Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (SNES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Konami's 1992 license-based beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time.
Played as Leonardo on the hard difficulty setting.
Turtles in Time was a huge hit when it first appeared in arcades in the spring of 1991 ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ), and it made no less a splash when it showed up on the Super Nintendo in the summer of the following year. The SNES version was met with universal praise by critics and fans alike, and despite having released just a few months behind juggernauts like Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, it quickly rose to the top of the sales charts.
Though the move to the SNES brought with it some changes, the game was impressively faithful to the arcade version. The bombastic, cartoon-like presentation made the transition intact, as did all of the stages and the main gameplay elements.
There were a few cuts made to make it fit on a cramped SNES cartridge - the intro was changed, the bosses' intro quotes are no longer spoken, and some frames of animation have been cut - but these changes had little impact on the game's playability, and they were subtle enough that many people never even picked up on them at the time.
There were other changes, but they weren't concessions made for the sake of running on weaker hardware - they were improvements on the original game. The Technodrome stage was extended and capped off with a new Shredder battle, Neon Night Riders became an exciting showpiece for the SNES's Mode 7 scaling capabilities, and there were a ton of new bosses. Sewer Surfin' now ends with a fight against the Rat King, Prehistoric Turtlesaurus's Cement Man has been swapped out for Slash, Bebop and Rocksteady now wait (in pirate costumes!) at the end of Skull and Crossbones, and this time, the final battle is with Super Shredder, fresh off of his introduction in the second TMNT movie.
The controls have been improved and expanded on, too. You now have direct control over throws and the dash maneuver, and you can assign your special move to a different button to avoid accidentally triggering it at an inopportune time. These changes do make the game substantially easier than the arcade version, but the improved responsiveness makes it feel quite a bit better to play.
And finally, 2P versus-fighting and time attack modes were tossed in to round out the package.
What makes the game all the more amazing is that Turtles in Time came out just weeks before the Super Nintendo's first birthday in North America. It's a phenomenal piece of work that deserves every bit of praise that was heaped on it, it was one of the best games released on the SNES, and it's arguably the best game to ever bear the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license.
In fact, I'd go so far as to argue that the inclusion of this game alone justifies the cowabunga in the upcoming Cowabunga Collection.
LET'S KICK SHELL!
I also played the Japanese version of the game and translated all of its text. If you'd like to check that out to see how it differs from the North American release: • Teenage Mutant Ninja T...

Almost 30 years later and this soundtrack is still absolutely GOD TIER
KONAMI AT THEIR PEAK 👌
=)
lol
This game was sick
30 years later, and this is still an excellent game based on the TMNT franchise.
We are all marching towards our death 🥶
Literally brings a tear to my eye. This was my childhood.
I had neighborhood friend that own this game I always enjoy playing with him but then shortly he move to another area
Same bro
My childhood was TMNT on NES, and watching videos of it now also brings tears to my eyes, but for a different reason.
This was the first game I put more than a hundred hours into I think. I beat it so many times
More than any other game, I'd say that this is the one that puts the "cowabunga" in the Cowabunga Collection. What a fantastic SNES game.
Over 30 years later, and this game is still fun
@matt You should. It's a fantastic game.
HELL YEAH
I got more mileage from SNES' Tournament Fighters, but I never tossed aside 2P Co-Op with the best belt-feed brawler on the system.
@@Dorian_Scott I agree
Let's be honest, this is the Turtles play through we were all waiting for. Throwing your enemies at/through the screen is one of the most satisfying features of any video game ever.
Yeah, this is the one everyone was asking about. The run isn't quite finished yet, though. I still have SNES Tournament Fighters to post, and I've got one of the later Turtles games to put up as well.
@NintendoComplete Personally, I've enjoyed every single Turtles play through you've done. This is the "Crown Jewel" of Turtles games for most people, but I've really enjoyed watching your videos of the more obscure games (i.e. Radical Rescue). As I've said in the past, TMNT II on NES means more to me because it came out at the height of Turtles fandom for me. Keep the videos coming! I figure we're around or exactly the same age, so I'll say that the 1990/91 grade two/three version of me salutes you and says "Turtle Power".
Multi-slam is where it's at. Slamming Foot mooks like you're Jax Briggs never gets old.
@@NintendoComplete the first Shredder fight was even kind of referenced in Shredder's Revenge when fighting Chrome Dome
It's a dangerous thing to implement. If you don't time the disappearing sprite just right, the Foot Soldier flies out of the game and injures the player.
It was the 90s when I first saw this game at a video store.
