I love Vostoks. But not this one. I just think there is very little pay off for the oddness. If you are into vintage military or something, or you just want a cheap oddity, then OK. But there are much better (almost identical) Vostoks out there for the same money. Cheers, Jody
As a retired Navy sailor, that watch makes perfect sense! Navy ships don't have windows like a cruise liner and operates 24 hrs a day. It's like being in a cave; hard to tell day from night.

Exactly that and the fact Vostok designed them as expedition watches which Jody could have found out of he had done his research! In fact these 24hr watches are for expeditions to north or south pole because either area has long periods where it either never gets dark or never gets light. With these 24 watches you will always know when you wake up if it's morning or afternoon or evening. Also: if you can read a digital watch that's set to 24hrs this is just as easy! I do not understand how he can even call this complicated? Hour hand at 18 and minute at 12 is exactly the same as a digital watch that says 18:12 ??

well atleast in the darker hours you need good lume
or lighting since the numbers or markers are 50% closer together,
it is a bit tricky to see the difference between for example 22.00hrs
and 23.00hrs.

Actually, in Russia such watches were originally designed for Arctic expeditions. Also, it's pretty useful for people, who live in cities located behind North Polar Circle.

There are 24 hours in a day so a 24 hour watch makes perfect sense to me. I've lost count of the times I've fallen asleep and woke not knowing if it's 7am or pm.

@@alexkwan3 Digital watches confuse me in military time. But bizarrely, a 24 hour analog is easier to understand for me. Probably because I have the opposite marker past 12 to orient me to PM time.

Many countries are used to the 24h time format, so this is actually more useful a 12h watch for . Over here we can actually say 20:40 instead of 8:30 PM and no one is confused. It's also more logical to have a watch with a dial that rotates once a day just like the sun.
As an ex military man who still works in 24 hour time this watch makes perfect sense which is why I have one, mine is the blue version though. I would class these as a tool watch designed for a specific role or reason as opposed to a standard watch. They're easy enough to get your head around but it's beneficial if you already know 24 hour clock time which isn't hard to learn. After all there are 24hrs in a day and there are many aspects of daily and or work life that use or you would need 24hr clock time. I find it funny watching people trying to work out what 18.30, for example, is at a bus, train or flight time table. You see them counting the hours on their fingers then get frustrated converting to their 12 hour brains. Everyone should be taught 24 hour clock time. I was taught it at primary school.
24 hour time is pretty standard in Europe, although can't speak for every country.

I've been wanting to get one for a while. We use 24hr clocks at work because our records are kept with 24 hour times instead of am and pm. They're pretty easy to read once you're used to it.

I am in a situation that is similar. Glycine Airman purist or whatever is a great slightly higher budget option.
How do you set it
@@oscarosullivan4513 you set it to the time. Midnight is at the very top. Noon is at the very bottom. While the second and minute hand move at regular speed the hour hand moves at half speed. 1:00 pm is 1300 so the short fat hand points to 13 while the long skinny one points straight up like normal.
Maybe somebody already mentioned this, but I think that 24h watch was produced for submarine crews (and maybe some other people who work inside something for extendef periods of time.) It just seems right, when you have no ability to observe whether it is a day or a night, 24h might be more convenient

Considering the other K65 Vostoks are pilot style that may also be the defining difference between Kommandirskie and Amphibia - everything that's NOT for (combat) divers but needs good WR (submarines, battleships, pilots) is a Kommandirskie. The Kommandirskie Classic are just the Infantry line.

If I recall correctly, the soviet used this 24hrs watches for space missione and originally they were used in submarines so the crew could always know what time it was despite the lack of sun and shifts.

I got a vintage glycine airman also a 24 hours dial... I think it is especially useful when you are too pissed drunk to figure out the time.

