Toledo , A city with many historical monuments
Toledo is home to a cultural heritage and a rich collection of historical monuments that have allowed it to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pretty squares, eclectic buildings and cobbled streets await you as soon as you enter the city, via one of the gates of its medieval ramparts.
Toledo reserves many discoveries for visitors with its impressive buildings, among which the Gothic church of San Bartolomé and the great fortress of the Alcázar, as well as ancient medieval stone bridges like the Puente de Alcántara or monumental gates like the Puerta de Alfonso VI.

By visiting Toledo, you will experience Spain's rich history and heritage up close. It was once the country's capital, until 1560 when Philip II of Spain moved his court to Madrid, about an hour away.

Toledo steel has been renowned since the 16th century. Thanks to a high quality alloy of remarkable strength, this renowned steel remains flexible enough to forge swords. Thus, Toledo became a center for the manufacture of handmade swords which became the standard weapon of the Romans.
It seems that, before the existence of the craftsmen of modern cinema, the Hollywood filmmakers who made the classics of fantasy ordered their metal props and swords from the blacksmiths of Toledo. You can buy souvenir swords at many stores in town (though you may have trouble getting through customs with them).

Sad story, right in the middle of the main square in Toledo there’s a fast food restaurant that doesn’t go with the history of this beautiful city; the restaurant is a MacDonald. Please kick it out of there!!!

Here in Spain we say somebody has the "Toledo Syndrome" when they fall in love with the city and its history. The best way to visit it it's getting lost in the streets

Having just spent a week there after an eight year gap, I noticed the level of preservation and restoration has been outstanding. The uncovering of the original buildings has made this city a delight to the eye.. it has such a rich heritage having once been the capital of Spain. It is really not expensive, neither hotels, or food. I will go back soon.
It was never the capital of Spain. It was the capital of the ancient Visigoth Kingdom of Toledo (wich occupied almost the entire peninsula) and then the capital of the muslim Taifa Kingdom of Toledo. Never ever capital of Spain. Not even of Castile.

Que coraje que estuviese cerrado el museo de los concilios y la cultura visigoda porque es una de las joyas muy hermoso, tiene unos frescos impresionantes ..... con otro paseito hasta nos puedes mostrar la belleza de sus puentes de San Martín, de Alcantara y oye ya puestos algunas de sus puertas ..... las cuevas y subterraneos ya si eso en otra ocasión. Me encanta Toledo y desde Madrid son poco mas de 12€ y 30 minutos en Avant (Tren de alta velocidad) puedes ir y venir en el mismo día. GRACIAS

Toledo es una maravilla, tan solo necesita dos cosas, un río más limpio y menos calor en verano, pero por lo demás imagino el cielo como el Toledo antiguo, es una ciudad que me obsesiona estéticamente, llena de magia.

@@robert111k Cuando fui, hace mucho tiempo, era verano y bajaba algo oloroso, pero bueno teniendo a Madrid mas arriba, no puede ser todo perfecto. Ahora ignoro el estado del agua, vivo a 600 km. Saludos.
@@jorgitoviejoamigo2736, que los ríos bajen con poca agua, se embalsen y puedan oler no significa que no estén limpios. Y, por supuesto, desde los 80 toda el agua que sale de Madrid es convenientemente depurada.

Spain has the most incredibly beautiful cities of Europe but I don’t think that they are well recognized although people realize it when they visit these marvelous cities. These cities go back to the time when Spain was the most powerful and envied country of Europe. Granted, in great part, it was due to the richness found through the “New World “ and thus the sacrifice of the conquered people. Nevertheless, one can see that the creativity of the Spanish is superb and quite unique. Also, we cannot deny that it had wonderful places and architecture before Columbus and deserve credit for those periods in history in which it displayed its greatness as a people.
Don't be ridiculous. Almost everything you see in Toledo was build before 1492. On the other hand, what arrived to Spain from America was "el quinto real" (a fifth of the annual revenue from the American mines, just the same as in Europe), and it was directly to the Crown's treasure and immediately spent to mantain the empire. Nothing left for the cities, wich were independent from the Crown (the so called municipal Castilian democracy from the Middle Ages).
Castile was probably the richer and more scientifically advanced area of Europe during then XVth century (Salamanca University was probably the most important sciences hub on the whole world then), and that is why they could travel to an unknown part of the planet, because they had de money and the material means to do so. And nowadays, if you visit Latinamerica you'll see there are tons of infrastructures (universities, fortresses, roads, hospitals, churches... that come from the Virreinato time, unless the US, where you can't find anything left from the British domination peoriod).