It was one Friday night and wanted to rent a good SNES game so bought candy, chips, and two 2-liters of A&W at the supermarket.
So I went to the video store and there it was the empty box TMNT: Turtles in Time on a rack and had to rent the game.
I ran back home very happy, put the cartridge in my SNES, and played until about 5 am.
Great times in my childhood!
😊😊😊
I used to play this with my brother as a very young kid and I had NO idea it was the Turtles in Time that everybody talked about... you unlocked some memories...
Same here man
One of my favorite Super Nintendo games... TMNT IV: Turtles in Time!
agree
This is one of the three games that my older brother and I would stay up past our bedtime as kids on the weekend to play endlessly. Watching this video makes me think about my older brother, who sadly, isn't with us anymore.
Love you, bro. And thanks Mr. NC for a great video as always.
Thanks for sharing your gaming story/memory of your brother. Games really connected people back then and serve as fond memories now of loved ones who are no longer with us.
Yes me too! Me and my older brother loved this game! Played it all the time. We got really good at it.
Same here, 90s was a great decade to grow up
Sorry for your loss.
I also played this with my older brother. Had no clue it was the famous Turtles in Time that's often mentioned... I just knew it was a TMNT game.
I'm sure you had lots of fun playing this with your brother... may he rest in peace. Never forget your memories with him! 🙏
@proxydoesitwrong I have the memories of my brother Michael we use to play this super double dragon I know the pain you feel every day the same pain of loss that I feel 💔
In 2020 A.D., the skyboard indeed existed and still exists in 2023. It's legit prediction of 2020.
The best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game you can’t change my mind
I agree with you
A game that definitely deserves for all Turtle fans
I was born in 85 and played this as a kid. My friends and I never made it past the pirate ship level. All this time I had no idea what was past that. Thanks for this.
MY little Brother and I owned it during Early 1993. We BEAT it Three times.
Everyone’s favorite TMNT game.
@matt I see…
@matt oh Matt, you’ve got us again
😂😂
I prefer Shredder's Revenge but BOTH Snes AND arcade versions of this game are great! I've played them both on Cowabunga collection and they're my top picks.
@@Sk4tman91 Okay.
I got this game in '92 for Christmas and I would play it hours on end. I even got so good I could defeat every foot soldier with the 3D throw
The GOAT of belt scroller beat em ups, the game I never get tired of, the the legendary Turtles in Time SNES!
"Let’s Kick Shell!"
This game was loads of fun to play on the SNES!
This one Brings some childhood vibes
11:58 *WHOA!* 😲
I never knew they both had a TEAM ATTACK! I always killed them off too fast to see it.
And that's how Mario learned to ride on Koopa Shells to shred those enemies!
Haha yeah, I was trying to drag that fight out to show that move.
I still love TMMT IV : Turtles In Time , I had this awesome game waay back in 1992 , I was 7 years old
Always made more sense for them to be sent in time from the Technodrome than from the sewers. The SNES version just seems to flow better even though it doesn’t have the arcade hardware.
Exactly! How does Shredder even get a that hologram in the sewer anyway?
And I love the additions of new stuff like the boss fight with Tokka and Rahzar in the Technodrome as well as the one with Shredder, having Slash in place of Cement Man in Prehistoric Turtle-saurus and such.
That new turtles game couldn't capture the satisfaction of hitting/swinging/throwing enemies like this one.
Great memories from when I was a kid.
If only this version of Turtles in Time was on the arcade, it'd be perfect with 4 players.
Super Nintendo and Mode 7 graphics… you had to be there to understand… this was an awesome sight to see the jump from NES to SNES
this game is awesome! the music, the graphics, the lenght, everything is just perfect. Most beat'em ups should learn from this game. You don't need to spend 1 hour beating a level and enemies who can stand 100 kicks in order to make a game "fun", just a fast paced game with dozens of well animated enemies, and rockin' music.
*length*
I agree
I got it for my birthday in 93 and my sister and I played the shit out of it. A lot of times we'd get to the end, hit reset, and do it again.
@@jayskicksnfits9372 thanks! I don't speak english, my native language is spanish, so it's good to be corrected in order to be proficient in a new language :)
@@NintendoComplete I did the same, beating the game each time with a differente turtle. Even when my favorite turtle was Mike, I had fun in every playthrough.
Best turtle game ever.😁 I remember when this came out I asked my folks to buy it for me immediately and got it. I remember the days of blockbuster video seeing TMNT Turtles In Time, MK2 and DKC *always rented out* 😳😲 Ahh good times growing up in the 80s and 90s.
