Today I’m going to show you how to make a special Korean-style cornbread that I used to have when I was a kid in elementary school in Korea. The school provided this daily snack to the students just before class was dismissed. We looked forward to it every day, so I have fond childhood memories of cornbread, and of the anticipation of waiting for snack time at school!...
my batter looks thicker. Maybe my cornmeal is different. Will see if it comes out.
I use Indian Head Old Fashioned Stone Ground Yellow Corn Meal for this recipe. Check out the description box in any video and follow the link for the written recipe. Every video has a written recipe where I provide more detailed information such as ingredients, step by step directions, stories behind, photos, and tips.
Good luck!
@@Maangchi thanks it worked out. I just added more milk. But I will definitely check out the site for next time.
I used to get recipes off your website all the time for years because my mom is Korean but sadly passed away 15 years ago (last week as a matter of fact) without ever teaching me her recipes. I just discovered your YT channel today and I'm hooked! I may stay up all night catching up on all of them!!!! You remind me a lot of her, always happy and making jokes. And the accent of course. Thank you so much for sharing your recipes. 💕💕💕
I love her opening ‘Hi eberybody’! So adorable ❤️
I love cornbread but I don't have eaten it often cuz I don't find a really good one. Cornbread it's a emotional memory for me. My granny used to make cornbread and baked them in a clay oven so they remained fresh for a long long time. We used eat it with whipped molasses cane on it. Here where I live cornbreads are much appreciated but now they are no longer handicrafted and contains a lot of wheat flour so the corn flavor is not that evident. I loved your recipe, it is simple, visually wonderful because of its color, appetizing for its texture and very soon I will know exactly how it tastes. I intend to make this bread tomorrow because fortunately I have a cornflour package in my pantry. Thank you for this wonderful recipe that feeds not only our body but brings back so many emotions and precious memories.
Shy Moon Good luck with making good cornbread tomorrow. Thank you for sharing your grandmother store. Clay oven sounds great!
Garry Perkins Sorry, I don't have it. I was just a little child and back then I was not interested in anything but eat that bread. I rebember the bread was black outside as if it as totally burned but under the crust there was a tasty and wet cornbread. I don't know why but mommy never bake that kind of cornbread.
Shy Moon where are you from?

