In my excitement for wanting to get this video out, I forgot to include the Music listings in the credits. Apologies for the mistake, I will list the tracks in this video below.
Music:
Intro: Illusion by Madija
Last Ninja Remix ~ The Wastelands
Cybernoid 2 by Jeroen Tel
A Load of Tap by Conrad
Turrican 3 Shooter
Outro: The Journey by Madija
Last Ninja Remix sounds very different on that SID, almost like Cheese by Wiklund ;)

your vlogs make me yearn to be back in the 80s, knee deep in the electronics of the best decade to grow up in, i feel lucky that i was a child and teen in the 70s & 80s. you've found a lifelong subscriber in me ;-)
Evie's stuff is great and does not get nearly enough coverage. Thank you!
You do what you're doing, true to you, you being you. Your fanbase will take care of you.
I don't really watch retro computing stuff any more, but given the bit early in the video about the algorithm, I just thought I'd let you know that the might algo recommended this video to me - despite my not watching any retro computing videos for years. Have a like and this comment as my small contribution to future algorithm boosts :)
Thank you very much, support like this really helps :-)
This makes me happy to see you review these because I’m on the verge of ordering one myself
I still love what you do. I just saw your channel is the one I’m subscribed to the longest: 6 (!) years! I looked back to your restoration of your reel to reel deck, and it’s fun to see HOW MUCH has changed in those 6 years… From a time where you were playing around with emulation and couldn’t really afford the real hardware to now, looking at the rack o stuff in your attic😂 I still like the wide range of projects you do in your very personal way.. Just with with Techmoan, I still always look forward to a new video. Thanks Maddi for the years of enjoying your content..
There was light filtrering on the original Green Beret loader my Martin Galway, but the C64 edition with brown F-keys had different filter values than the edition with gray F-keys by default. Ben Daglish also adressed this issue, I think it was on the Retrohour, but I'm not 100% sure. Nice video! Btw; The Last Ninja, Barbarian, Platoon and Prince of Persia were basically the same games on the C64 and the Amiga, only the Amiga had the Sample technology, They might've enhanced a few minor graphic details on the Amiga, but the major differences were achingly scarce, except for the long loading time from tape on the 64 coz I didn't have a floppy disk drive at the time. 😁
I wonder why the UA-cam algorithm took so long to bring your channel to my attention. I'm only a part way through one video and I'm hooked, subscribed!
Thank you! If you enjoyed this video, there's a huge back catalogue also 🙂
Good stuff!
youtube works in mysterious ways.
it's a cartridge which is absolute full on ingenious got to get one!
Nice overview, thank you. You will like the BackBit. I have the original version and use it all the time. Evie is always adding things to the firmware of her devices so new things are added to explore. One of the devices I really like of hers is the BackBit Chip Tester Pro. This thing makes repairs so much easier and diagnostics of all types of chips including Commodore, Amiga and Atari custom chips. She makes first class products. Keep up the good work and I am glad the algorithm showed this on my UA-cam page because I didn't know I wasn't a subscriber.
Great stuff as always, Maddi😊 I’ve backed you at top tier on Patreon because I want to support you the most I can. Thanks for your efforts keeping the magic alive !
I have no clue about this thing. I'm just here for the vibes
Thanks for making the end of our Sunday a little less upsetting
Hey! Berks on the 264 series, the BASIC course on Tape and the integrated memory monitor are really AMAZING! You should get an Plus/4 or even better an C16 with memory expansion! :D
Removing a chip without a puller? I'm calling the Retro Police! You're gonna be in so much trouble now!
Very cool that this new BackBit can work with the VIC-20 as well as Plus/4. In fact that just the adapter itself might come in handy to use as a sort of breakout board for the Plus/4 & C16 cartridge port (if all the signals are there).
