The Honda XR600R off-road racer that was discontinued for over a decade, the Honda XR650L dual-sport motorcycle is back after 30 years, based on the successful and long-discontinued Honda XR600R. There may be no official celebration of Honda's 30th anniversary of this classic motorcycle, but the pearl anniversary is approaching, and this edition is white - perhaps that's a sly nod to the company's hard work and accomplishment. As for the 2023 Honda XR650L, let's go over what it has to offer, despite being essentially unchanged from its 2017 predecessor.
This motor is constructed with a double overhead cam design, which is a contemporary valvetrain design. It is however an air-cooled design, which is fed by a 42mm CV carburetor that feeds the combustion chamber of this engine. Thus, it is important to note that the new 2023 Honda XR650L has two items that we seldom see on a motorcycle in the 2020s: a manual choke and a petcock. As a bonus, you will be able to start the engine with an electric motor.
In 2022, the XR650L, also known as the dinosaur as I like to call it, will be returned and updated with a few new changes and improvements. When Honda introduced the XR650L, they combined the off-road chassis of the XR600 with the electric start engine of the NX650, creating one of the most capable dual-sport bikes that had ever been on the market.
The 2022 Honda XR650L, Honda changed the graphics on the tank and they swapped out all of the red plastics in favor of white plastics to match the new graphics on the tank. The XR650L this year is also fitted with black wheels and the "lollipop mirrors" have been replaced with a set of modern mirrors to create a more modern look.
It is estimated that the MSRP for the 2023 Honda XR650L will be $6999. In today's dollars, its 1993 price of $4349 would be over $8500 if inflation is adjusted for it. Considering this, it is quite a deal for this classic to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The last time we tested the XR650L was seven years ago, and this year we have plans to revisit it for a second time.

Just received my 2023 Honda XR 650L-went straight to my motorcycle shop for $1350. of aftermarket stuff. My last bike was a 2018 Husq 701 enduro and before that 2017 KTM 690R. Of course those bikes were much faster with better suspension; however there was always something leaking, shop stripping out bolts, and high dollar maintenance stuff going on. I have had 3 XR 650L's in the past also. I went back to the most dependable and easy to maintain bike. I am 61 years old, this is MY BIKE from now on.
What are the aftermarket things you put in it?
What did you have added to the XR650L? How does it ride at 75-80? Buzzy? I’m coming from a KLR650 and love the Honda but have never ridden one.
This bike is a living legend.!!! My all times favorite. The perfect round the world trip dual sport bike, its all you need for riding on any type of terrain, excellent ground clearance, quite comfortable for what it is, light enough for off road with plenty of power for streets and highways and its a really cool looking bike. You cant go wrong with this monster machine.
It might be old and out dated design, but it will be running when all the new bikes are dead and gone.
I have an old KDX220 that is like that. A dinosaur that still runs like a champ.
and underpowered
@@suzyamerica4679kdx's are amazing bikes, great smell and sound.
I've owned more dirt and road bikes than I can remember off hand. Currently own a Beta 300 Xtrainer, WR250F and a Triumph Scrambler 1200...and my second XR650L, the most reliable bike I've ever owned! Not light. Too tall. Homely. But everything a doomsday bike should be! Runs on the rankest fuel. Remarkably easy to fix. Killer aftermarket options! My minimum recommendations for upgrades would be to install the Dynojet carb kit, replace the muffler with the FMF Q, and riser Renthal bars. Then purchase the shop manual and have fun!
Great bike, it's iconic, I have the original XL600R, it still running strong, and does everything I ask of it.
I have an older model Honda XR 650 and just bought a 2021 Honda CRF 300, but when I was getting my new 300, I noticed the 2023 Honda XR 650 sitting there on the display floor and went over to check it out. Not used to the white color, but I like it and I might get it. My 2002 Honda XR 650 is older but still runs great and has been very tough and reliable for years but may be time to upgrade and get a newer version of the same bike.
I Love my 2022 XR 650l & it's fun to ride. It is my 2 one Long live the Big Red Pig. Thanks Honda
Ok so it has not changed at all . Good
Ive owned 3 since 1993. Great bikes overall especially for my height 6 6. I sure was getting exhausted riding the tight trails after 56 yrs old though LOL. I would buy another one if it could lose 30lbs or more and get fuel injected!
I’m 6’7 and was thinking about getting this for my first bike. I’d love an Africa Twin but it’s a bit much for a first bike I think
Too bad there’s no such bike even close to that with this sort of power. Efi is practically useless for this kind of bike. Sounds like you should go buy a yamaha xt250
i hope it never changes, sm ordering one, having its little brother it would a deer family possession. we ❤ it.