i love the fact that BREAD in Korea is ppang ... it makes me realize that the whole earth and all its peoples and countries and languages are TOTALLY the SAME. Bread -- pan (Spanish), pain (French), pane (italian), pa (Catalan), pâine (Romanian) ... and it goes on and on in every language anyone can figure words out, based upon sentence context. I love it!
And it's called Pav in India.
According to the dictionary, "ppang" was a loan word from the Portuguese pão!
Not all just the most with latin origin - In Greek we say ψωμί read as : psaumi /psomi, meaning bread . This type of cornbread we name it bobota (though not sure if it's a Greek origin word ) but it was the main bread/cake/dessert during world wars, referred to as the"bread of the poor" !! Variations are with cheese/salty or with sweet with honey and raisins .
The Irish word for bread is arán, the English word is bread, and the Polish word is chleb
All ROMANCE languages have that pan- thing going for them
also in japanese it’s パン pan
Good morning everybody!
Many people said that they already miss my old measuring spoons! so funny!! : ) But I feel warm because I think you guys and me are connected to each other even via my measuring spoons!
I'm usually not a keeper but this time I should change my mind to keep them for a while for you guys. Until when? Until I change my mind again. The bottoms of each spoon is not smooth and they look a little sticky because I wash them with my dishwasher.
Thank you for all of your recipes. I was curious as to whether you have a recipe using fresh smelt for soups or maybe a meat dish for rice with veggies. Thank you again for your recipes and your time. ~ Aubrey.
Maangchi can you show us how to make sinseollo please.
Cindy Strohecker
+Maangchi can i use corn starch? because i can't find corn meal
Your breakfast is very nice!!!!😀
If I am feeling down all I have to do is watch one of your videos and it is like the sun has come and the birds are singing!!! Thank you so much for sharing your light!!!!!
Thank you for your nice comment!
Daniel Voloto right?! She is such a sweetheart.
She sure is! I just love Mama Maangchi!❤️❤️❤️
Hi missMaangchi you are the best thank you 🙏 🌹❤️
This is awesome! We make a version of cornbread here in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Everyone down here eats this all the time and it's really cool to see that all the way across the world, people are eating something incredibly similar! We never make it without our 100 year old cast iron skillet though 😺 Love you Maangchi!
Thank you! Check out the story about cornbread in Korea here. www.maangchi.com/recipe/oksusu-ppang
Absolutely 💖💖💖 this is the same recipe I grew up on, but it was baked in a cast iron skillet 🍳💖💖💖
Hey all, if you're lactose intolerant, replace the milk with coconut milk and replace the butter with oil (I used coconut oil instead of vegetable oil for the recipe and to oil the pan). Came out perfect! I used the brown coconut kind of oil so that the coconut flavor doesn't come out in the cornbread. If you only have young coconut oil and/or milk, you'll taste the coconut. It's still amazingly tasty though. Thank you Maangchi! This was delicious!
Jamie Bartnik Thank you for the good tips for my viewers!
Lactaid or any lactose free milk
ThAnks sooo much marvellous Maangch!! My son has just been diagnosed with gluten allergy & most of the gluten free breads are dry ...terrible & expensive!!!
He will LUV this bread!!! You've saved us maangch!! Luv your channel!! 💜xxx
I hope your son likes the bread! Please follow the directions in the recipe. You should use stone ground yellow corn meal that I posted the photo in the recipe. Good luck! www.maangchi.com/recipe/oksusu-ppang
if someone gave me a heart shaped cornbread for valentines day, i'd love them forever!!
I just hope “your stalker” is not watching this then.
I made it and it was delicious. Crunchy on the outside, soft inside. I used coconut milk instead of cow milk. Thank you so much Maangchi!
Wonderful!
I trust this lady recipes all the time, guys remember some cornmeal are corser than some.so it will get thicker than some just watch your consistency.
This recipe is especially heavenly for this poor gluten allergic individual. Maangchi you saved me and plenty of gluten sensitive people.
Came across this recipe about three hours ago and made one ...my family is eating loving it as we speak. Thanks a million
Mlm
For years I have been trying to get this consistency when I make a cornbread but never did. I tried this recipe and it worked. However, I did not have the brand of cornmeal you suggested but used a very fine grain cornmeal. I also had to put in extra milk to get it to the consistency you had. It worked though. I also added a little vanilla and nutmeg to kick it up a notch. Thanks Maangi.
A comfort food for me growing up was cornbread, pinto beans, and milk. This recipe is absolutely delicious and makes me have a moment of nostalgia.
paul Riley mn
Cornbread, pinto beans and milk sound like a heavenly combo :D
How much cornmeal
So maybe a couple of weeks ago I looked up cornbread recipes and today this was in my recommended list. I smiled all the way through, what a happy little home chef you are! I'm definitely going to try it and I'll be back for more.
Maangchi!
You have the kind of energy that lights up my day ❤️
Thanks & God bless you for this easy, delicious corn bread recipe. I've made twice. The best part is, no white flour and less ingredients. Thanks again.
Wonderful!
You are the first one who say to soak it, I totally agreee, I noticed when I let it soak it gets so fluffy , I’m happy I came across your video!
Happy New Year!
I just made this corn bread and I added an extra egg, I am so in love with this recipe.
Wonderful!
Who knew ( probably many) knew Koreans made cornbread in Korea!!! I always thought it was an American adaptation by some British immigrant in the beginning. Lol I d love to hear more about the true history of language and food, like where and when India started cooking with curry, I always thought that was an India thing that others copied. ❤️ I love that she adds all the translations. I d love to make her the all BUTTER recipe. She seems like such a sweet person. I can't wait to try this gluten free recipe. Very clean cuts to serve to company. She could add no-flour or gluten free to her title and increase her viewers.
I make my cornbread in my granny’s cast iron skillet she left to me.
I also use lard for oil. Great recipe!
With your recipes I would never die of hunger 😄😄
Wow!!! you are great, love your style. Making this for christmas, thank you...💕
Letting your corn meal mix, pancake mix even cake mix sit lets the air bubbles out. Making it smoother and yes fluffier. It's good you shared that! :D
When I was a kid, my mom used to tell me that she had this corn bread at her elementary school. I think my mom and Maangchi are about the same age! :) I will make this bread for my mom! And thanks for the tip 직구!
Ok....this cornbread has the look and texture I've been searching for. Thank you Maangchi....will certainly give this a try 😊👍🏻🇹🇹
I start like her cooking program so much...look clear..simple&easy to follow her instruction...💖💖💖💖💖
Whoa, it's really a small world! We here in the Southern states eat cornbread too! Its part of foods we call "Soul Food". The cornbread that I'm used to is not sweet at all and is traditionally made in a cast iron skillet. For some reason, store brands of cornbread mix( read Jiffy) are really sweet. Its served with literally anything like chicken, meatloaf, beef stew, chili, etc.Anyway, I this recipe looks good and I will try it out. Thanks for uploading! :)))
shadrakbindi Thank you for sharing the info!
shadrakbindi Southerners represent!! I grew up with cornbread as well :)
i totally relate! in opinion, it tastes great sweet with collard greens or black eyed peas, mac and cheese, and fried chicken with a glass of sweet tea.
shadrakbindi
i too make it without sugar and in a cast iron skillet!! yummmmmmmm!
I spend my time most in the kitchen preparing food for my kiddos and your cooking show makes me motivate to keep it cooking and more cooking every single day.
Never thought about letting batter soak. Will try today.Youvare very gracious, thank you.
Good luck!

