Awesome!! I was 8 years old and already a 3 year wrestling fan. One of my earliest memories {of anything at all} was my cousin and I watching Ox Baker on tv and yelling at him. I was either 5 or 6 at the time. I also remember very vividly the first time I ever heard Dusty Rhodes speak. He was a heel at the time and I was very young but even then I recognized the charisma he had.
This was during the Battle of Atlanta when the NWA backed Georgia Championship Wrestling went head to head with Ann Gunkle's All-South Wrestling Alliance. I would love to see the shows from that promotion since she had a lot of the guys who worked for her husband working for her.
Mr Wrestling was in the Ric Flair crash in 1975 not the Bobby Shane crash. The Bobby Shane crash was Bobby Shane, Buddy Colt, Playboy Gary Hart and Mike McCord(Austin Idol) in 1973.
@lastwolflord Truth be told, I have no clue about the origin of the source tape. I was digging through some old files I had downloaded years ago and stumbled across this. It would be great if there was more stuff from this era floating around, I'm guessing this aired years later as part of some "Mat Classics" retrospective or something like that.
You are correct. Woods wore an all-white mask. Walker wore a white mask with black around the eyes for most of the time (a couple of times after the Assassin pulled his mask off, Walker wore one of Woods' extra masks)
Two years before he saved wrestling in the Carolinas by showing up for work a couple days after a plane crash... Mr. Wrestling Tim Woods sold like crazy for our MidSouth Mafia Don, Cowboy Bill Watts. These were two guys who made wrestling REAL.
IN HIS YOUNGER DAYS BILL WATTS HAD THE MENTALITY OF BUFORD PUSSER. WOULD'VE LOVED TO SEE HIM IN THE ORIGINAL FILM OF WALKING TALL. BUT JOE DON BAKER NAILED IT.
@TarheelTad64 im thrirty one yrs old and im a fan of the old territory days and the mid atlantic territory was a great one especially the late 70's to the late 80's
The 70's was the Golden Age of WRESTLING (NOT sports entertainment BULLSHIT). All the great NWA territories, St Louis(crown jewel of the NWA), Florida, Georgia, Mid Atlantic, Mid South, Kansas City, Texas, SF, LA and Portland. I kept informed through the magazines and UHF TV channels. I'm a mark and proud of it. Titles meant something in that era. Now you got guys winning belts 8, 9 or 10 times which devalues the belt. It's a shame what vkm did to this great business.
Hey Mike you forgot Southeast/ Gulf Coast/ MidAmerica in your Territorial rollcall! As well as the endlessly inventive and influential CWA Memphis.B.W.
This man in wrestling 💍 ring he was one of the best in the beginning in the wrestling 💍 ring he became Mr wrestling number one 1 Tim woods after Johnny Walker comes along and there he go Mr wrestling number two 2 Johnny Walker in your home 🏡 town in Augusta Georgia Howard Youngblood from Augusta Georgia remember you people on Monday night wrestling card card at the best of the beginning Inez Youngblood is a wrestling fan also from Augusta Georgia
No, Woods wasn't in the Tampa plane crash that killed Bobby Shane -- Woods was in the North Carolina crash a few months later that injured Flair, Valentine, and Bruggers. The passengers in the Tampa plane crash besides Bobby Shane were Gary Hart and "Iron" Mike McCord (later known as Austin Idol), with Buddy Colt piloting.
If I remember correctly there was a dispute between 2 the because II used Mr Wrestling's ID in this matc. Also Gordon calls him Wrestling II close to the end. Gordon had a knack for calling the masked wrestlers their names at times
@@texaswrestling9249 Nope, he is right. Thats Johnny Walker They did an angle where Tim Woods unmasked and Mr Wrestling II (Johnny Walker) became simply Mr Wrestling. The two would feud before eventually reuniting with Walker returning to the Mr Wrestling II moniker
Now that you pointed it out, it's fairly obvious to me. Therefore I imagine Gordon and Les knew. So I wonder... Maybe Johnny Walker wrestled twice on this card, as #1 & #2. I find it interesting that we didn't see Tim Woods at ringside, running in, doing the switch, etc. EDIY: My quick Google search says Watts took the strap from #2 on this date. I guess it's just a simple mistake that isn't as interesting as I wanted it to be.
Its not Walker. It is Tim Woods. Walker adopted the Wrestling II moniker when Woods unmasked to get a shot at the NWA title. Also, Walker is much more squatter than Woods and Walker's mask had black around the openings while Woods' was all white.
Wonderful time for pro wrestling. The '70's were THE decade for great territories all over the U.S..
60's
My hero Mr wrestling

What a match! Not often I get to see the original Mr. Wrestling, and Bill Watts for that matter!
Amazing to see this. I was very young in North Carolina the first time I saw Mr. Wrestling, sometime around '69-'70.
Gordon Solie said wrestling 2 towards the end when he got pinned, but that was the great Wrestling 1 also known as Mr wrestling
Thank you for posting this. What great memories. BTW this is definitely tim woods the original mr wrestling. I grew up going and watching him.
I was three weeks old when this was aired, wow..
Mr Wrestling was in the Ric Flair crash in 1975 not the Bobby Shane crash. The Bobby Shane crash was Bobby Shane, Buddy Colt, Playboy Gary Hart and Mike McCord(Austin Idol) in 1973.
Bobby Shane plane crash was also from 1975, in February.