I always loved that aspect of the gameplay where you can throw your enemies out of the screen. Its just so epic how they go flying. That rocks so much.
SNES Classic…got turtles in time along with some other snes games and Super Nintendo as a birthday gift in February 1993…Konami had some classics in the 80s and 90s…TMNT And SNES Forever…
Me and my friend used to play this all the time as kids. Then he gave me the cartridge and I ended up giving it to my other friend years later since he had an SNES (I never owned a snes of my own)
Core memory, This game had everything. I still remember how stunned i was at the fact you could THROW ENEMIES AT THE SCREEN. I recently did a deep dive on all the games i played between 91 and 94. And this one is still so well made for what they had available back then. One of the best 2 player games i played back then.
This game has so many great features that make it even better than the arcade original. It would be perfect if it only had the smooth animations and clearer voice samples of the arcade game . But I love all the other stuff. The soundtrack is pumped through punchier instruments, the bosses are better and more diverse, and then there is the future stage with its mode 7 - even with a fake paralax-layer below, which makes the steets really look as if they hover far above the ground. Something that not even F-Zero got right. I love this game.
I still have this game on my Super Nintendo and I always play it in hard mode for a good ending
Yep, Hard mode is the way to go for this game.
You said it
Still holds up today.
yes it is
Ah yes, the "Magnum Opus" of TMNT Konami games. Maybe even TMNT games as a whole. Still a fun game. Especially since the soundtrack is MUCH better.
Me and my brother really love is game best all good old day childhood memories. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Man childhood memories are the best these kids will never know❤
maybe the best snes game ever made.
Never had it myself, but my friend did and we would always play. Me as donny, he as mikey. Fun times.
This is pretty much the best TMNT game out there and that's saying something because the arcade version of this may have the console port edged out in terms of fluidity of animation and extra animations (such as when obtaining pizza), but this version of _Turtles in Time_ is the most memorable. And I'm saying that as a Sega girl. The fact we're getting all three versions of this game (if you want to loosely include the Genesis version in) of this incredible game in one collection is definitely worth the price tag right there.
Not any more though, Shredder's Revenge is pretty awesome.
@@sir_john_hammond Turtles in Time is so awesome that Shredder's Revenge references it and other older games, a fantastic homage to classic great games! It's nice to be able to play a more modern take on a tried-and-true formula, isn't it?
@@LPetal86 Yes! Exactly! Shredders revenge is great. Definitely takes a lot of inspiration from Turtles in Time.
@@LPetal86 TMNT 1 Arcade is WAY better and more faithful to the original cartoon compared to TMNT 2 Arcade/TMNT 4 game🤓💯
@@sir_john_hammond Shredder's Revenge is horrible and boring👎💯
this game is also a landmark because it did what arcade didn't plus it added so much more and one of my favorite Turtle games about time and way better than that horrible remake
good memories as a kid playing this game with my mom
Couldn't get enough of playing this classic! Graphics and gameplay was top notch!
One of the best games I've played on SNES.
I hope when Cowabunga Collection comes out, the SNES Nintendo Switch controller will work on this game.
Same thing with the NES NSO controller for the TMNT NES games.
Turtles in Time is the main reason I'm getting the Cowabunga Collection for the Switch. I cannot wait to play it again. I already pre-ordered my copy of TMNT: Cowabunga Collection. That and TMNT: Arcade game (1989) and Tournament Fighters.
Still the best ninja turtles video game.
My first moments of consciousness in life is waking up and seeing my brothers play this game.
I can remember the first time I played this as a kid. Got scared shitless when Krang popped up in the background of the first level.
Now, this is the best version, despite the soundtrack and graphics not being as good as the Arcade original. TCRF says that audio files for Slash were in the Arcade game. I thought I remember reading somewhere that Bebop and Rocksteady were also featured in the game as unused audio, too.
I wholly agree.
My all-time favorite video game from my childhood. I played this a lot.
Neon Night-Riders was just that level in terms of music but for that special bonus level incorporation into bad guys and most of all Krang. They did an excellent job with this game for that era and time. ‼️‼️
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time is a port of the arcade game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time in order to continue the numbering from the first three Turtles games on the NES. Nice graphics, appropriate music, and a nice arcade feel make the game of the better side-scrolling beat-'em-ups available. Beside all this, it is a great challenge. TMNT IV: Turtles in Time is a lot like TMNT II: The Arcade Game for the NES. It's a side scrolling fighting game where you have to get rid of tons of the Foot Klan, and at the end of each level there is a boss such as Bebop & Rocksteady, an alligator, robotic turtles, Krang, and more. Also like TMNT II for the NES, you can either play a game by yourself or play a two player game which is the same as playing Co-op because you and your friend will be able to go through the levels and fight at the same time, just like working as a team. Instead of the levels mainly being in sewers and on the streets like they were before, you will go to dinosaur levels, a train, of course the Technodrome, and others. In other words, you will be fighting through history, hence the title, Turtles in Time. The graphics of the game aren't bad at all, for a Super Nintendo/Arcade game. The front of the box is described as "Board Shredder's terror four through time, direct from the arcade hit, non-stop to your house, no tokens required. It's Konami's hottest Turtle game of all-time!"
