  • Im taking you on a tour of my Granny Pod, or Nana Cottage. It is a perfect way to downsize over 60. A granny pod is a tiny home built, or placed, on the same property as the home of someone who will look after the occupant. Having their own living space gives the senior some privacy while the proximity to the caregiver makes it easier for them to monitor their loved one's health and safety. #granny pod. #tiny houses #mature lifestyle

I want some land where I would be allowed to put about six of these on it with full utilities and have older woman friends who are now alone all have a living space where we can look out for each other.

I sold my big house and used the equity as a downpayment for my daughter's house . I then had a tiny house on wheels built. It is parked on my daughter's property. I am a major part of my grandson's lives. I help with homeschooling, driving the boys to activities etc.

Oh Wow Margaret! My mother has never worked and she never would be this active in my son's lives. I had to put my children in daycare because of no family support and this crushed me. My youngest was only 15 months old at the time. My Mom will have the boys over for a weekend or overnight sometimes, but nothing like what you do. So special!

My sister homeschools her two grandsons teaching them about God and the Bible where you’re not gonna hear about it in school. Of course all the other curriculum too and the boys are far more advanced than those in public schools.

I wanted to do that but the area my son lives in does not allow "trailers" parked in the back yard. He has a nice large pond. It would have been nice to sit out on a patio and watch the ducks in the pond.

What a loving son you have to be so generous & thoughtful to want you so close in his life and litterally make room for you and your lifestyle (converting his recording studio into your excercise studio). A lot has changed in our American culture with family.

Just stumbled across this video and it reminded me of seeing this scenario played out years ago when I dated a woman whose grandmother lived in a small cottage on her parents property. There were actually three houses on the property: the parents big colonial home… The daughter’s cottage… And the grandmother’s cottage very close to hers. All three homes were close to each other but still there was lots of acreage and beautiful space to spread out. The shared family living experience was an eye-opener for me that I’ll never forget. It’s a wonderful concept as long as families love and respect each other, which this family did. There was such a sense of individual space, yet community as well. Made a huge impression on me!

We have a big home and a few months ago, we asked our son, his wife, and baby daughter to move in with us. My son is renovating their home to sell. Our plan is to build a Grand Cottage in the back yard where we have about two acres. They will live in the big house and we are excited about it as they’re expecting another baby in June. It has been an adjustment but overall, it’s worked out well. I’m looking forward to building our cottage! I think it’s the best to live this way!

Down sizing can be so difficult for some that have collected “things” that they can’t part with. I have no stove same appliances you have and a mother in law suite in my daughters house, separate entrance, deck, bedroom, attic for storage. I’m at peace knowing there won’t be days going through things and tossing, donating, it’s done. I have my space but the door to connect to their house opens morning, day and night with the faces of my children and grandchildren, moved from NY to KY, priceless.

My Mom is 73 and still in her big house she had with Dad. She has expressed wanting to down size for a while now, but my older sister who lives out of state keeps telling her to stay in her big house since it's paid off (personally I feel my sister wants her to stay so there is a pool and extra space for her when she visits). I wish I had property like this to have a cottage for my Mom to reside in close to us. I've been through a divorce and in financial ruins because of it. My sons would love to have their Grandma so close. Something like your situation would be a dream at this point. I wish so many things, but bottom line is you have to have money to make a beautiful living situation like this possible. You are truly blessed and so is your son.

My great-grandmother had 9 children and as she got older and my great-grandfather passed away, she had a "nana cottage" built on the property of each child in the early/mid fifties deep in the hills of Morgan County Kentucky. They were all very poor coal mining people and it wasn't much but it kept her close to her family. I went back to visit that area of my ancestors about 5 years ago and those buildings are still standing.

Lovely story and great for your mom that her family could do that and it must bring memories to visit and i would say a lovely place. But it seems most here are talking wealth like selling big house in expensive areas and having well off sons daughters building beautiful small homes for them so this vidoe is only really about the previliged. Sandra live in a big house in New Jersey but live in affluent south Beach Miami so not a struggling senior. i don't begrudge them just pointing out they are very lucky.

It’s beneficial for the elderly to live with the family instead of leaving in a nursing home. My son and I both sold our houses and bought a 3 story, 4,000 sq ft home. I live in the "basement" which is finished and opens to a lovely patio. My kitchen is a counter with a small sink, but, like you, I have a big convection toaster oven, an air fryer and the asian hot pot cook top, a microwave and even more electric cooking gadgets. My place is totally independent of my sons area. I even purchased myself a huge portable washer and electric dryer. Its great and the move gave my son and his family a lot more room. My place is 1,300 sq ft, and I only use half of it!! Lol. I have many health issues, so its good to have them near by.

Hi Sandra, Your Granny pod is just as I new it would be. A reflection of you, cozy, comforting and close to family ...the most important thing. Having a porch is so special. Just to have a private space where you can work, edit and yet when you need a break you have the beauty of those gorgeous grounds. Butterball is so adorable!! Our son is talented like yours and has gutted and remodeled several homes and I’m seriously considering having him build a granny pod for me for visits and then it would be ready when I retire. Thanks so much for sharing this precious space. Sending love and hugs.....Sherry

He said it would also be for later on if I needed to be there full time. I really do enjoy that porch because it allows me that extra space with nature all around. Sherry, it really is the best alternative to spending time with you family and preparing for the future. ❤️

Cherie, thank you so very much. Sometimes it’s kind of wild but I just have to let it have a life of its own!❤️

I don’t mind the cottage life because it is only for 3/4 months a year and the plus of having my independence and still be near part of my family is a nice break from the Florida hot summers. ❤️

Kitt, that is so very true. This summer because of Covid we will not be going to Nashville this summer it looks like. In some way, I feel lonely because my children are so far away, but we do FaceTime and speak to one another. It’s not the same, but it’s better than nothing. How wonderful that you are happy with yourself. I always feel very sorry for those who need outside entertainment to be happy. I never want to be alone, but if it winds up that I am, I think I will be able to be happy because I can self-entertain. That is a wonderful survival tool, for sure. Thank you so much for sharing today and I’m so happy that you are here.❤️

I can’t tell you how blessed I feel that he did this for me. It gets so hot in Florida during the summer, that this year because of Covid I couldn’t travel. The heat in the summer really got to me. I’m glad he has given me a place near him and his family to spend some time away from Florida. ❤️

Hi Sandra ! I absolutely would love a grandparents pod! I missed out buying a lot next to my daughter and I'm so mad I didn't jump on it! We would all benefit from this. Us having our own privacy and quiet times and her being a single mom would so benefit from us being close! Of coarse being in Nashville is a huge plus! This is warm inviting and beautiful . Good for you ! I'm going to look into these ! Hugs Barb 💕

Oh, what a missed opportunity. You really should think about a granny pod though to be near your daughter if you can. I wouldn’t be able to spend much time with my grandchildren if my son hadn’t done this for us. ❤️

Five years ago we sold our house and bought a duplex. My son and his family live on the other side. This was the absolute best thing I ever did. They help us out every day. Just a few minutes ago, my granddaughter was over here to help me give our cat his meds. The previous owners had much the same situation. Son on one side taking care of his parents on the other. He even cut a hole thru the coat closets so he didn't have to go outside. We have found that to be invaluable.