I’ve been curious if this could work in a SID2SID. I think you’re supposed to be able to choose which chip it is in configuration , but I wonder if there’s any voltage differences in different modes.
love my BackSID since I took out my original SID in my C128 to use in my Catweasel in my AmigaONE X1000…awesome to know we can buy this great product because Lord knows trying to find a ‘good’ real SID chip nowadays ain’t easy!
Looking forward to a follow up video as this cart can do so much. It's great that you were sent so many adapter boards.
There's a lot more upcoming on the BackBit cart, it really can do so much.
@@MsMadLemon I think it was originally a C64 specific cart but this Pro model is definitely a leap forward.
Many new sid replacements fail with Fred Gray tunes. Try for example West Bank
Thanks for the suggestion... I'll have to look up Fred Gray's tunes and see if I can recognize any. I don't know him by name.
Thanks for sharing Maddi. Had no idea about this product. Don't worry about the VIC 20, btw. I own one, and it is underwhelming, lol
Those of us who follow you, love the fact that you are not conformist, nor do you bend to any algorithm. 😉 Be yourself! 👋
Actually i'm using an ARMSid in one of my C64's and i'm very pleased with it. It also allows lots of tweaking. Have the Backbit predecessor and what i've seen so far your version also doesn't seem to support (virtual) Disk swapping. Seems the main difference to the new Backbit version is that it has the adapters and support for more systems.
People have strong opinions of what a Sid should sound like. From what I hear the backsid sounds good to me.
Its strange that people expect SID to sound a very specific way. In reality, all the SID Revisions sound different from on another, no two SID chips sound exactly the same.
Very good
I got the BackSID as well when it first came out a few months ago... not sure if there is any firmware updates... but I find the ARMSID is the best out of the modern day SIDs! 👍
I'm still yet to try the armsid, I'm Intrigued.
nice content
Hey Madi ... Ive Vic 20 in need of restoring if you want it ? .. Regards Steve
The BackSID is completely out!
I expected it to not be like the original, its close to the 6581 r3 to our ears, it has a more of a clean sound compared to th 6581 r4.
SID chips aren't easy to replicate.
I can't begin to imagine how hard it is to replicate the SID sound as the genuine SID varies so much across all revisions anyway. The Backsid does a pretty good job to our ears and offers it's own take on the SID sound and the bonus is it gives us an excuse to go back a re-listen to our favourite tracks hearing the subtle differences. The closest I've heard to replicating the 8580 and 6581 so far is what Electronscape is doing with the SIDBox.
I have notifications turned on and They don't show up in my profile
UA-cam seems to be broken in many ways unfortunately.
!
All 4 one :)
The sid chip that's inside the C64 at 9:07 needs to be put in the bin. it sounds faulty and is not playing the tune proper. You say its from a car boot sale ?
The C64 is from a car boot sale, came boxed... The SID Is not faulty, it's what th 6581 r4 normally sounds like, it has a strong filter.
It not faulty, the R4 has very heavy filtering compared to the R2/R3. We use this track a lot to test the SID chips as it really makes heavy use of the filtering on the R4 chip, well that and it's a classic Galway tune :D It's a good track to pick out the difference in sound between the chips. Test it for yourself here and notice how different it sounds on each revision: www.6581-8580.com/socse/index.php?field=title&sorting=title&view=ASC&page=1&wildcard=off&add_fields=&query=green+beret&term_counts=0. Listen to the R4 then back at the video. It sounds genuine to me and we've tested it with lots of SIDs and compared it to other R4s, we certainly not putting it in the bin.
@@TrickSeventy5 Sounds like garbage to me . Have a nice day.
@@Rick_Todd Thanks, you too.
@@TrickSeventy5 lol
Almost disrespectful comparing the swimsid with the backsid. Apples and oranges….doing more research may help your channel.
This is comparing purely how they sound. I made that clear.
As always, an excellent video! I developed some online C64-Tools that I wanted to show you. I think they could be interesting for you. But there is no way to send you a message ;)