This watch would have been handy for my friend who drank ”a few” beers in the afternoon and went sleeping. He woke up from the nap, looked at the time ”oh, it’s 7.30” and went outside, where he met his neighbor. The neighbor was getting into his car and asked my friend, what he is going to do next, and my friend replied that he was thinking of going to a bar to get a couple of drinks. Well, as you may have guessed, it was 7.30 am not pm like my friend thought and the neighbor was quite appalled. Don’t drink and nap! 🤣

24hr dials are an acquired taste, in that they do take practice to get use to them. But that is part of the hobby. These dials provide an interesting shift in time telling. They position you in the entirety of the day, which is an interesting perspective. Great for submariners and those working above the arctic circle.

This is my third most worn watch (Tough Solar classic g-shock and my omega seamaster two I wear more). I flipped out the diving bezel for a 24 hour bezel though giving me DUAL TIME CAPABILTIES!

Ive got the white one, I can think on 24 hr, its just a gmt after all. My biggest issues are a) the big indices are 2.1/2 minuite markers, which is irritating and the lug holes are miles away from the case leaving a huge gap between spring bars and case necessitating a nato, yr fave strap!
I bought a Boctok mesh with mine. Really well made compared to the shite one that comes as standard. All for princely sum of AU$7 extra.
Mine came from Meranom with an orange rubber strap and it really needs the gap!
I work in hospital we use 24 hour clock so this would be great for me.
This is actually a great watch. I wear mine more than any other watch I own. It keeps great time, if it hacked it would be perfect. I have refinished the case, replaces the bezel with a nice coin edge dive style and added a Horween leather strap. What's not to like: 24 hour movement, bidirectional bezel and great time keeping. The best everyday watch I own. If I want to show off I'll wear my Navitimer, otherwise I'll wear the Vostok.
Hmm I quite like it. Quirky enough to be cool. Plus the added advantage of being late to meetings and blaming your watch for being too hard to read at a glance.
Thanks for the review! When 24-hour mechanisms appeared, they were never intended for "ordinary" civilian use. They are intended to use in places where You can't tell the night from day - places, close to Earth's poles, where there's either polar night or day and You can't tell if it's day or night - the sun is always "on" or "off" throughout the day; nuclear submarines with great autonomy, not needing to resurface often; other facilities with no access to daylight (mines, command bunkers, casinos? :))) ). I believe, that after several days in such conditions Your biological clock might fail in determining whether it's a day or night, so watches like this come in handy. Breitling had a "Cosmonaut" watch with 24h dial just because of the same "hard to tell if it's day or night" reason.
I've got this and find it easy to read. Most of the time you already know which hour it is, so you're really just reading the minute hand to tell the time. Plus after a while you get used to the first half of the dial being AM, and the second half being PM.
I have used a 24h dial Raketa as a daily for almost 10 years. Being used to 24h "military" time, reading the time on it came more natural than on a regular 12h dial (I have my digital watches, PC and phone apps &c. all set on 24h time). The problem with Vostoks is that they have a quite small dial, which is very cluttered too, so reading the time on a 24h Vostok dial is very difficult. Indeed, not the best 24h dial watch out there. Keeping with Vostok, I prefer those ones with a regular 12h dial, but with a "digital" indicator (wheel) for the 24 hours.
It is only hard to read if you don’t understand the 24 hour Clock.

Got up this morning and put on my 24hr Volstok. Daily routine is sit down with morning coffee and watch "Just One More Watch". Low and behold it's a review of the same watch I'm wearing!! I agree that this watch is best as a novelty and not much more. I like to wear it as it is definitely a conversation starter. I also wear it when I ride my RUSSIAN Ural side car motorcycle!
Military man here who uses only military time in my day to day. I love this, and actually feel relief when I see the time there on my wrist the way I want to say it.
A 24 hour dial comes in real handy when you're up in northern Alaska on cut off from the photo cycle.

Have this, in blue. First Vostok, but not my last for sure. I use 24 hr. time at work and it’s so handy. It looks great, the band it came with is comfy and it’s pretty accurate, well within a minute per day, probably way less.
In medicine, we use 24-hour or military time so this watch is very useful.
Ironically a white version of this just arrived for me today, I agree with your review, a strange one but I like it! I've already changed the strap, and swapped in a pepsi 24 hour bezel which makes it a bit more practical for keeping track of two timezones easily. Great review as always!