It Is a Dinosaur ? Yes, could be...but this Honda has something magic and provide sensations like no others, is a classic, virtualy indestructible with a minimum maintenance ! other big example of Honda reliability..
Well I sold 3 bikes cr250r, Ducati 750 monster, Honda Valkyrie tour and bought a 2024 xr650l 3 days ago best bike to own, I had one back in the early 90s and sold it , wanted one everyday since, got one now and will never sell it again
The only thing changed in nearly 30 years is just the color scheme
2016 owner here & no regrets it takes me everywhere!!
Ride safe Ride red!!
It's nice to see a Honda not change this bike much, When something still works and does what it made to do well, why change it. I think it's great when a company knows when they have a good product.
I just purchased a XR650L today. 9k out the door. I almost laid it on its side unloading it out of my pickup. Thankfully my neighbor saw me wrestling to hold it up. Its a heavy bike. Cant wait to ride it.
Very nice ! 👌👍
I saw one today at santa barbara motorsports ..it was absolutely beautiful. I want one so bad
i love this kind of motorbike..
I love it my favorite dual purpose motorcycle
This is so funny , great bike that never dies
Bring back the Honda XR200 also please...
U know Y because XR'S RULE.
Thanks from NOR-CAL.
best ever a all I just get my 2 weeks ago 2023 XR650L. 🎉jut put the big gum mofler and ready to go with a better sound
I like it, I think I am going to get one
Considering selling my 22yz450f to get a new xr my ‘97 is pretty worn out
And for where I live I have to drive 150+ miles to find trails to ride the yz and if I have a new Xr650l I could ride the forest road that’s 20 miles away much more usable the Xr650l that is.
This engine is Bomb Proof, not the fastest Big Single but definitely the Best!!
My favorite bike 👍
I’m going to sell a few of my bikes and buy one of these
Starter is fine, but to make it really rugged and reliable bring back the kick start. Love my 1985 xl600r more power than this 650cc also 😂 dual carbs
👍 Bullet proof
If you think it’s heavy or outdated then I suggest you go look at all the other available dualsport or adv bikes… if they weigh less the power is too low and the power to weight is garbage. Most dualsport and adv bikes or even regual trail dirtbikes have double digit ratios and the xr stands out as one of the very few in the single digits… it might weigh 346lbs but keep in mind a damn honda rebel 300 weighs 364lbs… these bikes move and if you don’t believe it you’re missing out big time.
Do you think air cooled will be a problem for people living in the hot desert, not sure why they couldn’t make it water cooled
Air cooled is no problem. They will never change it as long as they produce it because if they make any modifications then they have to pass new smog requirements and not the one that they are currently grandfathered into 30 years ago
The seat appeared to be way to narrow for a 650.
This motor has not double overhead cams
Needs inverted front forks
“and this edition is white - perhaps that's a sly nod to the
company's hard work and accomplishment.”
Huh?
This is the bike of a guy with a chain saw on one of Itchy Boots episode and she can't keep up with the guy of course not her is 300 Rally the guy is 650L he is clearing the road from fallen trees nice episode.
Since it is Honda, I am not too impressed with the antiquated looks, unless the engine & all around performance makes up for the lack of keeping up with KTM, Husqvarna, Yamaha, and for that matter, even Kawasaki in the same class of Enduros cosmetically. Hopefully they have increased the HP by at least 20% & shaved off some weight also.
Well said!
A friend of mine has a '96 he's trying to get rid of. We're in the exploratory haggling stage. I've ridden the thing. Trying to figure out what its potential is for better mpg's through use of a metering rod carb, but so far no one is sharing their numbers.
Go ahead buy a KTM.
Thanks Champ. I’ve owned this bike twice. HONDA has purely made profits from this. If anything drop the price on the XR650L ANNIVERSARY. Or on HONDA start date (ANNIVERSARY). Love the bike but it’s going up in price for NOTHING!!! Honda been making it so long I know that it paid for developments in some of the newer HONDA MOTORCYCLES.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! .Enjoy your ride! 💪🏍
U want the price to go down , come on man.
I wish was water cooled
I don't think Honda understand it's 2023 and not 1923. It looks like a damn retro bike.👎🏿
That’s why we like it!
That’s what makes it great. Don’t like it then buy a klr or drz🤷♂️
Go buy a KTM I DARE U.