I honestly prefer this version over the arcade version. mostly due to getting rid of cement man as a boss and moving tohka and rahzar to the technodrome and replacing them with bebop and rocksteady in the pirate stage with pirate outfits.
for me, this is top 3 of best tmnt games of all time, along side the original arcade game and the Manhattan project.
Snes version hás better gameplay.
What about tmnt: the arcade game?
Turtles In Time Arcade is WAY better than the SNES. It makes more sense because it's a SEQUEL and you don't want a lot of the same chacracters over again. Bebop and Rockstedy had their time in the first arcade game. Time for new sub enemies for a change🤓
@@troyandrew6154 TMNT 1 arcade is WAY better and more faithful to the original cartoon the TMNT 2 arcade/TMNT 4 game.
Like how krang flexed before taking
The statue of Liberty 😂
Showing lady liberty who's the man.
Ah the classic.
En 1996 yo jugaba este juego con amigo que ya no está en este mundo, que grandes recuerdos de la infancia! ❤
Turtles In Time is one of those games that unites everyone born from that generation as it seems everyone played it. What makes this version superior is those hit confirms. When you land a hit on a enemy or boss, it feels satisfying. Its one of the 90’s most beloved games.
What makes it superior are the new things they added along with lots of changes and better balance.
TMNT 1 Arcade is superior to Turles In Time and WAY more faithful to the original cartoon show💯
Here it is, Shell-heads, the one we've all been waiting for! The crown jewel of the Konami TMNT game crown. It's considered just as good as, if not even better than the original arcade Turtles in Time. Both versions have their pros and cons. Perhaps the biggest one in the arcade version's favor is the four-player action where all four Turtles battle alongside each other onscreen simultaneously whereas on SNES you're limited to two Turtles in action at once due to the limitations of the console. However, in addition to the extra Scenes and bosses and extended end credits sequence helping to provide an arguably more complete, more polished experience, the soundtrack. Is. *Legendary.* Plus there's the sound design; the sound of a boss taking damage is godly. That alone automatically makes this the superior version.
I will confess, although I really like these games, I'm _terrible_ at beat-em-ups in general, and TiT is no exception. I never was able to beat this game as a kid and I don't play many other sidescrolling brawlers except Batman Returns (which I also loved as a tyke). Nothing against the genre, I just suck at them. So it's swell to hear that both games are still considered some of the greatest.
For a game about time travel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, ironically, is timeless. *_COWABUNGA!_*
Phenomenal music? The original arcade has the better music. Other than that, yes this SNES port is worth its weight in gold!
TMNT 1 arcade is better and WAY more faithful to the 87 cartoon. In T.I.T Baxter, Slash, Leatherhead, and Shredder look different. Plus it has 3 movie chacracters (Tokka, Razar, and Super Shredder) in this game. While the first two showed up in the cartoon 2 YEARS LATER, Super Shredder was never in the cartoon. He wouldn't even look like this if he did go Super Shredder in the show🤓
@@great159 foda-se 😃
My favorite turtles game!
Loved to play this, double dragon, final fight, battle toads was my childhood!
My all time fave snes game besides Super Mario World. My toes my toes!!!! Lol. Classic.
They had dinosaurs, a pirate ship and a train and they should have also had Ancient Greece and the Middle Ages!
This brings back sooo many childhood memories bring this back ASAP 🐢🐢🐢🐢
This was the 1st fighting game I was allowed to play as a child (my mom was "against violence" which I understand now as an adult 🙄😅🤷🏿♂️💙) & I used to stay up late during the summer trying to get to Shredder without my older brother's help. Farthest I could get at 9 years old without cheats is Neon Night Riders but I was/am Donatello & my brother was/is Raphael.
LOL! The "Neon Night Riders" level takes place in 2020! But the real 2020 was nothing like this!
