especially that church and wonderful spire, good that it was rebuilt after the storm. Hi Anita, loved the railway station and town where your dad was born. The fountain was lovely. So many beautiful buildings. Some of the Large post offices in the uk they have turned into restaurant/bars. The church was stunning, cant believe the spire broke in a storm. Wow very brave climibimg up the tower. Leeuwarden was where I lived for almost 6 years during my teenage time. This city had a profound effect on me and my love for Leeuwarden goes deep. There is such a history and specialness about the place. Not to mention the family connections. As the capitol pf the province, Leeuwarden does it well. There's a silly fashion over here where bikes no longer have them. Fashioned after mountain bikes. We DON'T have mountains and we don't need to save every once by dumping the mudguards because we're not racing them.