If you are part of a speleological research mission that will spend months underground or if you decide to spend your summer or winter holidays in Finland this watch will be indispensable, I do not see how we could do without it. Also in case of atomic war, if you are lucky enough to be able to shelter in a bunker, you will be happy to have bought this model. As we see this watch is totally adapted to all exceptional situations which makes everyday life exciting knowing what could happen to us ...
As retired Air Force, I would easily tell the time at a glance and be able to tell if it is AM or PM at the same glance. I haven't quit figured out why a watch/clock face has 12 hours when a day is 24 hours long!

Maybe not so fashionable, but I’ve got two watches. This watch on my left and an Apple Watch on my right. I particularly appreciate this watch for when I’m flying, I’ve set it to Zulu time and that’s what we use in aviation. Would recommend if you’re a frequent flyer or even a sailor!
As you know that watch is a specific tool watch for those who require 24 hour timekeeping. Many like me ex military have no problem figuring out time with one. I think its a great looking fun watch.
I've read having our new Bostok's cleaned and regulated goes a long way to accurate timekeeping. I have a vintage diver recently cleaned and regulated that keeps +5 seconds a day!
One of these was my first Vostok, I now have four!
For most of my adult life I worked for FedEx Express and EMS. I used the 24 hour format in both those occupations. I love the watch. I also love Dr. Jody's watch channel!
This Vostok operates just like the Glycine Airman Purist. Perfect for long haul pilots, submariners, and other sailors. I was on HMS Bulwark, an aircraft carrier, as a Midshipman it took a week for me to find my way onto the flight deck and daylight.

Call me a contrarian but I genuinely find this easier to read than a 12 hr. dial. About 23 years ago, I accidentally got my Timex IronMan stuck in 24hr (I was 4 or 5 years old) so I just got used to reading in 24hr. as a kid. 24hr. has always made more sense to me.
The 24 hour time system is better and is why the US military and most armed forces use it. The only confusing part I think is that “12AM” is 0:00 hours (24 on this watch dial).
I had to use 24 hour time in the military and never stopped after I left the military. It just makes more sense in my mind.
I had a sovjet submarine 24 dial watch around 86 and I was out partying a lot in those days (student) so it made perfect sense to be able to tell if it was 3 a clock in the morning or the night during winter or summer in Sweden. Great conversation piece, I was the only one having one so that was also cool. And I worked extra weekends at the hospital with nights and 12 hour shifts so it fitted well there too.
I own one. I am wearing it now. All of my digital clocks are set to 24 hour time. It makes it easier for me to keep morning and afternoon hours straignt.
I have one and love it. Keeps great time, waterproof and a great conversation starter.
I want to have a Vostok, and having spent 28 years in the US Navy, I'm accustomed to reading a 24-hr dial. I've even been shopping for a 24-hr 8-day ship's bell Bakelite wall clock for my smoking room. This watch ticks many boxes: 24-hr dial, Amphibia case, Komandirskie branding. Just can't say no.
The 24-hour display of digital watches is just as strange, but most people outside the Anglo world use it.
I'm in law enforcement and we tell time using military 24 hr time so I appreciate this one.
Usage on submarines is probably the best explanation.
However, i would like to see an upside down dial with 12h on top and 24h on bottom. Point hour hand to sun, 12h mark is south (works with this version here too, but you have the sun in your back during daytime).
Obviously, you can do that with a regular watch, too, and south will be halfway between hour hand an 12h mark... But having the hour hand move at the same angular speed as the sun's is just way cooler!
As someone who uses the 24-hour format on all of my devices because it just makes more sense, this is a really tempting pickup.

I bought it so after I got my Part 107 Drone Pilots Certificate, in order to keep track of UTC (Zulu time) which uses 24 hours time. METAR and TAF reports are in 24 hr UTC.
I didn't know what quality is was getting when I ordered it. Its good to see that Vostok has a generally good reputation on UA-cam.
With a moded 24h bezel it's a perfect pseudo gmt alternative to those pricey glycine airman double 24!
Oi careful. I have the Glycine Airman Purist 46 as well as this piece. 😂 Much better built than the Boctok, but then the price is dearer too.

