- EPISODE #15 - In this video James Eatock once more looks at the censorship suffered by the Teenaga Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, primarily when broadcast in the UK. Specifically the much-celebrated season three episode "Turtles on Trial" is examined, and the lengthy edits are showcased.

I absolutely loved "Turtles on Trial" from when I recorded the original BBC airing. Watching the uncut version for the first time in 2006 was like a different show and filled in the gaps where the jump cuts were. The animation in this episode was gorgeous!!!
I managed to get my hands on an uncut version of the episode towards the end of the nineties...my mind was blown by how much had been edited out! :)
It was strange that we had the "Hero Turtles" brand instead of "Ninja". Also "Action Force" instead of "GI Joe". Turtles was so big in the early 90s, absolutely massive with us kids and seemed to be everywhere. Odd how some things just take off. The buzz over the movie in the early 90s was huge too.
I remember getting those Tempo VHS tapes with episodes of Action Force on...with those atrocious moments of replacing certain pieces of dialogue! :) - To this day I've never seen the entirety of the G.I. Joe series...I REALLY need to! :)
The Action Force thing dates WAY back to a complicated history Hasbro had with the original G.I. Joe doll released in the 60's, which was renamed to Action Man by British distributor; Palitoy, who wound up creating the first incarnation of Action Force, before Hasbro re-acquired the rights to their property for Europe in the mid 80's.
To say the British censors butchered this episode would be a gross understatement. They straight up massacred it.
As I say, there were more random edits throughout the episode (and the series)...such a shame...:(
I recall one of the older Cereal Geek channels highlight clips from this episode and talked a bit about the censorship, nice to see a more detailed video. This episode does stick in my mind quite well, especially Krang being on the offensive, it was always a big deal when Krang ventured outside the Technodrome in those earlier seasons, he was presented far more as an intimidating high-stakes threat that got rather flanderized in later episodes
Yeah, early Krang really did feel like the warlord of Dimension X...rather than in later seasons where many of the villains were played for laughs...
The screencaps/cels used here look phenomenally high resolution!
Yeah, Dusan upscaled the images for use in the video! :)
Wow! Great video on the edits, man! You should totally do more of them
I probably could make more, as the show was definitely "hurt" by the BBFC over here in the UK...:(
Find the whole censoring of TMNT in the UK mind boggling. Thankfully we didn't get that here in Australia
You lucky buggers! :) - Also, given that you're in Australia you may appreciate this...Home and Away had numerous storylines edited for content over here in the UK - It may be because it was shown at 5.15pm over here...but still...
@cerealgeekTV it's a possibility but still strange. Here in Australia it airs at 7pm
Another great video James I like the hero turtles videos. Until this channel I’ve never heard of the hero turtles. Keep up the good work!
Thank you - I shall keep going! :)
Your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites, James. I appreciate geeking out over my favorite properties while learning things about them. All this info about what you had in the UK is brand new to me. Keep it coming!
THANK YOU for the very kind words - Yeah, slowly but surely, I think this channel is finding its audience! :)
glad I was a kid in America. we didn't have to deal with British censorship.
G.I. Joe (or Action Force as it was called over here) suffered from the same fate...even though the show was never actually broadcast on TV (random episodes were released to VHS)...
Informative and relaxing as usual, James. Your Michaelangelo dub is also on point, lol.
When I did those voices I was kind of hoping that Dusan was going to extract the vocals from the episode...when he didn't I thought to myself, "Well, I guess I'm going with this!" :)
"Bow and arrow"... never heard of a 'crossbow' James 😂
Yeah, the edits were super bad in this show in particular, boggles the mind on how stupid the censorship law was to begin with, and the untold trouble it caused for something so minor!
There's a BBC censor just off-screen holding up a sign telling James not to say ""crossbow''' on pain of having a shuriken thrown at his head.
BUGGER - So, when I edited this video I remember flagging that up as something I had to change (as in record a pick-up line)...and then I TOTALLY forgot to do so - ARGH - "Bow and arrow"...bloody hell! :)
I've been waiting for this, I'd heard British censorship had relabelled the series to Hero, but I wasn't aware they had cut certain episodes to ribbons. Did anyone ever give a reasonable explanation for it, James. Or was that just how censorship was at that time?
Living in the UK, I believe it was just how it was at the time with nunchucks being banned which also affected a Bruce Lee film as well
Yeah, it's just how it was at the time - Be sure to check out a previous episode on this channel that showcases how badly the introduction sequence was butchered...you'll be rather shocked! :)
James Ferman really had it in for nun chucks, didn't he
I never understood the decision...the weapons of the other Turtles were FAR more imitable than nunchucks...:(
@@cerealgeekTV Perhaps because they were easier to get in the UK? My older brother had a pair hidden under his bed
Oh no, it was illegal to own nunchucks in the UK...you could only find them in martial arts stores - My point is that the BBFC deemed nunchucks highly imitable...and yet a sword, a sai, and a bo-staff are FAR easier to imitate...and yet those were never banned! :)
@@cerealgeekTV My Brother had nun chucks, not sure if dad made them or they were bought at karate class. as much as we fought, he practiced with them copying the turtles movie and never struck me. I tried but gave myself some bruises 🤣 Took Australia a while to enforce safety regs, gave the bro some good whacks in the yard when I was Donatello
I wasn't aware there were other episodes done in Japan after the original miniseries! Are there any others besides this one?
Dozens!
Yeah, and the studio that made this episode did some more - They're pretty easy to spot..."The Fifth Turtle" is one, for example! :)
Wow, this episode further proves that the BBFC just sucks! The BBC didn't do too bad of a job showing off how much they suck either, LOL!
The episode itself though to me still looks very much like a Season 1 episode but improved in some areas. The animation really does look amazing here. :)
It's one of the best-looking episodes of the series...because they this gorgeous illustrative style and make magic happen with the level of action and quality of scene direction! :)
@@cerealgeekTV It has going for it for sure. :)
It seems Sky One got a better deal with the edits. 😂 One episode worth covering for censorship is The Mean Machines. That episodes was always butchered for UK airings.
I saw your He-Man interview with Midnight's Edge and wondered is it possible the master reels for shows like TMNT and The Real Ghostbusters still exist? Would there be a way to find out?
It's possible that master reels exist for those shows you mentioned - However, when we produced the Time-Life boxset back in 2008 Andy Mangels and I were literally going around a variety of warehouses in Los Angeles that carried the episode broadcast masters (nothing was in one single place)...I'm not sure that the option of pursuing the master reels was at all possible...:(
@@cerealgeekTV Have you ever reached out to Fred Wolf to ask if he knows where TMNT might be?
These edits are absurd!
Even as a kid I knew something wasn't right with these scenes - The edits would screw up in the timing of the music...so it was NEVER subtle! :(
no nun chucks???? holy guacamole!
Yeah, it was bloody weird...even more so when you consider that the Hero Turtles action figure came with nunchucks! :)
And with these edits just how long was the episode?
Well, the original episode runs at 22 minutes and 18 seconds...the UK trimmed 54 seconds from that...so...21 minutes and 24 seconds...:)
Yeah Hero turtles in the UK, other thing I find odd is in boy cartoons the heroes had to restrain themselves from killing the bad guys, like when He-man tossing villains in hay, but jump over to My Little Pony, and Megan and the rainbow of light hands out justice swifty zapping villains into ash.
I still think the cartoon Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds has one of the most violent scenes ever, when we see women and children killed, in the recreation/retelling of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre! :(