I love you Maangchi and your recipes!
I love this video! I baked a pan of corn bread last night, using this recipe with one extra table spoon of sugar (Coz I like it sweet) and it turned out to be so good! Even though it was my very first time baking corn bread, was super easy, quick and yummy. I will definitely bake it more often. Thank you!

+Maangchi I am of Creole Decent ( Native American, French Etc.) and this is at least 7th recipe very similar or identical to some of our southern recipes. It is how I found your channel. I was looking for a recipe my mom used to make and I forgot a few ingredients. So I look them up on you tube and I see your recipes. I realize they were similar but with more healthy ingredients in some. Instead of using milk we use buttermilk and instead of baking powder we use all purpose flour. I try it your way and I like the yours better because it is more healthy. Thank you for bringing such beautiful memories of home back to me. Now I can share with my children, keeping family recipes going. I am now older and have a few health issues such as diabetes. As I grow older and being born in Michigan not Louisiana as my sisters, I forget some traditional recipes. My Husband is Italian and learning new recipes, I forgot how to cook some childhood recipes. Your funny and me and my family watch you often. I had forgotten at times how to enjoy cooking and how to make it a family fun event. Again Thank you for the reminder. We love you and can not wait to watch your new videos.
+Princess Moon Thank you very much for your warm message here. I'm glad you like this recipe! Happy cooking!
+Maangchi All over the southern US cornbread and other foods from cornmeal are traditional. One thing you can do to get a nice crust on the outside of your cornbread is to heat the pan with the butter in the oven before you pour in the mix. Don't let the butter burn just get it melted and hot. It will make a crunchy yummy crust on the outside of the soft bread. You could also take your mixture and fry it like a pancake. My mother loves these, we call them hoe cakes.
OMG! My grandson #1 is going to flip! He is a cornbread nut! And he loves my scalloped corn too. Gotta save this and give it a go for him. Thankyou! PS that breakfast looks so good. Wish I COULD join you lol!😍💇🇰🇷🇺🇸🌽🍓☕🍵

I'm a Westerner, and our tradition is to make a sweeter style of cornbread that my Tennessee grandma would probably call "corn cake." I like making cornbread to eat with a big pot of ham and beans.
I find myself making cornbread a lot in the cold months. Our family enjoys it with chili. :)
My family too! It's the perfect time for chili and cornbread!😊
It's really good if you make chili and pour it in a casserole dish, and then put cornbread batter on top and bake it.
Sooo good.
Garry Perkins It's really rather simple.
Use whatever chili you and your family like.
Make the cornbread batter like Maangchi did (Maybe without the sugar if you don't want it sweet)
Put the chili in a casserole dish sprinkle some cheese on top (we use velveta sometimes because it's creamier) then pour the cornbread batter on top, bake until the cornbread is done.
Serve with sour cream.

Ah, that's so awesome! I'm from the southern US, and my father always made this food when I was young. I've always associated cornbread as a southern US food. I didn't even know it was eaten in Korea! I've never let the batter soak though - that's a great idea. I'll have to try it next time!