It would be good for someone who needs to use military time at their job.
I kind of get that, but any digital, set to 24 hour time mode would be much easier. I just think there are much better, very similar, Vostoks out there.

I am a US Air Force veteran and have this watch. I really like it but I already think in 24 hour(aka “military time” in the US). It’s definitely a watch were you have to appreciate the 24 dial.
I think they come from other Soviet era 24 hour dial watches made for people in extreme Northern Russia who needed the 24 hour time format.
I'm the same, well 11B in Army, but I can't get used to 12 hour am/pm again, and having a nice looking analog watch in 24 hour time is just amazing to me.
Military time is super useful. Lots of military and veteran would love this watch. Military time also help indicate am/pm too.
I have a Vostok 24 hour Komandirskie but its the 350607 and I really enjoy it. I like that I can look at it and see exactly how much of the day has passed which I never really think of with a 12 hour dial, when the hour hand is halfway around half of the day is passed and the same with 3/4 or any other fraction. It didn't take me more than a couple of weeks to get used to telling the time. I did find these dials a bit plain though which is why I went with the 350607.

I've been getting used to the 24 hour format on my Smart watch, it was a bit panicky when I checked the time in the middle of the night. But for us older people it's a great way to train our brain with watches.
Seems pretti straight forward to read the time… yes it’s different, but i’ve grown up saying it’s 16 o’clock (in italian though) and i don’t think it’s too weird.
I really like the Glycine Airman with the 24hr purist dial.
I don't think they are really useless, its just a different way to tell the time.
Would of been a home run if it had a GMT bezel and a GMT movement with the 4th hand added
Fun thin is the Vostok K-35 24 hour dial was my first Vostok and it's the one I have come to love the most. Even spent time and money modding it.
I have this exact model and just love it. Use it more than my Tissot.
Just got mine without date and a NATO and I love it.
Nothing says super symmetry and efficiency like one sweep per dial per day.

I've had this in a white dial I got from Meramon. I love it. I have no problem figuring out time. In my zone, Which is Eastern or NYC time, I minus 2 hours. I have 6 Vostok, which 2 are 390781, 170863 version. 2 base Komandirski, a gold tank and a blue submarine dial, and 2 GMT. all of them are different. One GMT is a Amphibia batman style which I have heard are hard to get. I love all 6 of mine and often wear my 24 hour, just for conversation starters. People are always Looking at it and asking about it
Actually am on the market for a 24 hour dial because I work 12 hour shifts. Not that Vostok thought, the only other companies I know that do them are Glycine (I’m put off buy Invicta ownership) and Breitling (deleted Navitimer)
But that's like refusing to buy a Credor because it's owned by Seiko.
Glycine are their own beast. Company ownership doesn't make them any less of a brand.
Definitely don’t be put off Glycine because of Invicta...their watches are phenomenal, especially for the money. I have two- a Combat Sub (GL0076) and an Airman DC-4 (GL0217). To be fair, I did get the GMT version of the Airman, because I didn't want to be confused when reading the time at a glance. When Invicta bought out Glycine, they promised not to mess with the brand. For the most part, they have kept that promise.
The Equa by Alexander Shorokhoff is beautiful but drives me crazy when it comes to tell time.
I was born and raised in Oregon, surprised to see an Aussie wearing an Oregon shirt, lol.

I got one of these a couple of weeks ago being my first Vostok and I love it. It’s different.
I put a world timer bezel on my 24h Komandirskie (model 350.617) and I can now easily tell the time in any time zone by aligning my time zone with its hour hand position. That is an extremely useful function which a GMT watch can't do.
It is in stock now, I just bought one.
Can't wait for someone to ask me the time 🙂
You just gotta get used to it. Much cheaper than a Breitling Navitimer with the 24 hour dial. Good vid. Keep at it!
I actually own this exact watch, and I bought it for one reason. I wanted a non-digital watch that didn't cost an arm and a leg that I could set to UTC for use when doing something called Parks On The Air, which is an amateur radio activity. Everything has to be logged in UTC, so this watch makes that super easy because I don't have to do the conversion in my head.
Its useful where access to sunlight to ascertain exact time of day is hard to make out. Great for polar regions or some parts of northern Canada where you get wonky day time/night time split.
A 24h watch makes perfect sense when using it as a sun compass. I just ordered the 2431.01/030935-1, with a navigation degree bezel that should make navigation on land easy.