This is the best one to get of this era the snes version
I have never had an SNES. I played this game over an emulator at the end of the '90s. Terrific 😊😊
This is one of those games that prove SNES was a winner in the console wars. Better presentation, music and proper gameplay pacing. Not to mention it had the advantage of being the newer console of the 2
I still say Sega gave a good run for their money in a lot of departments. It just had certain things that the SNES didn't and visa versa. The console wars were a close race like WWF Raw vs WCW Nitro. Don't count out either system or game library. One of the best video game eras in my opinion
No.
Once again about this game, there is no need to say what has been said about it like a million times already. One of the best SNES games ever, greatest cartoon based game ever made, and one of all time classics ever created. This SNES adaptation proved to be even more popular than its arcade counterpart, surpassing it in many areas. Better control of the throw moves, button configurations, the option to set your dash auto or manual, and turning off the back attack. The game also expanded boss roster with the inclusion of more fan favorite turtles villains: the Rat King, Slash (replacing the one-off Cement Man in the fifth stage), and the return of Bebop & Rocksteady, having to move over Tokka & Rahzar as mid-bosses in the exclusive Technodrome stage (which culminates with an also exclusive memorable boss fight with Shredder piloting a battle mech where you throw him an endless wave of Foot Soldiers at his face).
This game alone can be to some people the main reason that warrants the big excitement for the Cowabunga Collection. You'll see some comments like that in different forums.
The undisputed very best TMNT game ever created.
It's NOWHERE near cartoon accurate and TMNT 1 Arcade is THE BEST TMNT GAME IN HISTORY (facts look it up🤓💯)
So many Arcade Games got an nice Port to the Snes... Love this Version a little bit more than the original Arcade Version... Street Fighter 2 also... Lets Kick Shell!!! Played as a Kid till i was completely Sweat!!!!
I had a genesis growing up so Hyperstone Heist is one of my favorite games ever made. I always heard this one was a masterpiece though.
Yes, it's really good. I own the cartridges of this and Hyperstone Heist as well.
Man they NAILED it with the music in this game!
Let's kick shell!
I like this videogame, greetings from Guaranda, Ecuador.
😍😍😍😍😍😍🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨
Man year 2020 wasn’t so futuristic after all
Yes but the city looks pretty fine.. however im still waiting the flying skateboard xD
The only problem i had was doing that throw them into the screen thing. I never could do it
COWABUNGA!
When properly porting a game, this is the gold standard. My toe, my toe 😆👍
You play very good.
Thanks!
I got two authentic carts of this game. Very happy I bought doubles of most of my favourite snes games. These games aren’t getting cheaper.
El mejor juego de mis héroes come pizza para consola SNES, el unico defecto es que es muy corto en niveles, un par de niveles extra hubiera sido sublime.
Wait..how did Krang become tenth the size of the Statue of Liberty?
By the Gods... I'd forgotten how epilepsy inducing 90s games can be 😅
This game is more complete than the arcade version.
It's one of the few cases where a port is superior to original game despite it was made in a hardware less powerful.
God I miss the 90s.
Playing hard mode was worth getting this ending
I only had the chance to play it when we were vvisiting my cousin. That made it even more special.
Played this as a kid I think at an arcade. Never beat it, but idc it was still fun. I always enjoyed hitting the fire hydrants and knocking out the foot soldiers with it lol.
Christmas of 1991 I was so happy I played them shit out of this game that day
How many afternoons playing this with my cousins. Also, for several years I didn't even known the original arcade game existed, contrarily to the 1989 original I never saw a cabinet of it in my area, and so I was convinced it was made just for the SNES. Either way it doesn't make it less impressive.
Long time since I last checked here! In fact, I didn't even know about the announcement of that collection. Between that and the DotEmu game there's going to be a lot.
Loved this version of TMNT for SNES. I actually liked it a little better than the first arcade game. Pizza time!
Fzero stage is so nostalgic
This probably the best game ever made
I think I only saw this game in arcades
31:10 If you play Capcom Beat'em ups, you may had the impression that the SNES CPU is really slow, only 3 enemies on the screen at the same time. Here Konami puts 4, and sometimes even 8 of them. And to add salt to the injury, the gameplay is faster than Capcom games.
You actually read my mind from a thought I had sometime ago. I wonder how X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse would've turned out if Konami was in charge instead of Capcom.
One of my fav games growing up but the flashing lights lowkey give me seizures now in my mid 30s 👴
same here, my problem is the intro! I can't watch the screen with those purple flashes! I get immediately eyesore
Is it weird that Neon Night Rider takes place in 2020?
This was MY ISH!!!!!👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿 My friends and I, Yeah… all day son.
27:23
that is NOT what 2020 looked like.