Wow, never have seen anything from Georgia this old. Very cool.
Now this is the kind of Wrestling I like to watch.
Allen Roberts,-you're wrong-that's Woods EXACT style and body!
It's not Johnny Walker--it's Tim Woods, as Mr. Wrestling.
You are correct. Woods wore an all-white mask. Walker wore a white mask with black around the eyes for most of the time (a couple of times after the Assassin pulled his mask off, Walker wore one of Woods' extra masks)
The date of this match: May 18, 1973.
May 11th* it's in the Title reigns for the Georgia Heavyweight title.
I'm from North Carolina and there was nothing like mid-atlantic championship wrestling
There never be anything like it again

THANK YOU , THANK YOU, THANK YOU.. ! FROM ST. LOUIS.. WRESTLING AT THE CHASE .. SAM MUCHNICK... .. WE THANK YOU..
IN HIS YOUNGER DAYS BILL WATTS HAD THE MENTALITY OF BUFORD PUSSER. WOULD'VE LOVED TO SEE HIM IN THE ORIGINAL FILM OF WALKING TALL. BUT JOE DON BAKER NAILED IT.
Back when they 'earned' muscles
the old way - non steroids.
@opwatchdog There are a couple of others, including one match where Woods faced Mr. Wrestling II
Do you possibly have any clips from around 1975 or '76 during the days when Thunderbolt Patterson was fueding with the Andersons????
Tim Woods was my favorite wrestler
Do you have anymore from that time 1973-76 Georgia Championship Wrestling. I think Jim Garvin was around that time to as a manager
TIM WOODS VS BILL WATTS...AWESOME
Funny seeing Watts with hair!
@opwatchdog There are other clips on UA-cam of Mr. Wrestling. Look up Mr Wrestling and Blackjack Mulligan.
i was 14 when this was aired.
@TarheelTad64 im thrirty one yrs old and im a fan of the old territory days and the mid atlantic territory was a great one especially the late 70's to the late 80's
This shit is great. Where’s a good place to start
Went to gradeschool in Georgia with a kid named Dale Botts who always wore cowboy boots. Guess what his nickname was? Yep, Mr. Wrestling.
I was gonna guess Bill Watts...

Hey Mike you forgot Southeast/ Gulf Coast/ MidAmerica in your Territorial rollcall! As well as the endlessly inventive and influential CWA Memphis.B.W.
Two great commentators
great clip
Mr Wrestling better technical fighter : hard to see the better man lose to cheap shots here
Watts working heel great find here.
Watts was great as face, heel, promoter and matchmaker. I believe his first heel turn was against Bruno Sammartino in the mid-'60s WWWF.
sounds like indian war drums in the arena.
How the hell did you get recordings from 73?
I always thought Watts was a babyface.
ahh Husky Harris wore the same boots as Watts. I see the similarities in body shape.
That was homage to his grandfather, Blackjack Mulligan who also wore that style of boot.
Holy shit that camera quality
This kind of wrestling went all the way until the WWF Attitude era came about.
scissoring leg guard. I can't imagine any wrestler today performing that, much less knowing what it is.

Bill Watts was a "strange enigma", eh? I guess Solie was a "redundant repeater"!
That opening was tight. Looked way more legit than todays shit
my brother and i had 1 and 2 masks and watched this stuff for years only seeing 1 once in a blue moon
Was Watts a heel here? I noticed the fans cheered for him at the end of the match. The old school wrestling fans would boo a heel out of the building
i respect these legend and love the old school stuff but that whole match was put togeather so bad lol
4:42 highlight of the match when Watts tries to sit out spin and NCAA champ Woods blocks him
5 dollar rasslin by highspot's is pretty close
Les Thatcher was on "True Life" on MTV training a wrestling wannabe.
The original Mr. Wrestling, Tim Woods. He was in the plane crash that killed Bobby Shane two years later.

Watts was the og thicc boi
great match and post... I don't get the 5 thumbs down? must be fans of today's W.W.E. garbage.
Mr wrestling tim woods.
Not Tim Woods, look at the way the mask fits as well as the upper thighs. Definitely #2
If I remember correctly there was a dispute between 2 the because II used Mr Wrestling's ID in this matc. Also Gordon calls him Wrestling II close to the end. Gordon had a knack for calling the masked wrestlers their names at times
I want to be a crow-boy...
And you can be my crow-girl
☺😊😊
that is wrestling # 2
No it isn't
Wrong
@@texaswrestling9249
Nope, he is right. Thats Johnny Walker
They did an angle where Tim Woods unmasked and Mr Wrestling II (Johnny Walker) became simply Mr Wrestling.
The two would feud before eventually reuniting with Walker returning to the Mr Wrestling II moniker
@Wayneman117 What's funny about that???
This is the only known clip of Mr Wrestling in action...very nice!
☺
@christlike06
Nothing out there.
Would you buy a used car from Les?
That's not Woods. It's Johnny Walker. Don't know why they billed him this way, but it's most certainly Walker.
Now that you pointed it out, it's fairly obvious to me. Therefore I imagine Gordon and Les knew.

At 3:46, Mr Wrestling uses his signature standing inside cradle-100% a Tim Woods move.