I have a vintage raketa with a 24hr dIal, from what I can find it was designed submarine crews where you have no indication of day/night. Your right, it's a bit tough to wear due to the 24 hour layout but it's a keeper for how Interesting it is.
I have this watch and I love it. I’m a hospital pharmacist and I’m constantly dating IV drips with BUDs (expiration times) on 24 time scale so this watch is the perfect work watch for me
My job requires me to work 12 hour rotating shifts and I need to document things at all hours at any time in military time. With my digital watches, it's an easy mode switch. With my analog ones, it's easy to add 12 and be done with it but I would really like the full lume 24 hour vostok amphibia 420B06SW1.
I've loved using 24 hour "military" time since high school. Spent four years in the military and still contract for the DOD. I love my 24hr Raketa 2623h. I may have to add this Vostok to my collection! I've also been drooling over a Glycine Airman.
Direction finding - you simply point hour hand sun wise and the 24h marker is north, you have to ignore DST though. There is a procedure with the 12h face but it's more complicated.
These watches actually make more sense than our traditional Dials. A slow hand for the hours an accurate hand for the minutes. Always funny when people try to explain what 20.15 means on a watch that shows 20.15......Still love my 12er watches ;)
one of my favourite watches. Mine is modded though with a GMT function bezel, which somehow makes more sense to me with a 24h dial... Ironically I'm using it to track down the time in Australia most of the time. Indeed the accuracy is not the best, but also not the worst. I'm really impressed by Vostok quality-wise and the aesthetics just makes me feel like I'm on the wrong end of the Cold War everytime I check the time. Maybe getting a Shturmanskie Traveller next...
I saw a video that mention ordering directly from Vostok, seemed even cheaper. I've been wanting a 24hr dial for awhile. The 650 has the same 200 m spec but if I recall is plated brass , that might be the standard ones though. I do like the mesh straps as well. Thanks for the video.
Both 650 case amphibias and komandirskies are all stainless steel case and crown, and most bezels are too.
I got one for under $50 USD delivered, before prices took off. Fun watch at that price. Scotchbrite will take care of that weird shiny center link.
If you already have other normal watches, then this is a great watch for you to tell stories about the company and the use of 24 hour watch. It's a good conversation starter.

I’ve had the 305607 which is the white dial one for about a year now. It took a long time for me to get use to it. Partly because I didn’t wear it every day. I grew to like it and see it now as another characteristic oddity of Vostoks. It’s worth getting one as it’s not going to break the bank. Agree with you on their mesh straps, I they are excellent.
I have the no-date version with brown/golden numbers on black dial and LOVE this watch for its classy yet unusual look and feel.
A fitting James Bond Nato on it 👍

I'm always reluctant to buy online, unless I've been able to try it on and know exactly what I'm getting. It's impossible to find some of these brands in brick and mortar stores in England.

7:36 As some of the others have commented, the 650541 watch makes perfect sense if you’re in the military, maritime, aviation, public safety, communications/amateur radio other groups that use 24 hour time. The only thing that doesn’t make any sense is the dive watch bezel. Agreed need to replace it with a 24 hour bezel so you can track two time zones. Bidirectional bezel is OK since it’s not a dive watch. Perfect if you understand and think in 24 time! Thanks Jody, I will be buying one and the 24 hr Pepsi bezel from Merinom.
This makes sense for military, cops and others who use a 24 hour time format.
Point the hour hand at the sun, the 12 index points North (in the Northern Hemisphere). Very handy - if that's your thing. But also quite intuitive when you've worn one a while.
